Stealth vs Perception is a contest of skills. So lets assume that the stealthy person ambushing gets a 25 for the skill contest, and the Ambushee gets a 25 on his perception attack to see the ambush. Who wins?

Same thing with Perception vs Sleight of Hand. Does a sleight of hand roll of 25 set the target at 25 for the perception so a 25 wins? or does a perception roll of 25 set the target for sleight of hand to hit so a 25 succeeds on slight of hand?

A level 5 wizard can create a +5 sword by beating the DC by 5 to bypass the caster level requirement. If someone wants to Identify this sword later is the target based on his level of 5 or the caster level for a +5 sword (15).

If you can enchant at a higher level caster could a 11th level caster by adding 5 to the dc craft a staff with fireball at level 20 caster level (dc 20 +5 +5 (not having that level) for 30 DC)?

I don't see anything in the rules to stop it, but I am not sure it is legitimate. Could a person use two meta magic rods to modify the same spell if there were no somatic gestures required for the spell?

Doppelgangers use Alter Self for their change shape ability.

Would scent defeat a doppelganger?

Would scent defeat a wizard using Alter Self?

How does sneak attack interact with Pummeling style.

Example: 12th level Unchained monk/8th level unchained Rogue Multiclass. With Pummeling strike he rolls 6 attacks and does normal damage and adds it up as one strike. ASSUMING all 6 attacks hit.... does he 4d6 sneak attack or 24d6 sneak attack?

The rules say "The eidolon does not heal naturally."

Our group was unsure what this meant.

Option 1) The eidolon does not gain HD over night as a character or animal companion would equal to their HD.

Option 2) The Eidolon can only be healed by the spell "Rejuvinate Eidolon" and Clerical magic or bursts would not heal it.

This was not mentioned in the APG FAQ so I was wondering if there was an offical answer? or failing that what the general consensus is?

I am considering a character for a campaign that will start off as students in arcane academy. I am considering focusing the character on crafting.

Possible ideas:

Mystic Theurge (early access) Advantage access to Divine and arcane magic.

Wizard access to lots of arcane spells and the Discovery "Wand Like Staff".

Arcanist (bloodline) Lots of spells known, with Arcane bloodline at level 20 can use spell levels instead of charges.

All of them work fine for your basic craft wondrous or arms and armor since you can bypass requirements with a +5... but which overall would be the best?

Cone spells have certain unique qualities about them.

1) they alway orginate at the hand of the caster so while it may have a 15' range, it does not start at that range but instead at teh caster and extends out in a cone shape to that max range.

2) While they cover an area, it is based off the template rather then a radius or square.

So could a Cone spell ,lets use color spray as an example, be modified my the metamagic Reach allowing it to start at Short distance and go out as a cone from a point 25' from the caster?

Could the metamagic Widen be used to change color spray from a 15' cone to a 30' cone despite the fact area is stated as "cone shaped burst" rather then 20' radius spread.

If neihter of these work (and I supsect they do not) SHOULD there be a way of modifying a cone spell?

OK grease has an area of a 10' square. Below is an example of an 8 square by 8 square are with a grease spell in it.

XXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXX
XXXGGXXX
XXXGGXXX
XXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXX

You can not take a 5' step if the area you are moving INTO is difficult terrain or slows you down. In fact I belive for all movement it is based on the square you are moving into.

Since everywhere in a standard grease spell (assuming no walls or other obstacles or rough terrain or snare spells) there is a Normal square next to it can someone just 5' step out of grease?

Can they MOVE Action or Charge out of grease (assumign straight line and the only grease hex is the one they start in) not even worrying about half speed since the squares they are using for their entire move are not greased?

Seems like a simple question....

Lets assuem a monk hits for 1d10 and has no other bonuses.

He does a Janni Rush which does doulbe damage, and crits.

USUALLY 2 doublings is equal to a trippling in Pathifnder math.

So is it 3d10? or is it 2d10 x2? or is it 1d10 x2 + 1d10?

LEANING towards 1d10 X2 + 1d10 but not quite sure.

5 people marked this as FAQ candidate. 1 person marked this as a favorite.

OK, I have two questions about the new FAQ and I would like to make sure I understand them. They had both been asked in the "Ask James Jacobs Thread" and given differnt answers. Since this has now been officially answered I want to make sure I am correct on the offical stance.

Question 1) Fury's Fall. Let's assume a fighter with a 14 str and a 18 Dex.
With no feats they have a +2 based on stats to trip (str).
With Agile Maneuvers they have a +4 on stats to trip (dex).
With Fury's Fall (and NOT Agile Maneuvers) they have +6 to trip (str and dex).
If they add Agile Maneuvers to the mix do they drop to +4? or do they stay +6? or something else?

