LOL...reminds me of an old Monty Python Flying Circus joke...

"I've heard of unisex, but I've never had it".

Ûzorgráng wrote:
That real life stuff gets in the way of all the fun! :P

Yes it certainly does!! :-)

Thanks for your patience with me folks. Life has been a little crazy recently!

Julius Miller wrote:

With a louder but still normal voice:
"Thorgrund, you want to gather some wood with me? We need some smaller piece of wood and it is good education to leave the wood for the next group."

"Oh...um...yes, good idea Julius..." says Thorgrund. As the pair heads out, Thorgrund scans for any tracks that may seem out of place.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Survival: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

If Thorgrund finds any goblinoid tracks, additional bonus applies to both.

Bear with me guys. Finishing 12 hour ER shift. I hope to post later tonight (after midnight EST)

Looking back and forth from Uzorgrang and Julius, Thorgrund seems to fume for a few seconds, then winks at each and smiles broadly.

"Just having some fun, lads. I'll do what's needed."

Julius Miller wrote:

Julius smile:

"I think that Ûzorgráng can be the single warrior protecting our caravan, while we can play the part of merchants and muleteers."

Thorgrund scowls at Julius, sneering "Oh, I see...let the dwarf be the muleskinner, eh? That's what dwarves do, right? Well, let me tell you something lad, my axe don't really discriminate where she gets her blood from..."

He tightens the grip on his axe, the sound of cracking knuckles the only thing breaking the awkward silence.

Ûzorgráng wrote:
I'm handling it like PFS. Half your die type plus 1 plus any CON bonuses. That works out like the long term average anyway.

Thanks, man. I'll work it that way for now.

How should we handle hit points per level?

DM Mode Activated wrote:
between all the great posts and enthusiastic training I want everyone to lvl up to 2. great job gang.

Woot!

Ûzorgráng wrote:
"Good! It is also useful to have several weapons, like you and I. Because things often go wrong in battle."

Thorgrund chuckles. "If things go wrong, I'll most likely be dead already..."

"But you are right, Uzorgrang. I have my crossbow as well, but I mainly use that for hunting."

Thorgrund decides to practice with his axe versus a large tree trunk spiked to the ground. The fact that it is made up to look like an armored warrior is irrelevant in his mind.

waraxe slash: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
waraxe backhand slash: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
waraxe overhead smash: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
shield bash: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Clearly, Thorgrund needs to get more practice in order to use the axe and shield together in battle. While comfortable with Vengryn, he still needs to build strength in his arm to be able to deliver a devastating backswing attack. While he can still get his shield up to defend even after attempting a bash, he realizes he needs to become less dependent on being mostly right arm dominant.

Thorgrund watches the others for a bit, even admiring the quickness of some with the scimitar.

"Moving quick-like is well and good, but sometimes its just easier to walk right up to yer enemy, and smack him right down on his head..." says Thorgrund, hefting his waraxe.

He looks at the others for a few seconds to see how they react, then guffaws loudly.

"Bah...just kiddin'. A true warrior tries to size up his enemy before charging at him...or her, gods forbid."

Thorgrund listens to the others, nodding in agreement. He is encouraged by the enthusiasm of the young ones, even moreso that they want to train before heading into what could be a very dangerous set of circumstances.

"Good. I do need to practice myself. Trying to learn to use the shield and the axe at the same time is taxing..."

Ûzorgráng wrote:

Ûzorgráng is getting somewhat bored with all this talking and gesturing, which seems to be going well. He thinks so, anyway. He casually leans over slightly to Thorgrund and whispers:

"Do you want to make a friendly bet about who can thump the most bandits?"

Thorgrund smiles slightly, and whispers back at the hulking half-orc.

"Done, lad. You may as well pay me now..." he chuckles.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Thorgrund stands like a rock, unmoving, but very aware of his surroundings. Careful not to make direct eye contact, he attempts to size up the Baron, taking in to account his youth.

Perception check:

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21

I'm here...attending disaster preparedness conference today and tomorrow. Will post soon!

