Rahaal scowls, realizing that she doesn't have enough bandits close enough to call Abadar's judgement down on. Instead she aims her crossbow at the one bandit she has a really clear shot at...and by Abadar's guidance more than any skill with it, her shot hits home.

She then stands her ground and reloads her crossbow.

Crossbow, blessing (vs the mounted bandit in the entangle): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Confirm?: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 8
Just in case that confirms: 1d8 ⇒ 3

Liz, you know if you do that you're climbing into your own entangle, right? We had a break in there so you might've forgotten, but we discussed you coming up with a ranged weapon.

Rahaal sees Rhiann coming toward her. She waits until he is within range and then calls out, "You who defend the lawful and just, let the Judge of the Gods guide your hand!"

Wait til Rhiann is within 50' of me. Then immediately cast Bless, effecting: Rhiann, Liz, Fifi, Larelle, Angus, and Alyssa.
.
Then I'll use my move to pick up my loaded crossbow.

Rahaal stands to her full height and glowers.

"I shall not break bread with those who commit banditry and have the audacity to cloak extortion in the guise of fair and just taxation! You desecrate the very foundations upon which prosperous societies are built, and today you will surrender or feel the full rebuke of Abadar's righteous judgement."

Just talking for now. I'll delay to act after Liz, Rhiann, Larelle, and Angus.

Rahaal shudders, wondering what kind of people wake this early and then refuse coffee?

Once she's done, she turns to Oleg, "Thank you for the cup. I'll wash it when this fight is over, but I feel like I should be getting up on the wall now, and settle into a spot where I can't be seen."

Rahaal climbs up onto the wall, as shown on the map.

Rahaal nods to Roberts reply. "Well, good luck with your trapping...and with tracking down your partner!

"By the way, you mentioned having a good deal of experience with these bandits. Do you believe there are many bands working separately around here? Or one larger one?

"Assuming we succeed against the ones who arrive tomorrow, I'd like to know how many more compatriots our visitors might have, who might seek revenge."

After Robert leaves, she turns to her companions and says, "When the bandits come, I'd like to grant you all Abadar's Blessing, to help your blows ring true. I'll be able to extend it to any ally within fifty feet of me. And then, when the ruffians are entangled–if they refuse to drop their arms and surrender–I can channel The Judge of the Gods' displeasure upon them, that they may learn the strength of Law. When I do, I can only exclude a few allies. Otherwise it will be felt by all within twenty feet of me." Bless (50'); Channel Negative (30'). I've placed myself on the map, but happy to move if useful.

< Now >

While Rahaal laid down early in the evening, aiming to get a full night's rest, her nerves kept her up much of the night. When time came to rise and set the trap, she groaned wearily.

Stepping out into the yard, she is thrilled by the smell of coffee. "Praise Abadar! And may you be blessed by wealth and long life, Oleg. Yes, that's exactly what I need."

She stays at the fire to chat with her new comrades-in-arms while she sips her mug. Then she climbs the ladder and crouches down on the rampart (trusting that Rhiann will alert them all if something unexpected happens, and that it's best not to spook the bandits by them seeing multiple watchers).

Separate from the conversation with Robert

Rahaal turns to Rhiann. "Say, I couldn't help noticing the way you were looking over those catapults. I'm no engineer, but I'd wager that you know a thing or two about such devices. Am I right?

"If so, let me know if you'd like a hand working on them. I suspect they'll become important before too long, even if they can't be fixed in time for tomorrow's fight. I'm happy to learn how they work, if you'd teach me. And I can call on the God of Walls to bless your work on it, and guide your hand."

As they sit and chat, she asks, "You mentioned living off the land, and having more-than-passing experience with these bandits. Tell me, what do you do out here? And how long have you lived in these parts?"

Rahaal chews on a piece of dried venison as they talk. "Mmmmm. This meat's new to me too. Earthier than I expected, but I like it."

