So this came up in my group recently. How on a lance do Jousting and Deadly work together. In the end three ideas came from it. The problem being that with jousting if you move at least 10 feet before an attack you get bonus damage equal to the number of damage dice for that weapon. So a 2d8 striking lance would give +2 damage. then deadly comes in on a critical and adds one weapon damage dice.
1,The extra damage from jousting and deadly do not mix at all. ie 2d8 striking lance +4 for jousting, then deadly die added and nothing else.
2 the extra damage from jousting and deadly do mix and jousting damage is doubled working with the deadly die. ie 2d8 striking lance +4 for jousting, then deadly die added in and +2 for jousting from deadly die.
3 The extra damage from jousting and deadly do mix and jousting damage is not doubled working with the deadly die. ie 2d8 striking lance +4 for jousting, then deadly die added in and +1 for jousting from deadly die.

Jousting
The weapon is suited for mounted combat with a harness or similar means. When mounted, if you moved at least 10 feet on the action before your attack, add a circumstance bonus to damage for that attack equal to the number of damage dice for the weapon. In addition, while mounted, you can wield the weapon in one hand, changing the damage die to the listed value.

Deadly
On a critical hit, the weapon adds a weapon damage die of the listed size. Roll this after doubling the weapon’s damage. This increases to two dice if the weapon has a greater striking rune and three dice if the weapon has a major striking rune. For instance, a rapier with a greater striking rune deals 2d8 extra piercing damage on a critical hit. An ability that changes the size of the weapon’s normal damage dice doesn’t change the size of its deadly die.
I know this only matters for lance at the moment but I think other groups might have the same problem mine did and we could not find anyone talking about it.
I thank everyone for your input and I now understand i should make my build a bit more clear. First off i will be playing in mummy's mask. and told not to put stuff on a mule at this point, so i am guessing no overland travel for a bit. The next point is I have gotten burnt out on powerful characters and the class i am playing is commoner and i have gotten the gm to approve it. it is 15 point buy and i am trying to keep my stats as even but still functional as possible. all they while trying to find out when the other players find out i am a commoner. (note this is going to be a party of 4 or 5, and this group makes party's of 3 that steamroll things without talking about who is playing what class beforehand. so even with a commoner things will work out)
race human
stats are str 14, dex 14, con 13, int 13, wis 12, cha 10
feats are fast learner(to get both +1hp and +1 skill point) and improvisation
losing human skill points for Comprehensive Education to get all knowledge skills as class.(with my low skill points it is worth it as a trade to me)
traits blood of pharo for +1 will, +1 knowledge nobility and make it class. and Green Blood picking up create water
For my commoner one simple weapon i picked spear. I know long spear is also a good option but the group does not do well with reach and all the changes to ac that has. Also picked a 2 handed weapon as stats are low and need the extra damage, and i cant use a shield anyway.
For armor as a commoner is not proficient in any I chose one that has no armor check penalty and is in my price range
For gold my gm said commoner gets same money as monk so 1d6x10 I had him roll as i am making this character at home and he got a 6.
Now to go through the gear as you guys have done
spear thrower- I missed the short spear and not normal spear bit, so this is gone now.
sledgehammer-a draw for having it other then breaking things and putting pitons in things is it can be used as a makeshift earthbreaker and as I am proficient in only one simple weapon it is a nice backup that the other players wont question why I have the -4 non proficiency penalty.
Shovel- as we are in Osirion i feel there will be a fair amount of sand and having a shovel would be helpful.
Saw- it was 2 copper and only 2 lbs and might be useful i have no stronger reason then that.
Bear trap- idea is to set it in an area when we dungeon crawl and not to carry it around. also we have never played with it as a group so thought it would be fun. I do not plan on having it on my pack when we know combat is possible. freeing up the weight of having to carry it.
Ear trumpet-fair point, 5 gold does go a long way at level 1, will toss it.
Crowbar/kunai-I did not think of kunai, and if the dm says it fits in while still being in Osirion then i will go for it.
vermin repellent- Osirion and swarms of bugs come to mind and as a commoner i dont want to be targeted at level 1 when i think combat might happen.
torches- just in case no one else thinks of grabbing another light source when they make a character. will be the first thing to go depending on party.
Collapsible plank-it was suggested in the players guide for mummys mask so i thought why not, another item this group never uses and would be fun to see play. and can set aside as it is not something that should be needed in one action, and would not be a huge loss if stolen or destroyed.
backpack-I would go for masterwork backpack if it was not 50 gold, and will do so at first chance. but just something to keep stuff in.
Folding pole-fair point i do have a spear, only difference is how far they can poke. I will toss out.
rope- always have to have rope. as for climbing kit good idea but 80 gold.
