The sergeant pauses.
"You're good people. All of you. It's going to take a day to organise transport. How about we meet up for one last round of drinks." he smiles wanly "I've got to do a pile of paperwork before I can leave. Not sure what they're going to do if I don't though - fire me?"
"Anyway, go on in."

"I've quit. Lieutenant's waiting for you when you're ready." he says brusquely. "Go on in. Any heat, blame it on me."

At Spooky's
"So. That's the report."

"Turns out 'Hossiter' couldn't take on any shape but that of her mortal form. She did agree to some quick disguise - not sure how convincing it was, but it seemed reasonable. We all kept an eye out, but no-one seemed surprised."

We took the bodies - sorry, the scrap - back here for examination. It was pretty clear the two killed - uh, destroyed - in the basement had been decapitated, then dragged into a pile, partially disassembled, covered in oil and burned. Looks to have been done by a large, sharp scythe. Given what the gardener did to the manservant it attacked when it was leaving, it's the primary suspect."

Looks like it used the rare metals from their construction to lure the ooze-things out of their nice warm cage. We stopped it opening the Hound's cage - I've put a note in Diene's record about that. Found out later there's some sort of last ditch trap. If the circle is broken the fire that started was supposed to ash the whole zoo instantly. Someone needs to talk to them about their security."

"I'm resigning."

"It happened again. At least no-one died - but Constance only just made it. Magic kept her alive, but it couldn't grow her skin back properly. Thirus nearly died. Diene nearly died."

He sighs "I thought I was making a difference in this damn city. The Law might have trouble, but..." he sighs again "I've been cut off. Archon was pretty clear what he expected, and I said no. Not even sure if I was right. I'm going back to the Worldwound. Thirus has volunteered to come with me - I think he's decided a paladin code doesn't really work in Qantium."

"The others are going to come in in a moment, give their thoughts. I'd prefer not to be here when they do. They're good. You've got my recommendations."

"Can't say it's been a pleasure - but you've been a good boss. When I worried about the shades of grey that make up this damn city, you were always one of the whites. Good Luck. I might be heading into an abyssal invasion, but I think you need it more."

The Sergeant barrels in, intending to bowl over the construct.
AoO attack: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (2) + 16 = 18 damage: 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (1, 4) + 6 = 11
CMB: 1d20 + 2 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 2 + 9 = 19
Instead the construct swings as he leaps - and both slide past each other in a comedy of errors.

The Sergeant pounds past the fight to Mia.

The Sergeant screams, and charges into the Mouther, ramming it with his shield
attack: 1d20 + 2 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 2 + 9 = 26 damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

The Sergeant roars and races forward to the start of the glass.

Mia:
Mia: Sure. I make you 2-3 rounds ahead.

Castor: Really? 32? Go read the damn entry.
"I... I don't know." The sergeant sounds dispirited "Can't let them free... Sure. Castor, you've got command for now. I'm not in a fit state to lead. Sorcerors can have temporary command during emergencies, right?"

Meanwhile the Sergeant nods to Castor in acknowledgement, walking closer to him and talking - making it harder to follow the argument.
"I'm caught between my Oaths. I knew there was bad in the city. I thought I was helping make it better. But I can't defend a man who is imprisoning Celestial Name. We've been through a lot, Castor. But this is my Faith." he sighs "I'm going to have to resign. You ready for this?"

Castor:
Obviously if he resigns, he will not be caught between two oaths. You can try to talk him out of it, but if he resigns his only oath is going to be the one to Iomedae.

"Let me go Diene. That's an order."

The Sergeant struggles a bit, but is obviously held firm.
He says a few words in Celestial, then continues
"... Lieutenant in Iomedae's Archon Legion. Helped me back when I was fighting for Iomedae against the demons of the the Worldwound."

The Sergeant looks more closely at the figure
"What? Why are you here?"

channel heal: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 1) = 12
"Well done." The sergeant nods at the new guards, his symbol of Iomedae flooding them all with healing energy. "Let's see what we've got."

longsword: 1d20 + 9 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 9 - 4 = 19damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
"Get us an invite!" he roars, backing away as he swings defensively - and connects "Look at me, construct! I'm walking into your room!"

[biger]Okay, Castor and Diene are up[/bigger]

"All right. Everyone grab a few breaths, then we head back in."
I believe the plan was to go up?

"Let's head out. Get some air. Exchange notes." orders the Sergeant.
Short break to check for dissent. Would like to get the group back together.

The Sergeant seems on the verge of countermanding, then pauses
"I don't like splitting up in here. Diene - you even suspect something's happening, get back down here straight away"

The sergeant nods "Alright. We'll go in, Quench the basement. Let's get some wet cloths, like Castor suggested.
Anyone need to do any last actions before entering?

given what's happened to the yard, there is a negligible chance it will spread in the current conditions. If the wind picks up, or there is an explosion, or the building collapses then it might still spread.

