Anywhere in Oerth, but where?

Shackled City Adventure Path

I make use of the Greyhawk setting. I would like to place the module in the Crystalmist mountains near Verbobonc and Celene. However this module needs mountains and forest together. Any ideas for an out of the way Greywhak setting that is geographically suitable?

Officially (from Dungeon # 110) Cauldron is in hex U1-77 of the Living Greyhawk map, descendants of abandoned Hold of the Sea Princes colonies but the Greyhawk map from Dungeon (the 4 parter) has moved this slighty further north. In this version Sasserine is a port city to the north of Cauldron on Jeklea Bay, and Cauldron lies about 40ish miles south inland, lying bewteen the Hellfurnances and the Amedio Jungle.

Edge of the Amedio Jungle is also where I was putting mine. There's even a little volcano on the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer map between hexes U1-78 and V1-77. The SCAP map does show jungle on both sides of Cauldron where the big map doesn't, but big maps are sometimes wrong on those little details.

Yeah. I'm putting together a campaign workbook for my players and the map situation is a little bit off. On page 26 of the SCHC, look at the map. Cauldron is at the middle, and the Lucky Monkey looks like it is about thirty miles away by the scale of it. The Lucky Monkey is supposed to be a roadhouse on the long road to Sasserine. But then when I open up my new Paizo map of WoGH, the cities of Cauldron and Sasserine are about half a hex away from each other, and a hex is supposed to be 30 miles.

I can't have Cauldron and Sasserine be 15 miles away from each other. It kind of strips the frontier aspect from Cauldron. I want to establish the kind of mood and tone that makes the PCs feel they are far from other cities and on their own in the wilderness of Oerth.

I don't know. I'm going to make a judgement call and say Cauldron and Sassering are about 60 miles away from each other. M'kay? And in that kind of terrain, it could take several days travel by foot.

How do you space Cauldron and Sasserine in your campaign? Input appreciated!

Here is what I have done.

I have placed Cauldron in the hex suggested in the letter page of Dungeon (see some posts above for the coordinates, it should be one of the volcano hexes on the WoG map).

I have placed Sasserine 200 miles to the south to southeast, where it could be on the coast to the southern ocean.

I have placed a tiny harbor town, called Lundby in the place where Sasserine was placed on the map. Here caravans to and from Cauldron are launched and loaded on ships or covered wagons.

The journey between Lundby and Cauldron takes nearly a week, the last stop being the Lucky Monkey, being also the base of operation of a lumbering operation for the mines beneath Cauldron (that's why it is so big). On the way I have placed "Thieves In The Temple" from Atlas Games to give the group some more XP prior entering Jzadirune. The terrain is mostly jungle (place at least one ape encounter on the journey to foreshadow the events in Flood Season).

This journey from Lundby to Cauldron gave the group(s) time to bond and some further elements of foreshadowing. (They encountered the caravan bringing Sarcem Delasharn to the port of Lundby on his way to his "secret mission", accompanying them is Alek Tercival, meeting Shensen in the Lucky Monkey, placing Skylar Krewis at the gate of Cauldron, bringing the new arrivals to the town guard, introducing them right away to Terseon Skellerang, Captain of the Guard, and so on...)

I was very happy about the first placement of Cauldron via the letter page, but very surprised to see Sasserine being placed now north and very near to Cauldron on the World of Greyhawk map. I think the crew wanted to include both towns on the map, but Sasserine being 200 miles south of the original place of Cauldron would have placed it well beyond the bounderies of the map. Thus the switcheroo.

If I will start another group in Cauldron, I will most definitely use the traits from the hardcover, those are really really good.

My game hasn't quite started yet, but I had just planned to put Sasserine on the coast north of Cauldron, which is only about a hex away, 65 miles on my big map from the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer. I think I'll move Cauldron another hex south though, just off the edge of the map, so Sasserine is 130ish miles away. That's as the crow flies of course, longer by road.
