I'm almost in California...

No, I'm not kidding. One of our city streets crosses the border.

So...

FINALLY moved out of my parents place. The "temporary" living arrangement lasted 6+ years, and was ruining relationships.

Kiddo has her own room for the first time ever.

We have our bedroom to ourselves for the first time in 3 years.

Life is good.

Horrible awful thing happened here last night.

Someone burned down the 100% donation-funded, volunteer-built Castle playground. It was highly accessible for all children (even had special swings and a wheelchair friendly surface).

Not sure how I'm going to explain this to kiddo. I know she's going to cry.

Alternatively, you could do as my parents used to do and regift something you had gotten as a white elephant gift on a previous occasion. In fact, in town we lived in while I was growing up, there was a "tradition" amongst the churchfolk that there was one specific item, I forget what it was, that was handed around every year as a white elephant gift. It had changed hands every year for over 20 years at the time we moved away.
I believe those are called "mathoms".
Personally, I just refer to them as "useless crap".
So...math books?

Sounds like a certain scene in Cinderella.

We're freezing here!! Not really, we have highs in the 60s yesterday and today. Almost a 20 degree drop in weather over the period of 1 day.

I appreciate the help, really. When it's actually helping.

It just adds up, and my tolerance for dealing with it is low since I'm fighting a cold too.

Most of the time, it's not so bad. But since I'm sick, she's "helping."

Which is why I believe CA poisoned my mom. She wore long sleeves this year until the weather hit 105+.

Santa Barbara was pretty bad about only having one season. Weather never seemed to change much.

Yeah speaking as someone who has lived in a mostly mono-weather state - Arizona has "summer" (hot and dry), "monsoon" (hot and humid), or "winter-ish" (cooler and occasionally rainy but otherwise dry) - Texas has fairly varied and distinct weather patterns for the different months. They're all warmer than further north, but it's pretty clear when spring becomes summer, summer becomes autumn, autumn becomes winter, winter becomes spring. It's about as clear as it is here in Tennessee/Georgia.
if it's warm, it's not winter.
Warm is relative in this context. Yeah, if you were to visit there, or move there, you'd probably consider it warm (at least for the first few yeras, until your body acclimated). But compared to the rest of the year it's noticeably colder and with different weather patterns.

If by warm you mean highs in the 60s, yeah. There were times I had to defrost my windows before driving to work.

Incoming rant about common core & "new math" approaches

Spoiler:
The biggest issue with the way math is being taught, especially at the younger ages, centers around the student being able to "develop" these skills... a la critical thinking and examining patterns. A CHILD'S BRAIN DOES NOT HAVE THE CAPACITY FOR THIS. The brain is physically unable to do these types of critical thinking/logic skills until later in life. (It usually manifests mid-teen years, which is why Euclidean Geometry was taught at the sophomore/junior level.) By expecting children to "learn" to critical think, they are frustrating them and driving them away from developing an enjoyment of math! Worse, those of us who HAVE to teach these programs are usually as lost as the children since the process no longer teaches in a logical manner. I kid you not, the lesson plans in my student teaching jumped around topic to topic before circling BACK around to finish teaching the first topic weeks later. ARGH!

I hate that children (and parents) are learning to hate something due to improper curriculum.

It depends on what is meant by geometry. Geometry as the study of shapes, areas, perimeters, and angles in the fifth grade is good.

What most "old timers" like me remember as high school geometry is more appropriately called Euclidean geometry--proofs along with the study of the other stuff. Fifth grade is really too young to make the critical thinking leaps that these require. In fact, most teens don't have the brain capability to do them until between 15-16. (My dad, who taught high school geometry for 10 years or so said you could see in the students' works when they suddenly were able to make those critical thinking leaps.)

As a side note, most common core programs (at least in AZ) have done away with such proofs. Geometry ended up melded into the algebra classes instead. (As though there wasn't enough to cover already!)

Well, temperatures are climbing back up to 90. Still, it was nice to wear jeans instead of shorts for a few days.

Yeah, I'm starting at about 1/3 of that.

Really, I'm NOT in this for the pay. (Although it's significantly higher than what I was making before going back to school.) I'm one of those odd ducks who enjoys teaching, and loves math.

