Thanks for the game, GM!

I've actually been thinking the same thing-- the game doesn't feel as exciting when you already have a pretty good idea what you're going to roll in any given round. It's certainly a different way of playing, but it makes me prefer the old-fashioned way. I've been curious about this style of gameplay for a long time, though, so I'm glad to have been a part of it. Cheers!

Male Human

"Can't you tell how worried your father is? And I don't think you appreciate how long we've been looking for you! It's been..." Yarin trails off, counting in his head. "Well, a long time, okay?"

Casting bane on the princess and her allies, who need to make DC 15 Will saves.

Male Human

Ah, finals. How I don't miss thee. (Part of why I'm not keen to go to graduate school.)

Male Human

"Come on, princess, that was too easy! We have clearance to be here. Don't make my friend here bust the door down!" Yarin decides not to specify which friend, exactly, would be doing the busting.

Yarin laughs. "Could be. Because tomorrow, today will be yesterday. Let's go find our missing person!"

"That's not-- you can't foresee the past, Unk. You assume they haven't been with us long."

"Uh, are we a band now?" Unk asks while following Junior and the imp.

Yarin shrugs as they climb the staircase. "With this group, I've learned to just go with it."

Male Human

But with the door closed, it seems. Yarin pats Junior on the shoulder. "You're doing great!" he whispers.

Bit of Luck to Junior.

Male Human

"Oho, what's this? Looks like someone's here! There's a boat nest to that cave."

Male Human

Yarin hops from the boat, energized by the prospect of discovering a place he'd never been before. "I do believe you're right. Probably not over there, though." He scans the area.

Perception: 3d6 + 4 ⇒ (2, 6, 3) + 4 = 15

"We'll find you, Miss Kirin!" he calls out. "And your little dog, too!"

Male Human

Yarin summons his second and last force weapon, hoping to show the dragon there might be easier meals to find than they.

Spiritual weapon I: 3d6 + 7 ⇒ (2, 3, 3) + 7 = 15
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Spiritual weapon II: 3d6 + 7 ⇒ (1, 1, 5) + 7 = 14
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

The first promptly winks out of existence.

Male Human

Oh whoops, didn't think about that. So it definitely doesnt hit. And I'll save my other one for when this one expires, but maybe I can doom her (DC 15 Will negates).

Male Human

"And off this mortal coil, too!"

Spiritual weapon + inspire: 3d6 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (6, 1, 4) + 7 + 1 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 + 1 = 7

Male Human

Yarin's force weapon strikes the dragon while he himself grants Junior a bit of his luck magic.

Spiritual weapon + inspire: 3d6 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (6, 3, 6) + 7 + 1 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 + 1 = 6

Bit of Luck to Junior (roll 4d6 and drop the lowest)

Male Human

Sorry, sorry.

Yarin summons a ghostly starknife to attack the dragon.

Ask, and it shall be granted. :)
Spiritual weapon: 3d6 + 7 ⇒ (5, 6, 1) + 7 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Male Human

Swapped out a few of my spells prepared.

"Was it Kiwi? I don't remember thinking about fruit at the time... Maybe it was Kili?" Yarin smiles. "That's what we're going to do the dragon, right? Kili it!"

Perhaps he should leave the comedy to the others.

Male Human

Yarin exhales. "That was a close one. Who would've thought that the elf would have such a taste for pickles?"

Male Human

"Don't be modest," he teases Junior, "you're just her type!"

Perception: 3d6 + 4 ⇒ (1, 4, 4) + 4 = 13

"Mercenaries, all right. That's Fogshot's badge, too."

Male Human

Weird-- I was on my phone and didn't see any links in that post. Oh well. I don't have anyone high enough for Passing The Torch, but I've put my name in for Midnight Mirror.

Hey Amsheagar! I have:

Level 4.0 Sandman Bard
Level 4.2 URogue
Level 4.1 Wizard

My preference would probably be the rogue, but if we need arcane skills I've got us covered.

Male Human

With his allies now in position, Yarin draws his starknife and slashes.

Starknife + bless + flank: 3d6 + 6 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (4, 6, 3) + 6 + 1 + 2 = 22
Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Male Human

Fun! Which games?

Male Human

Yarin calls on the blessings of Desna.

Casting bless, so everyone gets +1 to attacks. I really need to switch out my spells when we hit level 8. Most of the ones I have that give bonuses don't stack with bardic performance. :(

Male Human

Yarin steps up to grant Wizzer divine luck.

Using Bit of Luck on Wizzer. For the next round roll 4d6 and drop the lowest.

Oops, my bad for not healing up after the last fight.

Channel energy: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7
Channel energy: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5

That should bring everyone to almost full pre-encounter.

Male Human

With one dragon down, Yarin moves further into the cave and directs his weapon to the next.

Spiritual weapon vs blue: 3d6 + 7 ⇒ (6, 4, 6) + 7 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

@Yarin: What's a d20? ;p

Darn it! That's the second time I've done that.

