Egad! I wondered what had motivated that assault upon my nice barskin tent!

Indeed them bars make fer some good tents, boy howdy, but them tents are mighty lackin' in facilities. The TP was only to be nice, I took no pleasure from the act of dancing around under the full moon wearing nothing but a gimp mask singing praises to Jarlsberg while chucking around the ultra absorbant.

No way, boy howdy!

You are very unnerving.

I'm glad I'm in this guild.

Heh :-)

Gathering stuff for an assault on the Naughty Sorceress, I think. Tho I may try to get a few more trophies and tattoos before I make the attempt...

Holy crap that's a cool new cover!

Just on the blog! Check it here

Heck yes!

That's just...wow. I like it. A LOT.

I don't know if it was broadcast here in the US, to be honest...

And I believe, but am not 100% sure, that they had to negotiate something to include it on the DVD set. Again, not 100% sure. I'm sure one of the posters here who frequents the (former?) OG forum could say....I used to post there but haven't been there since the middle/end of Series 2.

I don't know that they can do Time Crash...that was sort of specially commissioned by Children in Need, and there may be clearance issues. They (the BBC) can't make anything off Time Crash, because it was for charity.

Likely it'll either have 10 minutes cut from it (that's my guess), or they'll find something else to pad out the slot when it airs...like 19 minutes of promos for their latest made for TV movie about giant crocodiles or something...

Today is a French day for some reason:

Magma - Inedits
Ange - Au Dela du Deliere
Morglbl/Morglbl Trio - a selection of songs downloaded from their website to familiarise myself with them...

Christmas Special is right around the corner, and today the BBC announced it's gonna be 71 minutes long, not 60.

And extra 11 minutes of Whovian goodness.

Hoopla!

Quite welcome! I was surprised to see a 1E-ish question, and happy I could assist!

Hey everyone...

A new Zone opened tonight. Adventure in the Obligatory Pirate Cove in Swashbuckling Garb to find it...

Given what you know so far, are you planning to:

A) Convert! I am ready for a new D&D.

B) 3.5 or Bust! I'm sticking with the man what brought me.

C) We'll see. Need more information.

D) Other.

Please pick one. Feel free to elaborate, but please stick to one reply each for this thread. I'm not interested in fights or refutations of incorrect points or baiting or whatever.

I want to know how you, at this moment in time, feel about the idea of converting to a new edition of the game.

I expect that people's answers will change over time. This is not the last time I will ask this question, so we'll have a chance to gauge the issue as we go along.

So, given what you know so far, you plan to: _______________.

d: Other. My players have gamed with me since the early-mid 1990's. Most of us started out with 1E or 2E AD&D. I never bought a single 3E/3.5E D&D book (though I am asking for Greyhawk and the Demonweb Pits hardcovers just for info purposes). I have continued to run a heavily house ruled 1E/2E mix. And I'll likely be continuing to do so. It's what my players have asked for, and it is what I enjoy.

Yeah, it's a very late reply, but it's mine.

DICE RACING: Use a checkerboard. 4 players max place their tokens on alternate rows. Object is to move token to the end of the board, sideways one, and then back on adjacent row to the first row. A d6 determines movement of spaces per turn. Wagers made prior to commencement of game.

IN BETWEEN: Roll 3d20, 2 white and 1 of a different colour. Player must roll between the 2 white dice with the coloured die. Equaling a number is a loss. If 2 white dice equal each other, the loss is automatic. Odds are always 5-2 before dice are cast. A crooked house might paint 11 sides of a die black and only 9 red.

That's all the gambling games in the DMG appendix.

Hope this helps! I love my 1E DMG.

Zowie slot variant: 3d8 1 roll only, wager made prior to roll. Table below weighted toward house, DM may of course devise own table:

1 LEMON
2 ORANGE
3 BAR
4 BELL
5 PLUM
6 CHERRIES
7 ANCHOR
8 CROWN

6-6-1 PAYS 2-1
6-6-2 PAYS 4-1
6-6-3 PAYS 6-1
6-6-4 PAYS 8-1
6-6-5 PAYS 10-1
6-6-7 PAYS 12-1
6-6-8 PAYS 15-1
1-1-1 PAYS 8-1
2-2-2 PAYS 12-1
3-3-3 PAYS 14-1
4-4-4 PAYS 16-1
5-5-5 PAYS 20-1
6-6-6 PAYS 24-1
7-7-7 PAYS 50-1 (JACKPOT)
8-8-8 PAYS 100-1 (ZOWIE JACKPOT)

Dice games part deux:

Slot variant: 3d6 1 roll only, wager made prior to roll. Table below weighted toward house, DM may of course devise own table:

