The Midnight Mirror

Welcome!

Please post an in character introduction in the gameplay thread, and an out of character one here. Let me know any "shenanigans" your character pulls that might need explaining. If you have a mount, animal companion, or familiar, let me know about them. I'll collect vital stats and day job checks for the chronicle at the end.

The Midnight Mirror

Nearly every nation has contributed to the Mendevian Crusade, but few are willing to send additional aid to assist the Pathfinder Society directly. Owed a favor the elves cannot refuse, Pathfinders travel to Kyonin to secure a force of some of the finest demon-hunters in Avistan only to find that the hunters are missing in action. Can the Pathfinders extract the lost elves from the depths of Tanglebriar, or will they become the latest casualties of Treerazer’s domain?

Recruitment for The Mosquito Witch is now open!

This is a PFS Scenario for levels 1-4. If you are interested in joining, please post here, but also add yourself to the signup document so I can calculate the tier and adjustment.

There are no official tags on this scenario, but I will note that it is horror-themed and is heavy on investigation. It is a little bit "sandboxey", so be prepared to have to make your own decisions and figure things out to advance the story.

This is open recruitment for 1-03: Escaping the Grave. If there is enough interest I am willing to run two tables.

For now please just reply with your character name, class, and level. I will get all of the other necessary bookkeeping information once we have our group(s) set.

In the gear list on page 288 (table 6-9), the Basic Crafter's Book is listed as 1sp. The description says

Quote:
Basic Crafter’s Book: This book contains the formulas (page 293) for Crafting the common items in this chapter.

.

On page 293, in table 6-13, the cost of a single level 0 common formula is listed as 5sp, with a footnote that says

Quote:
Formulas for all 0-level common items from this chapter can be purchased collectively in a basic crafter’s book.

I'm having trouble reconciling these two ... is there an errata? Or am I missing something?

The Wolf Jaw attack that come with the Wolf Stance gains the Trip trait when you are flanking your enemy. However, the text of the trip trait doesn't seem to give any benefits:

Quote:
You can use this weapon to Trip with the Athletics skill even if you don’t have a free hand. This uses the weapon’s reach (if different from your own) and adds the weapon’s item bonus to attack rolls as an item bonus to the Athletics check. If you critically fail a check to Trip using the weapon, you can drop the weapon to take the effects of a failure instead of a critical failure.

A Wolf Jaw attack is an unarmed attack, so you have a free hand. It won't have an Item bonus, and you can't drop it to avoid the critical failure.

I'm not seeing any benefit from the Trip trait. Am I missing something?

This is the High Tier (4-5) table for the by-request run of PFS Scenario 4-19.

The Midnight Mirror

You have been summoned to Heidmarch Manor, the home of the Magnimar Pathfinder Lodge. There you are presented with a map and a short letter that reads, "Once you are all gathered, follow this map to reach me in the Fenwall Mountains. A pathfinder is in need of assistance. I am already with him, please join me as quickly as possible."

The Midnight Mirror

Welcome! This is a "by request" run of PFS Scenario 4-19 for Core characters! Sign up via this Google Sheet.

I expect on average one post a day during the week, and at least one post over the weekend. I generally check in 1-2 times a day to respond to questions and update, particularly during combats, but that can go up or down based on how busy I am at work. If you are not in a US time zone, let me know so I have an idea of when to expect to hear from you (and so I can put another pin in my "where are my players from" map! :) ). If you know you're going to be out for an extended period, let me know and provide some sort of botting instructions.

For chronicles, please post the following information in this format (it helps me to keep organized to have everyone do it the same way):

Player Name:
Character Name:
PFS ID#:
Faction:
Character level (for subtier determination):
Normal or Slow track:
Day Job check or Downtime activity:

Please post an in-character introduction in the Gameplay thread, and an out-of-character one here. It will help me to have a heads-up on any particularly high skill checks, attacks, or AC, or special abilities that may be unusual.