She nods to Alyssa as the sorceress considers where to wait. "Well said. I feel like we may be safest in two groups, one on the wall and another in front of Svetlana and Oleg's home...or even, as Liz mentioned, casting spells or shooting arrows from inside their home. If we split into too many groups–especially groups that are cut off from one another by Liz's grasping greenery–there's a chance that we give the bandits the opporunity to divide us and then overwhelm one or two at a time.

"Perhaps, if Rhiann and Larelle are to fight from the battlements, we should figure out who can stand beside Angus."

The Abadaran priestess turns to address him directly, "I can see that you, like Rhiann and Larelle, are battle-trained...but clearly Alyssa, Nadyra, Liz, and I aren't cut out to give you much aid in melee, if the bandits manage to break through Liz's weeds.

"I do believe that by invoking Abadar's stern judgement I can cause some to falter or even fall, but I also can't do so when too many allies are near, without fear of damaging them as well." Channel negative for 1d3 damage + daze on a failed save. 30' radius. Able to exclude 3 allies via Selective Channel.

"Svetlana, Oleg, let me know how I can be of use. I'll admit, I haven't many frontier skills...though I'm not afraid to learn. If by chance you could use any aid on the business front, I'm a fair hand at keeping books, assessing trade items, and sales.

"But otherwise, I'm happy to learn. And of course I can call on Abadar's insight to guide skilled folk's hands at crucial moments."

Rahaal arrives at the morning meal after saying her prayers to the Master of the First Vault.

"I slept...much better than I have the last several nights. Svetlana and Oleg, your beds are a blessing. Thank you!"

Been sick this weekend, not much posting energy at the moment, but Rahaal is happy to help out with whatever she's able today, in terms of preparations. Sounds like the catapults won't be fixed for tomorrow, but she can assist with that, if Rhiann is starting on it. Otherwise, at least, she wants to rehearse where they intend to be for the bandit ambush.

"OK, you clearly know horses better than I do.", Rahaal admits.

"And it's true that–if they get caught in the vines–bows may be our biggest worry. Alyssa, I'm familiar with the spell you mentioned. It's quite potent! It's not one that the Master of the First Vault grants to his faithful, so I'm glad you know it.

"If the vines are as successful as we hope, perhaps you can use it to target bows directly? I know that would be one bow at a time, but perhaps you could start with the leader? Or just be ready to frustrate the first bandit to try to shoot a bow? And if some fall to Nadyra's Sleep and to "

Could potentially ready an action to cast when someone tries to shoot a bow, maybe getting them to waste their action? Whether or not it's better to start with a area grease vs focus on the weapons probably depends on how many active archers there are within a given 10' square.
.
Entangle + Sleep + mass Daze (via alternative Channel) + greasing weapons seems like a brutal combination that'll make it very hard for them to fight back effectively. And if the decide to run, there's a good chance they'll have to do it without their horses.

Rahaal happily eats up her share of rabbit, potatoes, and carrots. When offered, the wine, she nods enthusiastically.

Sipping it, she thinks, Well, it's not Qadiran Syrah, but it's...something. And why else would I travel to these Northern wilds if not to sample and enjoy the local wares, such as they are?

As they discuss strategy for the battle to come, Rahaal says, "My only concern with having Alyssa–or any of us–cut off from the others is this: what if the bandits all descend together on the stable when they see someone casting from within? Will we be able to get to her aid quickly enough? Or are we better off keeping together, with the more martially inclined of us in front, and the rest of us further back?

"Or Alyssa and Nadyra...perhaps you two, along with Liz and I, can all be up on the wall? That has the advantage of us staying in fewer, larger groups. And perhaps it will be easier for folks on the ground to join us on the wall, if the need arises, since I believe Liz can keep her entangling vines away from the stairs to the wall more easily than she can the path between the stable and Oleg and Svetlana's home.

"For myself, if I can stay within thirty feet of the bandits there is more I can do to make them feel Abadar's stern judgement...but then I only have the capacity to protect a few nearby companions from it, when I channel Abadar's judgement upon people, so it's best if I don't have more than three allies near me."

Rahaal pictures walking six hours today (likely ending in the dark), only to sleep on the ground...walk six hours back tomorrow...and then wake before dawn to fight some mounted bandits–and shudders.

