Charles,
Have you had a look at any of Marvel's Ultimate titles?
-Vic.
.
Vic,
Good suggestion. I've looked at Ultimate Avengers (I think it was Avengers anyway) and in one issue Cap decks Bruce Banner for coming on too strong to a woman (at least I think that was the gist of it, it's been a couple months). I liked the tough style but not enough to buy.
A new Spider-Man title recently started up and I thought about that one too, but didn't go for it. It just seemed too much like what I'd collected before.
If New Avengers really does star Cap, Iron Man, Spiderman, and Wolverine regularly (not just as a gimmicky first issue)it will be different than anything I've collected before. So I may get hooked.

I haven't collected Marvel comics since the '80s. But putting Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine, and Spiderman on one team might just get me to spend $2.50 on a comic book.
I saw the poster for the new Avengers team yesterday and I am not so sure about Spiderman being an Avenger. I know he has been a reserved member for a while but he is more of an individual super-hero.
Now Bendis has been writting some good stuff with the Ultimate Spiderman so maybe he can fit him into the Avergers team.

I double checked what I'd found online. I went to this site:
http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/forums/printthread.php?t=29929and read this about New Avengers (due out in Nov):
"New Avengers" Part 1 (Of 5)
After the devastating destruction of the original Avengers just what sort of threat to the world could persuade Captain America to assemble an all-new team? And after the events of AVENGERS DISASSEMBLED, who could possibly be on this team? How does Cap, Iron Man, Spider-Man & Wolverine sound? Get ready for the first of a proposed 500-issue run that signals an all-new era, as Bendis & Finch join with you, the fervent faithful, for the launch of the all-new ongoing Avengers series!
The poster at that site shows Spider-Man (and Wolverine) with Cap and Iron man. However, the first story arc is 5 issues, so maybe the line up will change after that. I hope not.

A little more official, New Avengers out at 11-24-04, from www.marvel.com:
THE STORY: "THE RAFT" PART 1 (OF 5)
After the devastating destruction of the original Avenger’s just what sort of threat to the world could persuade Captain America to assemble an all new team? And after the events of AVENGERS DISASSEMBLED, who could possibly be on this team? The answer to the biggest secret in comics is only found right here. Get ready for the first of a proposed 500-issue run that signals an all-new era, as Bendis & Finch join with you, the fervent faithful, for the launch of the all-new ongoing Avengers series!
The art is the same. Cap, Iron Man, Wolverine, Spider-Man, what looks like Spider-Woman and two others I can't see real well.

I think Bendis is probably the best writer working on regular comics series today. My pull list at the comic shop includes anything written by Bendis (except for Powers, which I hold off on until they're collected).

O.K., well that last post was way back in September, and it's now mid-November.
I buy trade paperbacks anymore.
I'm really hoping the "Avengers Disassembled" arc hits the trades soon.
I just snagged the Marvel Knights Spider-Man trade, collecting the first 4 issues of that series. It starts rocking right off the bat.
And it actually has a feeling of hope in its grittiness.
That Spidey, even when beaten down, can do the right thing and suffer through it and come out on top. (Unlike Millar's run on The Authority and the "down" feel of Ultimates. I like grittiness, as long as I don't end up with the feeling that "it's such an oppressive world out there, and human nature being what it is things will never get better."
Know what I mean?
I love that it seems like Marvel is not only doing more intense "thillers", but that they are weaning off of the "magic" crutch and going more sci-fi spliced with "ripped from the headlines" twists.
Bendis with The Pulse and Daredevil. Millar with Ultimates and now Spidey. JMS on Spidey. Now Brubaker of "Gotham Central" will be doing Captain America!
Ahhhh, yeeessss...
It just can't hit the trades soon enough!

Putting Wolverine and Spiderman on the Avengers is a pathetic money grab. Are there not enough books with Wolverine? At least when Hulk, Ghost Rider, Spidey and Wolverine "were" the Fantastic Four it was merely a two-issue joke.
"Hollywood" Marvel continues to disappoint. Moves like pulling out of ComicCon, and suing City of Heroes make their top brass appear to be braying jackasses. They are doing a real disservice to the comic community.
Buy DC comics instead! Oh wait, that's Warner Brothers. . .

Ok so let me get this straight.... who exactly is in the line up? i've seen the artwork ... spider-woman, spider-man, Cap, ironman, luke cage, wolverine ... but who are the other two guys? guy with the cape nad the guy with the kosh?
Well, one guy is supposed to be The Sentry. From that MK mini-series they did a while back.
I've mixed feelings about the Sentry. I mean, the whole zoroastrian twist (he's apparently in constant battle with his darkside/"evil twin") combined with the Superman-level powers and, well,.... Marvel doesn't really need another "Superman" like character. They haven't done too much with the ones they already have. (Hyperion, Captain Marvel, Gladiator.)
I'm a huge Spidey fan. I don't mind him on the team, as long as it's not for long.
But, Wolverine. *sigh* I am pretty tired of him myself. I've just never understood his popularity. And he's friggin' EVERYWHERE. For him, I agree with Hunter, that it's just a blatant way to guarantee some sort of sales for the title.
Still, I hope it all produces a good read.

