Born in Cheliax to two half-orc parents, Varrick made every effort to study hard and to try and get into University of Egorian. Time and time again he was turned away. His father, an apothecary began to teach him the family trade, which Varrick has taken up with vigor.
He denies any real magical ability, noting that most of his concoctions don't do much of anything and the ones that do work best seem to work best only for him. He worries that this may be due to some quirk of his race and has hesitated to share his more avante-garde wares with people of other races out of concern for their health.
Varrick is an amateur botanist with a rather extensive collection of plants and is dedicated to learning more. He has been planning this trip to the Mwangi Exapanse for years and has dedicated himself to learning all he can about the people and languages of the region.
On board the Jeneviere he has been cultivating ocean slime and performing experiments upon these slimes. Most of the experiments have proved fruitless but occasionally something restorative will be made and pure cultures of the "most blue slime" causes a temporary increase in strength and vigor, an unprecedentedly good result to his view.
