What Pan said. I stopped drinking the milk when 4E was released.

When DnD came out with 4E, that's when I chose my favorite edition and stuck with it. Yep, WotC lost me as a consumer with that edition.

Science Fiction setting: I'd go the Sith route in the Star Wars universe, no question about it. Of course I'd have to change my name from The Mighty Arch Lich Thoth-Amon, to the Mighty Arch Sith Thoth-Amon. Heck, the two names are so close, I probably could save myself some imperial credits and not have my holochecks updated.

Fantasy setting: Either old-school WFRP or an old-school DnD setting - can you guess which by my name and spelling?

Of course, being an immortal epic level Lich, I can have my cake and eat it too - existing in both universes.

Being alive is sooo overrated.

As a player, i love it. Real risk = real fun. This formula, i've found in my 30+ years of gaming, has always worked out best. Nowadays, when a DM tells me that death is near impossible, I go running to another campaign. To me, it's like telling someone that you will be winning the game before it even begins, and who wants to play that?

In the last few years, especially, it has & is a really strange thing to run into such a large number of gamers that have never died, only ever retiring a character/s when the campaign/s has been retired.

When it comes to WFRP, you an pretty much always count me in. Is this a location-based game or an online game? Which edition will you be using? I'm great with 1st & 2nd editions, but hold no interest for the 3rd edition.

I look forward to hearing from you,

One more thing: I hate wotc.

I love WotC. They created 3rd edition of D&D, which I had countless happy hours playing. They also made almost all the monsters in the Monster Manual open content, and added a swathe more to open content when Necromancer asked if they could incorporating them in the Tome of Horrors.

They have a vast amount of intellectual property; I'm not going to complain if they keep some of it, or even most of it, to themselves. They didn't have to make any of it open.

It's more that just that. Besides, I am not talking about the year 2000. I've hated what they have become since coming out with 4e.

Owlbears are specifically made open content in the 3.5 SRD.

Several monsters aren't, however. Beholders, Mind Flayers, Githyanki/zerai, Displacer Beasts, Umber Hulks, Carrion Crawlers (who would have thought), Kuo Toa are all closed content and property of WotC.

I love all these monsters, and still use them in my home games.

He is damn good with a sword. In one of the novels, he defeats 7 master swordsmen. In many others, he is a master archer, and dagger thrower.

Hello Paizophiles,

i got a philosophical question here: is summoning devils/demons/evil outsiders an evil act by and of itself? The wizard in my group is inclined to summon evil creatures to do his bidding (mainly fighting other evil creatures).
He is of LN alignment and argues that these monsters are not actually existing (pure energy) and he has total control over them and they are fighting other monsters of the same kind.
I am interested in the Pros and Cons. Go, argue.

Thanx in advance.

p.s. The player gets the impression, that evil outsiders are far more versatile and powerful and diverse than good outsiders (a ruther powergamerish opinion) and is oblivious to the paladin´s objections.

As a DM, my ruling would depend on intent.

How long does it take to read the first and last page? I say NO with moderation. The mere fact that there may be - lets say - 1000+ posts tells me that many on this site find the subject matter interesting, and they are showing their interest by participating.

Seriously, there's that goblin baby.

Some day, it will grow up to be a CE menace of local level 1 Commoners. A terrorist. Think Al-qaeda, sans the brains and with more torches. And we're supposed to fight such evil wherever it shows, right? That's what a proper Neutral Good would do.

It's lying on the ground, defenseless. My armored boot hovers over its tiny, football-shaped head.

If I crush it now, am I Evil? 1/10th of Evil? Chatoic Neutral with occasional "twitch"? Just fine? Or just a curious Gnome?

Of course, this isn't a serious thread, and shouldn't be taken so, or Mikaze will run in and start explaining that I should take care of that Goblin and rise him to become a LG Cleric of Iomedae... ;-)

It comes down to perspective. I'm sure that Goblins see humans as evil, too.