Block and tackle-felt like a fun idea. might toss or keep depending on what else i could buy with that money.
water skin-just something to put water in. i do like the canteen idea but as a group we ignore any damage to gear. We dont see sunder on the player or dm side of things. so my water skin should be safe.
Pitons- at a price of 1 silver and .5 lbs vs 2 gold and 2 lbs for a kunai. at level 1 i will stick with pitons, and move on to kunai if available when we get money. Also i feel i need it to use block and tackle if we are in a stoney area.
So tossing out spear thrower, ear trumpet, and folding pole. that frees up 13 lbs and 6.2 gold.
with crowbar being replaced with kunai at same gold cost but 3 lbs lighter so 16 lbs of savings.
Tactic when not expecting combat but carrying everything else. drop backpack be it move, standard or full round.
Tactic when expecting combat in a dungeon crawl. set bear trap, put aside collapsible plank and block and tackle to free up 25lbs more, putting me into light load of 58lbs while using 56.52 lbs. not much wiggle room but it works for level one. and i can still toss torches out.
I know this is a strange build, but i am having fun even if it is just building it. Thank you once more.
So I am making a level 1 character for a new game and would like to hear what you all think is too much mundane gear on one person.
The character has strength of 14 so light load is 0-58 medium is 59–116 and heavy is 117–175
It is all the 10 lbs items that should not fit in a backpack are why I am bringing this up. And any advice on how to bring all of this stuff along you might have. The adventer starts in a city and is old dungeon crawling inside the city.
here is the gear layout
60 gold to start
10 for leather armor 15 lbs
2 for spear 6 lbs
whetstone 2 cp 1 lbs
spear thrower 1 gp 1 lbs
sledge 1 gp 10 lbs

same, just got two jobs at the same time, going from none. and now running a pbp for the first time when the gm left. it was worth a shot, this feels like something that can be much easier at the table
i am 90% sure that if i dont pin, then we are still grappled, and it would have to make a combat maneuver check to get out, or escape artist check to get out.
'i will find out what might be in the bush, be ready to attack'
Tronath goes to the bush in a defensive manner if at all possible, if not just walks to the bush to see if anything might be in there, that he cant see from afar.
move 30 feet closer to the cat. fire an arrow,
to hit:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20 damage:1d8 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 was going to do a running charge jump to grapple it but, jump is now dex based and i just lowered mine.... sad face.
getting my action out of the way early. just so i am clear just two foes right now, a cat and a wolf, that we can see is that right. standard action drink mutagen, move action drink potion of enlarge. move action because of trait
@dm just a guess but initiative? and if so i will roll for it now. also we might need you to roll for Laanrah just in case. initiative:1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 i think i am going last, although i would be impressed if someone somehow got lower then i just did.
Yes i agree we should be quite, Harlequin can you link us together in case we need to talk while we approach our prey? Remember leave at least one alive for study. has bow out, one hand has a potion of enlarge, third hand has mutagen, while we hunt down the were foxes.
perception:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14 know Nature:1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30 survival :1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 stealth:1d20 - 3 ⇒ (1) - 3 = -2hmm seems that -3 did not matter with a nat 1. @dm from the looks of things i am the only one that prepares spells,
Now geared with his four arms, a number of viles on his person as well as armor, one sword, and a fair sized bow on his back.
yes lets go, but remember i would like at least one of them still alive for testing. lets go hunting. but before we even find something to kill, we should know the role that each of us would play in the hunt, for me i can easy be a front attacker, or one that goes after runners. what about you guys? Ah it feels good to have my arms back, and it is amazing what i found out in a week here, i wounder what else i might find out with more time to study and testing
before we leave:
i talk to the witch about getting a formula book filled out putting spells in his book if possible, also find out how to grow my two extra arms in that week.
@gm, if you wanted to i am sure we can help you find out what history would still be around, we would need to know a starting point for when the peace started, and if we are at a our current real world date, or a time in the past or future, if only for a frame of reference. this idea is only to help you find out what history might exist in your world, or would allow to exist. but in the end it is just an offer that you can take or leave, after all you have played this setting in real life already, and have a number of things established.
@ gmhmm how would a were fox work, because i so want to do that. if you wanted i could build one out. in a few ways, as an example, funny thing is i once build up a were flying squirrel
Oh werefoxes that should be fun. What is this about other lands, oh seems we have more options open, what would be easier though bringing an army from the outside, or destroying something from within. both have there merits, that is assuming we could find anyone to join an army in the unknown lands. I think we should take a good week or so learning the history and other information of this world, after all we have to wait for the items to be made, and i am thinking some of us might bot be up to par without them. I know i need time to experiment to get my arms back. After a week or so i think we could easily go out for a walk in the forest and hopefully for me and the witch run into the werefoxes. Oh there i go rambling once more oh well.
