Otto's irrisistable dance

3.5/d20/OGL

Hallo all,

I have a question for the rule-lawyers and the learned sages of the community.
Can a victim of Otto's Irresistible Dance cast spells with only verbal components? The spell's description says that the victim can do nothing but caper and prance but my player (whose character's life depends on it) claims that it refers only to movement and that the victim can still speak freely.
What do you think?

Sounds to me like your player is doing everything in his/her power to explain himself out of a certain fate. I hate when players do that, but I suppose it's inevitable when spell descriptions are ambiguous.

I would deam that "capering and dancing" is a full-round action, which means that the PC can do nothing but "caper and dance." No spell casting at all. Not even as a free action.

This spell is very annoying to DMs. The party gnome rogue/sorcerer/arcane trickster recently tagged an insane pit fiend with the spell. No save, only spell resistance, and the target is one big scary target.

Thanks! Haven't thought of it this way...

And my player is a dead man walking anyway, he is a 15th level sorcerer who challanged a 6000-years old, 18th level necromancer lich to a duel to the death. During the battle the Lich offered him 5 times to surrender and 5 times he declined.
Now the Lich is going to tear his soul apart.

Yeah, I agree. I don't think you can cast any spells, either.

The plus side for DMs is the short duration, 1d4+1 rounds. Also, the fact that it requires a touch attack, which makes it tough for characters with low hit points to ever really use on butt-kicking monsters with high attack modifiers, damage, and reach.

The Bard/Sorcerer/Arcane Trickster is lucky he didn't get smooshed.

Good luck on killing the PC with your lich, Uri. He's gonna get smooshed too. . .

I wonder how many drinks it took Otto to acually think of a spell that made you dance?

Just something to make you think...

Consider playing a disco song in the background during this guy's turn. That should remind him of his peril...

As a disco song choice, "Born to be Alive" would be pretty funny. :-)

"Staying Alive" would be better. ;)

The group's party level is in the mid-20s. And it's a ROGUE/sorcerer/arcane trickster. His hide checks are often in the 60s taking into account ranks, DEX, and magical items. With a spot check of +13, that pit fiend had no chance of avoiding the gnome's stealth. This wasn't a boss battle by any means.

I've got it! RIVERDANCE!!! THAT'D kill ANY monster! Or give the the extra ability to drink while dancing w/o spilling! ^.^;

What happened at the end is this:
The PC started riverdancing while screaming "Somebody please help me! Don’t let him kill me!" but since it was an honorable duel no one of the PC's horrified allies (almost 9,000 soldiers) approached.
Since the PC was very well protected from magic the lich calmly beat the PC into unconsciousness using simply brute strength and then he proceeded into giving the PC the "Yellow Bastard" treatment, that is, punching the helpless character in the head until his fists were hitting wet ground and skull shards.
Naturally, this left the PC’s army completely demoralized.

LOL, nasty. Uh. . . he didn't rip anything yellow off of the PC, did he?

EGADS! The horror of it all! I imagine something like what happened on South Park when the cows got the danching device. And now to imagine a pit fiend dancing like that! I shudder.

A bit from my Hoarde