The Midnight Mirror

A veteran Pathfinder exploring the Fenwall Mountains of Varisia has begun sleepwalking, traveling through the dead of night in the same direction each time. The following mornings, however, he awakens injured and lost in the wilderness, never reaching the mysterious destination that drew him from his bed in the night. Something is calling Kalkamedes, something powerful, but unless he can make it safely to the source of his somnambulism, that power will remain a mystery. It falls to a team of Pathfinders to escort the sleepwalker to his destination and uncover the true nature of the strange phenomenon overtaking Kalkamedes's dreams.

The Midnight Mirror

The Pathfinder Society has turned its attention to the Ruby Phoenix Tournament—a world-renowned fighting competition, held once every ten years in the city of Goka on the eastern continent of Tian Xia. More specifically, the Decemvirate is interested in the incredible prizes available to the tournament’s winner—a choice of treasure from the legendary vaults of Hao Jin, the Ruby Phoenix herself. As part of the preparations for the tournament, Pathfinder Society agents have been deployed across the Inner Sea and beyond to seek out forgotten lore, allies, and magical items to be used by the Society’s tournament representatives.

Venture-Captain Amara Li, leader of the Lantern Lodge and Goka native, has uncovered information about one such item hidden amid the reaches of the Wall of Heaven—an Iroran relic known as the Braid of a Hundred Masters. Organizing the search from her base in the Dragon Empires, she intends to send a group of Pathfinders to the high mountain range in search of the braid’s ancient home: the Clouded Path Monastery.

Introduce yourselves!

The Midnight Mirror

In the port of Senghor, it is taboo to even speak of the accursed ruin of Boali that sits on the other side of the bay, let alone to set foot in its rubble-strewn streets. Yet rumors have reached the Pathfinder Society that the Aspis Consortium has sent agents to search through this forbidden city. Although few people willingly travel to its shores, Boali is far from quiet. It falls to a small group Pathfinder agents to get the bottom of the Aspis plot without falling prey to the ruin's dangers. Can the PCs bring the Consortiums' true motives to light?

Contents in Signs in Senghor also contribute directly to the ongoing storyline of the Exchange faction.

This adventure begins in the town of Eleder on the southwest coast of the Mwangi Expanse. You are in the office of Venture-Captain Finze Bellaugh. Introduce yourselves as you arrive.

Liberty's Edge 4/5 *

I just want to clarify what John posted for character creation.

Can items from the "treasure" section be purchased? I ask because some things we are accustomed to being standard starting gear (like holy water and alchemist's fire) are in that section.

I would have just assumed that any common item of my level or lower is available, but then the 5th and 10th level rules give you six items of specified levels for free. If I can buy items, then there would be no need to list items of specific levels; just give us extra gold and be on our way.

OTOH, if "treasure" items aren't available, what would I spend my 50gp/350gp on? There isn't *that* much equipment available.

Similarly, are armor and weapon special materials and runes available? If so, at what level?

I'm clearly missing something. Help!

Welcome to the four part Echoes of the Everwar. I've GMed this series several times face to face, and I'm looking forward to running it here.

It is not absolutely necessary to play all four parts, but I highly recommend it. This is a fun series and worth seeing all the way through. If anyone can't or doesn't want to run the whole series, let me know as soon as possible so I can recruit replacements as needed.

I expect on average one post a day during the week, and at least one post over the weekend. I generally check in 3-4 times a day to respond to questions and update, particularly during combats, but that can change based on how busy I am at work. I'll break between each part to allow everyone to apply XP and gold. It's a four parter, so everyone will be leveling up at some point during the series (unless you are slow-tracking). Have some idea of what you plan to do so we can move into the next scenario without too long of a delay.

For chronicles, please post the following information in this format (it helps me to keep organized to have everyone do it the same way):

Maps and images will be on a google slideshow linked at the top of the page. Please note that all maps in this scenario were drawn with 10' squares, so your tokens will be scaled to fit in 1/4 of a square, and I'll need everyone to just visualize the intermediate lines. :-)

I think that's it for pre-game stuff. As soon as I have all the players, I'll calculate APL and determine subtier. I'm eager to get started!

