Giant Friendly Talking Spider
@Jin: Yep, that's the one. I had a lot of fun with the Exile/Avernum series and when I remembered that I had a spider avatar that wasn't being used for anything I couldn't resist. They've recently remade it with a modernized engine and added a bunch of content, if you feel like playing it again some time: Avernum: Escape from the Pit.
Giant Friendly Talking Spider
"Me? A mutant? You're silly! Silly... but also a little scary. I already offered to taste anyone who we think is a mutant. Spiders have very good taste!" The spider squares off with the angry Xzyst, "My clutchmates told me about you soulsuckers! You're worse than a mutant, you just want me dead so you can eat my soul! You should eat flies instead... I think they must be much better than souls." A thought suddenly occurs to her- Oooh! You could eat fly souls! I'm sure they'd be really, really, really yummy! I'll catch some for you after I taste you to make sure you're not the mutant!" Tia votes for Eldon
Giant Friendly Talking Spider
Quote: "Isn't it good to have The Extermination Squad here, they will ensure that none of us normal people are harmed." "We can do that? That's awesome! We are the ones who took care of that tribble infestation last cycle- I still can't believe how many I ate. Oooh! What kind of vermin do mutants taste like- do they taste like flies? I can totally figure out who it is just by tasting them!" Tia's fangs glisten with caustic venom, and she is practically vibrating with excitement at the prospect as her multifaceted eyes take in the tableau of beings sharing the shelter with her.
Giant Friendly Talking Spider
After having quite a hunt and skittering all along the walls and ceiling in pursuit of her prey, Tia finally catches the last fly. She joins her friend Meowselsworth near the little jumpy fellow and listens to the conversation. She's faintly disappointed that they're talking about something called 'corn' instead of flies. She stays utterly still as she listen's to the cricket's drawl, and with no external movement aside from the occasional faint quivering of the book lung on her abdomen it is easy to assume that she isn't paying attention. In fact, she is riveted. After hearing Sir Jimmy wax eloquent about the food's many virtues she decides to give it a try. As Jimmy turns away Tia exclaims "Oooooh! I can't wait to have my first meal of corn!" The spider lunges past him to the pile of corn and in a lightning-quick strike impales several cobs on each fang. The food hisses and bubbles as her powerful poison begins digesting and liquifying the corn and after a moment she pops it into her waiting maw. After a few enthusiastic crunches she pauses her mastication. She begins to twitch, and frantically brushes at her mouth with her palpae until a puddle of half-digested corn spills out and lies steaming on the floor. "Ummmmm... Sir Jimmy, I don't think I like corn. Have you tried flies? They're much better. You should totally try a fly. I could catch one for you!"
Giant Friendly Talking Spider
Quote: "Flies, is it?!! Interesting, do they taste crunchy with a gooey centre? ♥" "Oh yes! So much nicer than the rats or tribbles, flies are the best!" The spider skitters off to one of its impromptu webs and snatches out one of the struggling insects, then wraps it in silk and presents the struggling bundle to Sutra with its two front limbs. "Here! Try one!" The spider waits with its proffered gift, eager to share and make friends. "You look nice. My name is Tia, but everyone calls me Spider. What's your name?"
Giant Friendly Talking Spider
The disconcertingly large spider skitters up to the dispensary. The light from the scanning beam reflects in its numerous large eyes then abruptly ceases- several large buzzing things the size of a human hand zip away from the dispensary. Flies?! Flies!!! "Guys, this thing makes flies! You should totally have some flies, they're delicious!" The voice that emerges from the spider is comically high-pitched and absurdly enthusiastic. It proceeds to climb to the corners of the room and hastily set up a few webs as it stalks its dinner.
For a moment after reading the blurb about the reactor, I thought this was going to be about alpha complex and hunting down the commie mutants. ::sigh:: Name: Tia
@Bruce: I lol'd at the Werewolf reference :)