1 LEMON
2 ORANGE
3 BAR
4 BELL
5 PLUM
6 CHERRIES

6-6-1 pays 2-1
6-6-2 pays 3-1
6-6-3 pays 4-1
6-6-4 pays 5-1
6-6-5 pays 6-1
1-1-1 pays 4-1
2-2-2 pays 8-1
3-3-3 pays 10-1
4-4-4 pays 12-1
5-5-5 pays 24-1 (little jackpot)
6-6-6 pays 36-1 (big jackpot)

Card games now:

Twenty-One: a 52 card deck is used, each player betting against the house (DM). 2 cards dealt to each player and dealer. Players in turn elect to take add'l cards up to a total og 5. Over 21 automatically loses, hands of 5 cards under 22 auto win double wager (exception: dealer). Ties go to house. Aces count 1 or 11, called at beginning of turn. Face cards count 10, numbered cards as marked. Dealer must take hit under 17, cannot take card on 17 or higher (not per Hoyle). Dealer gets cards last, bets made after 1st 2 cards dealt. If player has a natural pair he may double down, asking for 2 additional cards, betting on both as separate hands. House always retains the deal.

High-Low: Each player gets 2 cards face down. Prior to dealing, some stake placed in pot. After looking at cards, each player turns 1 up and the player with highest up bets (3 raise limit suggested). Each player has option to change his or her up card for a fresh one from the deck. This takes place 3 times going round the table, with betting interval between rounds. 2 is low, ace is high. Object is to have highest hand (a pair on down) to a 2-3 (lowest possible hand, followed by 2-4, 3-4, 2-5, 3-5, 4-5, 2-6, 3-6, 4-6, 5-6, 2-7 and so on). High and low hands split the pot evenly, odd money going to high.

Other gambling games can be devised on principles of colours, shapes, position or whatever.

More dice games to follow.

Page 215, 1E DMG with the Efreeti cover:

Craps: shooter wins on first roll of 7 or 11, loses 2, 3, 12. Otherwise shooter rolls untilt he first number rolled is rolled a second time - a win - or a 7 is rolled - a loss. Shooters bet before rolling Side bets made as applicable

Horse: 1st roller determined by whatever means desired. 5d6 used, 6 high, 1 low. Lowest to highest hands are: pair, 2 pair, 3 of a kind, straight (1-5 or 2-6), full house (triplet and pair), 4 of a kind, 5 of a kind. 1st roller may roll once or twice. If only once, all other players may only roll once to beat him/her. If 2 rolls, player may retain none, 1, 2, 3, or 4 of the dice. Winner becomes the boss.

Knucklebones: Craps type game, object is to score highest total. Variant allows a second roll by the first shooter, retaining none or one of them. If so, then all other players may do the same. Winner rolls first.

More to follow.

I've downloaded the main rules set, with is somewhat less important to me because I still have all my old 1E hardcovers, though it is a welcome addition to my digital reference library. But is there anyone out there who has any of the OSRIC modules or whatever who can give me some info on what the product is like? I'm still running a bastardised 1E/2E campaign (because it's what my players crave) and am looking for more modules and material I can use/manipulate/adjust/rework/whatever in my campaign.

Thanks in advance!

It's a shame too...because I'd love to get something like this.

C'est la vie...

It'll make house rules a heck of an interesting thing, that's for sure...playing at 70...

Yeah, I hope I will be.

On my WIndows98 machine, I use WinZip. It's shareware, but you can continue to use the product beyond the evaluation period without it becoming feature limited. It's a good program though, and well worth paying for.

On my XP machine, I use WinRAR, and love it. This one I paid for and don't regret at all.

Your choice, but consider this a vote for both programs as easy to use and worthy of consideration.

Level 15, just finished the quest for the Holy MacGuffin.

I'm just grinding levels right now...I have the Mysterious Island of Mystery War to start, and then the NS quest, and then ascension. I'm trying to figure out what to do with the app. 150,000 meat I'm holding in my closet.

Oh, and earning trophies...3 so far, with 2 more on the horizon.

Fun times!

You know the amazing thing about NJ?

It's such a tiny state...it really is. Yet two people can live in it and still be an hour or more away.

Yes, we're in NJ...but I'm almost an hour away from Rockaway.

I'm not sure if they still do, but Milford NJ used to celebrate it. DOn't ask me why, outside of them having a "British" style brew pub in town.

Then again, in Frenchtown NJ (where I live) we celebrate Bastille day every year.

What am I going to be on Halloween?

Working.

Alas, likewise here.

Not that we get many trick or treaters out our way.

At least when I get home I will be able to lay claim to all my daughter's peanut butter cups as a sort of consolation prize (she doesn't like them very much)...

WalMart also is carrying it...I know this because we ran into a stack of copies (not literally) after going there to buy back to school stuff for our daughter after being essentially chased out of Staples for reasons as yet unknown.

It's awfully standard for people to pick Tom Baker as their favourite...of course, he played the role the longest, and here in the US, he's likely the best known (and for many, there was no other Doctor). That said, the first Doctor Who serial I ever saw was a Sylvester McCoy one, and I like his portrayal (especially as they seriously darkened his character in the final season) a good bit.

