Awesome. Very excited.
Now, just to make sure . . you are still not taking any moster requests of Pathfinder are you yet? (This may be answered in the PDF, but I am at work and have not downloaded it yet.)
Anyways, I can't wait to send something in / see what my fellow Paizo fans have to offer.
Sweet. With the advent of all the PbP games I'm in, I haven't been checking the rest of the site that often.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention, otherwise I might have missed it for a few days, or even <gasp> not seen it at all.
And I was going to go to bed after checking the boards. I guess its going to be a late night ;-)

i have a question concerning the Open Call--it states that there is virtually no establishing info on Azurestone or Fog Peak Mountains...
Does this mean the submissions are not supposed to offer any details on these locations, or utilize background info for them in the adventure? Are we free to come up with background stories for both locations and use them as background for the plot?

You are free to devlop these locations as you see fit to work within the context of your adventure. We might have some more guidelines to add as we go along, but for right now, the canvas is relatively blank.

The guidelines say the author will be paid at your "standard rates." And what might those rates be? :)
You get the contributor tag next to your name, a handwritten note from Erik Noah saying that you are almost as cool as Greyhawk, and, if you are in the Seattle area, an invitation to watch Star Wars Episode I in Lisa & Vic's home theatre.
Contributors to Pathfinder get the above, but get to watch the Empire Strikes Back instead.

I just want to ask a question. Having now read the document, I want to know something before I bother to submit.
If I am 15 (16 by the time this would be all said and done, I imagine) do you still want a submission? When Dungeon was still around, I sometimes wondered if I should bother sending submissions because everyone else who got things published was at least 18 as far as I knew.
The old Dungeon guidelines mentioned something about rights being signed to Paizo under a parent or guardian if the writer was not "of the legal age" (18, I assume), but I don't know how age affects things.

Again, not that I am stalking James Jacobs, but IIRC, he was actually published in the hallowed pages of Dungeon back in the late 80s/early 90s while still in high school.
I'd guess that he's probably sympathetic to your plight.
I actually am stalking James Jacobs.

Seriously? It's based on word count??? I guess I can't think of any better way to do it, but I find that slightly amusing.
It practically invites you to
to start each line with a repeat of
of the last word of the previous line and
and hope that no one catches it. Free money!

Jason, is Azurestone/Fogpeak Mountains already "on the map" for you guys, at least relative to what they are adjacent to?
ie. Would it matter if I said in the query that they were inland or coastal locations, etc? Or on the borders of Cheliax or the Cinderlands, etc?
(The Inland/Coastal thing actually might play directly into my proposal idea)

Remember there's a page limit and word limit though, so you'd be better off using that word count for content rather than filler, so they like it better and hire you again =p
Oh; and would it be ok to include multiple monster ideas? I have a couple and can't really decide on just one to send out.

Dude. Were you totally unaware of the global freelancer conspiracy to keep 3e stat-blocks so large and unwieldy? It's like gold man. Pages upon pages of free money.
A freelancer thought up the delve format as well but the Wizards, in a bout of counter espionage, snagged it and proclaimed it theirs before anyone could gain insane amounts of practically stolen cash.

Are there any special submission guidelines to use for the open call? I've been unable to locate anything specific to an open call for a GameMastery module on the site, and would be appreciative for a link.
Here's hoping to see a new face in the crowd when this module gets greenlighted!
Check the GameMastery Blog for Sept 20th. (I'd link to the actual post, but I don't know how to do that to a specific post in the blog)
And its open to anyone... except those already writing for GameMastery and Pathfinder. So no Logue, Greer, Pett, etc ... although it might very well go to someone like Rambling Scribe who has already been published in Dungeon.
*My mentioning Nick as the first writer that came to mind should in no way be construed as a vote for him. But of course, he'll count it if he sees the post, lol

We used to allow writers under 18 for the magazines (although I'm not sure we actually printed any during my time on Dragon), so I imagine we can do it for modules. You'll need to get a parent or guardian to sign the legal stuff for you, though.

Seriously. That's the way it's been done for at least a hundred years.

No. Write the adventure and then we'll put them on the map. :)

Nope. Nope. And yes. Don't put it in Varisia.

