Grand Lodge 4/5

I have recently set up a lodge in Bellis of the Verduran Forest. It's a small town to be sure, but perfect to grow relations with the Society as the town itself grows. Also, close access to the forest gives me some room to escape the idle happenings of my new role.

"[...]Besdies, what could possibly go wrong?"

No sooner do the words leave Blossym's mouth, a wolf can be heard howling in the distance, and a sudden wind ruffles the papers and flickers the candles around you. Somewhere in the distance, thunder peals through the sky.

"That's odd," comments the Venture Captain. "I didn't think any storm clouds had rolled in. Anyway! Once again, your boat leaves at first light tomorrow. Take your rest here in Bellis and prepare yourselves for the journey ahead."

Aye, go ahead and pop it in a spoiler.

"Wolves, bears, squirrels, nothing out of the usual I would expect. As I said, they should leave you alone, so no trade routes are threatened. Hence why we want to work with them and make friends."

"Kassen, like here, is a wooded area. It's in the Fangwood, so be aware of any wild animals. They shouldn't attack you without provocation, though."

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

Venture Captain Galanodel sits back in his chair and chuckles. "Not every mission requires swords drawn and teeth bared. The flame you'll be retrieving is a symbol to the people of Kassen, as will be the task itself of retrieving it. From what I know, there's little real danger involved. And if I'm wrong, I am confident you can overcome it."

“Welcome to the Verduran Forest, Pathfinders. I am Samhain Galanodel, newly appointed Venture Captain. Thank you all for coming. If you do not mind, I will skip straight to the point. The Society has recently begun courting a small town called Kassen, a hamlet in the northern region of the Fangwood. As a show of good faith, we need some newer agents to go through… well, a bit of an initiation.

“Every year, a select few people of the town make a pilgrimage to a nearby memorial where a flame burns perpetually. They take some of the fire and bring it back to town to supply their light and warmth. Occasionally, they send a group of young adolescents to do the task as a sort of rite of passage into adulthood. It is a great sense of trust placed on these hopefuls, the fire which forges their men, you could say.

“We have convinced them to allow our agents, namely you, to complete this pilgrimage in their stead. This will show we are trustworthy and capable allies.

“You will journey to Kassen at morning’s first light tomorrow. That should give you plenty of time to prepare. We have chartered a boat to serve as your transport to and from Kassen. Now, I am sure you have questions, but the details of the ritual are not known by me. I can, however, offer you some other insights if you wish.”

The owl clicks its beak impatiently.

Wondering if anyone is feeling up to GMing the module "Academy of Secrets" (lvls 12-14) for PbP. Or even if there are any players with legal characters who can join this ranger in playing? Just played Tomb of the Iron Medusa today and wanna keep going with this character. Well, till I can't, of course.

The owl clicks its beak and seems to stare into Krestin's soul as their golden eyes lock.

Samhain chuckles at the nonverbal exchange. "That is Civetta, my companion. She is unused to being confined to small rooms for long amounts of time."

To Ferebras, "I am unsure on some specifics of this tomb, truth be told. I know it is something to do with a founding father. As for our motives, a friend for us is one less for those who would fight against us. Also, their position on the Tourendal River could serve us as a good port should we find ourselves going through the Fangwood along that lumber flow."

To Craggor, "The act of bringing the flames is a symbol which is greatly regarded by those in Kassen. By taking on the ritual, we not only show our abilities as Pathfinders, but also a respect for their local views."

To Soran, "By the gods, sirrah, you seem very tense. As if you just encountered a demon straight from the Worldwound! But to the matter at hand, I know little of what this task entails. Better I do not let slip something beforehand that may compromise our position. Or so I am told."

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

The Venture-Captain sits back in his chair with a grin. "Pathfinders should be prepared for whatever comes their way, and adaptable enough to overcome what they did not prepare for. That is to say: I have no idea. Perhaps the locals will know more details for you."

There is a vanity or two in Pathfinder Society Primer that Venture Captains get a discount on. Otherwise, you can now introduce them as a Venture Captain if you play them in modules and such.

I think my one question is... who let out those prisoners and for why? Adril and his clones were the ioun stones, so was it the Decemvirate member what released them? If so, why? Did they think we were the ones going to kill him/her? Could they not see our actions in trying to stop him throughout the other three parts from their observatory room? That's what I'm baffled about.

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

Ain't that the truth, hahaha. I can't count the number of times I'd sit down with players after Chronicle sheets are distributed to say "This is what was really happening" or "This is who that guy is" or "Here's the story on this place". It's often difficult to shoe-horn in all the information needed in the middle of gameplay without laying everything out and spoiling the surprise.

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

From what I could tell, it's the standard alotment of a possible 2 PA each, one for completion, one for secondary success conditions. I dunno, with the change back in season 5, it's hard to keep track still and we're already wrapping up season 6, haha.

Won't argue with Eyes being a bit FUBAR with all the campaign changes and story progression. Don't get me wrong, I relished the chance to play, and again want to thank you for running us through it, but now I see why a replacement retirement arc is so badly requested.

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

Just so I'm seein' right, 0 PA earned for part III, 1 PA earned for part IV, plus the 5 for the chronicle boon. And it's 5 exp for the whole series?

Thanks so very much for bearing with us for this wonderful experience! Sorry for being a butt from time to time, hahaha.

Day Job: 10 + 20 = 30

I only have the first two Chronicles. Don't know if you didn't send it or if you did send it and I lost it when my laptop crashed. Probably the latter, hahaha.

Initiate Pathfinder ##, 63517-17. Now to figure out who to make...