I would like to point out, that we don't know what year equivalent it would be if it was indeed our earth, and if it is based on the same time as we live in today then the world has had peace for 2000 years meaning no England, of any real note. on the other hand it could be set 2000 years from now as well. but that is assuming this is our earth historically. the gm could have just put names on the map that would make it easier for us to know how far thing are apart and how big to think of the city's. as well as earth can just mean dirt or a place to grow things, solid ground. main point, for any campaign in a home brew setting, don't make assumptions and act as if they are right. it is the gm's world we are just living in it.
just a side thing, i think we should say what time zone we are in. for me i am in pacific time zone. just so we all know when we could expect others on.
Comes out of the pile of junk with some cloths for those that have not put any on. Look what i found, i hope it fits everyone. oh oh oh what kind of lycanthropes, are they wolf, lion, tiger bear, oh my that would be amazing. or are they a sort of loose tribe of many animal base forms. Oh the experimenting i could do with lots of base forms. he starts to drool as he puts on some pants.
i feel that you kind of are saying with the werewhatevers, oh here is a nice new shiny thing, and there are no negative consequences to doing it. only a -2 to charisma, and then i look at my party, all but me use charisma.... so i would be the only one that would take the curse and have it only effect a dump stat. grumble, i want that shiny thing too, but will have to wait and see how the people of the world treat it.
choke laugh choke. ok done laughing now, Maz Gin, here is the list of items i would like made, also i suggest that we all get a ring of sustenance, it will make it so we can move, work, and plan more and not have to worry about food, water, or sleep. well still a little bit of sleep but still.
to the witch
I did not say willing subjects, because i have almost never run into those. but any body's you might have around would do nicely. Hmm Lycanthropes, i have to ask if they are evil or not, because of this world, or are they just more in tune with the beast inside. oh oh oh oh, i had an idea, we might be able to weaponize them in some way, make a whole town into Lycanthropes. Tronath looks very exited at that thought, and then looks crestfallen Oh but then we will be found out quickly, it is something we would have to do to a number of population centers at once assuming it would work at all. and even then we would still be hunted down by a god, well that or make a world of hippy Lycanthropes, although that is funny in its own way. he smiles at the thought.
just some food for thought, but the world advances more rapidly when there is conflict, in this world of peace i am sure development has gone to a crawl. even more so if they keep there "moral values". this is a stagnate pond, and we will be the rocks tossed into it. hopefully big ones smiling at the end of his little talk.
now i am off to see what neat gear we might have on hand, call for me if you want to talk. waiting for others to respond to his words for a short time, then walks to the storage area, getting guidance if needed.
well that was odd having paizo be down for hours on my end at the very least.
Harlequin, for my experiments they take much time, pain and a fair amount of death, and for the most part i only make them work for me, i guess i could find ways to have others use my infusions but that will take time to learn how. and more then likely death. But sure if you want more arms i could try on you right now if you wanted, i would guess the possibility of success is less then 1%, seeing as how this is a new body, i lost much of my knowledge, in a strange new place, without my tools or texts, have no idea what sicknesses are on this world and how they might effect any operation, and the list goes on. but sure if you want more arms i am willing to help with that.
looking at the witch
might you have some subjects alive preferably for me to experiment on, i wish to know how this world might differ from my own, in how living things work, and what sicknesses there are. after all knowledge is power, and with that power i will grab more power when i get my arms back, and more knowledge from that and and ahahhaha Tronath starts to laugh uncontrollably for some time. while he walks over to what he would guess is a alchemy set or potion making bench.
Much appreciated Sicsivicus. Before we go on any farther lets find out what ideas and thoughts our new comrades might have to say, any thoughts so far on this as well witch. Laanrah, Merran i hope i just gave you the floor.
ok made it easyer to understand that my body is a half elf. also i dont understand how you get necromancy from extra arms, transmutation, alteration, conjuration, i can see all of those but not necromancy, also from what has been said people of this world are understanding and i could walk around with four arms a demon tail shooting fire from my mouth while naked and to me it seems they would just ask i put some pants on.
but that is my understanding of it so far.
I will toss out my thoughts. First we should see what we can do with our new body's, and find out how much of our old skills still remain, and the combinations we can pull off as a group, we might not relies on such acts but information on what we can pull off as a group will be important.
looking to the witch.
would it be possible to leave this house and hunt beasts and still come back, you said this is a magic house, so i am being careful.
looking to the group as a whole
Ah i forgot to say what i can do. I am a master alchemist and make a higher number of potions in a quick time, sadly they lose effect after one day, but they cost nothing to make is the flip side. I also am very good at cutting things up, mostly living things, if only i could show you....
looking in himself he finds a new sorse of power and taps into it. going into rage. Tronaths mussels bulge and his veins stick out, his fingers turn into claws.
