"I must stress that the matters to which these inquiries pertain are both extremely sensitive, and of the utmost importance to the safety of Avistan, and indeed to all of Golarion. I ask that you keep these matters to yourself and trust in your discretion."

After exhausting what knowledge she can find from the books (her preferred domain), Raen turns to the wisdom of the gods. She travels to Kaer Maga, in the Bottoms district, to stand before the imposing spires of the Godsmouth Cathedral. She speaks to the nearest acolyte to request an audience with the High Priestess of Death, Delana Karaheis.

I am prepared to pay the 25 gold in offerings and 280 gold for the service of a Divination spell. Should Karaheis be willing to aid me herself, I will instead offer 500 gold in incense and 450 gold for the service of a Commune spell.

Sidenote: I could cast Sending and ask a favor of Vael to do the same. I was hoping to check at least one thing off my list before pulling anybody else in; perhaps if dealing with Naximarra proves too difficult for the present I can turn my attention to Dulcilene instead.

At length, Raen decides that knowing the Orb inhabitant's true name is of some value and worth pursuing. Force will not avail her here; she must find another way. She sets down the teacup and carefully peels open the old Thassilonian tome again. What secrets are hidden in the spaces between its scrawled runes?

And if the text should fail her, perhaps the priests of Pharasma at the Grand Cathedral in Korvosa, or even the Godsmouth Cathedral in Kaer Maga, might be persuaded to beseech their Lady for advice.

Looking particularly for any knowledge (or hint thereof) of how Baelgoroth's soul came to be trapped within the stone, or what might become of it if released. Though I may not find a definitive answer, I want to be certain that I have exhausted all possible avenues before I contact Naximarra via sending to bargain for the Orb's destruction.

I do not suppose there is a chance that I can break through the nondetection spell every once in a while? I should have at least some chance for anything short of CL 25.

Hrm. I might have been able to handle Naximarra alone, but a red dragon of that age together with Naximarra would be far beyond my power.

Raen paces on her island, cup and saucer in hand. An earthy redbush tea steams its fragrance into the air, competing with the flowering fruit trees that stand nearby. She turns the memory over again and again in her mind, pondering not the dialogue so much as the characters and setting.

Much of Raen's initial attention is focused on the matter of the Orb. The device remains hidden away in its extradimensional prison, for she dare not use it, but still it weighs like a lodestone in her mind. She thinks often of the dragon whose ancestor's soul remains trapped within its depthless confines. A dragon that undoubtedly still seeks the Orb.

Naximarra.

The bargain with Naximarra was simply enough: in exchange for the dragon's intelligence about the frost giant stronghold of Skirgaard, Raen and her companions committed to see to its dissolution as a blow to the Storm Tyrant's ambitions. But Naximarra made clear the motivations for this aid: to see the Orb's dragon-soul "freed." And that makes for a puzzle. For Raen has no wish to see the Orb used for evil, and knows that its power of enslavement cannot truly be used for good, so its destruction is desire she shares with Naximarra -- if its soul were to pass on to Pharasma in the Boneyard. But should it instead take on a corporeal form... she would be responsible for unleashing yet another terrifying force for ill onto Golarion.

Her first task, therefore, is to acquire every scrap of knowledge, lore, or conjecture about the Orb that she can. Time does not seem to press, so she pursues both breadth and depth. She first begins with several of the great libraries of the Inner Sea: the Arcanimirium and the Forae Logos in the Wise Quarter of Absalom, the Founder's Archive and Museum of Ages in Magnimar, and the Jeggare Museum and Academae archives in Korvosa.

Depends somewhat on findings, but the likely next step is to start casting Greater Scrying on Naximarra.

The Untethered Harbor is a small island in a mist-shrouded sea. The island is dotted with bright little meadows, tall trees bearing ample fruits and nuts, and clean streams of water that flow from a spring near its center and on over small waterfalls and into little pools. A small stone house sits by the spring, its walls lined with bookshelves, and numerous covered workbenches can be found in various glades and clearings. The night on this island lasts only two hours, while the day lasts twenty-two, and each season lasts only a third as long as on Golarion. Anyone who passes through the fogbank around the island eventually breaks through the mist, only to find themselves back at the island. The entirety of the Untethered Harbor feels to be a place of peace and learning, and any with evil in their hearts who travel there find it unwelcoming.

In the Untethered Harbor lies a room unlike any other. Even when not present, Raen's intensity hangs in the air. Artifacts mundane and fantastic fill the room, albeit in a well organized fashion. For years now Raen has spent time each day within the room. A presence unknown, abstracted, brooding secret, looks over the contents. Two items in particular stand out.

The first is a massive piece of stone. Upon the stone is a spiral of writing. The spiral takes up the entire stone, spanning a diameter twice the height of a man. The Jotun letters have faded slightly, as the stone is so old that the exhale of Groetius has begun to take its toll. For this is The Tale of the Deathless Frost. It is not a replica.

