Ok, I think we all have been hearing various rumors regarding a 4th edition of D&D, many of them contradictory to say the least.

What has everyone heard, what if anything do we know to be a fact and what do we all think about the situation?

Thanks!

Dark Archive Bella Sara Charter Superscriber

Nobody knows anything. Wizards is pretty good at keeping a tight lid on their forthcoming products, particularly a flagship product such as 4e. They recently brought legal action against people that leaked information on upcoming magic sets in the face of non-disclosure agreements, so I think the people in the know are rightly fearful of providing information early.

In the meantime, all you're going to hear is speculation ("It's going to be a colletable trading card game with minatures and you can only play over the internet!") and whining/posturing ("I'll never convert! I've 'invested' money in these books and I will never acknowledge their inevitable decline in value!")

Liberty's Edge

Pshaw.
One man's whining is another man's stand for principle.

I'll be an old coot in the rest home playin' my 3.5, all my books in tatters. Young folk will seek me out to ask about the ancient mysteries of the good old days of D&D.
And I won't tell them. Cos that's the kind of "nice guy" I am.

That's why I edited my post to include posturing as well. There's no more principle here than in any other decision to purchase any other product. It's not like they're going to make the books out of dead babies and whale oil.

Edit: fix typo!

It's peeeoooople!! 4th ed. is made from peeeeooople!!

Well, you go right on ahead then and buy all the 4e. stuff. I'll pick up all the 3.5 stuff at half price books and everybody's happy. But I am not buying 4e. Forget it.

Oh, and you used "principal" wrong. I only know this because my 11th grade English teacher was ruthless.

Thanks - spelling mistake fixed.

And I will be by with the pie, coffee, and big ass I told you so grin when you do buy 4e.

I can see both sides of this, I think. I started playing D&D during the 'golden age' of the First Edition and was VERY dismissive when Second Edition came out. I tried playing it but really found a lot about it not to my liking (although some aspects I DID like). As is often the case, one tends to prefer and feel most at home with what we have our first experience with ...

I was actually rather skeptical of 3E at first but grew to love it. I questioned the need for a 3.5 so soon after 3E but found that the changes were for the best (for the most part)

Having said that, I don't know how I feel about a 4th Edition yet, especially since I have very little actual info about it, but if it does come out within the next year or so, I can't help but think that it would be too soon. I think people will feel like they are being 'cheated' into feeling they have to buy all new versions of the core books. Keep in mind most of us went out and purchased 3.5 versions of the core books after we shelled out cash for 3E versions only a year so before that

Right or wrong, a Fourth Edition so soon after 3E and then 3.5 just might not be a smart move. Are there that many things 'broken' with the current edition to warrant a new one?

Silver Crusade

I can make one prediction:

I'll buy it. I won't be able to help myself.

I know my weaknesses and accept them.

It's one of those things isn't it? I reckon WotC wouldn't bother making 4thE unless they were:
-Going to make a stack of cash on it
-Going to improve the game, in their opinion.

And they did well with 3.5, so I'm gonna trust 'em to make a 4th E I'll wanna buy. I'll probably find some info on it, and then when I've decided it's nice, get it. If nothing else, it'll be a nice change from the system that's been running the past... how many years again?

Thanks for enlightening us on why we hear only ungrounded rumors in this department, Sebastian. So, if and when it arrives, 4e will spring upon us like a Biblical apocalypse, out of nowhere. I can see why they wouldn't want to give us more than a couple months' notice, because we'd all stop buying 3.5 supplements, figuring we'd end up having to junk them. It's the Microsoft business model at work.

If and when that happens, I'll reserve judgement about whether to invest my money in an edition upgrade until I see the hypothetical product.

If it's anything like software upgrades on my computer, I'll probably stick with the old software until it's impractical to keep using it. I think 3.5 works perfectly fine, and any small tweaks to make it better we've already made by house rule.

They'll probably skip the fourth edition and come up with "Edition 5.3", just to screw with our heads.

That reminds me, I forgot the the third category of responses. People that approach the problem in a rationale and practical way and admit that they lack sufficient information to make a decision at this point.

(I suppose there's also a fourth category - people who would buy Antrahx and the Complete Toothbrushers Handbook from WotC if they sold it.)

Oh and as a complete aside: Dr. Seuss coined the word "nerd."

It came out last month...sheesh. I am looking at the cover with a gibbering mouther painted expertly by Wayne Reynolds. It's awesome. Some of the new classes are soooooooo freakin cool! I love the "Warlock Prince of Fighters." I'm gonna try that class out first. It's like that new feat "DO MORE DAMAGE" was just made for him. Can't wait to play this game!

A D12 system...so simple...so genius!

PREACH IT! The D12 system is revolutionary and the WPoF class feature "Smile on the Void" is perhaps the coolest thing I've ever read.

Why are these people still guessing at something that's out there already? The previews are all over the WoTC site. All speculation should be aimed at the 2011 release of D&D 5.0 Rumor has it that you just pay a monthly fee and a DM operator calls you up and tells you what you see and asks you what you do and tells you what the result is. It's a contest for money and is more of a forking narrative like the old video game Dragon's Lair, where you need to keep making the proper choices at each fork to advance. It's sad what's happening to our game.

