I think that is the best path as well. My character probably lacks the knowledge to come to that conclusion however. Varrick nods toward Aerys Trayjon, "I don't mind, and it might behoove use to gather provisions." Varrick sees that nobody else has gone off after Aerys Movato and follows after. "Hello, Aerys, we are looking to leave soon, but I'd like to chat with you first if you don't mind."

Varrick tilts his head and thinks for a moment, "If this place is really full of cannibals I think we will have more need for a secure shelter than for gold. A tower seems a lot easier to defend than a beach or even a forest clearing. I would go there first." "And I suppose one of us should go chat with Movato...no use in getting separated."

Seeing little serious debate and no knowledge that makes a clear case for guilt, Varrick retrieves his ax and slides the blade across the bindings. "I think a small fence might be the best defense we can muster. Want to help me gather stakes? And maybe a few more pieces of wood to set up a work area. I would like to get working as soon as possible, if we are lucky I can create a few potions that might help us get around in the water. Oh and maybe you should make a club, just in case things get hairy." Survival check 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7

Varrick thinks it over for a bit, before asking the others their opinions. "His story seems to have the smell of truth. If he did something truly horrible, why keep him alive. And if he did what they said or something else like that, then being banished is not a bit worse than being marooned, so he is punished anyhow. Anyone mind if I cut him loose" Sense motive 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4. What should I roll to look for supplies to set traps or rig some sort of fence system to keep out cannibals?

Varrick's eyebrows arch. "So I guess we should build some defenses. I certainly have no interest in dying, and being eaten would only make it worse." He continues talking as he makes a short trip up the beach to look for materials to build such a defense. "Tell you what Jask, we are all stuck here for a while, and, believe you or not, we have a long time to be here, and will run out of things to talk about sooner or later. Besides, if at all possible, I'd like to let you out. Plus, I think, given the circumstances, we are going to have to trust each other more than we might otherwise."

Varrick begins to answer the older man ash they shake hands, "When we got out of the water, our gear was piled up neatly. Plus it seems you have been out of the water longer..." Then as the gnome's statement sinks in, "...did you say cannibals, there are cannibals here? How do you know? Where are we?"

Varrick goes over to check on the other passengers. "It seems we are in a serious mess. I suppose one you you dragged us out and gathered our things and so we have much to be thankful for. I don't think we were ever truly introduced and this really doesn't seem like the time for formalities, but, hello, my name is Varrick and I am pleased to meet you."

Varrick whispers back to Aerys, "There is a toxin that could do this, and it is the sort that would require digestion. But, I suppose the better question is where are all the sailors. It seems unlikely that at least one person didn't eat the soup or was naturally resistant. I have to suspect that they were in on it."

Varrick eats his soup silently savoring it and mentally cataloging its likely contents. He watches Torolf heal the dwarf with silent bemusement. "So what are everyone's plans? I myself am planning on beginning a small menagerie, mostly plants and small animals for study. Maybe setting up shop and selling a potion or two."

Varrick smiles, it wouldn't have been his first choice of retorts but he likes the dwarf's swagger. Turning to the captain, "Not to be a prude, but is there any way we can have this discussion when he is wearing pants. I am betting this will all make more sense then and I for one would feel more comfortable."

Varrick tipped his hat, "Hello Mr., I mean captain Kovack." Seeing that he had interrupted a conversation, "Sorry for interrupting sir, I have been waiting for a ship heading toward the Mwangi Expanse and I heard that yours was. I am a competent healer and hard worker if the need be. I don't know if that is what you are looking for, or if I should just pay my way...in any case, I would like to come aboard."

Varrick looks over a diagram of the dock and heads toward the Jeneviere. As he nears the ship he shouts from the dock, "Hello there, I am looking to speak with the captain. Oo, maybe not. Can't be sure. Let me rephrase, I am looking to speak with whomever is in charge of passengers." He mutters to himself under his breath, "Good job, you have been here for less than a minute and have already begun offending people. Big foot meet bigger mouth."

Varrick had been up for hours packing. He certainly shouldn't have stopped to examine the flora native to the island as it hadn't turned out to be an especially pleasant place to live. Its excellence in the alchemical arts was evident, never had he seen poison so expertly crafted and applied. That said, the place was uncouth and rowdy, not a very dignified place to set up a research facility. Moreover his background materials were mostly concerned with the Mwangi and it was too close (conceptually if not geographically) to pass up. He had heard the Jenivere would arrive soon and wanted to see for himself. He presented himself to the transfer agent. "Good day sir, I have been trying to find my way toward the Mwangi for a couple weeks now and I heard the Jenivere was to dock, if not today than soon, any news?"

My first level spells are pretty limited and I can definitely cover Comprehend Languages. My bombs are a pretty decent low level AoE which might overlap/cover the burning hands concern. My sheet is up. Getting the portable alchemist lab with limited funds was quite a stretch, but I think it may be worthwhile. |