The Midnight Mirror

After travelling to Dtang Ma, you ascend a mountain trail to meet with Old Pak in the Broken Temple, one of many recently discovered archaeology sites that litter the northern slopes of the Kullan Die mountain range. You meet up on the path, and have a chance to get to know each other before arriving at the Temple to meet your contact.

Post an introduction and do a little roleplay as all the players arrive!

The Midnight Mirror

Players, to start this game off, I need a few things:

1. Please let me know if this character has credit for any of the following scenarios:
#8–09 Forged in Flame, Part 1: The Cindersworn Pact
#8–11 Forged in Flame, Part 2: Cleansed with Fire
#8–02: Ward Asunder

2. Please roll me two will saves. These will be used at critical story points where asking you to roll would give away that something is happening. If the roll is such that you might want to use a campaign re-roll, please say so and roll again.

3. Make sure your online character sheet is updated, particularly for feats, skills, and languages.

4. If you have anything that is from a less-common source or that might be subject to table variation, please make sure to let me know now so I can familiarize myself and make any rulings now.

Welcome to the game!

The Midnight Mirror

The Midnight Mirror

Welcome to the Ruins of Azlant AP!

Besides the AP Players' Guide, please read my Campaign Introduction with houserules on character creation, and the Downtime and Crafting rules. You will also want to be familiar with the Aquatic Combat rules. I have links to all of these on the Campaign Info tab.

Please talk to each other as you create your characters. We want to have a reasonably well-rounded party. You are welcome to have backgrounds that involve already knowing one or more of the other PCs if you want.

Journals
I will keep a Google Doc with a timeline journal recording the events of the campaign from an omniscient point of view. I will have another document listing people and places you encounter. I will allow editing so that you can record your own notes and comments. Both of these are linked at the top of each page, along with the map and images link.

Finally, I highly encourage you to periodically write entries from your characters’ personal journal/diary. All of you are very creative people, and I look forward to collecting those journals to provide a history of the campaign to read over as we progress.

The Midnight Mirror

I had originally thought I wouldn't be able to start until the 15th, but I have all my stuff ready, so we can begin whenever everyone has checked in and introduced themselves on the gameplay thread.

The Midnight Mirror

You have been called to the Grand Lodge of Absalom for a briefing. Seated in a small chamber around a darkwood table, various trophies gathered from across the face of Golarion hang from the walls. A monkey-shaped mask with a serpent’s tongue glares out from the center of one wall, a strange halberd with gold rings piercing its thick blade and dragons carved along its haft hangs opposite the monkey mask. You are alone save your fellow Pathfinders, who apparently have been called here for the same purpose.

Character introduction time!

The Midnight Mirror

With the current signups, we are at APL 6.5. Because of the special "exactly .5 rule", you have the choice: Do you want to play the 5-6 tier with no adjustment, or the 8-9 tier with the 4-player adjustment?

The Midnight Mirror

You have been summoned to the new Magnimar Lodge in Varisia, on the estate of Venture-Captains Canayven and Sheila Heidmarch. When you arrive, you are given rooms in one of the smaller buildings and told you have the day at leisure to rest and prepare for your assigned duties the next day.

------------------------
Introduce yourselves as you meet up on the grounds of Heidmarch Manor. Game will start once everyone has had a chance to join.

Liberty's Edge 4/5 *

Does anyone do it? I am fond of Roll20 for things like sight lines / lighting, range checking, and the like. I am looking at getting into GMing PbP games and was thinking of using Roll20 for the combat maps instead of google docs.

Liberty's Edge

Anyone want to pre-muster?

I have a host of level 1-3 characters I could play, so I'm curious what other folks are bringing.

Liberty's Edge

Looking to start pre-mustering!

