Monk flaws

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

Everytime that I get a new Dragon mag in the mail I flip to the class articles to find the monk hoping that this was the month that flaws were done for the monk. Every month I am disappointed. Every other class has had an article about flaws done for them except monk. When will this be rectified?

Isn't just being a monk a big enough flaw? :P

Not every class got a flaw article (we only did seven), and not every class will. We've run all the flaw articles we're going to run for the foreseeable future.

Amen to that. I was getting a little tired of flaws.

I, for one, liked the Flaws articles. It gave the characters some roleplay flavor as well as a usable mechanic. Eric Mona wrote a while back that at least for the remainder of the year there were no more Flaw articles coming down the pike. I'd like to see more, covering the classes not yet included. Also, I'd like to see more racially based flaws, something for Eberron's new races (ducking the slings and arrows of the anti-campaign-specific readers) perhaps?

This is unfortunate as it appears, at the very least, an incompleted endeavor. One would think that if you were providing flaws for the majority of classes, that you could at least conclude the series on flaws by providing flaws for the remainder.

However, if Paizo is intent on not doing so, perhaps it could at least provide us, the subscribers, with a page blurb that explains how to draft our own game-balanced flaws - be they for classes, races, or general.

P.S. I guess traits are out of the question?

Are you kidding me!? No more flaws? I enjoy the flaws, and I was also wondering when I was going to see Monk flaws.

My players enjoy the flaws, too. They understand the flaws hurt their characters (badly too) and they wince taking one, but not only does it enhance their character's persona but also gives them that much needed bonus feat.

After all, with so many feats out there, my players are more than happy to compensate for receiving more feats to make the characters they want to cherish.

If you want guidelines on how to design flaws you should check page 91 of Unearthed Arcana (from Wizards of the Coast).

As for traits design, check page 89 of the same manual ;)

Yup. Oddly UA discourages Class based Flaws--so I've been surprised to see so many flaw articles based around the classes.

I would however like to see more Trait articles not necessarily in the class section. Maybe a Wormfood article similar to the Trait appendix in the SCAP HC, or some other type of article.

There's a good reason UA discourages the use of class-based flaws.

By multiclassing, a player can create builds that nullify the penalties imposed by flaws -- while keeping the bonus feat benefits intact.

This is the basic flaw with flaws, at least in the d20 system.