Tia's hold on her human form is disrupted as the strange energies ripple over her, and at the same time a small female devil wielding a spear and clad in leather pops into visibility. The comet's impact knocks her from her feet (all 8 of them!), and she scrambles to right herself. Confronted by this paragon of light, her normally nimble mind scrambles for options. All she can think of is to buy time- engage the 'serf of the heavens' in conversation while the other agents if hell make their preparations. Unsure of the extent of this being's perceptions, she is careful to limit herself to speaking the technical truth. She tentatively skitters into the church and addresses the angel in celestial, speaking in a cheery high-pitched voice "Hello there! I think that we were sent to free you... much time has passed and creation is not as it was; many records have been lost. Why were you bound in ages past?" Actions & Rolls:

The spidery shape ripples and blurs as it shifts itself into the form of a young woman. She wears a voluminous grey-blue traveler's cloak that hides most of her figure, revealing only her pale face, black hair, and green eyes. She falls into place next to Zadlu as he approaches the door.

Quote: I'm hoping that Ssrintal posts soon, I'd hate to lose one of our only Abyssal representatives. That, and the fact that we could just point Ssrintal toward the temple and he'd tear the whole mountain down single-handedly. I think we need to make sure he gets dibs on the first adamantine weapon we come across... Quote: What are everyone's thoughts/speculations/positive or negative feedback thus far? I know it's still early in the game but I'd like to see what everyone's reactions are so far. It was a solid introduction, it got us all on the same track with the knowledge that we were on a direct mission from our patron and had an immediate reason to work with the things that showed up with us. There's not much to comment on yet, but I'm looking forward to finding out what you have waiting for us!
Giant Friendly Talking Spider
For Tia it was to figure out what Zadlu was. I don't think it was strictly necessary, my bonus is high enough to take a 10 and identify outsiders up to CR 13. I believe knowledge (arcana) DC15 is the relevant skill to know what an aranea is. The spider rubs its fangs together and says "Oh yes, I am very good at asking questions. Tell me imp, what can be seen through that window? Shall we enter through there, or the door? I doubt we have time for a siege, or the leverage to make the defenders of the fortress come out here to fight us." Now that the disorientation from the abrupt travel was beginning to fade, Tia started to wonder whether they had been observed. She carefully examines the cliff faces above for any sign of a guard or watchpost.
Giant Friendly Talking Spider
"Yes, daemon, the weaving calls to me. It is in my blood; I could no more ignore its call than than I could refuse to draw breath." She mutters a few arcane words and studies Zadlu for several seconds before turning her attention to the stronghold looming over them. Tia - Knowledge (planes) 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23
@Zadlu: You still have placeholders listed for your gear and feats... @GM: Are there any magical auras around the temple? Aside from the front door how many entrances are visible?
Giant Friendly Talking Spider
@GM: OK. I like the core concept of taking a 20 on dispel checks with a much longer casting time but I can see how I got a little carried away with the 'feature creep'. I'll keep it in the back of my mind and see if a more balanced application for the idea jumps out at me. Quote: (Female Lyrakien Half-Fiend Monk(Martial Artist+)/1 - Cleric(Crusader)/3) I think that is the longest bit of race/class text that I have seen yet, on an actual character. If my post looks a little weird, the 2nd person/passive voice was just for the introductory description... sort of a monster manual entry for her. I'll be using standard 3rd person narrative style for my regular posts. EDIT: I just noticed that I somehow forgot to buy a rank in use magic device. I moved a rank from acrobatics into UMD, just wanted to let you know and make sure you are OK with it.

