All Alone?

3.5/d20/OGL

For years, 26 to be close to exact, I have been reading and thinking of playing my favorite game, Dungeons & Dragons!! I have owned so many different TSR and Wizard's products over the years and have collected an impressive amount of the game's products from minis to books! I love this game very much!! It is by far an infatuation! The funny thing is though, I can never get anyone to play. Half the time when I tell people I play D&D, they look at me like I'm crazy or they laugh and say something stupid or derogatory or both!! I hate that!! The older I get the harder it seems to get a game or group of people together. My wife will play, but I can tell she's really not into it and that she plays just because she knows that I love it. She is coming around to the game a little more every year though. I've allways wanted to find a good loyal group of players to play but have only been able to find only one person at a time. The only time I've ever had 2 people actually play as characters while I DMed was at my little brother's old house like 7 years ago. It was my wife, my little bro, and myself as DM. My wife played 1 character, my brother played 2 characters, and I played one also while I DMed. That's the closest I've ever came to a real game!! We did have a great time though. I just wish I could find 4-6 players that I could DM for regularly or just a group that I could play a character in every week. I want a weekly game!! AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!! I've tried alot of game stores but the games they have are allways filled and have no room. I've tried posting an add at store for gamers wanted but no one ever calls. I love the game, but it is frustrating when all I ever get to do is just read the rules and look at my figs. Alas, my passion that I have for the game will never end because I do enjoy reading the books and collecting the figs, I just wish I had more people to share them with, in game.Am I All Alone??

Naw, you're not alone. Hubby and I went seven years between games at one point because we couldn't find anyone who was interested in playing. It was sheer hell! I feel for you. Have you tried posting in the gaming connection on this board?

Where do you live, Irish?

Stuff to try:
Findplay, a database of players organized by city. Maybe there are a dozen local people just waiting for you to organize them.

Do a google search for forums set in your home town (or a nearby one). Join and kibbitz about gaming until an opening comes.

dnd.meetup.com-- lots of entries, searchable by zipcode. Become a meetup coordinator if your area lacks one.

Visit your local college (the closest to you) and see if they have a games club, a sci-fi club, or anything similar. Stop by for a meeting.

Ask your brother if he knows anyone who'd like to try roleplaying.

Be "out" about gaming; put a Go play sticker on your car, carry a game book with you to lunch. There are a lot of gamers who got out of gaming because they couldn't find/keep a group, but would love to get back-- for nostalgia, if nothing else. Heck, idly roll a d20 on the table at Jack in the Box-- if someone recognizes it, you've got a conversation starter.

Try the gamestore thing again; make your advertisement a blurb for a specific cool adventure. Include tear off tags with your phone number or email, so the people without pencils & paper can still contact you.

Hope the ideas help.

Also the RPGA is a resource i have used to get a group together. They have a thing on their site for you to post that you are looking for players and groups post there that want more players and such.

Thank you, very helpful.

if none of these suggestions work; you will just have to wait until we all retire to the same retirement village for gamers; we had a thread going for that a while back; dont remember if we ever picked a place, but wow that would be a great thing; a whole community of gamers, retired and dedicated to gaming. sigh; I still dream bout it; maybe someone will dig up the thread;

also, you can play by email or in chat sessions; I have heard of a few of these but have not joined one yet though at one time I really wanted to give it a try. I still would if I could find an interesting game; would run one if I knew how to do one online or could figure out an inexpensive way to do it. the Dork Tower comic has one of their players playing by using a camera and some type of messanger voice or chat or something; that might work to; everybody should be able to find a game in this day and age to suit his/her style and gaming needs. Best of luck to you.
