At leve five, your what, in end of Bullywug Gambit, or starting Sea Wyvern's Wake? I can see how in There is no Honor, constricted areas make skirmish hard. Same thing to a degree in BG, although there is a lot of raw ground there. SWW is by default restricted in movement, since its mostly on a ship. After that, you might find yourself gaining a little ground. It is the isle of dread, after all. Lots of room.
I'd say check out Complete Scoundrel, there are some multiclasssing feats in there that are nice for scouts. Ask your DM if he allows skirmish to count as sneak attack for feat prereqs and such (most people do, but it isn't actually in the rules, to the best of my knowledge) so you could take hamstring, headshot, etc.
Make sure you check the erratta; as a scout, you have trapfinding, and disable device IS a class skill for you. That should make you useful, especially as the campaign progresses.

Hey bro i am an 11th level rogue in STAP and i am loving it. I too am heavily relient on my +3 magic long bow. i am not real sure what the scout class is exactly but from what i've been told its similar to the rogue calss. i found that the only way to really get into the STAP while maintaining your class is to beef up your weaponry and take fighting feats while throwing in all your skill mods. to things like diplomacy, disable device, search, move silently, sleight of hand, tumble, balance, etc...
do scouts get sneak attack bonus?

Hi,
I think scout is a very good option (I am a DM in STAP).
However, since it has a few weaknesses (BAB, use of comp shortbow instead of longbow), I would try to compensate this.
As I also play a ranger/scout in Shackled city, I would say that I have a lot of fun with that character.
The idea for taking a few ranger levels were to have a fortitude boost, free feats, favored enemy +2, possibility to use a composite longbow instead of the comp. shortbow, and a BAB boost.
My PC in SCAP (I hope it helps or gives you ideas) is :
- scout 6 / ranger 4 (with distracting attck option from PHB2 instead of animal companion).
I intend, from now on, to take at least 2 Order of the bow initiate levels (from Complete Warrior : close combat shot is great at 2nd level, and the will save boost is not to be neglected).
After that, I intend to take at least 2 other ranger levels (manyshot as a bonus at level 6 & another favored enemy at level 5) / 2 other scout levels (bonus feat at level 8).
The feats I chose (beside endurance / track / rapid shot from my ranger levels), are (my PC is human) :
- precise shot / point blank shot / weapon focus (comp longbow)
- iron will (will being my worst save by far) / improved toughness (I always choose to have more HPs, and it has saved me already) / heroes' luck (from PG to faerun ; if I was not playing in FR, I would have chosen one of the luck feats from complete scoundrel, I guess).
If I could, I'd like to take :
- a feat from complete scoundrel that lets you add ranger & scout level when you determine your favored enemy & skirmish bonuses (I forgot the name) ;
- dive for cover (great with evasion, and stand up skill trick from comp scoundrel) ;
- improved rapid shot (you need to have manyshot IIRC).
Regarding skills, I emphasize on :
- tumble (getting through threatened area w/o AoO is good, especially when you choose to skirmish),
- move silently / hide (I am a scout !),
- search / disable device (I am the roguish guy in my group),
- spot / listen
- and I also put a good deal of skill points in : speak language / survival / jump / craft (bow) [for becoming an OoTBI]
- I am also beginning to take some skill tricks from the complete scoundrel.
And the items I have tried to acquire to become a greater scout / roguish recoinoter :
- quiver of Ehlonna / Heward's handy haversack (those 2 items let you carry lots of stuff w/o carrying a heavy load),
- a good comp longbow
- a good light armor (mithril chain shirt)
- slippers of spider climb / ring of feather fall (I can go almost everywhere with those 2 items).
My 2 coppers...
And good luck !!
May Tymora (or Olidammara) be with you...

Manyshot. Because your best damage comes from the ability to move and attack, you wont need Rapidshot (because of it's full round action requirement). I would also suggest Shot on the Run, as you can use it to shoot from the most advantageous point in a movement to another advantageous point (like behind full cover), rather than having to stay put after shooting.

What feats should i get to maximize the killing potential of a scout using ranged weapons?
Ok take Rapid Shot and Multishot ASAP! If you are good with a bow it should negate most of the penalties at this point.(I think its a -2 to hit per arrow but you can fire two arrows a round; two on your first attack and two and your second.) My rogue has these feats and is shooting eight arrows a round. Major damage and magical bows help. And take weapon focus for accuracy and weapon specialization and greater weapon specialization for increased damage.

ok rapid shot sounds good. the only problem is that i want to skirmish and it seems manyshot is a full attack. also i'm taking swift hunter and picking up a ragner class. any ideas on favored enemies for the savage tide? plus i still need good ranged feats that can use skirmish as well. unless there is a way to get a 10 move step instead of the normal 5? i looked up those one boots and thats only 3 times a day or something so that wont work.

i guess there isn’t anything that would really work. the only thing i found is a monk item that you have to train with for 1 month 8 hours a day uninterrupted and that would give you a 10' move instead of 5' which is to hard to do. plus you need a monk lvl.
so what are the best standard action ranged feats?

This might not be much use to your longbow-wielding scout, but...
I DM a scout and he's made very good use of the Combat Reflexes feat combined with reach weapons. He tumbles (with Mobility), takes his attack and then continues to get his skirmish for all those AoOs that comes when monsers close with him. He's very effective. So with one feat used (presumably at 6th level) and a longspear your scout could become a very versatile and effective ranged/melee fighting machine.

I don't believe I'm violating my writer's contract when I post the feat titles, since they are indexed in the DragonDex online anyway, so here are the names of the feats from my article in case you want to look it up:
Acrobatic Skirmisher
Improved Acrobatic Skirmisher
Mounted Fighting
Passive Reconnoiter
Ranged Skirmisher (I get the feeling you'll want this one!)
Scout the Path

I'm fairly sure you can't use shot on the run and manyshot together... just to be aware. Its in the D&D FAQ.
Greater Manyshot is not Epic (I believe that's Improved Manyshot) and comes from the Expanded Psionics Handbook. Its pretty awesome. Allows you to fire each arrow at a different target and precision based damage applies to each arrow. Seperate attack roll for each arrow. Pretty damn awesome for a scout.

ok how does this sound?
1st: precise shot, rapid shot
3rd: lucky start
4th: point blank shot
6th: improved skirmish
8th: dodge
9th: manyshot
12th: mobility, greater manyshot
15th: unbelievable luck
18th: fortuitous strike
20th: shot on the run
sounds good to me! plus i'll get some skill tricks
corner perch, wall jumper, spot the weak point, clarity of vision, back on your feat. but one of those i will use the charm so it wont cost skill points. not enough skill tricks or to many??????