Puffing a little, the Sergeant arrives in time to hear Thirus.
"If anyone's going in to a burning sorcerer academy with an aberration collection, then we're going in together!" he glances over at Diene, who seems to be stemming a magical civil war "Well. Maybe we leave her out here for crowd control." Gives Diene a reason to hold off entry till she's back

Calling everyone together he summarises
"Right. We need to know who's still inside. We need to know if there's anything dangerous inside. We do need to know where the fire started, and if anyone saw what started it - but that can wait. If we need to go in, we need protection from the fire, but more importantly protection from the smoke. Any answers?"

CMB: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15

"Yeah! Nobody go in till I get there!" The sergeant yells at departing backs.
Turning to Isama he holds out a wand.
"Quench. Command phrase is 'one-two-seven-seven-four'"

Isama:

@Isama: Tenements tend to be named for local dignitaries, so while it is a Mwange name, there's no guarantee that there's a lot of Polyglot speakers. I like the idea though, so let's say a number of Mwange immigrants have made the same mistake ;)
Also, on that profession roll, I reckon you'd remember that the Sergeant should have a scroll of Phantom Chariot. Expensive though.

The Sergeant winces at De Morgan's cutting comments "One more still coming in, sir" he reports.

The sergeant nods, and heads out to the waiting room\recreational area.

"Alright. Everyone head in, interview starts now. Ophelia, Castor - with me."

The sergeant ushers everyone in to the room where the masked Spooky stands silently waiting, silhouetted against the sunlight from the enormous window at the end of the room.

Intimidate DC 15:
This is a room designed to intimidate. There's a subtle shift in the room, with smaller furniture and a lower roof near the window. Spooky just standing there is probably also designed to be intimidating, especially with the sun behind him making it hard to look.

Knowledge Local DC 10:
You've researched Spooky of course. Harsh but fair, he was a bit of a hero back in his day. Lost his face to something years ago, and has worn an enchanted mask since then.

Grimacing at the reminder, Sergeant Valdemar speaks
"Sir, I understand if you want to replace me. I should never have let the kid go in."

"Five, sir. Some dwarven investigator, that crazy woman in red, some kid, a druid, and DeMorgan of course."

Sergeant Valdemar enters. The grizzled guard looks briefly apologetic at the otherwise empty office. The Lieutenant is well known for his love of his morning coffee - and he never drinks with anyone around.

"Sorry to bother you sir, but they're all here now."

The Sergeant channels again heal: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 4) = 6 and Sefu and Laurestine find the strength to stand again.
"I'm nearly spent!" shouts the Sergeant "What's the plan?"

Not quite sure where his target is, the Sergeant brandishes his holy symbol and calls upon divine retribution!
channel: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 1) = 10
will save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
The vampire screeches again, this time momentarily catching fire.

"Waiting for the sun to set, so it can run." the Sergeant adds to Ophelia's guesses.
"Need to bring the little bloodsucker to us."

Stealth roll please Ophelia!
Castor: I know that wand might look weak, but it's stopped me doing Dominate soooo many times. They know you've been using it, and what it does.
Sergeant Valdemar lashes out with a stream of searing light
searing light attack: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 2 - 4 = 0 - but is forced to abort his attack at the last minute or risking burning through Ophelia.

Sarge closes as far as he can, then calls out
"Iomedae! Lend us your light!"
A momentary pulse of light bursts from his shield

rolls:
channel to hurt undead dc13: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 4) = 10spawn save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
and the spawn stumbles back, charred and blackened... but still very much animate.

Round 2!
Init order: Laurestine, Master Vampire, Castor, Ophelia, Spawn, Sarge

The Sergeant nods
"Well done! If that is the little bloodsucker's coffin he'll have to go back to it if we discorporate him."
"Okay. I checked the floor below this one. Let's go up..."

"You're clear? Did you find anything?" casting a quizzical look at the chest under Ophelia's arm "Looting?" he asks in disbelief.

The sergeant thinks for a second.
"No, go up with Ophelia. I'll come up with stakes in a few seconds."
Okay - who is heading up the stairs? What are other people doing?Conscious that we seem to have slowed down, so I'd like to get the speed up again.

The Sergeant quickly uses the wands on the bodies. He stops briefly at the second
"Mera" he says, sadly, "We were in a squad together..." shaking his head he is again all business "No time for that. They've stripped her - that means there's a second set of wands somewhere."
"We're burning up charges on Castor's wand. If they're starting to wake up, we need to move."
Looking around he orders Laurestine "Bar the door, then take the others and go check up these stairs. As soon as I'm done here I'll join you."
"Ophelia; take point, they don't seem as keen on attacking you."

Swearing slightly, the sergeant finally draws the correct wand, and starts to sanctify the bodies.

Players are up

The Sergeant hands out a stake to Ophelia and Laurestine, then digs into a sheathe and pulls out the wand of gentle repose issued by the city.
see here

"Do you have this?" he asks of the team, unable to get closer to Sefu's struggle.

