Downer - Uh...wait...when did you handle the Neogi problem?

Did I miss a strip (or possibly even a panel) in Downer? I don't have my issue in front of me, but it seems like there was an exchange between Downer and Random Thieves Guild Dude (RTGD) in which RTGD says that he owes Downer for taking care of the neogi problem. The last time I remember the neogi showing up in the strip was 4-5 months ago, and at that time they had Downer and his party (presumably) charmed. I'm not sure how this took care of the problem.

Maybe the elf and devil took care of the problem while Downer was killing four and twenty blackbirds. That's my best guess. Anyone have a better idea?

What, Downer confusing?

I actually meant that Downer agreed that he WOULD take of the neogi problem. My bad. Strangely enough, I'm drawing those scenes right now.

I've asked this before, but don't remember getting an answer. For those of us who started into Downer fandom halfway through the story, will there ever be a way to go back and pick up on the missing parts of the story, before the earliest one posted on the web? I have the issue with #1, and have not seen 2-16 yet.

We are working on the particulars of bringing a compiled version of Downer to print. Stay tuned, and we should have some sort of announcement shortly. In the meantime, I think Kyle has some episodes up at superunicorn.com/kyle.

Thanks, Erik. I've seen all the episodes at superunicorn, and will be eagerly awaiting the compilation!

I finally got around to re-reading the strip over the weekend, and the statement is not past tense like I thought (which leads me to believe that I really need to have an issue in front of me before I go off b~+@~ing, see also the comic book reference thread). Thanks for the clarification.

Also, I feel like I rib on Downer a lot, so I wanted to say that the strips leading up to and including the battle with the Time Bird have been the highlight of the series for me. Good stuff.

And thanks for giving some love to the neogi!

The Exchange

Personally, I have lots of problems tying any of the strips together in a coherent order. Maybe I'm not used to comics, but I don't really get Downer.

For those of us who entered mid-story, what is a Chronotyryn and when\where did Downer find the ulolok?

PS: Downer is awesome and the story is very cool (multiversal competition for the role of god of games). I just wish I could follow it from the beginning.

PPS: I love the dark ones, and I did almost exactly the same thing that the Needleman did to Downer last issue to my players a year ago.

If I recall correctly a chronotyryn is a CR 20+, LE outsider, who can control time (they can even cheat and do two things in one round). Their feathers I believe are adamantine. You can find them in Fiend Folio.

As for the ulolok that was a while ago and I am hard pressed to remember right now with my allergy medication kicking in. Zzzz**...

Downer got the Ulolok from the beholder Manglecramps in the very first story arc that began way back in the 90s (the Dungeon issue numbers, not the decade). For a long time it appeared that the Ulolok was a bell-shaped artifact, but that in fact was a prison for what Downer later called "some kind of retarded chicken."

We've since learned that the Ulolok is the result of a coupling between a slaad and a modron, and that is an important game piece in the struggle to become the God of Gaming, which is taking place between a number of high-CR Outsiders based in Sigil. One of these players is, or rather was, the chronotyryn, who built the original Ulolok cage to imprison the creature. We do not yet know how it came into the possession of Manglecramps, but the next issue will reveal a bit about which player was behind the group of adventurers Downer dispatched in the first episode of the strip (hint: she wears lipstick).