I have a variety of characters in tier, but it seems like it might be well suited for my level 5 comedian Bard, or possibly my level 5 shoanti Slayer with surprisingly decent social and knowledge skills.

Liberty's Edge

Who's ready to pre-muster?

I'm wanting to go swimming with my 4th level undine Hydrokineticist. My wife has a 5th level alchemist that usually plays together with that character, but has others as well.

Liberty's Edge

Who wants to start pre-mustering? :-)

My wife and I have several possible character teams to bring, depending on the other players:

Level 11: Trip/Disarm focused monk and charging heavy Fighter
Level 10: Mouser/Brawler and reach/support Paladin
Level 7: Travel Cleric (healing and support) and bodyguard Cavalier

My preference is to play 10-11 with either of the first two, but if there aren't enough others for high subtier, we can go with the low pair.

So, I know that I still need to post, figure out the relic thing, and finish updating Audria's character sheet and get up in her profile. I caught the flu and have been recovering from that, which is why I haven't gotten it up, yet. Unfortunately, It's not going to happen for at least two more weeks because of work and then going off somewhere with my mom and sister for Christmas, and honestly I need to unplug for a bit.

Needless to say, I don't want to delay things, so please bot me as needed.

As for the rumors and stuff, here's some ideas I had.

- Audria's killed undead monsters that were rising up to devour the city (referencing the vampire spawn we killed)
- Audria can stop even the most violent mobs with naught but her voice (referencing the two times she's done that so far in game)
- Audria turned into an angel and made the Gray Maidens stand down when the Korvosan Guard came to investigate the Hospice (Exaggeration of what actually happened)
- Audria is actually an angel/azata/agathion (She's not, Tally is)
- Audria can change into a songbird (She can't)
- Audria's Blackjack's sidekick (Nope)
- Audria's Shrike's sidekick (Close enough, I guess?)
- Audria's a succubus in disguise (Nope)
- Audria's King Eodred's bastard daughter (Nope)
- Audria's actually Shrike, and is a demon in disguise (Nope, spread by Halvara)
- Audria's a cold-blooded murderer that killed her own mother and has been killing people ever since (Nope, spread by Halvara)
- Audria's the one who helped Trinia poison King Eodred (Nope, spread by Halvara)
- Audria is the Key Lock Killer (Nope)
- Audria is the one that killed Brother Theolan (Never in a million years)

I was thinking about making her glaive or the mithral plate she's getting the relic.

Also, would Brother Theolan remember what happened? Audria would definitely ask about that when he got rezzed.

Thank you Shrike for taking care of all of the bookkeeping. I greatly appreciate not having to worry about that.

I'll get a post up today, or at least try to.

One last question for the GM, would it be alright if I did get a suit of mithril plate with the cash from selling all of the loot?

Also, Shrike, I'm okay with taking the funds needed to repair the warehouse out of the total before the split.

Audria's too tired to argue with Elric and keeps watch over Shane and Jessica as they work on a cure. No scribe herself and certainly no alchemist, she finds that she can't do much to aid directly, but she has been slowly working on her cooking skills and can at least make sure the pair of them are working well-fed and supplied with drinks that help maintain focus and provide a bit of energy.

Taking 10 for a 19 on the Profession(Cook) check if it matters.

Once the notes are copied and a cure discovered, she says a prayer over Elric and anyone else acting as a runner before they leave. By the end of the ordeal, while Jessica and Shane are sharing some historical context, Audria and Tally are passed out in a chair in the corner.

"I can take the copies to the temples, Jessica, and Abella. I'm sure she'll work with you on this, Shane. She doesn't strike me as a petty person. I think Tally's going to be staying with you for a while, though. That last fight took a lot out of her," Audria replies quietly, looking at the even more haggard looking thrush perched on her shoulder.

Audria will act as a runner since she can't help with the notes. Tally's down to her last 3 HP, so she's going to be spending a lot of time staying out of the way and sleeping.

