Origin of Auric, Tirra, & Khellek

I just found out something that tickles me pink :)

When/where did Auric, Tirra, and Khellek first appear?

Do tell??

Wouldnt be the D&D cartoon or something would it? (That first illustration of them in Whispering Cairn or Diamond Lake backdrop always reminds me of the d&d cartoon...)

Well, they sort of come from _a_ D&D cartoon...

hmmm .... "a" but not "the" ...

so a comic maybe?

hmmm ...

I must admit I dont have a lot of ranks in knowledge (d&d lore) so Im probably not going to crack this.

Getting pretty warm, and of course Erik's burning hot.

The name Auric feels like it should ring some comic related bell, but I can't quite place it.

I'm almost certain it wasn't the Forgotten Realms comic books - from 10 years ago.

What about the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons comics from the same time period?

Hah. I wondered why Auric's hideous outfit looked so familiar!

I believe they were featured in a Dragon magazine comic in the '80s or so.

One of (if not the) first D&D comic strip advertisments in Dragon (I'm thinking issue 30 or 40-something), before the ones featuring the fighter valerius & Indel the elf. IIRC, there were only about 3 strips.

Tirra, Khellek and Auric are from D&D advertisements in Dragon Magazine in the 80s, yes. Also, a Kelek was an evil wizard who appeared as an action figure and in the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon (Episode 4 - Valley of the Unicorns, for those of you playing along at home).

I remember, as a kid, seeing what I think was the first ad -- to me Tirra was quite the hottie :P

And they all had the feathered hair of the early 80s.

Hmm.I remember them from comic books. I take it the ads were in Dragon too?

Were they the ones that fought the jackalwere?

If you dive back into the archives, you'll find pdfs of the original D&D ads that appeared in various DC & Marvel comics in the early eighties that featured these three iconic characters.

I know that, IMC, as the Whispering Cairn winds down and the PCs slid into TFOE, I cannot wait to pass out my prints of these comics. The "Dohs!" of recognition from my comic-collecting players will be priceless.

I was drawing a blank on those ads until I saw someone mentioned they encountered green slime. Then I totally remembered a picture of green slime dripping from a dungeon ceiling. Ah, memories...

IIRC, the green slime encounter involved Valerius, Indel, the wizard (Grimslade?), & a cleric named something like "Sarana." I think they were also the ones who fought the jackleweres.

Liberty's Edge

I /thought/ Khellek looked especially nefarious, and it's a well-known fact that all villains were more nefarious in the '80s. ;)

I loved the D&D cartoon (except for the episode with those obnoxious Cloud Bears...), I'm surprised I didn't recognize K sooner.

Anyone have a link or three where I can catch a glimpse of Auric and Tirra in their original rockstar-haired glory?

Liberty's Edge

Link to the first comic

Link to the second comic

Link to the third comic

If those don't work, try this link to my site for all three and other AoW stuff from my campaign.

Thanks for the links, Rexx!

I'm hoping my players watch the D&D DVD (lotsa "Ds"), and catch a glimpse of Khellek. I won't spoil the surprise for them, though.

I was given the D&D Cartoon DVD as a "gift". Sadly, they're as horrible in '06/'07 as I remember them being in '83/'84. Unless you liven up the viewing parameters. If you're 21 or older, the D&D Cartoon Drinking Game rules may interest you. Feel free to add.

I did catch the "Khellek" reference but the character in the 'toon seemed much more portly/short than the Khellek of D&D ad fame. Perhaps the pool of names were much shorter then... A earthborn teenager with the name "Presto" seems to be proof enough...

Liberty's Edge

Thanks, Rexx! I found some of the other old ad/comics, but not the ones featuring those 3. That is awesome.

A D&D cartoon drinking game? Count me in for that one. :)

Wrong wizard.

"Khellek" is not "Kelek."

This is Khellek, on the right: http://home.nyc.rr.com/agreenshields/utternonsense/Tirria-Auric-Khellek.jpg

The Exchange

Khellek the wizard, tirra the elf, and auric the fighter. Issue 53 dragon magazine, Ad on page 83.

My assumption is khellek set this dungeon delve up so the lawful elf perishes, and the lawful fighter auric gets a helm of alignment change turning auric into warduke. One for the forces of chaos...

:)

You're about seven and a half years late, Dingo.
