Condition Cards

Accessories

So I was thinking about this as I've been looking over all of my various game aides. I've been thinking of printing out conditions on paper "laminating" them, and then handing out a condition card to players when a certain persistent condition affects one of the PCs. That way the rules are right there on the card to remind the player what the condition does to the character.

While I'm planning on doing this myself, I thought that this would be a great idea for a GameMastery product, though I realize that this might not be something Paizo wants to tackle until they know how much longer they are supporting 3.5 rules.

I've seen people use table-tents and, at GEN-CON several years ago, buttons.

Edit: Argh, the file doesn't seem to be available anymore. I have a copy, but I won't be able to upload it until sometime next week.

Yeah, this is something we seriously discussed and even began planning for... right before we heard 4e was coming out... *le sigh*

That's it . . . I have to build that time machine now, just so I can stop 4th edition, and get these things made . . . ::grumble::

I just wish they would get it in gear and get the OGL material out so everyone could take a look.

Thanks for tracking these down. I'll probably print these out on card stock, although I would have gladly forked over my money for official GameMastery versions . . . ah well.

Thanks for tracking this down for us. They look awesome but I would love whatever Paizo has in mind - after the Edition Wars are over.

And you could create condition cards for Pathfinder specific conditions - like being bitten by a Sinspawn.

I second that. Much appreciation for bringing this to light!

These are great!!

But table tents would work better. Can anyone change them into table tents, readable from both sides, and able to fold flat? I'll dedicate an adventure session to anyone if they do.

Even so, I suspect I'll be passing a few of these out to players who can create these effects, and using them when i know an NPC is going to create them.

If I had table tents, i could also use my colored paperclips to keep track of what NPOc was under what condition. I already use them for lots of other stuff. (Colored paper clips let me move people around on maps, or in sections of an adventure, or bookmark different pages of spellbooks for different NPCs all in the same book -- they're great!)

Jeremy Walker has a table tent in our campaign. It says "Delaying until further notice." Not precisely a condition... but very handy.

That's cool too!

Andf it could be used for so many things.

"sword in hand"
"detecting for evil"
"ready to attack the first offensive creature in reach"

These are cool. Thanks!

I'm not sure I know what a table tent is.

I'm guessing it is like when you are young, and your body starts to go through changes, and you get a bulge in your pants during math class, so you try and hide it under your desk and desperately hope you don't get called to the board to solve a problem.

"I'm not offensive, I just smell that way. You try try keeping all this fur from stinking when you're stuck in a stuffy old dungeon!"

I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist. I read your post and this just popped into my head.

I was just thinking that with the availability of game pieces (to use holding a 2d cardboard token) on the internet and the perforated sheets for business cards run through the home printer, that pitching a...err...table tents wouldn't even really be necessary.

Dark Archive

You might be able to just make up a word document that you could print out on card stock or laminate to make as table tent conditions. I'm going to try to make some and will post a link if I can get them working.

Dark Archive

All righty here goes: Condition Table Tent Template Word Document

They are pretty simple and require some prep for what conditions you would want but they may be helpful to some body I hope.

And thanks to the above poster who used driveway. It sure beats the heck out of using freebie web pages with bandwidth limits to share some things I created.

Thanks,
JM

You know . . . now that we know what direction Paizo is going, this seems like it could be a really good idea again . . . although I imagine that we probably have to see if there are any changes to conditions overall.

I'd love to see these things though.

And to expand on the idea, once the final list of spells and how they work are set, how about "buff" cards for players to set on their sheets to remind them of various spells, with the breakdown of what they do?

I went looking for condition cards, and my google-fu lead me to this old post. Couldn't find what I was looking for available for .pdf, so I made a set of cards (one for each of the conditions in the SRD) in MS Publisher as business cards.

They are pretty simple, a black box with the condition name in large white text, and a bordered text box beneath it with a one-sentence description of the condition in italics, and a bulleted list of modifiers beneath that.

For example:

Prone
You are on the ground.

