DMs don't let yer PCs grow up to be Pirates!

Savage Tide Adventure Path

I know that mine are going to want to be pirates within the first 3 adventures. Maybe "Han Solo" styled pirates but pirates never the less.

I think I'll let them. Might even encourage it.

Yo ho ho anna bottla Brass Monkey!

My group is starting to make the cast of the anime One Peice look like normal pirates comparitively.

They ditched the ballista at fort blackwell when the Ice Troll started throwing cannonballs at pirate ships.

The cold sorc froze a huge monstrous crab to the side of the boat, then proceeded to freeze it solid.

The druid wild shaped into a crocodile while saftey tied in the crows nest, then proceeded to jump out and swing around like a fanged pendulum.

Then the dwarven cleric... don't even ask.

Pinata!

Mine were pirates from the get go, starting off with the party's leader actually deciding to name himself Capt. Arrr. Everyone else chose pirate names to, and anyone from outside the party who joins is given a new pirate name.

So far, they have not been particularly evil, though they have no qualms about taking advantage of some free loot lying around and are not opposed to stealing. They seem to be drawing the line between killing evil doers versus killing good folks so at least they won't go down in history as blood thirsty pirates.

The desire for a party of pirates was so great that I actually let them find "The Pirate Manual: A Guide to Pirate Lore and Life" in an abandoned house (a book I made up for flavor that has mostly useless knowledge like sea chanties, pirate terms, and pirate etiquette). I determined the book gives you a +1 circumstance bonus to Pirate Lore (my made up knowledge) which deals very specifically and narrowly on only pirates, most of which isn't really true anyway. I may expand it to allow a bonus to playing pirate style games like pin the tail on the magister or something further down the line.

Needless to say, the whole adventure is wrapped around the PCs being pirates who happen to adventure (and hopefully save the world if they aren't distracted by treasure).

The Exchange

There's certainly nothing wrong with having a party full of pirates. They can have plenty of worthwhile adventures, and tell plenty of great stories that both dm and characters will enjoy. In the end, isn't that really all that matters?

I like the idea of an all pirate party.

We use lead minis and I'm thinking about painting up a bunch with swashbuckler theme for the players to choose from when they create characters. Of course I will have many of the old typical fantasy favorites but when they see the one eyed halfling with the sling and the various pirate scallawags I think they will take the bait.

If your talking about the reapermini's halfling pirate, he's got a ladel not a sling. I've got a guy using it. He even had his charater make a steel ladel to use as a mace.

hehe this thread started with a line very much like an old country wester song; Mama's dont let your X grow up to be cowboys; hehe while your singing is close

Ladle is a strange weapon but i'd give it a try.

Maybe not so good at high level but fun!