I know! 5.0 is gonna be the cat's pajamas! Can't freaking wait until 2011...Sixth World Here We Come!!! WOO-HOO

Back to 4.0 though, I thought WPoF was the way to go, but dude, scratch that! I am totally gonna play an Avatar-Eating God Priest first!!! I can't believe Shake and Bake Pantheon is only a 2nd level spell!!! So tasty!

Besides if take enough skill points in Knowledge (metacreative genesis) I can qualify for the Despot of the Multiverse prestige class at 5th level. To quote Borat: "NICE! I am very excite!!!"

For those of you still speculating, just get the book already and start those d12s a rollin'! Woo-hoo!

And those monsters! That tiny sized CR91 newt-ron is so hard to defend against. I mean, it's a tiny lizard that can roast a city if you so much as bump into it. The only way to survive these li'l bastards it is to have a Reptiliax Arcanometrist in your party with all of his skills dumped into Newt-ron Expertry. I guess every player should have the All Asses And Elbows feat so they can book in the opposite direction of the shock wave at double speed.

Very very informative.

Back to 4.0, My buddy who games in my group out here is going to make an Unnamable Sibilant Horror of Doom for our first adventure. Cool cool class with loads of useful abilities like "Don't Bother Rolling Spot" and "Gotch Yo Ass Mofo!" not to mention "Laugh Over Your Cooling Corpse." The bonuses they get to Disembowlment checks are totally absurd too. The more I think about it, the more I want to play one too. I wonder if two Unnamable Sibilant Horrors of Doom would be a little too redundant in the party.

Yes; I will buy the fourth edition...and the 5th...and the 6th, and so on. I've been playing for 30 years and am not about to stop now. As far as different editions are concerned; I have never understood the gripe. If it's a good adventure; I will simply adjust on the fly to make it work with the current rules and agreed house rules. Therefore in my world, I have more to choose from compared to the edition purists.

As for all you players out there, and you know who you are, that seem to have an endless amount of time to try out all the more--and less--popular rpgs; all i can say is that I totally envy your lives. ...backing out of the room while humbly bowing repeatedly, chanting in repetition: "I'm not worthy."

I love how the All Asses and Elbows feat chains into Just Plain All Ass, not necessarily an intuitive feat chain, but wow is it useful. Though really its only useful if you are playing a Motorcycle Magazine Cover Girl, which is a pretty awesome class in and of itself, but just becomes waaay too broken with the Just Plain All Ass feat.

The Reptiliax Arcanometrist is cool too! I love how he's not too specilized at all. I mean arcane lizards...wow that covers the gamut really...especially considering the 78 new dragons in the Monster Manual 4.0.

The Toxic Cheetos Dragon is my favorite, with the TacoHell/PizzaSlut Dragon coming in a real close second. Mountain Dew Golems were just a little too silly for me though. I mean, you'd just drinka-drinka-drink em!

They use the term "hand-and-a-halfer" cause its more PC. And yes, every class can use one. I like the regrouping of Weapon Proficiencies a lot! No more simple, martial, exotic. Now we've got Richard Gere Weapon Proficencies (hamsters were a strange choice), Schwarzenegger Proficiencies (I like how you get to say "You're Luggage" as a free action when ever you full attack), and Jet Li Proficiencies...in that order. I would totally play the Plucky Young Hero Who Somehow Beats Badassed Enemies class, except I hate being limited to Richard Gere weapons.

You think that's bad. The Book of Cirklojercian Magic Items features the Peter Frampton Stomach Pumped Potion of Stardom or its magically crafted cousin, the hit point restoring, Ooky Gucky Cookie. Not to my taste. Not at all.

Shout out to the Humpty Dance Dragon. See, now. I couldn't have even conceived of such a brute.

The Humpty Dance Dragon is so old skool! Its supernatural ability "Ugly Visage" is totally badassed.

We just played our first session...like five minutes ago...between my posts here...yeah, that's the f+&~ing ticket!...anyway...we faced off against the Humpty Dance Dragon in its plush-ride lair (cool extra to include in the monster entry I thought). My Avatar-Eating God Priest went down like a chump when Humpty's Busty Vixen minions layed on their attack, but thankfully my buddy Ted Bundy was playing a Motorcycle Magazine Cover Girl and was totally not havin any of that snizzle. Ted's Cover Girl droped the Vixens, but then the Humpty Dance Dragon's Quick-Step-A-Rhymin' put her down like a box of rocks in Shirley Jackson's The Lottery(she failed her Save vs. Massive Damage...ugh!). The result...TPK.

On second thought, I guess I should have gone with the Warlock Prince of Fighters. Next time, Gadget, Next Time!!!

I can jump on this prediction wagon just like everyone else :)

My prediction: there will be no 4/e -- Hasbro doesn't like D&D, they just like minis. D&D serves to maintain interest in minis.

That's the story, once and for all :P

BTW this appears to be message 123450 on these boards -- how cool!

I don't understand why there's mention of time machines.

I've already got a preorder in for the leatherbound MM6 Special Edition. What stores are you guys shopping at?!

Right here, like Nick said... Taco Hell/Pizza Slut dragon, and they stat up a ranger version that has a Personal Pan Satyr as cohort and a pet purple burrito, like a purple worm only it can be swallowed whole. Aw, just like a bite-size attack dog.

Remember these things:

Fantastic Four issue #1
Spiderman issue #1
Avengers issue #1
when these comic books come out in the 1960's, buy 1,000 copies of each and place them in vacuum-sealed bags in pristine condition in a safe deposit box.
