What happens to Skies Treasury after Foundation of Fire?

Shackled City Adventure Path

My party is just starting Chapter 4 and I have only written up my version of Skies Treasury to Chapter 5.

I always assumed that the players would be too busy in Occupitus during Chapter 6 to warrant new items for the chapter but I thought I would include Chapter 7 at a later stage.

Cauldron only has a realtively small maximum gold piece amount so is it realistic to make an exception with Skies Treasury?

SO my question is...

What happened to Skie after Chapter 7 when Cauldron is evacuated?

Where will the players buy magical items from beyond this point - Sasserine?

Is a magical shop needed at all beyond chapter 5?

I really think Sasserin is the best choice. By that level the PCs should be able to teleport or use other fast magics to travel quickly between the two with little problems. And don't forget we will now soon have full details on Sasserine so you can even play it out if you so choose.

Other ideas would be to use one of the merchants who trades with Sasserine as a go between. I seem to remember one of the prisoners in Life's Bazaar specifically being perfect for this task. Or perhaps Maavu...

With the exeption of the PC's (and perhaps the stormblades), Skie doesn't really have a market for items beyond cauldron's gp limit. who's going to buy them? Vhalantru has done a good job of keeping the city clear of high-level adventurers after all.

I think Sasserine would be the best source for more expensive items. I don't see why Skie could not oder them for the PC's. After a hefty down-payment of course

Coryston Pike is the prisoner being tortured when the party rescues her in Drakthar's Way; she's the scion of a shipping household, the local representative in Cauldron. Her family's main offices are supposed to be in Sasserine, and I eagerly await details on that business, particularly since I told the players she would be giving them ready access to more things than they would ordinarily be able to get (rather than a discount).

Is it worth writing up a new collection of items for Skies Treasury for the beginning of Chapter 7?

Should I just create a new shop/location to purchase items in Sasserine?

Alas... things did not go well for the Pike family after Coryston was abducted and held prisoner. In fact... her family spent a lot of effort and money trying to locate her and more or less ruined their fortunes. The Pikes were forced to sell most of their family holdings to the Toregson family. At least... this is the state of affairs at the start of Savage Tide; the events in Shackled City take place a few years earlier...

If your PCs in Shackled City rescue Coryston and take the time to make sure she gets back to Sasserine, it'd be cool if instead the Pike family survived and even prospered. Of course, you'd need to make a change to the version of Sasserine we've developed for Savage Tide, but it's a relatively minor one (especially since neither the Pikes nor the Toregsons play a role in the actual Savage Tide Adventure Path).

James,

Even though my group is no where near playing Age of Worms let alone the Savage Tide (we're only up to Chapter 4 in the SCAP!) I really like the links in the Savage Tide to Cauldron. The noble family connections give Sasserine more a familiar feel considering we have all met and used the noble family names regularly during the SCAP.

I'm a long way off using the next two AP but that hasn't (and won't) stop me collecting the adventures and materials linked to each.

Do you think it is worth my time to write up more chapters for Skies (beyond 5th level)?

Should I create a new location to purchase magical items in Sasserine for my party?

Where does your party purchase magical items in the later chapters of the path?

Yes, please write up more inventory lists for Skie. My group will be coming back from occipitus soon and those little backstories makes the store come alive and has even paid off with the PCs getting a whispered clue that the mayor has lost control of things and that the quill that a PC bought belonged to the mapmaker that another PC visited.

Warrior needs food, badly. ;)

Glad to hear the stories are useful :)

Did the party act on the news of the Lord Mayor or be rewarded by Bolar (mapmaker)

What do you mean by - 'Warrior needs food, badly.' Do you mean they would like more warrior specific items?

Should I MOVE Skie to Sasserine after chapter 7 or just create a new location in the city for items

Delvesdeep

I would welcome her move to Sasserine, myself. In my game, Skie has an unknown source in Sasserine that she deals with to sell and acquire merchandise. It could be a relative, part of a Skie's franchise, or just a cooperative associate. I haven't worked that out yet. Moving Skie's to Sasserine could result in a larger shop, as she merges with the other magic item broker.

I also think it makes the most sense for the PCs to seek any new items in Sasserine following the eruption. Cauldron will most certainly take an economic hit as a result and the city would never be able to support the merchandise the PCs will want at those character levels. Not only could Skie choose to relocate for fear of future eruptions, it makes good economic sense as well.

Skie has become such a great NPC that it would be worth the effort to keep her around, even into Savage Tide if the timeline permits.