A large brownish spider, somewhat larger than the average man, skitters back from the other creatures present. In addition to the usual complement of entirely-too-many eyes and legs, this spider possesses spindly insect-like hands which wave in complement to the arcane syllables coming from its mouth. Giving lie to your initial impression of a bestial nature it wears an odd garment that offers several buckles and straps to secure assorted pouches and cases to its back then wraps around to cover its underbelly. It also carries a small shield made of gleaming mithral; its only visible weapon is a crossbow strapped to its side. Its spell produces no obvious effect, and the spider doesn't do anything that could be considered hostile. It just waits and watches the others, its eight beady black eyes gleaming in the sun. Spellcraft DC16:
Tia casts mage armor Detect Magic:
There is an aura of moderate illusion next to and slightly in front of the spider. The spider itself is under the influence of a spell with an aura of mild abjuration. Its garment and shield radiate faint abjuration, and the quiver on its back radiates moderate conjuration. A jumble of faint auras containing divination, transmutation, abjuration, and evocation radiate from a scrollcase at its side. Detect good/evil/law/chaos:
Tia has an aura of faint law. There is a distinct aura of strong law and evil near her. See invisible:
There is another spider with similar coloration standing next to and slightly in front of the large one. It is much smaller, 'only' the size of a wolf. Knowledge (Religion): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11

Hmm. Epic? The idea behind the 1-hour casting time was to remove a lot of the tactical versatility and utility of dispel magic or mage's disjunction. It could definitely work with an expensive focus, if that would help to balance it. The reason I didn't go with an expensive material component or focus for the legend lore feature is that you are effectively 'paying' with the destruction of a magic item... I was thinking that if a mage could sit down for a minute or two and spam dispel magic, they could take an hour to do it right. I have rarely seen dispel magic used in a way that 'taking a 20' would break it if it required a 1 hour casting time. The only example that comes to mind is using it to remove a curse, and if that would be game-breaking then we could specifically write in an exemption to the spell where it would allow you to learn about the curse but not break it. The part about suppressing supernatural/spell-like powers was what I was really not sure about. I liked the idea of it but I'm not sure how it would work out in practice. I had imagined it for holding captives or performing interrogations, but many creatures have multiple ways of transporting themselves (teleportation, plane shift, ethereal jaunt, etc.) so suppressing a single one of them might not be useful. Thanks for the input! I was aiming for somewhere around 5th with all the capabilities, but I knew I'd have blind spots for my own material. Now I need to see what the GM thinks...
Giant Friendly Talking Spider
@GM: What level would you place this spell at? I was reading dispel magic and it didn't really fit Tia, along with overlapping with Zadlu. Something like this seems much more her style, even if it would be several levels until she could learn it... UNWEAVING
You can use unweaving to end one ongoing spell, to disenchant a magic item, or to suppress a creature's ability to use supernatural abilities and spell-like effects. When used against an ongoing effect, treat the effect as though it were affected by dispel magic and the caster had achieved a dispel check of 20 + their caster level. When cast on a magic item, that item is permenantly disenchanted. Intelligent items and items that are being worn or carried by a creature are allowed a will save to resist this effect. The caster gains information about an object affected by unweaving similar to that provided by the legend lore spell if the object was of legendary importance. When cast on a creature the caster can suppress any or all of the creature's supernatural or spell-like abilities, both ending any active effects and preventing the creature from activating them. Any caster level checks required to overcome spell resistance are treated as though the caster achieved a result of 20 + caster level. This effect lasts for as long as the caster maintains concentration and one minute per level after their concentration is broken.

A few other notes: You have your dexterity factored into weapon damage... where does that ability come from? Your SR is listed as 14. I believe it should take into account your HD as well as your class level. I count 69 skill ranks assigned, vs the 66 from levels/hit dice/favored class (cleric). You only paid the enchantment value for your scimitar and not the masterwork value (+300gp) ...and that's all I see. You are going to be neigh-invincible if we get a round or two to buff you. Your AC can reach the 50s with a little work, which means you'll only get hit with true strike and a lot of luck!
Giant Friendly Talking Spider
@Elita: That is a crazy, crazy character. Your template-fu is strong. I'm starting to feel like an underdog- maybe I should play a fiendish aranea :P I'm going to stick with a mortal, but I'm feeling like quite the underdog! Only two things jump out at me: You have monk (martial artist) on your sheet, but it looks like you went with monk (weapon adept). How are you able to use the scimitar as a finesse weapon/monk weapon? It looks like your BAB and saves are still being calculated as a higher level monk

