Rauno has obviously found his battle pace, stepping back once more to level his bow at the ferocious raptor. His shots this time focus entirely on the beast, perhaps indicating the archer's concern for taking the thing down quickly. Just a Full Attack this round--hope these hit because that's some nice damage!
Male Elf Wizard 1 (0 xp)
Rauno nods his head at Melani, then steps back from the raptor to fire once more. Seeing the goblin again using a wand, he aims his first shot at disarming it again before firing the other two at the raptor. Rapid Shot, with first being Ranged Disarm. Note that the last attack roll should be at +7 instead of +12 (Attacks 25, 18, and 26; Damage NA (6), 10, and 13)

Rauno casts a quick, side-long glance at Melani, raises an eyebrow, then refocuses his attention on the raptor. Stepping back to avoid the beast's claws, he again levels his bow, this time aiming all three arrows at the scaly creature Rapid Shot again (Attack rolls 23, 27, and 11, damage 8, 8, and 11). Attack roll, attack damage (1d20+12=23, 1d8+5=8, 1d20+12=27, 1d8+5=8, 1d20+7=11, 1d8+5=11)

Rauno is already firing as Melani shouts, shifting his first shot slightly. His arrow flies toward the wand-wielding goblin that fired at him, aimed in truth not at the goblin, but at his hand... Two more arrows fly lightning-fast toward the last raptor that hadn't yet acted, the archer instinctively taking advantage of the creature's slower reaction time. Rapid Shot, with first shot used for a Ranged Disarm attempt vs. the goblin (opposing Attack roll of 20). Last two shots go at the flat-footed raptor (Attack rolls 30 and 26, damage 17 and 15).

Rauno follows along cautiously behind Shariv, mirroring Xer's preparedness. After Melani checks out the door with her arcane sight, Rauno says quietly to Shariv, "Let me take a look..." He then inspects the door and area around it carefully. Listen 24 (15+9), Move Silently 18 (8+10), Search 24 (13+11)

Following along behind Shariv, Rauno considers the fan blades. "We can get through those, but I'm bettin' the others can't. You watch the corridor while I motion the others down. I'll jam the blades long enough for them to get through, then follow behind and unjam them so our presence will be less likely detected." Heading back to the opening, he motions the others down. Once all are gathered, he looks over the mechanism driving the fans, extracts a rolled up leather tool belt, then with a few twists and pokes using strange devices Rauno set to work temporarily shutting down the drive mechanism.

Rauno listens carefully to the description of their target, then states, "I should be able to get in that side entrance no problem. Of course, I'm betting it's more dangerous than our informant knows... With little else to add, he follows Melani inside, plunking his own coin purse down on the counter. Looking to Gadka, he states, "300 gold. Give me whatever you can to protect against enchantments and such."

Rauno looks at Adaro after his comment about lunatics, shaking his head but saying nothing. As part of the group enters Gadka's store, Rauno watches Xer take his position then assumes a similar spot on the other side of the storefront, looking to set up a nice crossfire option and also keep a look down the other streets.

Rauno looks at the halfling with a raised eyebrow. "You've got to be kidding, right? You waltz into the city and the first thing you do is blow up a bunch of random people. Then you want to disappear? Splitting up in this place, especially after we just infuriated one of the local gangs, will be a death sentence for whoever goes out alone. We stay together and check out this lead with Radka--setting up a watch outside is a good plan. Unless you want to be the one walking around alone..."

Propping his longbow on his shoulder, Rauno nods and then looks around the area to try and recover any arrows he can. He then heads out behind Xer, content to wander around the city a bit before heading toward the promenade. As he moves along the ramshackle streets, the archer always directs his path to avoid large groups of people while keeping sharp for trouble. I can't access Invisible Castle from work do to our federal firewall. Rauno's Spot and Listen modifiers are bth +9 if needed. Not sure on arrow recovery as to if the fellow ran off with the two sticking in him...50% chance on the one that missed.