I am a big Wolverine fan, but I am not too fond of him being an Avenger. I am digging Wolverine's current solo book. That storyline by Millar has me hooked.
As for my beloved Avengers there are a few things I can't understand with the current line up. On Sentry I agree with the comments about him. I don't know much about him.Why oh why is Spider-woman the only female on board ? That is just wrong.
Spider-man is in enough books of his own. I would rather see a character who doesn't have his or her own book in the Avengeres. I realize that they are trying to drum up sales by sticking Spidey and Wolverine in the team, but I don't agree with it story-wise.
Not a fan of Luke Cage so I could do without him.
Cap and Iron Man I dig. They ARE the Avengers to me.

It's actually not too bad. I was never really into the original Avengers books. Felt too Disney. I know they're Marvels version of the JLA but even Supes now doesn't sound like a boyscout from the 1950s. About the line-up:
Cap, and Iron Man - you can't go wrong with these to because you don't have Avengers unless their on the roster.
Wolverine - I love Wolvie but he is in way too many X-books as it is has no one at Marvel ever heard of over saturation. I know the Avengers hasn't been a great selling boo and they need to get something going to get people to buy. But I seriously hope they have Wolvie only long enough to be a credible member and not as publicity stunt and then move on.
Luke Cage - Decent enough character with a long history, better than Rage kid. Obviously an ethnic diverisity on the team roster thing but hopefully done right without all the stereo-type persaonlity.
Spider-Woman - Could be worse could be Electra, could be better could be Black Widow (the original one). Jury still out.
Spider-Man - Same as Wolverine. At least hanging with Cap will make both of them seem more respectable in the public eye.
Ronin - Could be the perfect thing to make Daredevil a viable character again. Of course having Cap and Wolvie on the team already they have all the combat oriented people they'll need. Of course if they do the right thing and have Wolvie leave then his combat skill and heightened senses will not be overlooked.
Sentry - OK the group needs a powerhouse until Thor returns and evidently this guy could fill the bill, But why so much yellow?!? Of course they could of gotten someone who already existed instead of creating this guy. My real pet peeve though is that he'll be the reason/foil/excuse to rewrite all of Marvel's history/continuity because evidently he's existed for years but no one remembers him. Hate that crap. Watch a few years for now we'll find out he was the reason why the Fantastic Four were first able to beat Galactus. Believe it.
Marvel needs the Avenger, they need something to put up against the JLA. So far with the exception of the whole Sentry thing the writing is pretty good.

I just read somewthing.. It's Daredevil hiding his identity.. LAME!
I thought it was really Echo. Marvel has set two laws: 1. everybody who dies doesn't stay dead. 2.And its always a clone or lookalike who bites it,the hero was sleeping in cryo or something, such as Colossus triviliazing a sacrifice (his own life)to cure a lethal diaease like Legacy by using said two laws. It's like reading the A-Team where they empty tons of bullets and bombs on the enemy and nobody ever gets killed.

Having read the first Trade I gotta say I love this book. Between the comedy stylings of Spider-Man and Power Man. The mystery that is Sentry (I like the lost character scenario), the old school buddy movie that is Cap and Iron Man and the awesomeness that is Spider-Woman this comic book is #1 on my list. Followed closely by Ultimate Spider-Man and Invincible. I don't particularly like Wolverine on the team, but then again can a team really be made without Wolverine on it?

If thats the case then Marvel might as well as ditch the 90% of their monthly titles that doesnt have Wolvie.

ok; so what are the teams of supers now that Thor #3 is out; who are Iron Man's allies and who else is around; I only read Thor atm so could use a little context. Who are the Avengers now?
At the moment* it lines up as:
New Avengers: Luke Cage, Spidey in the black costume, Iron Fist, Wolverine, Hawkeye (just back from missing Civil War after being ressurected, and he is running around in a different costume sans bow at the moment. And if anyone is more pissed about missing Civil War and Cap being assasinated under Facist Tony's watch than Thor, its Clint Barton) & Doctor Strange. Spider-Woman just left the team as well.
Registration Avengers: Iron Man, Ares (Yep, they got the Greek God of War. I guess the Thor clones didn't quite cut it.) Sentry, Ms Marvel, Black Widow, Wasp.
*Its hard to line up the timelines, since Marvel is having some continuity/timeline problems. But those were the lineups roughly right before the big Hulk event, even though the comics were published months apart ;-)
