I had an idea for a rival party that I could throw against my PCs and I was wondering if anyone wanted to help me brainstorm and flesh it out.
The basic premise is that the party uses adventuring tropes to mislead their opponents at the start of a fight and gain the upper hand. They do this by looking like they have different party roles then they actually do, leading rival parties to misplan against them.
Example 1:
A large, muscular, tattooed half-orc that looks like a savage barbarian. However, he is actually a shaman with a life spirit and both him and his spirit animal serve as the party's main healers.
Example 2:
A demur, dainty looking female elf in white clergy robes, holding a rod and looking like the stereotypical healbot. However, her rod is actually a disguised rapier and as soon as she is engaged she removes the robes with a flourish to reveal a swashbuckling damage dealer.
Example 3:
A large, steel armored juggernaut wall of a man that looks to be the party's main tank. What it actually is, however, is an animated skeleton of the party's tiny gnome wizard wearing armor that is decked out with exploding runes. The gnome commands it into battle to engage the fighters and then lets it blow up, revealing he was hiding in the backpack it left behind.
Example 4:
An elderly, hunchbacked, wizened half elf with full long beard, wizard robes, and staff. While he looks and acts for all intensive purposes as a wizard, his true role is the party's tank and is a paladin synthesist summoner whose eidolon armor is a giant golden angelic golem.
Do you guys have any other ideas along this line? I'm interested in any ideas you may have as I would like to throw something like this against my PCs in the near future.
