In a perfect world, how often would your game group get together to play?

If only work would stop getting in the way we could all game to our heart's content. I was just curious about how often everyone would like get together with their game group. I think about twice a week would be perfect? Often enough to satiate but infrequent enough to keep it fresh. Any thoughts people?

First instinct is, of course, to say "DAILY!" But you make an excellent point. I think twice weekly would be the perfect frequency, giving the DM days to prep and get ready, then spend 8 - 10 hours in a single session on those two days. ::sighing wistfully:: Ah, in a perfect world...

I remember a time (back in my highschool days) when we used to play almost every week night, and at least once during the weekend. And on top of that, we sometimes we pulled all-nighters.

But now, I think twice a week would be nice. Mainly because I have other interests now; Floor hockey, watching Lost, getting together with my other buddies that don't play roleplaying games, spending time with the family, saving the world...

Ideally, twice a week, but I would DM D&D one night, and play the other night. Preferably Rifts, D20 Modern, or a GURPS game. :-D

I like to keep two games a week active, one to DM and the other to play in. Of course right now I am without any games :( so I have to make do with evil plots of what might be.

In a perfect world-

Start every day at noon and game till 2 or 3 in the morning. Interrupt for calls of nature, pizza, smoke breaks, 30 minute swim breaks and prepping for future action.

That was my Golden Summer back in '91. Ahhh, high school...

I play once a week for about 7-8 hours on average and find it very satisfying. In a perfect world we would start around 2 or 3 PM instead of 7. And there would always be six players at the table!

Liberty's Edge

Ah yes, a perfect world...I had it once:

Converted barn that was strictly the D&D Shack, with comfy chairs, a full-size table with a sand-filled basin for miniatures, a 3'x6' dry-erase board in one corner, smoking a pack a night...okay, maybe not the last part in hindsight but...we started gaming Thursday night and would end sometime Sunday afternoon. Sure, plenty of breaks during that time, but it would be about 10-16 hours of gaming each weekend. Of course that was 12+ years ago, before kids, before college was over, before bills, before debts.

Now, a perfect situation is a weekly game for four hours every Tuesday. I'll take it but I still yearn for more. Big Jake, have a spot for another player?

I'd say two nights, like a monday and thursday, like 5-6 hours. Two different DMs, or a some system of same characters with different DMs. But also, in this perfect world I would have plenty of time to come up with adventures and so would my friends.

Yeah. Two nights, maybe three. And it'd be a campaign that was in for the long haul. Something I didn't have to DM.

In a perfect world...
I used to play 2 times a week in the past when I was a student, we played by night, we even made 24 hours long scenario....exhausting.
Now that we are all adult and working, some with families it's a long time we don't play by night anymore.
Now I try to play once a week but sometimes it's complicated to gather 5/7 players and we can't play at all.
Once a week would be perfect for me.

once a week. With 4 players and really good plotlines.

Back in highschool we gamed two or three times during the week and every weekend. Now we are lucky to get together every two weeks. But when we do we usually game for about fourteen hours. But I'd have to agree that two, maybe three times a week would be perfect. Preferrable with two or three different plots. I'd want one Marvel Universe setting, one D&D and probably one Star Wars.

A bit from my Hoarde

Twice a week would be great - but realistically, we'd only get to play for a couple of hours every night. Still, it might be better than it is currently. Right now our group has managed to go through 4 1/2 months of game time in almost three years of playing. :( We often have periods of two months or more where we can't manage to play ... although it can help our planning (you'd be amazed at how complex a plan you can come up with in two months) but I still wish we played more often. My wizard is about to start the blood magus prestige class, and I'm itching to try it out.

Heh heh. Well, probably twice a week, with a daily half-hour dose of D&D Online. I can dream...

In High School we used to play twice a week. Usually sometime during the week and then again on Saturday Night. The last weekend of summer we would get together for a 4 day RPG binge that would start at noon on Thursday. We'd go till about 2am, quit and play video games. We'd get up the next day around Noon and start the process over again until Sunday about 10pm. Those were great times of sleep deprevation and huge caffeine highs.

Now we play twice a month, the second and third Saturday of the month. I'd love to run/play more but our current gaming group probably couldn't handle it. Everyone has wives, careers, and kids that need to be appeased.

Ah the good old days.

About once a week as a player. But for a good long session about 5 hours or so would be great.

And all of the players would have the opportunity to contribute. Writing a treasure list (if the paln was a drow enclave for example someone would put together a list of drow stuff for the DM), details on roleplay (rather than a combat venue), write a PrC for an NPC. Stuff that the palyers could work on trade emails about during the week.

For me the prep, the discussion is a large part of the fun. But very time intensive, for my last group playing more than once a week wouldn't of worked for the level of detail we liked to play.

Also, I think play tends to be better if people come at it with experience from the world at large, and their gaming is a break from the grind rather than a lifestyle choice.

Unfortunately, right now I'm not really playing at all. I actually found a group playing in Dubai, but the demands of travel, work and family mean thtat I can't make regularly. To bad too the guys playing are all good guys.

Once a week, every week.

For me I would have to go a little more hard core and say three times a week. I will say though that the sessions would be only 5-6 hours, like a lot of the people who have posted here I have a bunch of hobbies that are also things I love to do. Come to think of it, this perfect world would also have 26 hours in the day...

Every night except Sundays.
If that happened, each member of our group would get to DM during the week.

Some great replies so far ladies and gentlemen. It sounds like we all have one thing in common....none of us game enough, haha.

2-3 times a week, I currently game twice a week, but it is divided between an 3.5 game on mondays and a 1e game on thursdays, I would prefer to beable to add 1 more day of one or the other game during the week (probably the 1e game, but would be happy to add it to the 3.5 game instead if the 1e players were unwilling.)

Every other Saturday from 1400-2000. This gives those of us with families the mornings to spend with them and allows us to get the necessary kitchen passes from our spousal units.

As kids, we would play on weekends and the game sessions would typically go for 12 hours and longer--only taking breaks when the pizza arrived. Now in a perfect world free of responsibility, i would love to play 3 times a week and DM/GM 3 days a week for 5-6 hour sessions, leaving one day off for recovery and to reminisce. Add this up and you will get 30-40 hours of week play time with one day off. Of course, the only way that this could happen is if i won the lottery or some rich relative i didnt even know existed leaves me everything. One can only hope. My 2 cents.

I had that perfect world once, as a player and as a GM. I lived in San Francisco and being a diverse player and GM I could run a Palladium Game once a week and then play once a week. Usually the games I ran were weekend games with small breaks of about an hour or two for every 5 hours of play....Ahhhh The good old days...That would never fly now.

Currently a perfect world would be to run one day for at least 8 hours and then play for 8 hours...I lean back with a smile at my dream fantasy :)
