I recall reading about prestige class that had a mock ‘funeral’ as a pre requisite to join, because after that you were effectively dead to your loved ones. One of the abilities granted was a save bonus vs fear (since you were inured to it by having ‘died’). I’ve combed my books and electronic files but can’t locate the class, its beginning to fester on me. Based on the admittedly skimpy info can anyone provide the class? Of course this could all be a false memory and I'll wake up in a shower...

That sounds like one of the Thrall to Demon PrCs from Iggwilv's Demonomicon. I'll check.
On the other hand, a false funeral is supposedly one of the requirements to become one of the yama-metsuke or mountain inspectors of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Having said their final goodbyes, the face without fear the enemies of the Shogun. I read this from Lone Wolf & Cub by the way.

2e Taladas gnomes had an elite order who had faux funerals because they were 'dead'.
They were like Gnomish Marines or Death Commandos
Matt-you rock! Your mention of Taladas gnomes spurred me to check the hand scrawled index of the random Dragons I've accumulated. In Dragon 315 p 38-39 the Companions of the Deda were updated to 3.5. I may not ever use them, but it was really beginning to vex me that I couldn't locate it.
Thanks again.

If you have not looked in "The Book of Vile Darkness" or "Libris Mortis", you might want to...I dont know for sure.

Freehold DM wrote:Taladas was one of the best trilogies I've read in a while. I didn't care for the ending, but it was gritty sword and sorcery of a caliber I didn't expect from the normally romantic Dragonlance setting. Are you refering to the minotaur wars trilogy? That was a wicked cool series.
No, not the minotaur wars trilogy, the one after it. I have to look up that trilogy because it sounds DAMN cool. This new trilogy is from the human perspective. It's damn interesting to see how non-minotaur live in that world. Humans can certainly join the army, but rarely become officers, partially due to bias(which is seriously dampened due to the lawful tendencies of minotaurs) but also due to the fact that a human has to be DAMN tough to survive their tactics.