Spiritual weapon: 3d6 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (6, 3, 3) + 7 + 1 = 20

Male Human

Yarin conjures his ghostly starknife again, next to the mommy dragon.

Spiritual weapon: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 7 + 1 = 26
Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 1 = 5

Male Human

"I foresee something right now too," Yarin says with a glance at Unk. "Doom."

The closer lizard needs to make a Will save (DC 15) or be doomed.

Would a heart need a cure spell, or more like a restoration spell? I can do one, but not the other.

Male Human

Yarin draws his starknife and casts a spell on it, which glows with the same magical light as Unk's pebble. "Might be a good idea to have more than one-- we humans can't see as well as you can."

Male Human

"I'd love to fly, Junior. Unfortunately I don't have that kind of magic either. Any ideas?"

Male Human

I imagine it would get pretty insane. But don't worry, Unk. If you're the Venkman of the group, I'm the Winston Egon who keeps things on track.

Male Human

"Sounds like just the kind of daring assignment we've been looking for." Yarin turns to his allies. "What do you say, gents? Head to the docks and risk life and limb for a rescue?"

"Great job everyone. Except you, Matra, who has always been here and is in no way new to the group. Try to contribute more in the future."

I went into this game with two main expectations:

-Attacks will succeed most of the time, assuming you had a decent chance to begin with. Pathfinder expects the players will win most fights (it wouldn't be much fun otherwise!), so adding more randomness favors the monsters-- and adding less favors the players. The 3d6 system is a lot less random.

-Bonuses and penalties will matter more. Since 3d6 will usually be ~11, even a +1 can make a big difference.

So far, both of those are true. I have to admit I'm not very impressed with the revamped Bit of Luck domain power (roll 4d6 and drop the lowest, instead of rerolling, since rerolling 3d6 is less likely to be much higher). But when you think about it, it makes sense: 4d6 minus the lowest isn't THAT much higher, whereas a d20 reroll can make a substantial difference.

Overall, it definitely changes the game.

Male Human

Still spinning, Yarin's ghostly starknife continues tearing into the owlbear.

Spiritual weapon: 3d6 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (1, 3, 3) + 7 + 1 = 15
Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 1 = 4

Male Human

Derp. I just realized I rolled the wrong thing for my attack roll. Old habits! It should have been:

Spiritual weapon: 3d6 + 7 ⇒ (3, 5, 3) + 7 = 18

Male Human

Eager to show off a new spell he'd been practicing, Yarin chants a prayer to Desna. A ghostly starknife appears in midair next to the beast and, with a dexterity Yarin himself couldn't hope to match, sets to spinning and hurls itself against the half-owl, half-bear-pig.

Spiritual weapon: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Force damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Male Human

Yea you can keep editing your posts until the hour runs out, regardless of posts under it. This can lead to situations where a later post references something that no longer exists in an earlier post. It's not usually too confusing though.

Male Human

Cool. Congrats on the new job!

Male Human

Yarin smiles, despite the uneasy feeling that the mayor's answer won't be so carefree. "Because she's out spending more of your gold than you can afford to give her?"

Male Human

"Well, could you maybe send someone to ask him? If he really does need something, and finds out you sent away the ones who offered to help, I can't imagine that would go well for you."

Diplomacy + Bit of Luck: 4d6 + 1 ⇒ (1, 4, 5, 5) + 1 = 16 =15

"What my friend means to say," Yarin interjects, with a hand on Unk's shoulder, "is that we've heard the mayor has a problem we might be able to help with. Do either of you know anything about that?"

Ranger Wizzer wrote:
"I'm so happy we are back in town where the spiders are kept to a reasonable size."

Yarin raises his glass. "I'll drink to that!" He takes a long swallow. "Have to say, though, I thought we made a pretty good team back there. What's say we share the road for a while? You never know what might turn up out there, and having people to watch your back is always welcome."

Male Human

Almost ready, just have to pick spells. Hoping I can do that by the end of the day.

Also, I'm getting married on Saturday so my posting will be limited for a while. I doubt I'll be able to post at all tomorrow or Saturday, and only sparingly until Tuesday the 26th. Please bot me as needed; Yarin tries to be a boon to his allies more than a bane to his enemies (casting helpful spells and so on).

Male Human

Huzzah!

Male Human

I imagine the only two deities who would be actively opposed to cremation would be Gozreh (why waste perfectly good plant/worm food?) and Urgathoa (for obvious reasons). So that sounds good to me!

Male Human

I don't have anything as flashy or obvious as Junior does. Well done!

Yarin peers over the well and frowns. "I might be able to purify this well, but it will have to be tomorrow. I can only ask for spells during my morning prayers."

Purify food and drink is a 0-level spell, so even though it only cleans one cubic foot of water, I could eventually do the whole well right?

Male Human

If that's all she wants... I've got a spare. Yarin holds out the starknife, then pulls his arm back. "First, we need to know something. Are you the one who's been causing trouble for the town?"