That's fine. :)

Yup, what Coridan said. You could waste your word limit on "really really" and "super duper" or you could use it to describe something cool. :)
Oh; and would it be ok to include multiple monster ideas? I have a couple and can't really decide on just one to send out.
Er... Jason will get back to you on Monday. Or at least he'd better!

Nope. Just send us the info we ask for. :)

Heh. The ironic part of that is how stat blocks take up a LOT of room but have less words than running text in the same amount of space.
I learned that the hard way when I was all happy about stat blocks I wrote for a project and saw I was less than half as far (word-count-wise) as I thought I was. :\

Okay. I assumed as much that my parents would have to sign off legal stuff, but I doubt they'd not be inclined to do so if it meant I could get something published.
At any rate, I just always want to take up the chance to submit and idea and possibly get an adventure published.

A vote for me! Did you see that Nick?
I imagine that I will not be the only person previously published in dungeon entering this competition, but I hope no one lets that dissuade them from throwing their hat into the ring. We do not have any extra leg-up in this project (at least as far as I know, but frankly, I don't know any more than you!) Do take it as a reason to put your best effort into creating a compelling adventure that will knock the socks off the judges!
There are a lot of talented, hard-working DMs out there who haven't been published yet. This open call could rocket you to fame and fortune! (Okay fame among Paizo fans and 5 cents a word, but you know what I mean)
I will be entering, and putting in my best effort. Whoever beats me, and everone else, your adventure better be good, because I'm going to buy it!

*If we don't get invited to the next step after our initial query is reviewed, will we be getting a rejection email, or will it be like WotC's new guidelines where you only hear if you got accepted.
I don't know. Jeremy will need to field that question, since he's the front-line guy on this.
At any rate, I just always want to take up the chance to submit and idea and possibly get an adventure published.
Understandable. Good luck. :)
We don't need to attach a Standard Disclosure Form with this query, like we used to do with Dungeon & Dragon? (I just noticed it wasn't mentioned on the Open Call PDF)
No. I think those were more of a magazine thing. Basically: don't plagiarize, don't submit something you've already published, and be ready to revise. That's all the SDF essentially said.
...your adventure better be good, because I'm going to buy it!
Your adventure better be good, because I'm going to have to edit it!

Directed at any Paizo staff:
How often are you planning on having Open Calls like this?*
*I totally understand if it hasn't been decided yet, or depends on the results of this Open Call. But I was wondering if Paizo did have plans to do it quarterly, annually, etc
I'd be absolutely stunned if they had another one before 4e came out, because they're gonna want to decide whether or not to switch.

Good point.
I'll just have to win this one then ;-)

I'm working on a proposal for this, but I keep going in circles in my head. I admit, the idea of having to output around 22000 words before the end of the year is more than a little intimidating, but at the same time, this is something I've often dreamed of doing.
Ah, well. Time to bite the bullet and get it done.

Whee! I've been working mine up. I'm pretty excited.
I'm also a little freaked out. The adventure is called Flight of the Red Raven and it starts in "Azurestone." I learned to swordfight with a club called the Red Ravens around the time I wrote my first Dungeon adventure, set in "Blue Rock."
That means you win, right?
*crumples up his email and tosses it into the trash.*

*Oops. Sorry if my post above sounded arrogant. That was meant to be in a joking tone when I fired off that response while at work, but re-reading the thread now, it doesn't quite sound the way I wanted it to.
Nah, I totally took it as humble and playfully competitive, but you have to beat my ass to win it. ;)

Well, looks like it's going to be stiff competition for this one. I would expect nothing less.
Can't wait to see what develops and how the final adventure turns out.
I will buy W3 when it comes out, whoever wins and whatever the adventure content, as a sign of support for the Paizo community.
Good luck to everyone!
| Talion09 |
What sort of format is everyone using for the query?
A list of the 5 questions, with a paragraph or two for each answer, almost like a Q&A format?
Or a more organic written essay that covers the 5 questions, but doesn't break distinctly break them into sections?
Or something inbetween?
My Dungeon queries used to follow the more organic style, since it flowed better... but then again, I never got published in Dungeon, lol