The other is a notebook, well constructed, but well worn. The left hand page contains a genealogical tree. The hand is not Raen's. The names and notation are written in Hallit. The right hand page contains numerous notes, these in Raen's own hand. There is name upon this page, circled with a question mark next to it. The name is Ilivorr Karanasi. From the mark is an arrow leading to another circled term, Frozen Tears.

Here Raen continues the search for answers. And here Raen will find them...

Some time after the events at Zephyr Hall, Raen settles into something of routine in her private demesne. Perhaps out of habit, from long months of adventuring in much more deadly locales, she weaves several spells each "morning" that grant her the powers of flight, darksight, great health, secret armor, and even a feeling for when anyone might manage to look over her shoulder. Overland Flight, Darkvision, False Life, Mage Armor, and Detect Scrying. The bulk of her days she spends about the island, studying and reading, crafting and tinkering, gardening and harvesting. For her short nights, she sets an Alarm before taking her rest in a bower among the limbs of her largest fruit tree.

On most days, she chooses one of her old companions to check in on, weaves an image of their likeness, and opens a window to their presence in her mind. Silent Image plus Greater Scrying on Doxon, Hamilton, Ushyle, Vael, or Whistle Pig on each weekday. Effective Will DC 28. On other days, she uses the same magicks to keep tabs on her enemies.

On occasion, usually in the early "spring" and "autumn" -- only once every two weeks, in Raen's world -- she returns briefly to the Material Plane for a closer look at old connections, or else for raw materials or new spells she might need. On these days, she prepares a slightly different suite of spells; somewhat more teleportation magic and somewhat less divination, among other adjustments. With each journey, she puts in place a Contingency: should she ever be rendered helpless, dying, or dead, a Teleport spell shall take her to Torag's Forge in the Mindspin Mountains. With each journey, her confidence grows that her old companions have found their new paths, and will tread them well.

In concert, a conviction that she must meet with unfinished business grows too.

The days at Cloudforge seem to pass slowly; a place of peace, knowledge, and creation is a welcome change from the road of desperation and destruction that had been trod for many moons. Raen leaves in Jorifah's care all astronomical plates, two thousand pounds in spare silver, all cloud engineer badges, roc rider badges, and scopes of stormsight, and of course the Cloud Diadem itself. She enjoys conversing with the many giants about the castle complex, observing the engineers at their reparative work, and meandering among the teeming shelves of the library (and of course copying down a few notes for herself).

Spells:

Time passes unhurried, deliberate, and altogether pleasant. At length, Jorifah calls the three Trunauans together again for a parting.

Before Raen can ponder, Ushyle can prepare for combat, or Whistle Pig can check the door, a limnus of warm light begins to glow around its edges. The door itself fades from reality. Beyond is a fantastic land that is not Golarion. The mere sight of the fantastic castle beyond fills the Heroes with a sense of peace and comfort. Jorifah, blind but sighted, simply smiles. She leaves the three heroes there, giving parting words as she goes. "It seems we are not the only place to offer succor."

Raen can feel a strong pull as she gazes through the door. To leave her world, its troubles, and its anguish behind. To seek wonders anew. To travel beyond limits. She knows not what lies beyond, not exactly, though an inkling forms in her mind, and she smiles at the thought.

But she knows, too, that it is not yet her time to pass through. Peaceful as the days have been, she cannot altogether keep from her mind what she buried beneath Zephyr Hall's heavy flagstones. Nor the dragon she knows still covets that secret. Nor the fire giant queen's parting threat. Nor of those who sought to use the Storm Tyrant himself as a pawn.

No, it is not her time.

"Not yet for me, I think," she murmurs to her companions, after gazing a long while through the portal to another world. "If it calls to you, I bid you go." She waits a while before speaking again. "I must converse once more with Jorifah, then I shall take my leave of Cloudforge. Should you wish to return to Trunau, or any corner of this world, I would be glad to take you there." She turns back towards the surface.

She finds Jorifah standing on the bridge, contemplating the wind as it whistles through Zephyr Hall's battlements. "Master Jorifah, you have been a kind and generous host. I must ask of you one final courtesy: that I may enter Zephyr Hall, alone, to rid it of one last danger. This must never be known, just as the existence of Cloudforge itself must never be known."

The Gallery is still and empty, the windows shrouded by fog brought in by the late evening sea-breeze. Raen takes a deep breath, staring down at the floor. She gently sets an unadorned leather pouch, crafted carefully on journey here, on a nearby sill. Then her hands and voice begin to sing. The stone along the hallway slithers and slides, encasing the Varisian entirely in a pitch-black box of solid rock, blocking out even the windows, rendering her completely and utterly alone. In the darkness, the wizard’s form warps and grows. Her skin turns to scales the blood-red color of a dying sun. Thick leathery wings sprout from her back, and a spiked tail swings behind her. Smoke fumes from her nostrils, as her massive draconic form settles on its haunches. The dragon’s features shift and clarify into a familiar, leering face. Then the stone at her feet is drawn upward, making a box within a box, before cracking and shattering as huge chunks fall away.