She tells herself, 'Rahaal bat Qajif v’Sawai, you have always worked hard, as your parents taught you. If this is what it takes to serve Abadar, you're going to suck it up.'

'Yes', she argues back, '...but do we really NEED to go?'

Rahaal is relieved when Angus (who surely won't have his stamina questioned) asks the same.

"Liz, I have no skill in crafting alchemical items, but I come from a merchant family and we often bought and sold them...enough that I know how expensive they can be. I pray that our charter becomes a profitable enterprise, over time, such that we can consider such things minor expenses. Until then, do we know exactly what we'd hope to buy? And how much we have available to buy it? If you have an item in mind, I may well know the market rate.

"I am open to going on this supply run if we agree there's something crucial to our plan, and that we can afford. Otherwise, I wonder if we are better off avoiding whatever beasts or bandits might ambush us in the woods, and instead stay here, making what preparations we might, and making sure we are fresh when the bandits arrive.

"What say you?"

Rahaal nods with sympathy as Svetlana tells the story. "There is nothing to be gained by throwing one's life away. You two did the right thing, both by going along when you needed to, and by calling for help.

"Tell me, if you would, what you would expect the bandits to do when they arrive, based on the last two times?"

Rahaal is curious about, and would ask clarifying questions to determine
- Is the gate usually closed when they arrive? Locked?
- - If so, will they expect to call to Oleg to open it?
- - For the sake of the trap, would Svetlana and Oleg be willing to let us wake before dawn and unlock it, so the bandits can 'let themselves in'?
- If the bandits come in on their own, if the past have they approached the house to make their demands? Or gone rummaging? Or split up to do both?

Rahaal, feels a touch of relief, hearing Rhiann speak confidently of dealing with bandits before.

Nodding, she says, "The lawless so often are fools. It is wise to use that to our advantage."

Turning to Liz, Rahaal adds, "Using plants to hold them in place sounds potent indeed! You are more than a gardener, I see. I think I've read of that spell, but not yet witnessed it. What god, art, pact, or school or arcane study is the source of your power?

"And that makes me realize, are there other talents–of yours, or others of us–that we should be aware of in our planning? In a fight, I want to understand all our resources and liabilities.

"As to myself. I do carry a light crossbow, and all young priests of Abadar learn the basics of it. I won't pretend I was ever a particularly good shot, though I'm better with that than a blade or longspear.

"More importantly, the resources you can bank on me to bring to the table are the ability to call on Abadar's fair blessing, that he might improve each of ours' accuracy, to provide healing if it is needed, and to give lawless foes a taste of Abadar's stern displeasure with injustice–a taste that may cause some to pause for a crucial moment, either in fear or remorse." Bless, CLW, and Channel negative, Dazing for 1 round on a failed save.

< Separately, when she next sees Svetlana, tonight or tomorrow >

"Svetlana, thank you again for your hospitality. I can't begin to say how much I needed that stew!

"As we prepare to mete justice out to the bandits, and their mockery of honest taxation. You should have your ring back! Toward that end, you mentioned their leader is a woman, and deranged. How is she best recognized, from a distance? Perhaps taking her out will break the band as a whole.

"How many bandits did she have with her, the last few times they came? And how were they armed?"

Rahaal listens as the others introduce themselves.

When Alyssa explains how personal her connection to this mission is, Rahaal's eyes soften. "I am sorry for your losses. Just as I am for yours, Svetlana and Oleg." Turning to Rhiann, Larelle, Liz, Nadyra, Alyssa, and Angus, she says, "If you stand against the lawlessness wreaked by banditry then I am honored to stand beside you.

"That said, before we risk our lives together, I need to be truthful with you. While I have learned some prayers to call down Abadar's blessing, and even sparred a bit with acolytes in the Brotherhood, I have yet to stand in earnest against violent foes. I will do what the Judge of the Gods demands of me, to the best of my ability...but you deserve to know that when these bandits come–or when we come across them–it will be the first time I expect to need to answer violence with violence."