Besides, you know I would never tell you to write LESS!

Regards,
Koramado

They will act on the news when they come back from Occipitus by doing some heavy investigation and research. The mapmaker did the recovery cost he offered to get his pen back. I did change the pen's function so that it "merely" created maps that keeps someone from rolling on the teleport table when they teleport to a location on the map on which they are concentrating.

No. That's a quote from the old Gauntlet video game that indicates that I'm hungry for more descriptions. There's also "Valkerie is about to die" and "Elf, you shot the food!"

I don't have my map handy. If her shop gets totalled, then she will want to have her sunken magic items salvaged by her favorite adventuring party (she may even go along with them if she is inspired by heroic PCs). Then moving to Sasserine may be the thing to do, particularly because of the heavy taxes and unstable government. But she may be persuaded by visionary PCs to do otherwise.

I like the idea of Skie packing up shop and moving to Sasserine.

Perhaps expanding on what Frank said above, have the characters help her recover anything salvageable from the old store and then act as her body guards for a trip there if they need the xp from a land travel / side trek.

Or if the PC's have access to teleport they can get her there quick, but perhaps she is a bit cagey about staying in Sasserine by herself without a shop set up to her liking so she hires them at that end for more guarding.

Either way, good chances for the party to further ingratiate themselves with Skie :)

Okay, the PCs have come back from Occipitus last game, and I really could use some Skie updates. One problem is that the players found a sun blade (from that cool list of exalted swag posted in this messageboard) in the Cysts and it was the only item that the TWF rogue/sorceror/arcane trickster wanted, but the cleric of pelor claimed the item and is not willing to allow a nonPelorite to wield it. Undertandably, the Arcane Trickster is quite unhappy about this. So, I figured that I could include some cool items in Skie's inventory that a dual-shortsword wielding arcane archer could appreciate.

Any ideas?

hmm, not sure man. Any item that would compete with the sunblade would go over the GP limit. though I've always thought Luck Blades (with 0 wishes) and Swords of Subtlety were kinda cool. Or maybe a scabbard of keen edges.

I've not really used the treasury as the only means of getting magic in the city. I've used it for the main way, yes, but there are other methods. I also don’t expect her shop to keep up with the level of the PCs to be able to provide them magic throughout the whole campaign. I see her as having the lower priced magic items for the most part, rings, cloaks, neat small items and stuff like that, mostly under the city’s GP limit. The higher priced items the group would have to go to Sasserine or have them made. In my campaign, the temple of Wee Jas can make items, but you get put on a waiting list and they get made when they get made. And there is a nice markup when going that method as well.

plus, the city has been growing in my campaign (lots of new half-orcs and perhaps people who used to live in the jungle or surrounding areas have moved to the city for safety), maybe the limit has gone up a thousand or two, enough to go to 16,000 to get some items that have a higher price range.

as far as Skie's Treasury goes after Foundataion of Fire, I also would like to have an update to the file.

the volcano doesn't erupt till chapters 9 and/or 10. That gives chapters 6, 7, and 8 to continue to sell items. yes, the players are not in the city in chapter 6, but others are. people will still be buying and selling things to her. if the inventory isn't updated in chapter 6, then it feels like the PCs are the only ones shopping there. it would seem more real and dynamic that things continue without them.

As for her leaving after the eruption, I don't know. I feel that Skie has a certain loyalty to Cauldron and her clients in the city (with all the signatures and names on the outside of her building). Sure, the city is hurting, but would she just leave it? If people are going to stay behind to help rebuild or continue to live there, I think she would stay to help out. If that means keeping her shop open to continue to do business with those people still there, so be it. she wouldn't abandon the people or the city. besides, she loves stories. What better story could she have than to survive an eruption and then continue to do buiness afterwards? if the PCs are successful at the end of chapter 10, it says the city can be rebuilt. I think she'd stay.

just my opinion. :)

YES PLEASE!!! I loved those pre-made lists of magic items. My party did too, as they loved the little tid-bits of history.

I'm using Sasserine and Greyhawk now for magic item purchases. I don't really think Skye could keep up with high level parties.

See above.

Delves, those lists of pre-made magic items were great. If you could do some more of them, you'd make me (and many other lazy DM's) VERY happy people.

OK. I'll see what I can do.

I'm busy writing up a side trek for my party at the moment and also have plans to write up the Seige of Redgorge but I'll try and write up Chapter 7 (with notes on what happened to Skies during Chapter 6) after the side trek.

So probably in the next few weeks depending on my other great great distactions - family and work.
