Dungeon 138 Dwarven Forge Mystery Set Add

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

There is an ad for the Dwarven Forge mystery set on the inside back cover of 138. What is it????? Someone please post the details.

I believe that info will be made public on Aug. 1st. I'll go to the boards there and double check.

If it is in an ad in the back of a magazine it is already public.

it is nothing that I couldn't do with the Hirst Arts molds and #10 of plaster for a fifth of the price.

Thanks Chris. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. You are the best!

Yep, me too. Only I use Merlin's Magic (easy mix, great strength). Even if I had to make the molds for the casts I wouldn't come close to what DF charges.

The mystery set will be made public Aug. 10th. The add advertises the fact that there is a mystery set.

Going to the DF Boards, this still stands.

Having used HA Blocks and DF pieces - I save a lot of time and money with my Dwarven Forge. Cost effective in the long-run.

from DF website:

**And what is that something "special"? It will be one complete set of the Mystery Set to be released at Gen Con Indy! That's right...you will get one of the three proof sets in existence -- complete with its hand-carved styrofoam box. This means that you will receive your set TWO MONTHS before anyone else! The only hard part is that you have to swear on the "gamer's code" not to let the secret out until August 10th. Feel free to taunt away on the DF Forum, but you can't reveal any info about the set. If you do...you will have bad gamer karma forever and you will never make a critical saving throw again!**

So, from that, the mystery set will be announced August 10 and released at Gen Con Indy.

Wrong yet again. They are posting pics on Monday. The AD is out right now. Its not a mystery any longer. You would think that the self appointed DF spokes person would be better informed.

Now for the love of god someone please post a description of the DF Ad!

That has become apparent. I think I will have a nice day.

DungeonMag #138 arrived here in Berlin yesterday.

Maybe I don´t get the joke, but where´s the deal in describing
the ad on the last page?

Here we go:

"Medieval
BUILDING
- set -

Not availlabe in stores - only at www.dwarvenforge.com"

The ad shows three photos. Two of them with wall pieces in good old german timber framed medieval style. The walls are white, irregular, with small cracks in them. They are lined with heavy brown wooden planks. Some or them have secret doors in form of bookshelves. There are some wall pieces with windows and some with doors. The walls are based on squared (1 inch I guess:-)) brown wooden floor tiles and arranged as a medieval house with four rooms. The third photo shows the whole set: 10 solid wall pieces with a 4 square floor
tile attached to each of them. 8 wall corner pieces with floor attached. 4 wall with window pieces, wooden floor attached. Ther is one secret-door-in-turning-book-shelf piece with floor. There are 4 wall pieces with a door and a small step in front of it. (No double doors as far as I can see.)
There are 13 four square wooden planked floor tiles without any walls. One of them is decorated with a bearskin.
Together these are 40 pieces.

The text on the bottom of the ad says: "Comes complete with all of pieces shown. Cast in highly durable poly-resin. Fully hand painted an outfitted with felt bottoms. Scale 25 - 28 mm.
$ 99"

In the right corner of the bottom there is a 10th Anniversary Dwarven Forge Insingnia.

That´s it.

Edit: I of course don´t guarantee for this description beeing correct!

Thank you very much, Loops.

Are you just being snarky and fun or are you actually trying to face me for some odd reason?

Sorry, didn't look at the add or have not been following up on my DF info like I used to.

I'll go post somewhere else now, thanks philipm!!

Well, the truth is out, and now, I will have to order 2 sets tomorrow!

To Lord Vile; grow UP! Language such as yours is NOT adult in a public forum. If you wish to address me, or someone else, in such manner IN PRIVATE, that's between you and me, or whoever you're talking to. In a public space, it is NOTHING more than evidence of your lack of vocabulary, lack of adult intellect, and generally poor attitude towards other people and their rights. It is also primae facie evidence of your lack of maturity.
Come back when you grow up, little boy.

And, just for the record, I USE Hirst Arts, I USE Dwarven Forge, and my ONLY complaint about HA is plaster sucks for scenery that is to be USED, but HA molds WILL, with care, survive RESIN (Some are designed for it as well); the other half of my complaint is that it takes TIME to make anything large with HA - but it's GREAT for those little somethings that others DON'T make. And since I'm also a member of the International Plastic Modellers Society, don't rant at me about being too lazy to build in HA.

See ya!

LOL, now who is acting like a child???

Let me ask you, how long did you spend looking up those impressive words in the dictionary???

I wish to address you IN PRIVATE. Please provide the necessary contact information.

Talk to you soon!!!

You're welcome! Glad I could be of service.

I love sarcasm.