As she speaks, her tone is neither defensive nor apologetic. Rather she maintains a steady matter-of-factness as she looks each of her fellow charter-holders in the eye, and says, "I know that we must count on one another, in the coming days. I will do my best to earn your trust, and I ask that you give me the same, that we may learn to act together as the aeons do, in perfectly unified order."

When Angus greets her, Rahaal shakes his hand, noting his calloused hands. "Well met, Angus of Elphenstone. I can see you know the value of a hard day's work, and I look forward to working with you."

Her mismatched eyes twinkle with warm memories as she adds, "I hail from the City at the Center of the World, Absalom, though the Church of Abadar sent me on a mission five months back to serve at Restov's quaint (if chilly) chapel to the Master of the First Vault...and then the Swordlords requested a cleric of Abadar to help fulfill this charter and, well, you know the rest."

When Svetlana motions her to sit, and eat, Rahaal feels a wave of relief (and exhaustion).

She gratefully takes a bowl, plops down in a not-padded-enough chair, says a quick prayer over the stew, and then digs in with gusto. "Ooooh I needed this, thank you!" She takes another bite...and realizes she's not sure she'll have the strength to get back up from the table afterward.

Between bites Rahaal turns to the others and asks, "And what of you? Pray tell your names, and who it was that sent you to join this charter."

I know everyone else has already introduced themselves before she arrived, but Rahaal would surely ask...and perhaps with her things go in different direction?

< Outside, moments ago >

Rahaal stretches her sore, cold muscles, and (slowly) gets off the back of the caravan wagon that she's spent the last three days on. ”Thank you, master Lonel, for your service to the Church of Abadar in bringing me here. May your road be free of banditry, and may the Master of the First Vault reward you justly for your kindness.”

As she approaches the door to the trading post, she takes a deep breath.

OK, this is it. Abadar, I promised to serve wherever Your church needed me, and I am always good to my word…but did it haaave to be so remote?

No, I am sorry. Master of the First Vault, I know Your plans exceed my understanding. Let me then approach this as I should all Your work, with strength and determination, trusting that I can serve You best by doing the work You require, to bring the light of civilization to these freezing-cold, lawless lands.

< Now >

The door opens, and in walks a woman in a gold-trimmed white kaftan–a lovely garment, but also one clearly not suited to either the cold of a Northern Spring or to life in the backcountry, and one that’s showing dirt and stains from the road already.

Her dark walnut-brown skin and thick, black, wavy hair–as well her kaftan and golden jewelry–make it obvious she is Kelishite…and a long way from home. She wears many small thin gold bangles around her wrists, has gold earrings dangling from her ears, and a large, beautiful golden necklace bearing the Key of Abadar, marking her as one of his clerics. She also has unusual (striking? perhaps unsettling?) eyes: one green, the other golden.

She stands only a few inches over five feet in height, and looks desperately out of place in the backcountry…yet even so, she has a magnetic, commanding presence about her.

With a short bow, she says, ”Greetings to the masters of this house. I am Rahaal, bat Qajif v’Sawai, sworn cleric of Abadar, the Judge of the Gods.

"I am here to fulfill the charter assigned by the Swordlords to the Restov chapel of Abadar.” Trying her best to stifle a frown, she thinks-but-doesn’t-add, ...And as the least-senior cleric in the entire chapel it falls on me to leave behind the civilized pleasures of Restov, humble though they are, and suffer the cold and wind out here.

Hearing talk of bandits as she walks in, Rahaal's frown deepens, and she shakes her head.

"I had heard that banditry was rampant in these–"(miserable, uncivilized)"–lands.

"And I take it then that you are to be my fellows in enforcing the Swordlords' charter? Be that the case, I swear to bring whatever strength the Master of the First Vault grants me to teach them the meaning of justice, that we may one day truly civilize these hinterlands.

"First though, I would die for something hot to eat right now, and that stew smells heavenly. Do you by chance have more?"

Angus, have you set up a Discord server before? Would you want to create one for us?