Thorgrund graciously greets each in turn, although he seems flustered when talking to Shyr.

He joins the others, listening intently to Julius and his proposal.

"Well spoken, lad. I've learned from guarding caravans that it's easier to die alone than with comrades watching your back. I am only slightly familiar with these northern mountains, having been a scout for some mercenaries a few months back."

He pauses, furrowing his brow.

"As for the bandits, yes, I think we should go after them first. Once they are dealt with, the Baron can free up other resources to aid us if need be. Especially if this goblin tribe decides to become more aggressive."

Thorgrund smiles broadly now, flicking a finger at the blade of his axe, which rewards him with a fine sounding "gong".

"Besides, Vengryn here is getting a wee bit thirsty..." he says, winking at Uzorgrang.

Thorgrund downs the last bit of ale in his mug, gathers his axe, and proceeds to follow Uzorgrang to meet the others.

Ûzorgráng wrote:

Ale in hand, he turns to the others and, pointing to the ale-nursing dwarf in the corner, he says "Hullo! That dwarf yonder. Yes, the one with the fancy axe. I'll wager he's handy in a fight. Maybe he'll be friends with us!" And without another word, walks straight up to said Dwarf.

"Nice axe you have there" Says Ûzorgráng, in fluent Dwarven to the Dwarf, as he casually sits in a nearby chair that groans with the combined weight of Ûzorgráng and all his gear.

The Half-Orc unceremoniously inhales his own pint, then daintily wipes the foam off his mouth with a spotless handkerchief that he tucks back into a pocket.

Without skipping a beat, he continues, in Dwarven: "Me, I like chains. Handy against bandits, but bandits are flimsy. No challenge. I hear there's good fights and good money near here. That's why we're here. What? Those four humans standing there gawking? They're my friends, they are. I like them. I'm they're body guard, I am! Why are they staring at us like that? They probably like your axe too. How about you? What brings you here?"

Startled slightly from his musings as he nurses his ale, Thorgrund peers up at the huge half-orc looming over, clearly impressed with his grasp of the dwarven language.

"Chains, eh?" he asks back in dwarvish. "My folk are unfortunately not blessed with the height to use a chain like that, but I can tell you that my axe has ruined plenty of days...". He laughs heartily, hoping the chair the half-orc has taken will hold up.

"Thorgrund Stormcloud, at your service. I'm looking for work, oddly enough. Rumor has it that the local lord is looking for help, and I figure my axe and I can be useful." He picks up the axe, laying it on the table. "I call her "Vengryn", which means "Vengeance" in my tongue. She has saved my life plenty of times."

I figure once the group arrives at the inn (providing they get past the gatehouse) ;-) - Thorgrund will be in the common room.

Uzorgrang, post what you did above in the Gameplay thread, and we can go from there...nice, btw!

They can meet Thorgrund at an inn in the town. Seeing him in a corner, nursing a mug of ale, his rune engraved axe leaning against the table...

Sorry for the delay guys. Two 14 hour shifts in a busy ER makes me sleepy. Got a few days off, so I can get right to it!

DM, I can jump in when you drop the hint. Perhaps Thorgrund is returning from a job, and runs into the group (maybe once they get into some trouble?

Just a thought. And thank you for including me.

Feel free to PM me if needed.

I believe this dwarf ranger is pretty much ready to go, besides totaling encumbrance and leftover cash.

DM Mode Activated wrote:

OK

Thorgrund you were right on both counts. I missed the trait and the -2 to chr so that is fine.

No worries! I appreciate the 2nd set of eyes to make sure I didn't mess up.

Background is coming shortly.

DM Mode Activated wrote:
Thorgrund max starting gold is fine but you have overspent and I believe you have 22 pts. spent.

If we are building from 20 pts, his Cha of 6 offsets to bring the total to 20. Also, the racial bonuses and penalties are added to the final scores.

He also has the Rich Parents trait (if you allow it). Starting wealth increases to 900 gp. I will review the gear to make sure it all adds up.