Lord Vile wrote:

Well aparently SOMEONE cares about it otherwise there wouldn't be a thread on the forum's. would there? So the fact that one person cares about it totally invalidates your argument, Vile.

Name suits you well.

(Ducks the flying chairs and dice and plaster to enter...)

I just wish I could justify the price of DF items in my gaming.

And I will NEVER forget one convention I GMed at. The GM next to me had the most impressive DF-like scenery. One of the gamers at the table got up to get an order of nachos, he somehow managed to drag the tablecloth with him and WHAM! The whole side of the dungeon came crashing to the floor, shattering in a thousand pieces.

I thought the DM would cry, and when his wife came to collect him (and his broken dungeon setting), I think he DID cry.

I know DF is made of tougher stuff like that, but the sight and sound of the dungeon-crash still haunts me.

I agree with you about plaster and HA, I use Merlins Magic(like dental plaster) which is 3-5 times as strong as plaster of paris. My pieces would survive the fall with only mior paint chipping. I have spent around $300 so far and have the equivilent of $1300-1500 of DF. I have a ton of custom stuff too.

And on another note....
Lord Vile, you should head over to WotC's messageboards, they are filled with people who love flaming each other like children fighting over who is smarterest. These messageboards are usually civil and a great resource for mature gamers of any age. Let's try to keep it nice-nice.

Hmm will have to look into this Merlin's Magic. Dental plaster was on my list as there is a dental supply store in town, but this may be a good alternative. Can this be bought online?

A link to some info about Merlins Magic and the link to the seller, Clint Sales.
I love the stuff. Easy to mix, pour, and I get virtually no bubbles unless I am really careless.

That's a dang good question. Is the fat in your head oily or pasty?

If I ever move out near Paizo headquarters, I better have a job! Pickin' on the customers and all that.....You better give me a good word!

Thanks. That is why I let it go so off topic.

ON TOPIC: A guy from my gaming group sent me DF's newsletter and said he wants to buy a set. The newsletter states that if you buy 3 sets you get a FREE dungeon accessory kit and Furniture set (approx value $58). Cool, but who can afford to drop that kind of scratch beside a high-profile celebrity like Vic Wertz?

You could be the handy man. Handy man Fakey. And I could get people coffee and polish dice. Kinda jack-of-all-trades. I also got qualified on a floor buffer in the National Guard. That's the honest truth; I have the paperwork somewhere.

And we could game together with the Paizites......worth every bit of minimum wage!

P.S. being duct-taped to a buffer and sent on a ride doesn't really count as "qualified", Buffer-Boy!

Why just dice from Poland? Why not Lithuanian dice, or the Dice of Burkina Faso? Especially the Dice of Burkina Faso... then you could tell people they were flown in from Ouagadougou! An Ouagadougou die...yep!

Just sayin'.

Do you mean you could get people coffee and also get them dice from Poland, or do you mean you could get them coffee and polish their dice? It's a potentially crucial distinction.

Heathansson wrote:

We'd never hire an unqualified floor buffer.

Of course, we wouldn't hire a floor buffer at all, because 1) we have carpet, and 2) we don't own the building... but those points aside, if we hired one, dang it, we'd require qualifications.

Turns out that any idiot can be hired as technical director, though.

Whatever the job calls for. I'm all about...the mission.

Oh, and forgive me my dismal grammar. The idea of working with Fakey just got me all excited.

I don't find the price of Dwarven Forge stuff problematic. Sure, I could make it myself cheaper, but theres comes out looking better and it comes pre-painted. The hours it would take me to replicate the same effect wouldn't be worth it to me.

What stops me from buying Dwarven Forge is the space, weight, and care concerns. It's one more physical possession that would have to be moved whenever I moved, need to be dusted at least every few years, could lose bits, and so on. On top of that, I don't see myself being satisfied with what I can do with one or even half a dozen Dwarven Forge sets. I could set up some pretty interesting city adventures with 400$ in city pieces, and that's all good if my game is set in Ptolus or Lankmahr, but I don't want to have to drop another 400$ and wait two weeks for shipment the first time I run an adventure set in a dungeon. More importantly than that, this stuff is going to Take Up Space. If I ordered Dwarven Forge, I'd end up having a chest of drawers just for it, neatly organized, and it would need to be near the gaming table. That's a reasonably large space commitment and demand, cost aside. It's also one more thing I'd have to move.

For my part, I'd rather go with a projection table. Sure, it costs more than all the Dwarven Forge I'd ever use, but I can project ANY map onto the table. There's a lot to be said for the cool toy value of the physical artifact that is a Dwarven Forge set, but I'll go with the flexability of a projection table before I go for Forge.