And in the center, an orb like molten glass.

Raen acts quickly, never looking directly at the thing, and never touching it. It dances into the air as if on a puppet's strings, floating towards the waiting maw of the leather pouch. It disappears inside, and the pouch cinches shut. Raen lets out her breath, only now realizing that she had been holding it in. Her hands dance again, and the dragon shrinks down into a woman once more, and the broken stone returns to the hole in the floor, and the encasing box slides away back into the walls, and the grey half-light filters in again through the windows. Raen scoops up the pouch and buries it deep in one of her many pockets, relief heavy on her.

She leaves Zephyr Hall by way of the bridge, never to return.

Many moons pass. She travels far and wide seeking knowledge that will aid her in the tasks ahead. Raen meets privately with Halgra, impressing upon the Chief Defender that Trunau could ever call upon her if in need, and that she had left a scroll with Agrit for that purpose. Whether from a vantage near or distant, she watches as each of her companions settles into their own next chapters, their own new tales, and is contented. For now, at least, the only one she need risk is herself. And there is much left for her to do.

A small popping sound echoes in the vale above Skirgaard. Raen, dressed in long flowing robes of blues and whites, kneels down to gently brush away some snow from the brow of the mountaintop. She stops, for poking out of the ice and snow is a still-red rose petal, and there the handle of a mug and of a hammer, and over there the leather of a boot and a gauntlet. A single tear rolls down her cheek to fall among them, and then she covers them with snow again.

After one last look at the vast mountain range stretching north and south, where so much had transpired, where so much life was bought and so much stilled, Raen begins what she came here to do. Her voice rises, and her hands trace arcs of reality to and for, weaving and weaving and weaving, creating a tapestry that belongs truly and only to her, shaping a world that is wholly wrought from her own mind. Her song flows down the mountainsides, echoing through hours of toil. In time, this island between dimensions will come to hold a rich forest with bounding streams and waterfalls, trees of fantastical fruits and wild nuts, days and seasons accustomed to Raen and not the other way around, and a natural feeling of goodness and wholesomeness that ever tingles the senses. This place is to become her residence, her library, her workshop, and her safehouse all in one; a solitary eyrie, perhaps, but with peace and comfort and quiet whenever she desires it.

At last, the song and dance conclude; the weave is finished. With a last echoing crack in the mountain air, Raen vanishes from Golarion.

Raen sets the great castle in motion, heading on a bearing of southwest by west. For the journey, she takes as her demesne the observatory atop the southeastern tower, and spends much of each day exploring the library a level below. There, she hopes to find some record of Zephyr Hall's making, the workings of its engines, or even of Renfal's old master.

She takes a few minutes each day repairing what damage she can about the castle, with careful employ of her own skill as an engineer and as a practitioner of powerful arcane magics. Before long, the breaches in the Gallery and the main hall are both stopped with makeshift repairs.

She also returns to some of her crafting. She channels some of Whistle Pig's own primal fury and hatred of giants into his sling staff, which she hopes will relieve the anguish the halfling feels himself. For Ushyle, she weaves a headband bearing the likeness of Akazerath, but wrought in gold thread. She stores some memory of the dragon's terrible roar into the fabric--a fear that was overcome. And into his bracers, she weaves a powerful abjuration.

Crunch:

For the library: happy to make any appropriate check.

For the repairs: T10 Engineering = 29, and I can probably get a Heroism buff (+2) from Ushyle for 31. I can dedicate at least 3 Wall of Stone spells and 3 Stone Shape spells each day. Additionally, I will use the Lyre of Building once each week.

For the crafting: all completed by end of the second week. WP gets Giantbane added to his sling staff (5000 gp cost). Ushyle gets a Headband of Unshakeable Resolve and Spellguard Bracers (total cost 5300 gp).

Raen delivers each item at dinnertime, when she joins them for a frugal meal the pair had gathered from the giants' remaining stores. Knowing that the food may run out, and she needs none, she limits herself to only a nibble here and there. But she is thankful for the company.

After some time out beyond the Varisian Gulf, Raen adjusts the castle's heading to south by west. A few minutes before meeting the others for dinner, she finds a secluded corner of the rookery to send a message far across the waves.

The knock on the door comes when expected. "Good morning, Vael," Raen says, opening the door. "I am ready to begin. Are you?"

"Aye, I'm ready," the dwarf says resolutely. "This is my future, and I appreciate your help."