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

Samhain focuses on the remaining Adril, trying to put him down now.

Many shot + PBS + Deadly Aim: 1d20 + 16 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 16 + 1 = 23
2d8 + 18 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ (8, 4) + 18 + 2 + (4, 4) = 40

Iterative: 1d20 + 11 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 11 + 1 = 21
1d8 + 9 + 1 + 2d6 ⇒ (2) + 9 + 1 + (5, 2) = 19

Tertiary: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 6 + 1 = 22
1d8 + 9 + 1 + 2d6 ⇒ (6) + 9 + 1 + (3, 1) = 20

It doesn't seem to be very effective...

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

Samhain nods as he watches the talking Adril fall. "We will do our best!"

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

Good call, Hugo!

+102 damage. Good gods...

As Talk Adril moves away, Civetta takes an iffective peck.

AoO: 1d20 + 12 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 12 + 1 = 27 +6 for human
1d4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 +6 for human

Samhain steps back from the man before him and tries to take him down before returning focus to Talk Adril.

Many Shot: 1d20 + 14 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 14 + 1 = 32 +6 if human
2d8 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (4, 8) + 18 + 2 = 32 plus 2d6 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3 holy +12 if human

Rapid: 1d20 + 14 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 14 + 1 = 22 +6 if human
1d8 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 9 + 1 = 16 plus 2d6 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6 holy +6 if human

Iterative: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 9 + 1 = 30 +6 if human
1d8 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 9 + 1 = 15 plus 2d6 ⇒ (5, 1) = 6 holy +6 if human
Confirm!: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 9 + 1 = 22 +6 if human
2d8 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (5, 2) + 18 + 2 = 27 +12 if human

Tertiary: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 4 + 1 = 20 +6 if human
1d8 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 9 + 1 = 13 plus 2d6 ⇒ (6, 5) = 11 holy +6 if human

He then directs Civetta to attack the Adril by her.

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

Was just typing it up. Just got home.

Civetta Init: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 2 = 11
Just to see if she goes before or after Adril in the surprise round. So just before.

As Adril moves in, Civetta flies in with a (partial) charge.

Charge: 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 12 + 2 = 33 +6 if human
1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 +6 if human

Samhain steps away from the Adril in front of him to snap some shots off at the one attacking the Decemvirate member.

Many Shot, Point Blank Shot, Deadly Aim, everything but Rapid Shot. And no soft cover for the target, either.
Many Shot+PBS: 1d20 + 16 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 16 + 1 = 20 +6 if human
Reroll: 1d20 + 16 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 16 + 1 + 4 = 25 +6 if human
damage: 2d8 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (1, 4) + 18 + 2 = 25 +if evil: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7 +12 if human

Iterative: 1d20 + 11 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 11 + 1 = 15 +6 if human
damage: 1d8 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 9 + 1 = 17 +if evil: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 4) = 7 +6 if human

Tertiary: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 1 = 15 +6 if human
damage: 1d8 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 9 + 1 = 18 +if evil: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2 +6 if human

Player goes and cowers in a corner for those bad die rolls. But first Civetta's full attack.

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

Samhain looks at the other members, shakes his head to indicate no other targets currently, and moves forward with the rest of the group.

Something is not right. Where is he? This is much too convenient.

With a motion, he sends Civetta to circle above by the ceiling and tells the bird to defend the masked figure against any threats.

Finally, he taps his quiver again with the wand to ensure he has enough arrows for a confrontation he is all too certain will occur.

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

It will be if we stop that smegger Hestrom! =P

Grand Lodge

With Ezrek's comment, a wave of tentative relief washes over Samhain. "We're not too late for once," he says quietly.

He keeps his eyes peeled for the traitorous murderer in this room. "Now, where is he?"

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

May as well try to fell it.

Samhain fires off some more shots from his cover behind the pillar.

Many Shot: 1d20 + 16 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 16 + 1 = 36
2d8 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (8, 2) + 18 + 2 = 30

Iterative: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
1d8 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 9 + 1 = 16

Tertiary if it still stands: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
1d8 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 9 + 1 = 14

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

Samhain moves in to duck behind a pillar and (assuming it's hostile, hence initiative) will loose an arrow at it.

Deadly Aim: 1d20 + 16 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 16 + 1 = 24
1d8 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 9 + 1 = 11
Sneak attack: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Grand Lodge

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

As the door shuts and the room spins, Samhain is suddenly very glad he stepped into the room.

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

Samhain casts Protection From Energy (fire) on himself to prevent himself from being singed by any more flames before stepping into the room.

You may take 10 if there are consequences of failure. Like taking 10 on climb or acrobatics. Only thing the rules say don't allow an take 10 is with distractions or threats (such as combat). Taking 20 is what is restricted when there are consequences for failure.

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

Samhain nods agreement. "I pray Desna smiles on us through this." He looks to see who will go first. If no one volunteers, he will.

"Which way did they go?"

Before leaving, Samhain turns to the woman. "I apologize for the fate of the others, and for having no power to release you properly given that the person who released you is not a true member of the Decemvirate. If any members remain, I will mention your cooperation to them and plead your case for release. Until now, I recommend not going far. The Society will not treat lightly those who try to escape."

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

Samhain cocks his head. "The Decemvirate released you? Why would they do that? Nothing personal, but why would one's captor's suddenly release their wards in a time such as this?"

Grand Lodge

Elf 63517-2 NPC Venture-Captain of the Lodge in Bellis, Verduran Forest

As Ezrek checks, Samhain takes a wand and taps himself before stowing it again in his quiver.
