I have an Addiction

Off-Topic Discussions

I am addicted to Afrin nose spray. I know it sounds stupid, but I’ve been using it off and on for 5 years!!! I’ve quit cold turkey several times and have seen doctors, but at 2 o’clock and you’re can’t sleep because you can’t breathe, Afrin seems like a gift from God. I’ve tried everything to kick the habit for good. I am on day 2 of not using Afrin and I can’t breathe through my nose at all, my head feels like it’s going to explode, my eyes feel like they are going to pop out of my head, my lips are chapped from breathing through my mouth, and I sound like an idiot when I speak. It takes about 10 days for me to recover and be able to remotely breathe. I know this is a problem for more people than I would have ever guessed. Why do they sell the stuff??? I think I need to go to rehab or a group addiction meeting. My name is Fizzban and I have a problem.

My wife uses something she calls a "Netti Pot" or "Nesti pot" or something for that same reason. Suffice it to say that it has nothing to with iced tea, and the less said of its use, the better. But all it requires is some water and some salt, and she swears by it.

I've used one before. I've tried every thing, but I have total blockage, so the salt water can't flow through. Bahhh!!! I could kick a herion addiction easier than this.

Chocolate. I am addicted to chocolate. If I do not have some every day I can feel it. By some I mean enough that if I were not blessed with an extremely high metabolism I would be huge.

I can quit any time I want.

I am addicted to soda. Since the Dr. told me I have 'stomach issues' I have to limit my intake more than I like--which means there are moments in life where I don't have one with me. I even had to change to clear soda because it is 'gentler'.
My name is Shamgar and I'm a Vernors (soda) addict. Ugh.

Have you asked an ENT to do a nasal flush? Sounds horrible & it does taste bad but I found it worth it. I live close to Austin (one of the highest allergy places in the US) and I get that about once a year & use the netti pot about once every 3 months. I haven't used a nasal spray for 3 years!

TN is allergy hell. Damn farms every where!

Fizz

Understand completly, spent a lot of time on my grandparents farm. Seriously though, try the nasal flush from an ENT or Allergist, it's like the netti pot only with a bit more pressure behind it.

Try BreatheRight nasal strips...I use them to reduce snoring and they really help me. While they might not help with the addiction, the may help you reduce night time breathing panic attacks.

My addiction is St. Genevieve Merlot and Paulaner Salvator. I'm not an alcoholic, but I very rarely go a day without drinking at least one glass of Merlot and/or one pint of Paulaner Salvator.

My wife has horrible allergies all the time. The Netti Pot may be worth checking out. Anyone else interested can check out one of many sites that discuss it here.

lol I'm wearing one right now with mentholated vapor on it for cold and allergy relief. Thanks for the support and advice. I'm thinking about that nasal flush thing. It's bed time, time to fight for the right to breathe.

My girlfriends allergies and asthma are nearly gone since I ripped out all of the carpet in our bedroom and put in a decent air purifier. A drastic step but "when you can't breath nothing else matters", or something like that. So now I'm looking at staining the concrete or tiling the floor. So much for gaming....sigh.

Sounds like a drastic step but it's one that's well worth it. I just bought a house & one of the things I specified to the realtor was that it should have no carpet. I ended up with tile throughout, I've felt better the last 3 months than I have in years.

Something else is to try is the allergy filters for the A/C.

Forget tiling, a laminate flooring would be much easier to put in and give you a bit of "give" in the floor. HERE is a link to give a little info on installation. Usually you can find some stuff on the cheap but my suggestion is to find the cheapest stuff around (Costco, BJs, or other wholesalers usually carry a limit amount of choices but decent quality) and make sure you have heard of the name. A non-recognized name will give you a hard time with snapping together sometimes and becomes more work than it is worth. I did a 10X12 ft bedroom floor for around $200-250 a few months back and it took a day and a half of work (I had to patch the floor in areas).

Sorry to get off topic.

I'm no doctor or anything but...

Have you noticed if the symptoms are worst at home or in another specific area where you stay put for any duration of time.

If you sense that the symptoms seem to start when you get home from work or show up in the evening and/or during the night, you may have a mold problem, and would be wise to get your home air sampled by pros.

Thanks Fake Healer, I'll look around.

Computers. Love them. I have (at least) three of them, plus enough parts to probably make two. Doesn't matter what I do on them - game, draw, program, surf, post - must...have...them...

My doctor proscribed it for me, and I used it for a few months. It burned so gorramn bad that I had to switch to FloNase spray, which worked pretty well; AND, it's NON-NARCOTIC!

There was actually a huge rash of nasal spray addicts back when the stuff first came out. They actually put warning labels on the bottles nowadays not to use them for more than three days in a row. I used to swear by the stuff, but then I couldn't breathe without it. I ended up just having to buckle down and stop using it. Even now a decade later, nasal spray barely works for me anymore, so if I end up needing it it just doesn't do the job.

I am far from being a doctor, but my sister worked in the medical profession and is also an asthmatic. It sounds like you have rhinitis (literally an inflamed nose, but a medical description for chronic nasal congestion). You may have an underlying cause which is not being dealt with, such as a sinus infection, allergy (such as dust mites) or maybe even mild asthma. Obviously, most doctors are not going to be very excited by a case like this (it is hardly sexy medicine) but if you have the insurance you might want to get yourself checked out by an ENT specialist, and get tests for allergies too. It doesn't sound like the nasal spray is the problem, but your nasal passages.

Fizz - how are you going to conquer Africa when you can't even breathe through your nose? ;-P

Sorry if this is a repetition of a previous post - I haven't read the whole thing.

Ok it's about day 5 without the spray and I feel some what better, night time still sucks. The stuff is crack. I looked some stuff up and the nasal spray causes Rhinitis Medicamentosa. The spray causes the nasal passages to "super swell" after it wears off. They even make a different nose spray to get off Afrin type nose sprays...which you have to use for like two weeks...I hate the world. As far as Africa goes I am still planning to go, and I talked to a friend I went to college with from Nigeria about alot of things, but on this topic she said she never had sinius or allergy problems before she came to the south eastern United States and she's not sure how we breathe at all down here.

You could try irrigating with just a standard saline spray a couple times per day. It helps, not quite sure if it will help you.

how;s it going; did you try saline spray? works for me, my doctor said such and addiction was pretty serious; hope your getting that monkey off your back.