Rauno is shocked for a moment by the events, but then quickly moves over to Shariv. "Him we might need to watch more than enemies..." Jagging a thumb toward the small wizard. "As for that Gadka fellow, I'm thinkin' we browse about a bit to blend in, then look him up. It'd be Desna's blessing for this gang's Patron and our target to be one and the same..."
Male Elf Wizard 1 (0 xp)
Rauno watches impassively as the man flees, notching another arrow as he does. "Shariv, you could have at least signaled before laying on the diplomacy. I probably could have gotten three more shots off with a bit of warning..." Turning his gaze out to the crowd, the seasoned trouble-shooter looks for other lurking dangers, and says loudly enough for all nearby to hear, "Who's the next pin-cushion?" The above is mostly just flavor text getting ready for the next round of attacks...

Rauno, having taken a seat in a corner of the room affording him a ready view of everyone and the door, sits quietly through these discussions. A stout-looking bow rests next to him, strung as if for immediate use, while a starknife dangles from a loop in his belt. He nervously flips a razor open and shut as the others talk. At Shariv's comment directed toward him, the quiet Varisian simply nods. Let him do all the talking, he's better at it anyways... His grim gaze following along the conversation to each speaker, Rauno is obviously intently listening despite his lack of participation. An enchantress...we'll need protection against her charms. As Xer speaks, Rauno's face shows a bit more interest, though in the man's bow more than his words. Another archer, eh? Draw looks a bit weak on that bow. We'll see how quick he is... As Adaro finishes speaking, Rauno realizes he's the only one that hasn't replied, and so with some obvious reluctance finally speaks, "Name's Rauno. I'm your man for traps'n such. Not too bad a shot, either. Abadar's gold is good enough for me, and I'm good with working in a team so long as no one puts my pay in question.

Rauno is more mercenary than hero, but he's not evil/mean. He sees himself as a professional, paid to do dangerous jobs others aren't brave/capable enough to handle. If he's paid to work with a group, he'll work with the group. If the group (or individuals therein) endanger the mission in such a way as to jeopardize Rauno's pay, though, he'll be more likely to forget that he has Precise Shot... Oh, and I don't think I've seen it posted so wanted to ask...how are we doing hp? Right now I've just got Rauno at max for 1st level, then 1/2 HD + 1 plus Con minus Quick for each level thereafter. Barring any changes to his hp based on this question, he's done.

Hey Arc, I noticed you had bracers of armor +1--do note that the armor bonus from those won't stack with the mithral shirt. Also, not sure if you've played the OotBI before, but some folks are surprised when they find their Ranged Precision ability can't be used with things like Rapid Shot and Manyshot since using it requires a Standard Action. I'm a big fan of the class since I like archers, but didn't want that to sneak up on you. DM, are traits okay for use? If so, Aggressive and Quick suit Rauno pretty well...

DM wrote: Good point. I believe the DMG had some guidelines for disposable magic items in a one-shot adventure like this. I think it to multiply the cost of disposable items because their utility was out of proportion to their standard cost in a single adventure like this. Will this cover PHB items as well, or just magic items? Rauno has some alchemical stuff that I'd need to adjust if necessary.

And his background: Rauno grew up among the Sczarni, his parents both working various schemes to part foreigners from their money. Rauno found that simple con jobs and such held little interest for him--they were both underwhelming in reward and lacking in risk. In truth, he also hated the interaction with strangers due to a natural shyness. In his travels, however, he found one thing that could provide both the thrill of danger he sought and the considerable wealth due one willing to take such risks, with no need for much talk at all. The ruins that dot Varisia are renowned among his people as places of bad luck, evil, and haunted by demons of the past. Rauno cares nothing for such taboos; so long as someone is willing to pay him the money he'll go anywhere, recover anything, and return it with no questions asked. As he grew in his career as an explorer for hire, Rauno found that the bow was a much more favorable weapon than blade or spear, for the distance between himself and his prey was greatly increased. Rauno thrills in battle as much as in delving the ancient dungeons of his land, but he also knows standing too close to a giant is just plain stupid, and a horde of goblins can take down the hardiest of Shoanti barbarians. As such, he has refined his skill with the bow to the point where he can kill many opponents before they even have time to raise a shield in defense. And that, of course, leaves him more time to crawl about the hidden lairs of long-forgotten peoples, rooting out their devious traps and thwarting them to get at riches thought lost to time.

Ah, true, true. I wasn't paying close enough attention there...Just went with Ranged Disarm instead. Oh, and I've updated my avatar profile with his info and a link to the CS. |
