When to introduce The Free City

Age of Worms Adventure Path

When is the assumed best time to introduce a trip to The Free City. Anyone know if a future AoW installment might require that the players must be rather unaquinted with the city or can trips or even adventures there between AoW installments be done without conflicting with the main plot. As a DM I would just modify everything to make it fit regardless but wouldnt wanna spoil any mood a AoW installment regarding the city would try to convey. I havn't read "Three faces of Evil" of yet so I'm not sure how that ends and seques into Pt. 3.

any ideas or advice?

Dark Archive

The authors did mention, that the plot will be taken to the free city sometimes mid-level (if i remeber correctly). There's been a hint to this, too, in the NPC-description of the rival adventureres (on pg.50, Dungeon #124).
It says, that the pc's will do battle in the arena of the free city.
I, for myself, don't plan on bringing the pc's to the free city before it is planned in the AP, 'cause i don't want to ruin the pace of the story for my group.
I was very glad with the highly atmospheric connection of the several parts of 'The Whispering Cairn' and i believe in the authors that the first trip to the free city will be something remarkable.
Maybe additional side-treks could spoil the intensity of the full AP-experience.
And if the future installments of the AP are as large as 'The Whispering Cairn' (which took my current group a few six-to-nine-hour evenings of concentraded game play to resolve) i don't see many needs in incorporating additional quests.

The adventure path is scheduled to take the PCs to the Free City in part 4. It assumes that this is the first trip by the PCs into the Big City, but the majority of the adventure works fine if the PCs are already passingly familiar with the city by the time they get there.

Whispering Cairn was a behemoth. The next two installments are shorter, but it's looking like part 4 is gonna be another super-sized adventure.

Scarab Sages

I've dropped hints of the Free City right from the start.

Auric boasting about his title, Allustan being trained there, Filge and Smenk meeting there...

I also had Allustan tell the PCs not to flash their treasure round town, or the money they might gain from it. Therefore, he offered to act as their agent, and sell it for them, to buy them items they needed. Since they were worried about their claim being jumped if they went out of town, they agreed, and he told them of his contact, Eligos.

This makes it easier to link later scenarios, if they already heard the name, and have a reason to trust him, since he procured the cure and lesser vigor wands, they've been burning through at both ends!
