This could be even more simple if you just equate space = water and just run with it. They're both restrictive environments. On the other hand, if the details are fun for you to work out, go for it.
Heck, run a 9 or 12 part AP if you start getting frisky. Have fun with the format. This. There's nothing magical about a 6-part campaign, and some stories are longer/shorter than others. Tell a good story and I won't care if it's 3, 6, or (number of your choosing) parts.

Honestly, I pay because I like the background and "fluff." When the RAW don't make sense, I go with the apparent intent and don't worry about it to much. However, I know from long experience that some games just don't work for some folks - it's personal taste.
Yup, Paizo took a fairly cautious approach to their Starfinder release schedule. Now that it's proven to have legs, I'm sure the supplemental material will start flowing. However, with the development lead time on games, the ship will take some time to turn.
Is worth noting that the Beta is now open to all. I've been playing around with it today, and I must say it's looking good.

It's worth mentioning that the KS has opened for late pledges - for those that are still interested in getting in on the KS deals.
I have not used it, but this might work.
It seems clear that they really crammed quite a bit into the CRB, and had to make some tough editing decisions on what to cut. Just getting all the rules in there forced them to be sparse in a few areas. I'd wait until Pact Worlds comes out to get a sense of what the supplementary material will look like.