After him...oh, tough this. Honestly I'd say either Patrick Troughton (just got the 8-parter The Invasion a week or two ago, with the two animated recons for the missing two parts, and it's brilliant) or Jon Pertwee. Something about the shift from cosmic hobo to crusty aristocrat was very cool for me.

Hmm...

Romana I (Mary Tamm)
Ace (Sophie Aldred)
Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen)
Victoria Waterfield (Deborah Watling)
Jamie McCrimmon (Frazer Hines)
Liz Shaw (Caroline Johns)...especially in Inferno, in her alt-universe role...
Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton (Jacqueline Hill and William Russell)...can't have 1 without the other...

'Tis almost more interesting to read the discussion pages behind the actual article, what with all the byzantine machinations run through in order for the article to achieve its featured status.

Frenchtown NJ...a small town on the Delaware River, north of Trenton, and which has been flooded three times in the past three years...

Well, I mostly have been lurking here for the past 2 months or so as the campaign I was running took a long vacation due to members involved in SCA and RealLife (tm), but as things are gearing back up, I'm back on and stuff.

In any event...

I, too, am on LJ, and as I can't yet figure out how to do the embedded link here, here's where mine is:

Feel free to add...

S&A is still growing on me. The first 2 or 3 listens left me feeling decidedly "meh," but as time goes on and I grow more acquainted with the material, I find myself warming up to it slightly. I like it better than Vapor Trails by far though...

Just finished watching last week's "The Lazarus Experiment."

I must admit, for an episode I was particularly dreading, this went over rather well. I was horridly put off by the return to Earth in S1 with Rose, and the sudden change in dynamic of the show, but this episode went over rather well. This season continues to feel dark for me, and that's a good thing, as for me the show was at its best when it was darker.

Very curious and intrigued about this week's "42."

Just 1E/2E/3-3.5E AD&D:

108 books.

Wow, a Doctor Who thread here. WIll wonders never cease!

I have yet to watch this past week's episode (The Lazarus Experiment), tho I have seen the five previous ones. Series 3 has been darker and more dialed back than last year's series, which was one of the weakest ones in my opinion.

Really glad to see Tennant being a bit more restrained in general and not as panto.

I've been wondering how to do that...thank you!

I've never really worried about upkeep type situations; if it looks like my players will be residing in an area for an extended period of time (e.g., they've now been in Hommlet (T1-4) for around 2 calendar months), I find ways for them to earn their keep without having to worry about "OK, time to re-up your room rental for another week, that'll be..." and so on.

While it may create an air of entitlement in the short term, I think it'll develop into creating some interesting role playing situations in the future.

Having said all of this, had I realised that there'd be a 1 month layoff in gaming, I'd have come up with something to lighten their purses somewhat...just to maybe motivate things.

Oh well...20 years on and still learning...

In fact they will be posted in both versions of the rules, so everyone wins without having to resort to converting. I write these in 1E AD&D.

We should be on target to post the link by the 7th (8th at the latest I assume), and it will be posted on all major boards and Maure Castle fan-oriented sites (Canon Fire, DF, WotC, etc) and wherever else we can think of posting it.

Stay tuned. Maure Castle is not dead! And Long live Paizo who made it happen!

But but but...does that mean there won't be any posting of the material in 1E rules?

As someone still running a campaign based on 1E rules (for the most part), it'd thrill me to no end to see new material in that format...

Real Honest to goodness Epic support. This might come just in time for the greyhawk game I'm in.

My daughter, who is 16 and thus does not have any recollection of the so-called golden era of (A)D&D, is absolutely terrified by the thought of going there...all becauce of the illustration on the 1E DMG. To wit:

"Nuh-huh! I am NOT going to any city surrounded by a burning sea of oil. Forget it!"

Heh. Heh. Heh.

:-)

Talking about this thread around the table as we played, my wife and our friend (the only current other long term gamer I'm running the current campaign for) both agreed with the Mud Sorcerer's Tomb. I believe we even used it as a jumping off point to toss the characters for a session or two into Melnibone to meet with a certain weak drugged albino worshiper of Arioch...

34 years old.
Picked up the basic D&D box (orange box w/ the blue dice) when I was 10 years old at a church rummage sale for $2.00).
Parents bought me 1E PH, DMG, MM and MM2 for Christmas that year.
Started DM-ing right out of the box, because no one else wanted to.
Upgraded (grudgingly) to 2E when it came out.
Fave settings are Gteyhawk (preferably 1E Greyhawk, rather than the Greyhawk Wars era) and Ravenloft (preferably pre-Grand Conjunction).
Pretty much never had a PC.
Very much understand THAC0, and find it a fine mechanic.
Still personally prefer 1E and 2E.
Am trying to coerce one of my players to run a 1E Monk.

I'm insane, I know :o)