Players are up

init: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5

"He's right... but let's get the girl stashed and the stakes ready. Laurestine, can you tell the people outside to hold that fleeing civilian? Not sure if the mind control is going to come back."

knowledge:nobility or profession:guard DC 15:

Congratulations! You know enough about the political situation you've found yourself in to be able to work out how to maximize your Reputation.

Vampire (spawn or not) captured +4
Vampire (spawn or not) killed +5
Mortal Citizen freed of mind control +2
Mortal Citizen killed while attacking guards -1
Found guilty of killing a citizen (except in defence of self or others) -50.
Vampires escape building and start this up again -30
Calling in backup -20

Yes, politically the city would prefer not to be handed the problem of unwillingly turned vampire citizens. If they 'died while being arrested' that would be convenient... but if you're caught killing them when you could capture them heads will roll.

Any questions?

"Well done peop...team. If this is it we don't need backup, but we should probably alert HQ. Can someone write a note?"

The Sergeant makes short work of a chair, turning out another pair of stakes.

remember you have the self animating note that turns into a construct origami bird
@Ophelia: Sorry, couldn't resist ;P

"Sefu! Stand down!" yells Sergeant Valdemar as Sefu tries to stop Laurestine.

The sergeant nods "Do it"
5 rounds for prep, then the sarge deactivates the alarm and opens the door.

The Sergeant starts casting.
Castor, state your count (in rounds) before reading the following

Sergeant casts (in order):

Magic Vestment: already cast.
1: Shield of Faith
2: Divine Favor
3: Resistance (self)
4: Resistance (Laurestine)
5: Resistance (Sefu)
6: Resistance (Ophelia)
7: Resistance (Castor)
8: Guidance (Self)
9: Guidance (Sefu)

Laurestine:

Just the alarm Mera put on the door

The Sergeant pauses, grabs the papers and reads quickly.
"Replacing Tieszla? Looks like you've got good timing - at least for us."
Gesturing for the others to gather around he summarises for the new guy
"We've got people going into that six story building there" he points "And not coming out. That includes Sergeant Mera. I've sent a Guardsman to go get the men to set up a Cordon."
"Castor says there's at least seven enchantment auras. That means there could well be more blocked by distance or stone. Ophelia has information there's a minimum of nineteen - probably more - civilians present."
"Castor's going to hit us all with some sort of protection against enchantment. Central's got to refund that in a situation like this."
"Mera put an alarm on the front door, but I know the password. I think we go in that way. Any trouble and we break for the door, set off the alarm to call for help. Don't be a hero."
"Remember there's civilians, enchantments, and at least one guard. Try to use non-lethal takedowns if possible. If Mera's been enchanted then we need to deal with her first - she got to Sergeant by being professional and dangerous, so watch yourself."
"I know some of you have preparations to do. Anything going to last longer than a minute I'd use now... but if this is just some sort of sleep aura we're not going to get refunds on combat enhancements."
"Castor; you've got the wand. Count us down."

"Kaz? Kaz. Go get the other sergeants. Tell them we need a cordon. Now."

Looking at the door "Mera's put her alarm stone on it. If anyone had opened this door, we'd know about it."

"Castor - can you check for other exits?"

Stopping to look up and down the street the Sergeant hoists his shield - the holy symbol of Iomedae all but glowing on it - and says a word or two. A moment later and the glow moves to his armour.

You'd all know Abel casts Magic Vestment before he goes into a dangerous situation

The Sergeant takes a little longer to get down than the others, mostly due to the extra weight he's carrying; heavy armour, a shield and a gut bought on by twenty years on the job eating stall-bought food and living out of the station house instead of getting married.

He clinks down the stairs, Iomedan longsword out already.

As soon as he hears the story he starts running.

Hmm - I'm a little worried that we've lost 2 of 5 players so early, and that we've lost a primary combatant and a healer.
I think we'll need to recruit, but for now the Sgt can be the 5th level cleric out of the NPC codex.
I'll use this old alias of mine for it.

Edit: Changing name and picture

Okay, changed alias

I will most likely choose Zohan or Abel haven't totally decided on the rest yet.

If there's too much overlap mechanically I think we're prepared to diverge. If there's too much thematically then I did toss up originally being Sorceror, and working in a dislike of stuffy dogma-ism of predjudiced wizards. If it is that two full arcane casters is one too much I understand... in which case if that's true I'll bow out in favour of Lord Zohan, as this is only his second character alias, and I remember how hard it is to get into games when you're new.

if so:

Abel spits out the bullet into his palm as he finishes loading the barrel of his rifle.

"They just... keep... coming. We're both low on spells... But I can hold them off long enough to give you a head start."
"Go. Go get that kingdom, Lord Zohan."

Hmmm - I haven't picked spells yet because I don't want to overlap too badly with the other characters niche-wise.

If Zohan and Abel are both picked (which I'm okay with!) I think we'll need to work to make sure we have different niches, in which case I'll pick a different school for Abel to specialize in.

Abel is primarily a direct-damage blaster wizard, and it seems like Zohan might be a different build.

Abel Valdemar, ready to go.