Question 2) Paladin/Oracle with Side Step Secrets. Lets assume Dex 12 and Charisma 18.
Without Side Step Secrets they have a +5 on reflex save (4 from Charisma and 1 from Dex).
Without Divine Grace they have a +4 on reflex save (4 from charisma instead of dex).
Combining the two Do they now have only a +4? Since otherwise they are counting Charisma twice (even though one is an addition and the other is a replacement)?

Considering how LONG the threads discussing this have been, I would prefer for people to please not answer and clog this up (or ask even more convoluted examples) but instead let the dev team answer if they choose to. Signal to noise ratio and all that :)

Thank you.

In the Monster Codex, the CR of the creatures with class levels appears to be CR + Level.

So a Boggard Champion (Cr7) is CR2 Boggard with 5 levels of fighter.
A Serpentfolk Bone Prophet CR11 is CR4 Serpentfolk + 7 levels of Oracle.

In bestiary we had rules for Players as Monsters. Which basically said start at the CR add levels but after every 3 levels reduce the BASE CR by 1 to a minimum of 1/2 the orignal CR.

So a Boggard champion would be (level 6) equivalent and a Serpentoflk Bone Prophet would be (level 9).

While I realize there is a differnce between CR and Level, shoujld we not keep these the same? The Bone Prophet CR11 should be an easy fight for 4 11th level characters using 1/4th of their resources... but it is in reality the equivalent of a 9th level character.

With Fire Giant it is even worse the Fire Giant King CR 20 (cr 10 FG _ 10 Fighter) would be the equivalent of a 17th level charcter.

Are the old rules in Bestiary being deprecated? or was this an oversight or something else all together?

OK, it is always accepted that Wood Oracle can get Early entry into Mystic theurge with "Bend the Grain".

Why can't a Lore Oracle get early entry with "Automatic Writing" at first level it manifests as an Augury Spell which is second level divine?

I am sure there is a reason as it is not in the guides and never mentioned but I can't see it?

OK, by RAW if you cast a stilled silent spell with no components there is not penalty to recognizing it and everyone gets a normal roll. Oh the spell caster (or spell like ability user) over there is casting Glib, don''t belive anythign he says until it wears off.

This has been explained as you see the actual magic of the spell or something....

Secret Signs gives you the ability that if you cast a somatic only spell they must make a perception check vs your slight of hand to notice spell casting.... How is this easier then a stilled spell. In fact stilling a spell would make it so it would be easier to spot your casting.....

Does not compute.

Full disclosure I am of the opinion (even though it has been declared invald) that a Stilled, Silent, No Material spell should not be obvious to every Tom Dick and Harry who happens to be in sight.

IMHO just as Quickening a spell means it no longer provokes, spells with still silent and no material should not be seen, especially automatically.

Mystic Theurge is a 10 level prestige class where both arcane and divine get a level of spell casting. Prior to level 20 you can not go beyond levle 10 in a 10 level prestige class.

Evangelist has the ability to give you a virtula level in a class (and does not limit it to base classes).

Would a Wizard 3/Cleric 3/MT 10/Evangelist 4 (class modified being MT) be legal and effectivley level 16 in both wizard and cleric.

I imagine by RAW yes, by RAI no but thought I would ask.

So you sneak into an Ambush position, you have suprise, yet you can not use "Sleep Spell" because it is a full round action and you only have a standard action..

So how does a 1 round casting spell interact with suprise round. A FAIR way of ding it might be, you start the spell in suprise round (using yoru standard action) and on your turn next round you finsih it using up your move action.

Does seem sort of strange that in a suprise situation you can not start out with a Sleep spell.

Am I missing something to legally suprise with a sleep spell?

People have at various times claimed that Initiative is an Ability check (off dex) so if you had some ability to reroll an ability check or apply +x to ability checks you could apply it to Initiative.

Example: For whatever reason, call it divine providence, GoodyTwoShoes the Good Cleric decides to use "Touch of Good" granting a +10 bonus on an Attack Roll, Skill Check, Ability Checks and Saving throws right before iniative was called.

Does he now get a +10 on initiative?

If so can you point where in the book it states that Initiative is an ability check? As compaed to an Initiative roll which is modified by among other things once Dex (usualy) stat.

Wild Arcana is a (SU) ability that allows you to cast any spell on your list without expending a spell slot at the cost of 1 mythic point.