Audria smiles as Shane plays along, but it fades as she gets out of the Gray Maiden's armor and back into her own clothing in as private of a place as she can manage. Her hair grows a few inches, but she manages to keep her composure well enough that nothing more dramatic happens. Once changed, she bundles up the armor and want nothing more than to curl up and sleep for a few days, but the arrival of the guard and Field Marshal Kroft along with the others' return from below mean that she can't rest yet. With a very frazzled Tally on her shoulder and her holy symbol prominently displayed on her breast, she holds her glaive in one hand as she joins the others.

"Now would be a good time for cooperation, don't you think," the haggard young paladin asks the Gray Maidens. "Unless you wish to be tarred with the same brush as those who were hear seeking to spread this plague, then by all means, keep bickering with the Field Marshal like some cur growling over a bone."

I don't see us being able to talk our way out if I'm wearing a suit of their armor with no good reason in their eyes."

Ping hesitates, remembering what happened at the crossing, but after a moment, she sighs and steps beside Ulfbrecht.

"She is. Taken by a demon in the middle of the night on her way home yestereve, as near as we can tell. She--" The words catch in Ping's through as she realizes what she is about to say. A friend? I barely know her, but--but I did trust her. That's as close to a friend as I seem to have.

"She is a friend," Ping says softly after her hesitation, sounding almost scared by the words coming from her mouth. "She is a dear friend and I want to see her safely back to her home."

Given that I've been using the Breastplate stats and not the Gray Maiden plate stats, that hits. Heck, even if I had Audria wearing full plate, that'd hit. Audria's AC vs. Andaisin is 21.

Okay, looks like Audria can make it with a charge, and would you look at that! Fly says she can charge. Activating Smite, then charging.

Audria launches herself into the air and flies at Andaisin as fast as she can manage with Shane's spell. Casting Color Spray, Wisdom Save to negate.

Color Spray:

A rainbow cone springs forth from the caster’s hand, causing nearby creatures to fall asleep. The spell can affect a number of creatures equal to 1d4 plus the caster’s level. The cone is 5 feet wide and 25 feet long. The closest creatures in the cone are affected first.

The result of the spell depends upon the HD of the targeted creatures. Creatures of 2 HD or less are struck unconscious for 2d4 rounds; creatures of 3 to 4 HD are blinded for 1d4 rounds; and creatures of 5 HD or greater are stunned for one round. Creatures of the same level or HD as the caster, and all creatures with 5 HD or greater may make a wisdom saving throw to shake off the color spray. Sightless creatures are not affected by color spray.

The material components of this spell are small colored objects.

"So one of these death's head covers for his release," Audria says. "What would you ask for a copy of your notes on this plague?"

Audria, hearing that this man is a vampire, thinks back to what they found under the dollmaker's shop and shivers as she recalls how dangerous the vampires there seemed. This one, Ramozka Arkminos, seems far more intelligent and far more dangerous than those had.

This will go badly if it turns into a fight, and he could kill this young man just to spite us. As much as I hate to admit it, negotiating seems wiser.

Audria shifts her glaive to her left hand before taking off the Gray Maiden helm she is wearing to make her intentions clear. She steps into Arkminos' lair, taking some comfort from Tally's warmth even if she can also feel the little songbird shivering against her neck.

"I guess that it would be in vain to hope that you are trying to find a cure for this plague through this research," Audria says. "I would also guess that you are far smarter than the vampires we ran into in Old Korvosa. Would you perhaps be willing to let this young man go free and to share what you have learned?"

That's fair. Here's hoping things go well.

Audria looks from the man to the poor soul he has on the table. She holds her glaive ready to defend herself, but seeing the unnerving man so close to an innocent bystander, she doesn't move to attack, and hopes that the others will show restraint. This man could slit the young man's throat before they could get to him.

"May I presume that you are Master Arkminos," she asks. "I am Audria Lumina, Sister in the service of Shelyn. What research requires you to chain down a young man in this place?"

