I must admit that i am new to this whole message board thing but i am in desperate need of advice. my group was once at a max of about 3 1/2 people (one person i saw about once a month so they are a 1/2)(this is also including myself). now the one person has left and i was able to pick up someone new but the 1/2 of a person became mroe of a 1/4 of a person (if i lost ya sry)so now im at 2 1/4 people including myself. So as one can imagine a dm playing an arcane spell caster and a pc fighter dont work very well. despite all of my searchign i cant find ANYONE else who plays or has any desire to learn. does anyone have any suggestions on how i can find some players? also does anyone know if there is a way to make an online game work? hmmm well i guess thats it sry if i lost you above.

I'm new to RPOl.net, but, from what I've seen, there are places where games work very well. There is some player turn-over; however, more often than not, someone is there to fill the missing space. I, too, would love to get a game going where I live, but there don't seem to be too many players in Columbia, South Carolina.

I play online using AOL instant messenger. My friends and I log on at the same time and start a chat room, and I DM for 4 hours or so. AIM chat rooms have a built in dicebot which makes it easy, and I put up battlemaps online for combats. Since I move every 6 months or so it's an awesome way for me to keep in touch with my friends.

I've seen some people have success using social muds and running a game online that way... if the GM is also a programmer on the mud, programs are easy to develop for rolling dice and the other game mechanic portions. The good ones I've seen used MUCK or MOO code, though certainly there are other social mud options out there.

I play online at Shadowrealms ( www.shadowrealms.hyperboards.com ). It's a very nice play by message board community, with lots of friendly folks. Very few power gamers or rules lawyers (my pet peeve as I'm the most Chaotic of CGs). It offers a decent range of games in mostly 2nd or 3/3.5 editions. That said, it suffers from the same thing that most online sites suffer from...sometimes real life just gets in the way and the game lags up (just as at every other non-table top site I've seen). When they are running smoothly, pbMessage Board is a great gaming outlet!
--In the intrests of full disclosure, I was recently made an administrator at Shadowrealms. Since this was the topic of the thread, I'm assuming this wasn't too much of an advertisement...