Supernatural abilities generally do not use any Material Components.

Does this mean with Wild Arcana a 17th level wizard could cast material component free wishes? Why pay for books when you can just Wish your stats up?

For the last three years most of my characters have had HORRENDOUS luck. However in the "runelords" adventure we just started I seem to be getting all my overdue good luck back.

Spoiler:

Currently second level, we go into the room that is a shrine of Lamashtu. 2 Sin spawns visible, a disembodied voice says something and a third sin spawn comes up from the water.

I am a fighter 2 handed weapon archetype with a naginata. Quaff the "potion of Enlarge Person" I bought with inital wealth. Kill one sin spawn with an attack of opportunity, make saving throw against imp who did a sleep hex. Myself and the archer both hit the imp (archer has cold iron arrows). Imp goes invisible, cleric shouts for ranger to close door. Fairly large room, but guess that if it went invis it was trying to escape... Pick the hex next to the door and attack. Natural 20 with a confirm and rolled 11 on 2d6 for enlarged naginata. 50 percent concealment, GM says rolls a 6to 10 on the 10 sider success. SPLAT GOES THE IMP (x4 multiplier) 92 points of damage.

Sometimes life is good.

For awesome blow it says you make a Awesome blow manuever check. So is it it's own ability? or does it get modfiers for Improved Bull Rush (the feat prereq). If it is it's own ability would that mean that things that protect against bull rush (such as a dwarfs stability would not apply?

Well I know a lot of people consider the game to break down over level x (which varies from 6 to 20). But a fried started a one shot campaign and had us all make level 20 toons.

We need to find the McGuffin to stop an Artifact Ship from plundering a city. Relatively straight forward thugh of course there are other political considerations.

Anyways we get to the entrance to the dungeon... beat up the four wandering monsters.. and now have to figure out how to get in.

By te area we think is the door is writtin in draconic "FEED me".

Linguistics notices that teh FEED is all capitals (it was not given to us told just what we saw or else linguistics might not have been necesary).

While we were considering that we needed to feed it negative energy to open we were still reconoitering. A knowledge check revelaeed that "The Deathlord" whos tomb we were plundering was from a long line of arcane casters, though MOST of them were bards.

From this we deduce that the key to opening it is to play 4 notes F E E D.

Now the party consists of a 20th level eldritch knight, a 20th level lore oracle, a 18th level wizard (Serpent Man), and a 19th level fighter (Drow Noble). After checking all our sheets the only two perform skills are Perform Oratory and Perform Dance (neither of whihc is good for precisly hitting a note.

Solution and what I consider "magical overkill" while my proposed solution of using a 9th level spell "Miracle" to create a pitch pipe. We decided to go with a simpler option and summoned a Trumpet Archon to play the notes....

I love epic stuff :)

Not saying this is cost effective, but is it legal.

Monk 4 Ninja 10

Monastic legacy feat

Unarmed combat Mastery as a Ninja Master Trick.

Hth Progression 4 (monk) + 6 (Unarmed Combat Mastery) + 5 (Monastic legacy) = 15th level pure monk hth dmage at level 14... throw in a monks robe for level 20 damage.

Now I know it is not overly powerful it noly gets you to 2d10 1 level earlier then a regular monk... but is it legal?

Shapechange, the super duper changing spell was massively nerfed in pathfinder. It lets you choose the effect from the Beast Shape, Dragon form or Elemetnal Body spells.

In a later book they came out with Monstrous Physique which let you turn in to Monstrous humanoids.

Should shapechange also allow that? since it was designed to let you turn into anything (oringally) and that spell line was not in core?

Basically should Shapechange let you turn into say a Gargoyle?

OK lets say you have a caster that does not want people to know he is casting spells. He has eschew material components, still spell, silent spell. The spell he is casting is a personal spell so not an obvious thing like fireball....

Joe Schmoe his rival wizard makes a spellcraft roll and boom he knows what spell he just cast... how?

To make matters worse there is the feat "Secret Signs" this means if you have a somatic only spell they need to roll a perception roll vs your sleight of hand to notice yoru spellcasting. How then do they even get a perception roll when the spell casting does not have ANY somatic or anything else?

Should a quickened silent, still, spell with no material components be harder to determine?

Hypothetical question.

You are playing a half elven wizard of level 5 or higher and use Paragon Surge semi regularly. You die, and are reincarnated into a goblin.

Can you still use the spell paragon surge.

I am leaning towards no, you are no longer a half elf so do not qualify for the spell, but would like other thoughts.