Audria hesitates. Elric, Kandru, and Shane are right, but she doesn't want to leave someone behind them, especially if they are dangerous. They could be caught in a pincer, and that could be disastrous.

"What do I do," she quietly asks herself.

One of the downsides of reading this module from years ago is that I know how this is supposed to go, so I'm going to roll and see what Audria does to avoid metagaming one way or the other.

1 - Audria opens the door, 2 - Audria joins the others: 1d2 ⇒ 1

I'm sorry, but you'll have to yell at me later. I can't leave a danger behind us. I just hope I can handle this on my own.

She takes in a deep breath and opens the door.

Audria follows Elric's first volley and rushes up the stairs to up on the catwalk. Her glaive glints in the eerie light as she brings it down on the cultist before her.

"I guess there's no point in asking for your surrender," she says.

Left a spot open so that Shrike or Pava can slip in there.

I guess I should be mad, too, but even if Shelyn is known as the Eternal Rose, a lot of her imagery deals more with songbirds and artworks.

Remembering a conversation from what seems like long ago, Audria steps up and lays a hand on the young man's arm.

"I know. We are not without our blessings, however. I follow Shelyn and my stoic friend over there is blessed by Abadar. Evil may have a short triumph, but in the end, I believe that good will prevail. We're here to certainly make sure it does, anyway." She gives him what she hopes is a reassuring smile with her last sentence.

Histya mauls one of the blind rangers to death, his screams echoing off the surrounding trees as the life is torn from him. His deathcry is joined by others as Erigga turns into a berserk whirlwind of death, cutting down goblins left and right before the mob breaks and the few survivors run for their lives.

Moon, meanhile, chases down Okishi, the chieftain. The goblin looks up from the spell she was beginning to cast and sees the half-elf moving in for the kill. Her scream of defiance is a frail thing when pitted against steel forged by Braggar's hands and enchanted by fey magics. The scream turns into one of pain and fear as Moon slices through goblin flesh and severs Okishi's arm above the elbow. Her legs follow, leaving her sitting on the ground with bloody stumps trailing blood as the Manylegs chieftain tries to put any distance she can between herself and Moon that she can.

"No! NO! SPARE ME--" She starts to beg, but her plea for mercy dies as her head flies from her neck. For one fleeting instance, Okishi sees the doom that has befallen her tribe as her head spins through the air. She sees the pile of corpses left behind by Erigga, the dead ranger under Histya, then her own maimed body collapsing to the forest floor. Finally, she sees Moon's pitiless eyes as they watch Okishi Goldfang's head fall.

Then all goes black for the chieftain as Pharasma claims her to be judged.

I'll let Betz and Grob act before moving onto the goblins' reactions to this new development.

Shrike:

Audria nods, acknowledging what Shrike said even if she isn't so sure she could be a compass for anyone.

"I'll try," she whispers back before steeling herself for whatever horrors are left to be discovered in this terrible place.

Audria takes off the helmet of the borrowed gray maiden armor and makes sure her holy symbol is out for all to see before moving to those that Shrike indicates are already dead and praying for their souls as she ends their cursed unliving existence. The grisly task done, she turns to those that are still living.

"We are here to put an end to this and save whomever we can," she says as gently as she can manage. "We'll see that you get out and healed as best we can, but first we must deal with those behind this."

Audria's voice lacks any venom, but there's a hurt note that she can't keep out of it.

[smaller]"I'll keep your secret," she reassures the taller woman. "That's about all you need me to do."

After the others have taken care of the cultists in the barracks, Audria follows Shrike as she goes to explore the room Rolth and his retinue came from.

Raseri does her best to shield Emilee when she hears the hag's voice, but when the old crone's attention turns to her, she feels terrible small. She should have known the spiteful old witch would have found someway to hurt them. Her family is long dead, so the hag reached for old wounds and insecurities.
