Players Combat Pad

In one of the games I was running one of my players brought a cut up dry erase board to track his character stats during encounters. It go me thinking and I think every player alive would buy a Players Combat Pad.

This pad would have a section to track Hp's (lethal and subdue), An empty ability section to track ability damage and spell buffs, Number of arrows or bolts used, changes to saving throws through spells and damage, and conditional modifiers to skills and speed for certain injuries (like a smashed hand, stepping on a caltrip).

I always hated making marks on my 'official' character sheet and this would be really nice to have.

I love the idea, and have actually been using something like that myself for a while. Unfortunately, with the uncertainty surrounding the new edition, now is probably not the best time to introduce such a product.

Good point but for who ever would run with this I hope you like it enough to consider it.

I was also thinking under each ability should be a list of skills and other stats that are effected when the ability changes for good or bad. Nothing extensive just a list for quick reference so the player would know to add or subtract the new bonus or penalty when they use the skill.

ex.

Dex __
(AC, Reflex, Balance, Escape Artist, Hide....., Feats)

The last Feats is just to remind the player that some feat they might not be able to use with a large penalty.

Just some ideas, but I would buy one for all my players. Better than looking at a scribbled up character sheet.

I like the idea. I would use it as a player. I would buy it for my players as a Christmas Present...

Yes, this has merit.

All of your players? :)

This is a great idea. I would buy one. Heck, I would buy 5.

Cheers

When 4e comes around I'm convinced this will be REQUIRED. Look at the paladin's smite. The low level version gives allies an AC bonus for a round. If all the classes have something like this (which it seems they will) you'll need someway to keep track of it.

Liberty's Edge

When I'm a player in a campaign, I put my character sheets in plastic sleeves. I then use a fine tipped dry-erase marker to adjust my character during play.

I think I might combine your method with the ideas of the combat pad. Creat a template and put it in a plastic sheet and use that during the next gaming session. Then correct and try again...

I would be interested on how it works, let me know.

I will work something up in the next couple of days and let you know what it looks like. I will be playing on the 29th so I will get to try it out.

Vic - I don't support you would be willing to share some of what you have on what you use.

I use the back of a Combat Pad (which is white, but is still wipe-off and magnetic). I've divided it into sections with a wet-erase pen; my sections include attack bonus, damage, armor class, hit points, and temporary effects (for tracking rounds of rage, haste, etc.). The section headers and my default stats are written in wet-erase.

I've labeled a bunch of Combat Pad magnets with common buffs (they say things like "Prayer: +1" and "vs. Evil: +2" and such), and placed them in the appropriate categories. As each takes effect, I click it into line with my defaults, and then use a dry-erase pen to tally the current value at the bottom.

I also use the dry-erase for marking rage rounds, current hit-point totals—anything that changes often. I can then easily erase these things without disturbing the stuff that's in wet-erase.

WOW - nice. I am obviously low tech here.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like something based on that for players (after all the edition stuff is worked out) will be great.

I worked up something on an excel spreadsheet and put it in a plastic sheet protector. With the ideas you all gave here. It worked great. I will continue to work it but I cannot think of anything else to add and I was hoping to keep it to one sheet.

I am still interested in what Paizo comes up with in the future.

Shem,

I would like to know how the spreadsheet worked for you. Also, if you don't mind, would you be willing to share it?

My email is shinwonmoon@hotmail.com.

I would love to see your spreadsheet as well.
Thanks!

So would I if they weren't too expensive. I'd buy at least one or two even if htey were a bit pricey.

I also sent them to all my players so they could use them. There was certainly a variance in how they used them. I also did not (other than email) tell them my idea of how to use it.

Liberty's Edge

Shem,

I'd like to see your sheet also !

e-mail me at : silenttimo@yahoo.fr

thanks.

Any feed back on the pad? Just curious about any comments or improvements.

I have also thought on doing something like this, just a small sheet and then laminating it. Are you thinking of doing something more graphical than just an excel sheet (or can you insert graphical elements in excel sheet, not so familiar with that)?

Liberty's Edge

Thanks !

I've got to try it !

BTW, what does "Pos" mean ?

That would be an increase in the numbers (positive) as opposed to a decrease in the numbers (Negative)

I could insert graphics but I want to keep it on one sheet and I am already pushing the envelope here. If it gets into more than the one I think it defeats the purpose for me.

I put my characters in a fairly hard folder with acro fasteners in document protectors - unless I have something strange to add and I just stick it in the back.

So I have my character sheet (2 pages back to back) in the front. Then this combat pad - to make the changes ongoing in the game. Someone casts a bless and then I mark what goes up. Lose a level than I mark what goes down, etc.

I then make sheets up for class abilities - for my Rogue that takes two pages (again back to back) in a document protector.

Then my feats the same way.

If I have a spellcaster than I put their spells in next so I do not have to dig if I have a question on a spell.

Then any background information I typed up.

Then if I am inspired I may type a journal and that is included without document protectors here.

I have even printed up the skills out of the SRD and thrown that document in the back.

As a DM I hate it when my players do not know how their own character works. I like to have all my information right there in the one folder when I play so I am not digging in the middle of a combat round or role playing situation.

"I tell him.... (bluff) um let me look that up to make sure... Or I throw this spell. Doesn't the saving throw negate that spell? I don't know let me check.

Drives me nuts.

Anal - I would say so... But when I play my part of the game flows without me or the DM having to look things up. He can if he doesn't believe me or I will if he really wants me to check something but I have it all right in the folder and things just move along.

Now does the group I DM do that? Not a chance...

Of course. Haven't seen your spreadsheet, so don't know how much stuff you managed to put in it. I've been thinking something like 8 x 6 inches or so for the size. I'm going to try to put the same background art as in my character sheets, but it just might be impossible. =)

I didn't read all the posts, but here's a good trick.

Laminate a piece of paper that has the design you're looking for (or, just laminate a sheet). Basically, it's the same as the flip mats. The laminate will allow you to use Dry erase, wet erase, and permanant markers.

To erase Permanant, write over it with dry erase and then erase.

Enjoy

Edit, looks like this was already said. Oh well, the permanant marker reference still has merit.