If no one else can sooner, I'm happy to...but I'm about to go on a 4 day camping trip, Tues-Fri, and am busy this weekend and Monday getting ready for it, so I won't have much bandwidth before next weekend.

And DM JR, thanks for letting us know, but real life interrupting is never a worry.

When you get a chance, please just turn on the Gameplay thread (for anyone who likes to Dot-and-Delete).

Cheers to all!

Hey yall, good to meet ya! And DM JR, thanks again for offering to lead this for us. I'm excited!

I've given each character at least a quick look over, and look forward to reading more, and getting to interact with yall in play.

About me
Like Angus (aka Robert), I've been roleplaying on and off since AD&D...though I had a long break from the early 90s to playing 3.5, which led me to Pathfinder. I still enjoy live gaming when I can, but I've really come to appreciate the strengths of PBP, including the ability to lean into playing characters I might not be able to pull off effectively IRL. (Nowadays when I play live it's mostly Powered by the Apocalypse games, including Avatar Legends, which my 11 year old daughter and I love to play together.

I live in California with my wife, daughter, and stubby little min-pin/chihuahua. Between work and family, I will sometimes get busy...but I love keeping games moving, and both the roleplay aspect and the stragic aspect of Pathfinder are great balances in my life...and if a rough stretch comes up and I need a bit more time to post (or I'll try to let yall know up front.

Rahaal
When you get the chance, I've got her full background, appearance, and personality–along with her stats–in my profile...but let me give a brief summary:

Storywise:
She's a fish-out-of-water, and (at least for now) a reluctant member of this expedition. To quote from

The post where I proposed her wrote:

She was born and raised in Absalom, and is a lover of city life....So why is she here? As is common for young Abadaran clerics in Absolom, Rahaal has been sent on a mission. A city person through and through, she’d hoped to be sent to an established church somewhere cosmopolitan. Instead...she’s been sent North to Restov.

(Well, at least it’s a city...of sorts. It can't be that bad, right?)

She arrived in Restov not five weeks ago and got to work helping to establish and grow the local chapel of Abadar. Four days ago, the chapel got a request to send a Cleric to join this expedition. It was a political favor that had to be responded to but none of the Clerics were actually interested. Rahaal, as the least senior, got stuck with it.

Rahaal is horrified by the idea of roughing it, but she's also nothing if not disciplined, and devoted to Abadar. Thus she finds herself in used, ill-fitting armor, heading out into the cold, buggy, Stolen Lands.

I hope that she'll be fun to explore as a fish-out-of-water urban bon-vivant...who may, slowly, start to grudgingly appreciate the natural world.

Mechanics / Party Roles:

Big picture: She's a Cleric of Abadar, with the Herald Caller archetype. In combat she'll rely on spells (buffs, summoning) and channel to debuff (since she can use to Daze foes for a round). When desperate, she'll fire her light crossbow.

A bit more detail: She's squishier than the average cleric (8 STR, 10 DEX, 12 CON, not proficient with Medium Armor or Shields) but will eventually be pretty good at summoning servants of Abadar to quell chaos and injustice. She also is a Negative channeler with the Rulership Variant Channel...which means that when living foes fail to save vs her channels they still only take 1/2 damage, but they're also Dazed for 1 round. The downside: she's mot a great healer at the moment...though I expect to memorize CLW, and expect that over time I'll try to get ahold of a wand of CLW to help patch folks up.

If there are ever spells you'd love to see from me, don't be shy!

Out of combat, she's a pretty good Diplomat, and good at Sensing Motive (+7 in each), and OK Perception/Spellcraft/K.Religion/Intimidate/Appraise (+4 in each)...but WOW, I love that Alyssa has a friggin' +14 to Diplomacy at first level!

Logistics
I'll second Angus' suggestion to open Gameplay for dot-and-delete. I love having the Campaign tab as my one-stop-shop to see if there are updates.

I'll also second his suggestion of Discord (assuming it works for others). My longest running and most involved games on the boards now also have a Discord server, and I think it helps keep us connected and things in motion. That said, I'll happily stick to just the forums if that's the group's preference.