Quote: The caster level of all spells in a staff must be the same, and no staff can have a caster level of less than 8th, even if all the spells in the staff are low-level spells Yep, there it is. Somehow I managed to miss that through two readings. Guess I'll go with a wand!
Giant Friendly Talking Spider
I'm much more familiar with the craft wondrous items rules than the craft staff rules, but the magic item creation page, under creating staves didn't mention anything about a minimum caster level for creating a staff. I assumed it would follow the spell level x caster level formula that everything else uses. I was also guessing about the value of summon monster II when limited to only air elementals. Finally, I assumed the price reduction was for reducing the maximum number of charges that the staff could hold from 10 to 8. It seems unlikely that the staff would be considerd to have a value comparable to that of a +2 weapon. If the price is that different from what I thought, I'll probably go with a wand of unseen servant instead.
Giant Friendly Talking Spider
Cool. I bought it with 8 charges = 2400*.8 = 1920gp. I really wanted both magic missile and unseen servant since Tia really would have no desire to take care of everyday boring, mundane tasks like cooking and cleaning by herself. The staff makes for a nice compromise, and fits in the Efficient Quiver for easy storage :)

@GM: Would you allow me to buy a magic staff with starting wealth? Something like this: Quote:

I didn't notice any traits chosen on your character sheet, here are a few that might help: Traits:
Demon Hunter (LE): Raised in the church (whether or not you are currently a follower), you’ve focused your indoctrinated fervor primarily on the elimination of demons. You gain a +3 trait bonus on Knowledge (planes) checks about demons and a +2 trait bonus on Will saves against mind-affecting spells and effects from demons.
Courageous: Your childhood was brutal, yet you persevered primarily through force of will and faith that no matter how hard things might get, as long as you kept a level head you'd make it through. You gain a +2 trait bonus on saving throws against fear effects. Indomitable Faith: You were born in a region where your faith was not popular, but you never abandoned it. Your constant struggle to maintain your own faith has bolstered your drive; you gain a +1 trait bonus on Will saves as a result. Natural-Born Leader: You've always found yourself in positions where others look up to you as a leader, and you can distinctly remember an event from your early childhood where you led several other children to accomplish a goal that each of you individually could not. All cohorts, followers, or summoned creatures under your leadership gain a +1 morale bonus on Will saves to avoid mind-affecting effects. If you ever take the Leadership feat, you gain a +1 trait bonus to your Leadership score. I'm not sure how well some of them might fit what you have in mind for Chess's personality or past, but it never hurts to have options. Also, your SR should help against most effects that require a will save... @Abdiel: The more I read up on toppling spell, the more I like it. I was thinking of taking quicken spell for my next feat, but toppling spell might trump it. I already have a 2nd level and a 3rd level force-effect spell...
Giant Friendly Talking Spider
Forget intimidate, Profession (lawyer) is perfect! Alter self is only 1 minute/level... with disguise self you could appear as any sort of Outsider, including the good ones and the more human-like ones. Toss in notdetection and you've got a heck of a disguise... @Abdiel: Yeah, all that is why feather fall made my short list. I'll probably end up going with it, I just love unseen servant as a utility spell. I'd definitely take it if I had another 1st level spell slot, but I don't think I can squeeze it into the 5 I have. True Strike is the only thing I'd consider dropping...
Giant Friendly Talking Spider
Since we've had some time, I've been thinking about last-minute tweaks to Tia. I have charm monster so I'm going to drop charm person but I'm not sure whether I want to replace it with feather fall or unseen servant. Any thoughts? EDIT @Zadlužený: Have you considered intimidate for your remaining skill points? Even without the class skill bonus you'd be pulling +17
Giant Friendly Talking Spider
Wow, the diabolist imp works a little different from the other imps I've seen. I think everything is where it should be... have a look! I seems weird that their alternate shape is limited to one form, but as long as I get a spider I can live with that... I'm not sure if I should use the same HP rules that you gave for PCs... here are my dice rolls: 7d10 ⇒ (5, 2, 10, 5, 3, 1, 8) = 34 = 48 if I use max 1st hit dice and minimum roll of 5.