Oh well that will do nicely, my skills in alchemy can make similar modifications to my body. now to test.
attacks the floor.
1d8 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
I think we have a fair amount of time to think of a plan of action, after all the game has just stared and it will take the crafters a fair amount of of time to make all our stuff, not to mention we have all been "alive" for less then a half hour at this point. we should let everyone say there own plan and then work from there, rather then going on just one persons plan, we might end up with a new one or a combination of a number of them.
ya i truly thought the orgy thing would be thrown out, only reason i mentioned it. also harlequin seems to keep leaving the room and still taking with everyone, but never mentions coming back in, or even letting response time happen. not trying to be mean or anything just thought i should point that out.
Well in any case i think we will be here for a some time while her crafters make our gear, so we have plenty of time to learn about this world and what our best coarse of action might be, no need to pick any one thing right now. it feels odd being a voice of reason and calm hmmm.
if possible tronath gets some items to write with and starts making a list of things he might want crafted while the others talk.
looking around at the group Tronath says
two things, one if we are going to work together we should know a bit about each other. and what we can do when all prepared. two who else got and wants to have a fun little orgy to celebrate this new life of ours, we are already naked after all. This sort of decadence is what this world needs. he smiles as he says the last part. showing his willingness to go on with his blunt suggestions.
it will be interesting to see what such unions make if anything
before anyone jumps on me about that last part, we are all naked, and evil, and have hot females in the room. so why not just say it bluntly even if nothing happens :p
At the mention of a lab Tornath runs out of the room. Then comes back in sheepishly
Where is the lab agine? Or should i wait for the others? oh a map where are we on this map anyway?
Looking very exited at the thought of a new lab to play with, he is practically bouncing up and down.
Oh ya i can help with any potion crafting that might need doing, but i will need someone else to cast the spells, or get a new formula book for me, i take it that there is a spell library as well? Tornath looks hopefully at the woman.
Tronath listens to the others talking, trying to understand all this talk of only one god and good world.
well at least when i get out of here i can easily find more experiment subjects.
What stands out on this world, would our tailed friends stick out how about our half orc, are there beasts that attack anymore. and where are my arms! shaking both his arms at the mention of missing arms.
so much information to absorb.
looking at Laanrah
Oh you are pretty but i bet i could make you look better if i had my tools, well that or kill you but that would be progress, what do say pretty one
Breathing his first breath after a unknown time has passed. It seems eather i died or someone found my back up plan sooner then i thought. and wanted to exparement.
taking a look around he sees that there are other body's tied up and the one with wings, as well as the arcane markings
know arcana:1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17 hmm seems that there are others in here as well, and it looks like one of my old experiment tables is what we are all on. interesting to be on the other side of the knife. No need to rush getting to us we will be lying around for some time. what is wrong with my voice, it should not sound like this
tronath starts to test his body out and finds it longer and stronger then his old form. As well as the fact that he is missing two of his arms.
this is odd it seems i am in some sort of human blooded form, much stronger then my old body, but with a little bit of experimenting i can push its limits to what is possible, oh that will be fun. but first i need my arms back, they might not have come with me to this new form but i will get them back.
Tronath looks to the ground, and at his now form.
why is the ground so far away ahhh ahhh, ok calm down... hmm seems this new form is strong. Bah only two arms i will have to fix that as soon as i can. but with this strength hmm i might be able to push this body's limits even higher still
the blond half elf laughs as if he head a good joke.
in his old life, he started out a healer, but as he kept healing people he found that it would never end. so he started to try to find ways that people would not need to be healed as much, to better them as it were, from simple changes in diet to overhauls on there whole body. as he tried to make peoples lives better he tried to learn from the dead, but he found that was not enough and started to experiment on those willing to help his research. poor souls who suffered from painful sickness, and this was one of the last options. soon he ran out of those that were willing, and so he started to take people that would not be missed. till he found out that he needed healthy people to see if his new experiments would make them resistant to sickness of all types as well as harm. as time went by he became more interested in the process of his experiments and lost sight of his goal of helping all people. he needed more and more subjects to feed his growing curiosity on what you could do to a living form. while he traveled quite far to keep his subject acquisition a quite thing, it latter caught up to him, and he was tried for his crimes and executed.
he thought this might happen one day so he put together a back up plan, he made an extract that was a copy of his personalty, while it did not have as much power as he did, he knew one day that if he would fall, he would live once more in some way shape or form at some point in time.