What I'm curious about
In terms of the party, I didn't see an alignment for Alyssa or Angus (though I could've just missed it somehwere on your sheets).

This latter may be something just to learn/explore in game, but I'm also curious about everyone's characters' relationship to the gods in general, and to Abadar in particular. ;-)

Oh! And cohorts: I didn't give one too much thought yet (other than that they'd have likely also been sent along with her from the Restov chapel of Abadar). Honestly, if we have enough cohorts already with a party of 5, I don't need to have one. I could either just play exactly as she is, or take some other small boon...but I'm happy to make one too. Do yall see roles we need to fill? The only thing I think we *might* be missing is a trap-breaker...though I see that Rhiann's sister Larelle (who is CN so will definitely be fun for me to RP with) ;-) has Disable Device already, and looks like she might go toward Rogue eventually?

Hey DM JR, I went ahead and finished Rahaal up with the Herald Caller archetype, but could easily modify her back to archetype-less, if you'd prefer. (Likewise, if my read of the Rostlander trait–mentioned above–doesn't seem reasonable, let me know what your trait guidance would be.)

Her latest backstory + crunch are in her profile.

In terms of other questions:
1) Heirloom - before he died, Rahaal's father gave her a necklace with a golden key motif, that she always wears (and that functions as her holy symbol).
2) Cohort - rough plan is someone else sent with her from the chapel of Abadar (possibly a guard who'll go martial, or another adept, who'll eventually go cleric herself, depending on the needs of the party). I'm inclined to dig more into making the cohort once selected, and most importantly once I know what the party needs.

Thanks again for your consideration, and let me know if you have any questions!

Oh! One more thing actually (in addition to my question above about the Herald Caller archetype): All of the traits assume you're born-and-raised in or around Brevoy, at least somewhat.

I think Rostlander isn't hard to adapt to Rahaal. From Rostlander, "sensibilities of hard work winning well-deserved gains, the importance of charity and compassion, and the value of personal and familial honor" all mesh well with being raised by traveling merchants who worship Abadar in and around Absalom, and "Your hardy nature grants you a +1 trait bonus on all Fortitude saves" fits as well.

I just want to call out that Rahaal's background gives her a different motivation than Rostlander patriotism: At first, being in the wilderness will be a reluctant duty (though one she takes as seriously as anything the church of Abadar might charge her with). Over time, I suspect she'll develop her own genuine intrinsic motivation as she develops relationships with party and probably even love for the land...but I want that to take some time.

Any questions or concerns, about Campaign Trait selection, or in general?

Seeing that Andrezi still hasn't followed, Rahaal steps back outside. She grabs his shoulders to shake him...and immediately notices that he isn't just sleeping. With a check of his pulse she confirms what her intuition had told her.

She closes his eyelids and then--with a deep frown--she shuffles back inside just as Serafina asks about climbing skill. She looks herself over, weighed down in ill-fitting armor, and decides she doesn't need to answer that question herself. Instead she steadies her voice before speaking. "Comrades...I'm sorry to have to say this. Those bouts of bizarre sleep...they must've been more serious than Andrezi let on. He seems to have died of a stroke.

"I understand that we haven't fully explored this tower we'll be waiting out the storm in...but perhaps we should go out to say a few prayers for him first, to ease his journey to the Boneyard."

Rahaal listens to the discussion of what to build first with a troubled expression. What to build where, in what order? I don't doubt that it's important...but what do I know about it? What I want is a comfortable bed!

Now if we needed advice on courts or trade agreements perhaps, but...why was I sent out her in the first place?! Of course my superiors had their reasons but--(looking over her stained, sweaty traveling clothes, feeling the ache in her butt from riding all day)--I can't say I can fathom them. The wilds are no place for me.

When talk turns to where to explore yet, Rahaal nods. "I'm game to travel South on the other side of the river. I don't know if we'll encounter more servants of the so-called Stag Lord or what but it seems as good a place to explore as any.

"For tonight though, I need some food that doesn't come from a rations sack...and perhaps a game of Dancing Loons or Jester In The Corner? Something to make these wilds more bearable."