  • You take a –4 penalty on melee attack rolls and cannot use a ranged weapon other than a crossbow (at no penalty).
  • You gain a +4 bonus to AC against ranged attacks.
  • You suffer a –4 penalty to AC against melee attacks.
  • Standing is a move-equivalent action that provokes an attack of opportunity.

I'm going to try to convert them to pdf format with 10 conditions on each page (standard business card printing is 2x5 per page). Would anyone be interested in the .pdf when it's finished? They're 3.5 SRD now, but I intend to create a set for PRPG Beta one the rules are released.

A box of 400 good-quality non-perforated business cards (40 sheets) is about $30, so to print a set isn't too big of an investment. Considering how often my group forgets about little things like sickened effects, I think they'll be a big hit at the next game session.

snappa, I'd love to see a copy of those. :)

Grand Lodge

I wanted to resurrect this thread.

So, Paizo had been considering doing this before 4E and then apparently dropped the idea. Why?

There really is a market for professionally done cards out there. I mean look at the Item Cards. For an item a GM could just write the information on an index card and have the same usefulness. And yet the quality of the Item Cards makes GMs use them and players LOVE them.

For a while, in our last 3.5 game, we printed spells on index cards, as well as feats, and conditions. Maneuvers came next.

In a way it combined the traditional RPG experience with the thrill of slapping down cards in a trading card game. It helped track spell use, and kept all of the rules clear and right out front. No one had to waste time looking up rules, or forgetting spell effects and stuff like that.

AN example of play would go something like this:

Cleric would cast Bull Strength on the fighter and hand the card to the fighter. The fighter who had three attacks would then toss down Bull Strength, Trip, Improved Trip. Resolve quickly as the rules were right there and pick up the cards. Then toss down Prone on the NPC, toss down Power Attack, Two-Weapon Fighting and that Bull Strength card and then resolve his remaining attacks. It was a LOT of fun.

Then the spell caster had an easier time of it. He had his spells right there in his hands. He didn't need to look up the spells in the book, flipping and flipping and flipping. When it came time to resolve the effect he didn't have to pass the book down so the GM could see the area and the range and the duration and the saving throw and the crazy special effects resolution. Instead he looked at his "hand" found the spell he wanted and cast it by tossing it on the table. The GM and every one could see the rules and effects quickly and resolve the spell easily. Combat went so fast.

We stopped using the cards because as we leveled the available spells became too many to keep printing and printing and printing and the number of fighter feats became uncountable. In essence printing became too much.

If we could have just picked up a deck of cards for Conditions, another for Feats, and a couple more for Arcane and Divine spells, we would have. Yes I know there are PDFs out there that I can use to print my own. But the point is I DON'T want to sit and print a crap load of cards and then separate the cards and everything else that goes with it. Cost wise it isn't worth my time to do that.

Now that Beta has come out and Conditions are even more important, with grapple effects now being conditions, it would seem that cards are even more vital to the game.

So, here is the appeal for quality cards so I don't have to waste my time and print out a bunch of crappy ones using up my ink, paper and time.

Please, Paizo-Wan-Kenobi, you're my only hope.

I agree Krome, I love the idea of Item/Feat/Spell/Condition cards, but hate actually printing it out on crappy index cards or 110lb paper (cardstock).. it just gets expensive and it doesn't look good.. I'd rather buy card packs from paizo, if they made such a thing..

Yup, pre-printed for PFRPG, similar to Item Cards would be great.

There are some great PDFs out there of these I cant remeber the company but i have laminated them and they are great

Grand Lodge

True. I have some PDFs of spell cards and stuff like that.

Problem is you have to print them.

Then buy more ink and paper.

Then print the other side.

Buy more ink.

Cut them out.

Laminate them.

Keep from going screeming mad!

PDFs don't do me any good what-so-ever.

I don't have the time and money to sink into printing and processing all the cards.

I would MUCH rather have some preprinted, high quality (instead of crap) cards that I can reuse often without them folding and tearing apart and then having to print them all over again.
