Voodoo in the Savage Tide

Savage Tide Adventure Path

Is anyone considering a voodoo twist on the magic of the Savage Tide Adventure Path? Not all spell casters but a few could use rum, tobacco, dolls, gris gris.

What do you think?

I like the idea. At the very least some superstitious people that shake the gris-gris at you when you walk by would add flavor... ;)

Hmmm...adepts with ranks in Alchemy, and that feat from frostburn...the one that lets you cast spells with a longer casting time, but you get...some...kind...of benefit...

Damn...maybe I should revisit this when I am at home, lol.

Even just refering to the various gods as "Loa"or Spirits might add to the flavor. Citizen who fear the evil eye and carry small wards against it. Spell casters who have titles such as Papa or Mama.

The binder class from Tome of Magic seemed to me to have some voodoo relations. Being possessed by the spirits has a strong conection to voodoo in my mind. Truenamer might work well to, with his/her ability to influence you based on familiarity.

What about Incarnum? I mean, it's literally 'soul magic.'

I'm a HUGE FAN of "Naymbe" African Adventures. This 3.0 book has some great Voodoo ideas. You can often find it cheap.

I'm basing the natives of the Amedio and environs and any barbarian N/PCs on the Maori tribes of New Zealand and other Southern Pacific cultures.

I always thought of the natives in that area as being more Central American in style. I thought the people of the Isle of Dread had more of that ethnic twist too. I seem to recall a Jeff Dee cover back in the 80's.

Maybe Santaria would be a better spin?

When preparing for STAP, I did a fair amount of research into the tribes that dominated the Solomon Islands and New Guinea ca. 1920. There's some great stuff there.

- hunts for giant turtles.
- taboos about women even looking at a boat before it's been put in the water.
- men with live butterflies sewn into their elaborate headgear.
- caves full of skulls

All sorts of yummy stuff to put into a game. You'll find that the people of the South Pacific offer great inspiration!

EP those ideas are great!

I know sea turtle meat was common food for pirates in the Spanish Main too!
