Starting a campaign, Age of Worms, or Shackled City?

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

Hi, I am just about to start a campaign.

I have read some of the AOW adventures and was a little confused (especially with 3foe). Anyways I am debating on buying back issues of dungeon to get AOW, or buying the shackled city hardcover.

I am leaning towards buying the hardcover because it is nice and revised (I hate errors in adventures, they confuse me). But I am wondering if people on the board have opinions?

So whadda you think? Shackled City or AOW?

This is a hard question to answer - they are both soooo good. But my vote goes for Age of Worms. I can say this with absolutely no bias whatsoever...at least until next month's issue comes out. ;-)

Both, but start with the Shackled City Hardcover. By the time you've finished all 12 adventures there might even be an Age of Worms hardcover, who knows.

Buying the SCAP hardcover will give you a well-thought finished product. It's worth the price.

To my mind, AoW lack good hooks, and if the meta intrigue is absolutely brilliant, the treatment is weak at best : explore dungeon, show clues to Allustan/Manzorian/the other wizard in Free City, go back killing monsters).

Have to agree with Bran on AOW. My players sometimes felt like they were playing Fedex the RPG going back and forth to Alustan. The SCAP hardcover is way better.

Thirded.

I now have SCAP hardcover and am reading it. I have noticed a lot of dungeon adventures and I am wondering if it will be as fun as AOW, it was really interesting due to the variety in adventures..

Shackled City gets my vote as well, but not for the same reasons the others have posted. I have really liked what I have seen so far for AoW. However, you can run Shackled City and after finishing it your players will have many interesting hooks that will get them fired up to find out more about some of the side notes and detailing from the Adventure Path.

With the Ebon Triad mentioned in Shackled City, dangling them in front of your players and letting them know that you've got more adventures centered around a group they already know could be a great way to spark their intrest. Just my thoughts on the matter. Hope it helps!

I've used some of the AOW path in my own campaign.

Before the AOW started I was set to using "The Obsidian Eye", with some twists to make it as a release of an apocolyptic BBEG. When AOW came out I added a diety to the original Ebon Triad and so far things are going well.

I can't wait for the Champions Games...I'm sure the players will love it.

ALthough I am woefully and unforgivably behind on my Dungeon reading I think you made the right call for many of the same reasons already posted here.

How has your campiagn been going?

What you should be aware of with SCAP is that it's Cauldron that's the main character of the campaign. Sure, there's a lot of dungeon adventures, but if you work on making the city alive the players won't notice that. Use a lot of foreshadowing, for example by introducing NPC's that will appear later early on in the campaign, and recurring NPCs and you and your players will have a blast.

Another way to make the city come alive is to use a campaign news letter where you mention rumors and the behind the scenes events that happen without player involvement (for example the tax increases, the reinforcement of the town guard with mercenaries and so on).