This should be a fairly simple straightforward answer but a friend and I disagree on how far one can move with no penalty to stealth.

Person 1 Looks at the rules and says up to half move at no penalty. So a standard human can move 15' in a round since his move is 30'.

Person 2 looks at the rules and says up to half move at no penalty. So a standard human can move 30' in a round (2 move actions of 15').

Both people are sure that theirs is OBVIOUSLY right so talk around each other. I thought I would get the general opinion of the boards.

OK, say you have a dwarven druid or a DOOAD for short...

You buy the feat Deepsight and now as a Dwarf you have 120' Darkvision.

If you change into an animal obviously you loose your darkvision :(

What if you change into an Elemental?

I see two posibilities.

1) You change into an air elemental, you now have 60' Darkvision.

2) You change into an air elemental, you now have 120' darkvision (because you are in a form that meets the prerequisites for your feat and you do not loose the feat when transforming).

What do most people believe?

So lets say you have a character who believes that magic should be free. That Magic like all resources is a finite resource and thus when a magic item si permanently bound into an item it takes away a little of the magic of the world.

This character wants to disenchant (ideally all magic items). What feats would you require?

I was thinking it might require you to be able to create an item to understand how to uncreate it. I realize the rules do not specify how to go about this but I thought I would ask the boards and see what they thought?

Character thought is Scrolls and potions fine, wands are a grey area but somewhat acceptable, other things are bad.. Artifacts are HORRIBLE AND MUST ALL BE DESTROYED!!!!

When I first signed up for the comic, I had it delay til my next order and ship with that. Shipping costs as much or more then the Comic.

Is there a way I can make all issues of the comic wait until my next role playing game subscription ships? I know this means I would sometimes get the comics 2 or 3 months later but it burns me to pay more in shipping then I do for the comic.

Ok Monks bonus movement is an Enhancement bonus so does not stack wtih Boots of Striding adn jumping, Expeditious retreat, or Haste.

Barbarians (10' untyped)
Travel Domain (10' untyped)
Sorcerer elemental fire bllodlien power (30' untyped)

Why single out monks as an Enhancement bonus?

We had a situation in the game recently where we were debating FlyBy Attck.

bestiary wrote:

Flyby Attack
This creature can make an attack before and after it moves while flying.

Prerequisite: Fly speed.

Benefit: When flying, the creature can take a move action and another standard action at any point during the move. The creature cannot take a second move action during a round when it makes a flyby attack.

Normal: Without this feat, the creature takes a standard
action either before or after its move.

Camp 1 Belives that "When flying you have yor flying move, a regular move or move equivlanet action, and a standard action". Example Witch flies 60', cackles (Move equivalent), and cast a hex (standard).

Camp 2 believes that the movement for flying counts as your move action and that you can take a standard action at any point during that 60' move but can not also take a move equivalent action.

OK Boris the Stupendous and Fantastic (BSF) for short is a Human Fighter with a 20 strength.

Carrying Capacity 400Lb heavy load.
Ant Haul for x3 encumbrabce 1200 lb.
Enlarge person to double encumbrance is the encumbrance now 1600 lbs or 2400 lbs.

If it is 1600 lbs, would that be the same for an Ogre Str 20 who got ant Haul or would the ogre have th 2400 lb limit.

How about a tiny Creature? Would it change its carrying capacity from 200 (halved due to size) to 1000? 400 x 2.5? for efecively 5x the weight?

Let's assume that you have a somewhat cowardly Half elven Mystic Theurge. He often uses the personal spell "Paragon Surge" from Advance Races Guide which requires the target to be a half elf.

Now to extend his life he chooses to become a lich.

Does this cause him to loose the ability to cast "paragon Surge"?

I am leaning toward yes by RAW.

Rules for special materials say that an item must be primarily made of metal to use special materials such as Adamantine.

Rules on Staves say they are sometimes made out of exotic materials or metals.

Some staves (Such as staff of power) are enchanted as both a weapon and a Staff, and there is no reason you could not enchant a regular staff as a weapon.

Is it then legal (I suspect not but think it should be) to enchant an Adamantine Staff? Can you imagine how much it would hurt to try a retributive strike with that? "pictures bringing it down on ones knee".

Oralces of every Mystery get a Final Relevation at level 20.

Elven oracles get the ability to pick on relevation and add 1/2 there level to it as a favored class bonus.

Could an Elven Oracle pick their Final Relevation for that. Basically levels 1-12 they take the favored class bonus of +1/2 level to final relevation and then at 14th level get their Final Relevation?