Thanks for reviewing the sheet! I'll let you know when I think he's ready.

I think I'm ready to jump into a game. Consider me interested.

Thorgrund here is a ranger (skirmisher) specializing in axe and shield. I still need to tweak his background, but the crunch is pretty much done. I need another trait. I'll check some out soon.

Basically, he's a front-line warrior. I envision him with the classic "grizzled dwarf" schtick, but with a awkwardness with the ladies (any race). He also tends to sing old dwarvish songs loudly in combat, and not well either.

Interested. I have to upgrade his stats, but I hereby present Thorgrund Stormcloud, dwarf ranger (skirmisher).

Have a great game, guys!

Thanks to you, GM, for your consideration.

Looks like interest may be waning. I'm going to go over the submissions tonight and if I have any questions I'll send you a PM. Barring an avalanche of submissions tomorrow I'll announce the party tomorrow at noon. Thank you all for taking the time and putting forth the effort in making your submissions.

Good luck everyone!

<crosses fingers>

I think hes finally done. Now...we wait!

Aaaannndddd...just realized I need to have how/why Thorgrund knows the good Professor...coming soon. <insert forehead slap here>

Eren Denollar wrote:

My apologies sir dwarf. ;)

No worries! Nicely done with the list.

@ Eren - its "Thorgrund", BTW.

Alrighty...background is done, just need to calculate encumberance numbers.

Now, we wait! Best of luck to everyone, as there are many very good submissions. I don't envy your job in deciding, Mr. Michaels!

Working on background. Should be finished later tonite.

Doren Redeemed wrote:
Interested in joining do have a question about how we spend starting cash. You ok with us buying potions starting out?

I hope he is, cause I got extra cash from the campaign trait I took, and bought a masterwork weapon!

Looks like, with varying levels of completeness:

Ancestor Oracle
Dwarf Ranger (melee)
Human Sorceror
Human Barbarian
Human Tetori Monk
Human Alchemist
Human Rogue
Aasimar Paladin

Pretty good mix of talents. I love to see how a team will coalesce.

I'm currently at work, so updates won't happen until MUCH later.

Updating when I can. Essentially I'm going for a front-line ranger, so more combat oriented. Eventually will get a wolf companion.

He knows the Professor since he was hired to guide him to dig sites, and to act as bodyguard on other occassions.

Applying with Thorgrund, dwarf ranger (skirmisher). I'll be finishing soon.

Too much on the proverbial plate now, so I'm gonna bow out. Best of luck guys!

Here we go:

4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 1, 4) = 12 = 11
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 2, 6) = 15 = 13
4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 3, 2) = 10 = 9
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 5, 6) = 20 = 17
4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 4, 6) = 15 = 13
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 1) = 8 = 7

Hmm...could still do ranger, just gotta figure out which stats take a hit.

Film @ 11...

Interested. This dwarf ranger was made for another game. I'm currently @ work so I'll roll stats later tonite.

Best of luck to those chosen! Thank you for the consideration, DM Kyle.

I'll be watching this one.

Once you create the new alias, on the right-hand side near the top of the page you will see a link called Edit My Profile. Click it, then cut-n-paste what you have in your original post (under Tie My Shoelace), and scroll down to the Save Changes button. Viola!!

Hope that helps...oh, and welcome to the nicest messageboards in the world! (I do mean nicest people!)

Fixed a few errors, and should be able to fill out a little more background later today, plus a few more details (encumberance, load carried). He's essentially good to go.

Best of luck to all!!

Thanks for the list compile, Crusty! It helps visualize party roles better.

Thorgrund buddy! thought i reckognised that name.

Too bad that dwarf campaign didn't work out.
Was looking forward to being a dwarf wizard :P

Yeah, me too! I kept checking for updates, but nothing. Too bad...

Anyhoo, good luck in this one!

For the record, I think Thorgrund is more combat oriented, being of the skirmisher archetype ranger. Maybe I'm wrong...