Sadly, I found out that the bachelor's degree pay scale tops out after 8 years, so I"ll be going BACK to school to get my Masters within a few years.

while I am diametrically opposed to math, I can only sing the praises of one who teaches for the love of the subject. I hope the kids and the administration and politics don't grind that love out of you, I truly truly do.

Love your passion. Still hate math.

Fun fact! Diametrically is derived from diameter, a math term! Still hate math? =D

Scint, I love you and your root words. :D

As my father said, teaching is a fine profession, once the administrators stay out of it.

I received my official offer of employment from the high school I applied at yesterday.

As of January, I begin my teaching career!

Our temperatures dropped from 91F to 75F in one night. We'll be back up in the 80s next week, but steadily cooling off for the rest of the year.

In other words, I get to wear shoes instead of sandals.

Also, kiddo found my Kindle. After random button mashing, she managed to order two books I've never heard of for about $20. Didn't know about it until I got the e-mail from Amazon.

So. Things happening.

Still waiting on pins and needles for the high school to respond about the prospective job starting in January. Going to start as a long-term substitute, and they'll switch to a contract once I finish the classes/certification.

Kinda scary when I say that.

Not sure how well done, though.

Probably rare, with my luck.

Or option C: send out resumes and apply for jobs that look like an improvement, but allow yourself to be choosy, since you already have a paycheck. (No need to bother with temp agencies.) If something comes up that is really promising, have a sick day or fake doctor's appointment so you can interview. Worst thing that happens is no one bites, and you are back at option A.

I've gone with option C at least twice, and found jobs where I was better off. It's how I got the one I have now.

Exactly what CH said. Start looking in the usual places, but don't quit your job until you have another lined up & accepted.

I know you mentioned loving your boss. Is he/she still there? Or did this new non-human take over?

Talk with the supervisor, perhaps. If the new non-human is unresponsive, it might be time to take it up with someone higher up the ladder. (If the original is still there, you might want to go over your supervisor's head and explain the situation.)

And yet another instance of red-tape holding up a crucial part of a class...

I want to be DONE.

I like cats, just don't want to own any.

Orthos, there was a time when we hired a friend-of-a-friend as a cat-sitter. (I want to say that was for the Christmas trip when it snowed.) Quill basically got left in a room with little food or water, iirc. But I could be wrong.

@ Orthos - If there will be no one home during the day, and they're not going to be outdoors cats, I definitely suggest two as opposed to one. A kitty without a playmate is an unhappy, mischievous kitty indeed.

Yeah I was thinking similarly. Outdoors isn't an option (apartment and all) and me being gone about 9 hours of most days with no one else home.

It'll be a few months before I can consider it in greater detail though.

Based on past experience, more than two cats is not at all a good idea, but two is just about perfect. Although our current two are kind of avoiding each other. They are humorously polite about everything, even taking turns when they both want to play with the same toy.

Yeah. I had a lone cat when I was out in Arizona, about five or six years ago. His two siblings belonged to Ebon and my brother. Those two became the sweetest cats I'd ever seen. Mine became a mean little gutter who really only liked me, and not terribly much.

There were other contributing circumstances, such as some mistreatment by a caretaker while we were away for a trip to visit the parents, but I imagine being home alone a lot probably didn't do much for kitten psyche either.

Actually, I contribute that cat's problems to two things:

1) A "friend" who was letting the kittens stay at his place until Orthos had his apartment situated decided at about 3 months old that they needed to be outdoor cats without consulting us first. My cats stayed on the porch. Orthos' ran off and became quite feral. In fact, when we reclaimed the kittens, Orthos' was missing. It wasn't until a month later that he reappeared.

2) Lack of cat-friendly environment (scratchers, kitty lounges/shelves/etc.) and company

Note that by the time the caretaker situation had happened, the cat had already attacked your brother TWICE, my mom, and a few others. So, as bad as that situation was, it was not the cause.

Sorry for the derail.

Speaking of guides, I find myself using guides a lot more these days than I would have when I was younger. Possibly a reflection of having less time to commit to games, and figuring things out myself.

It's supposed to be a donation of $10 and the ice water, or a donation of $100. I've seen plenty of celebrities doing both a high-dollar donation AND the ice water.

Or you could take Sir Patrick Stewart's response as inspiration.