Downloaded MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

When enchanting you use Spellcraft just like a more mundane person woud use Craft Weapons. Does this qualify for the use of "Crafters Fortune" which gives a +5 on his next craft skill?

In the rule for making a Monstrous PC, they effectively use the CR of the monster as the PC level. Thus a Minotaur would be a 4th level PC, a Hound Archon would be a 4th level PC also since it is CR 4.

However as a Monstrous companion it is counted as a 7th level character.

With higher CR's the companiosn seem to get short changed.

For example lets say your Fighter decides to get a "Super Horse" with his leadership. He decides he wants a 8 legged Sleipner (beastiary 3). Well if it was made as a player character it would be 11th level (CR11) yet as a Monstrous Cohort it is 16th????

Why is there such a discrepancy?

Hoody Hoo!!!!!! Downloaded it :)

Ok, Arcane sight lets you instantly detect magic as an always on ability. You get the full 3 rounds on anything within 120'.

Quote:
This spell makes your eyes glow blue and allows you to see magical auras within 120 feet of you. The effect is similar to that of a detect magic spell, but arcane sight does not require concentration and discerns aura location and power more quickly. You know the location and power of all magical auras within your sight.

So a Rogue with his usual magical equipment tries to sneak up on a wizard with this active. Can he possibly succeed without ridding himself of his ring items which USUALLY help him stealth.

What about if he drops all items and hsi friendly mage casts invisibility on him?

Would it matter if he was a ranger or shadowdancer with hide in plain sight?

Right now it looks like Arcane Sight either trumps stealth, or makes the people sneak in without gear to be slaughtered by the fully geared party.

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

The Lore mystery of Focused Trance lets you focus on something, go into a trance and then get a +20 on an intelligence based skill.

Could this be used for the Spellcraft roll for enchanting?

What about for the Craft Armor roll for making a suit of armor?

Can a template be applied more that once?

For example a "High man" may be an advanced Human.

A Human god might be a Human that has the advanced template 4 times for demigod, 6 times for lesser, 8 times for Greater (obvioulsy gods USUALLY have more going for them than that).

Is there a rule that would stop someone from stacking a template more then once?

I realize that they can get the gunsmithing feat which lets them make or repair guns and ammo. But should there not be a skill?

That way they could also take master Craftsman and effectivel enchant their guns. Not something everyone would want but for the Dwarven Gunsmith who has spent time lovingly crafting his weapon so that it is at perfect it should be an option.

The gunsmithing ability is fine for most cases but there should be a skill for those who want to be able to make the masterwork weapons and more.

OK, I would never allow it as a GM.... But is it legal.

If Arcane Apotehsis is a class feature for a 20th level Arcane bloodlien sorcerer. It says "Whenever you use magic items that require charges, you can instead expend spell slots to power the item. For every three levels of spell slots that you expend, you consume one less charge when using a magic item that expends charges."

Use magic device says "Check: You can use this skill to read a spell or to activate a magic item. Use Magic Device lets you use a magic item
as if you had the spell ability or class features of another class, as if you were a different race, or as if you were of a different alignment."

Now lets say you are a bard and have one charge left in your "Staff of Life" but need to ressurect 2 people.

Could you use "Use magic device" to emulate the class feature of Arcane Apothesis, supply the spell slots you have as a bard and NOT burn the charge on the staff?

Most touch attacks state that it requires a melee touch attack to hit.

Most touch attacks do not have save for Half.

Harm has a safe for half and does NOT state that it requires a melee touch attack in the description (though the target is person touched).

After casting Harm do you then have to make a touch attack? I think not, but also think it could thus not be held. Would using the metamagic Reach effect this?

Could an Oracle of Heavens with the "clouded vision" curse take advantage of "guiding star" mystery.

Clouded vision stosp him seeing clearly mroe then 30'

Guiding star says whenever you can see the open sky at night.

Do these conflict? With a 30' vision can he ever see "the open sky".

I have seen several times a reference to an option for fighters called "Classicaly Trained". In exchange for their first level bonus feat they got 4 Skill points per level and I believe different skills as class skills.

Can anyone tell me where this is found?

4 people marked this as FAQ candidate. 1 person marked this as a favorite.

The Oracle of Heavens on its final revelation gains the ability to reincarnate into a "star child".

Maybe I am blind but I don't believe it says anywhere what a star child is. I don't think my GM will buy the line of reasoning that since a Solar is refenrce to sun and that a sun is really a star that it means I can reincarnate into a Solar :)

Can we possibly get a clarification as to what a "Star Child" is?
