New campaign starting: Advice needed Greyhawk + Freeport + Waterdeep ?

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

Hi, I am planning to start a Freeport campaign in the Greyhawk setting. Can anyone advise me of a good location for Freeport in Greyhawk? Also, I like the city of Waterdeep (and Undermountain, Underdark, etc.) and could use advice on how to shoehorn Waterdeep in Greyhawk as well.
Thanks,
Frank

For Freeport, I think the best location would be someplace along the coast of Wooly Bay. Ruined Fax or Elredd wouldn't be bad choices.

Waterdeep in Greyhawk is a tall order. I'm not sure how or where you could pull that one off. The flavor of the two settings are very different.

The Oljatt Sea might work. If you want it closer to the center of the map, you could also use Densac Gulf, or the Azure Sea.

If you have the Shackled City AP issues of DUNGEON, you'll notice that they suggest using Waterdeep in leiu of the Free City if you're playing in the Forgotten Realms. The converse might also work for you. Waterdeep could be plopped down where The Free City is.

Frog God Games

If you want to go global you can put the Flanaess (Greyhawk) on one side of the Solnar Ocean and Faerun (Forgotten Realms) on the opposite. Freeport simply plops down in between menacing the trade lanes between them with her pirates.

Seems like if you change the name and governmental structure around a bit, you can use a lot of the Waterdeep material (maps, NPCs, etc) in Rel Astra.

Ep Healy had a good suggestion here, I personally don't have access to the older Greyhawk material and am also considering using the Waterdeep material as filler for Greyhawk the City. You may notice in the last few issues of Dungeon that the publishers freely suggest you can call the "Free City" in the Age of Worms AP either Waterdeep or the City of Greyhawk. That says to me that there really isn't a big difference between the two.
"A really big city, with thousands of citizens and exotic travelers from afar. Practically right next door is a dungeon with tons of levels that just goes down and down and down..."

Which city did I just describe? Waterdeep, or Greyhawk? :-)

I believe that would be Greyhawk, since Undermountain is right below Waterdeep, and you didn't mention the best part of Waterdeep, Skullport.

Err... Forgot about that, damm, need to go back and look at some FR stuff soon, Aparently it's jumped ship from my brain and is making a break for the door! :-)

Seriously though, do you agree that the material is highly adaptable between the two? If not, feel free to discuss, I'm sure it can only help the original poster with thier decision on where to place the two city's. (Freeport and Waterdeep)

No, No. I completely agree. I just felt like pointing it out for a personal ego boost. The Realms are my setting of choice, so it'll always be Waterdeep for me, but yes, from what I know of Greyhawk, I believe they could switch out.