Everyone's definition of "unnecessarily" is going to be different. We've found a level that we're comfortable with, and I don't think we plan on changing it because some people think we're showing too much.

And for the record, my wife is totally fine with all the iconic art. Of course, she is a bikini designer for female bodybuilders, so perhaps her idea of "appropriate amount of exposed skin in a public place" is atypical....

Don't change a thing, Sean.

Balodek wrote:

Here's a question, related I hope. What do you do if a character is dead set on killing themselves? Not in a "I charge everything" way, but more like this example.

I had a player who wanted to swim across the water in a cavern. The bridge was right next to her, and 3 characters had already crossed it (in fact the whole party crossed it on their way to the dragon). I told her the current looked very strong and that she shouldn't try to swim it. I told her this 3 times and finally she just jumped in. Failed her swim check, sucked under, swept into the next cavern, grappled by a roper and killed horribly.

In this situation, would you save her or not?

Related to earlier posts, most of my players have learned that if they split from the party it may go badly for them. Not because I will try to kill them or can't handle it, but because there is strength in numbers, whether you're playing Pathfinder, Deathwatch, or Battle Cattle.

p.s. Ok I have never played Battle Cattle but it's just too funny not to include.

That's a great question, Balodek.

I never let players play their characters not in character. Meaning: I don't allow characters in a game do things they would obviously not do. Problem solved.

I have my doubts about you.

I think you are taking this discussion awfully personal.

Basically, it comes down to this: Heroes in stories run away and/or get captured all the time. You don't like that, so you don't play it like that. Fine. Others do.

This is NOT a roleplay vs rollplay debate, no matter how much you want to turn it into one.

This is what happens when a system strives to be "fair and balanced."

When the proverbial pendulum swings back the other way and gamers once again realize that the fun in gaming is not in "fair and balanced," but rather, "unfair and unbalanced," then I will play that edition, until then, I will stick to the old-school games. And yes, I do realize that "fair and balanced" makes gaming companies alot of dough in rulebooks.

Side note: I have played in numerous 3.+(includes Pathfinder) and 4E games, and I have noticed a disturbing gaming quality with gamers: The idea of retreat never enters their minds. It's an amazing thing to see. If retreat is necessary, they all scream that the game isn't "fair and balanced."

To the originator of this thread: I do understand your decision to walk away.

I've said it before and I will say it again: Paizo needs to run it all. Seems, they are the only ones with their fingers on the proverbial pulse of gamers.

If I were to win a *huge* lottery, I would do two things with the winnings:

1) Get the television series of Firefly going again. We need more episodes.
2) Buy out WotC and give it/put it under Paizo's control. They know what the gamers want.

WotC4E version of DnD: It wouldn't surprise me if they updated. Only thing I like about 4E is that the edition does pull in more gamers into our hobby, and yes, I do respect that fact.

Pathfinder: It's the true 4E, IMO. Why? Pathfinder still carries the DnD feel when playing; whereas, WotC4E does not. Will Pathfinder come out with a newer edition? You bet! Soon? No!

Note: Before anyone hallucinates some flames coming from my post, and to make absolutely clear, that was neither my intent, nor are they my feelings about the aforementioned edition. Just a personal observation from personal experience.

Personal dream of mine: May Paizo obtain ownership of WotC one day. I trust Paizo to handle it right, for I truly believe that Paizo listens and truly cares about its customers. There track record proves it time and time again.

I've been looking for a beer/s that one can see it completely loaded with gunk (technical beer term) when looking into the glass. I saw an example of it on a show entitled: Dhani Tackles the World. I believe this particular episode either took place in Ireland or Scotland.

To me, Pathfinder, or 3.75, is what 4E should have been but fell sort of that goal. WoTC 4E is not really dnd, but rather something with the name given to it.

In short, Pathfinder is the latest incarnation of DnD; whereas, 4E is not. Nothing against 4E, mind you; it just doesn't give off the dnd flavor and feel that IS dnd to me.

Note: this is my personal opinion from over 30 years of gaming, and in no way should be construed as anything other than my own opinion.