"Good." Raen sets a key and a few coins on the sill. "Now hold tight!"

*POP*

They reappear in a familiar forest, in a familiar grove. The Mindspin Mountains rise high on either side, and a stillness in the air speaks to a true remoteness. Somewhere nearby, the sun glints on a broad lake. Tulia gasps, but Vael only chuckles. "I see what you did there."

"I thought this a fitting locale for what we are about to undertake." Raen smiles softly, before her expression turns serious. "Now. This magic is not for the faint of heart. What you desire will take time. Do you trust me?"

Vael nods. "I always have. And I always will."

"Then let us begin." Raen's hands and voice dance like raindrops on a pond, pulling threads from distant reaches of the universe, weaving a delicate melody in its fabric. Vael's form begins to change. His beard puffs and billows, then his eyebrows, then his hair. Within a moment, the whole of Vael has become insubstantial, a mass of cloud and wind, shifting this way and that, comically struggling to keep its heavy armor afloat.

"Well, that is not quite right," Raen chuckles softly, like a pianist offering dry commentary between chorus and verse, while the hands keep playing. Vael's form never quite settles; his hair has turned to lightning, and the half-plate eases again around a more human body.

"Almost there." In an instant, Vael seems to shrink into himself, growing smaller and smaller. The hair crackles and turns shock-blonde. At the last moment, butterfly wings sprout out her back.

And there, at last, is Vael Oakfist, the lyrakien azata.

For the first time in a long time, Raen rests well that night. Though they have won a great victory, the morning brings sadness: the company will soon be parting. The journey has been taxing, almost beyond belief, and yet...

After breakfast, Raen affixes one of the rider's badges to her tunic as the others make ready for departure. "I shall return before sunset," Raen says to Ushyle and Whistle Pig. To the latter, she adds with a smile, "Try not to get into too much trouble."

At her instruction, Vael and Doxon join hands with Hamilton, mounted and ready on Sammi. With a word and a wave and a touch to Vael's shoulder, the five are gone.

Raen plucks the ring from the Tyrant's cold finger and sets it down in front of Doxon. "A task for Agrimmosh, I think," she says, mimicking the smashing of a hammer-fist into her palm.

"Then it is decided. Tomorrow, I shall transport Hamilton, Doxon, and Vael to Trunau, and pay my respects to Halgra, and to Agrit. Accompanied by Whistle Pig and Ushyle, I shall then depart with Zephyr Hall over the sea. Where you wish to go once that task is done, I shall take you."

"There is much for us to do with what remains of this day, to rid this place of dangers, and to gather what remains of the Tyrant's effects, and those of his followers. Whistle Pig, could you please accompany me to search the halls and towers of the castle? Vael, would you be so kind as to have the golem accompany us as well?"

"One other matter. I am confident that the hidden cache we uncovered in the lower levels was loot forcibly taken from communities in the Mindspin Mountains and beyond. I suggest that, at minimum, we attempt to return the coinage and stones to those communities that survive. Trunau, too, suffered by design of Volstus, and perhaps a portion of that treasure should be offered to its coffers. Perhaps those that will make their home in Trunau could dedicate some effort to finding other communities for reparations as well."

She turns to Ushyle and Vael, understanding that her cryptic answer would not satisfy them. "Renfal had a mentor long ago, who still knows the old ways. I believe he yet lives. He and his people have made their home across the waves, far beyond the noisome conflicts of the Inner Sea. I intend to find him, at the western edge of the Arcadian Ocean. I have neither the skill nor the knowledge to keep Zephyr Hall in working order for long, nor could I -- or we -- inhabit and defend it alone. Volstus and his ilk once stole this home; Tytarian and his captains had such designs, too. I believe that rightful task is to return the Hall to those who made it, and who can again make it whole."

"As for me... I do not think I shall be returning to Trunau. I am willing to transport each of you where you wish to go, of course, including Bloodmarch Hill if that is your desire. But the more I consider the matter... I wish to take Zephyr Hall over the sea. West."

"I do not expect, or ask, any of you to undertake such a journey with me. You have each earned your rest, a hundred times over. And Trunau is as safe now as it will ever be."

"At the end," Raen says again after a while, "and yet not quite. Much remains to be done. I fear that the castle is not yet emptied of dangers: something still lurks in the fountain a level below. There may yet be traps and wards meant to do us harm. We ought to remain careful, and thorough."

"As for what becomes of Zephyr Hall... there remain tribes of cloud giants in the world, who might wish to restore its prior purpose of peace." Raen glances at Whistle Pig for a moment. "Peaceful giants, never under the Tyrant's yoke. Or the Knights of Ozem might find it a gainful asset in their Long Watch. But the Hall's inner workings are intricate and delicate, and as yet even I do not yet understanding the minutiae of its engineering. With time, bereft of maintenance and care from skillful hands, its power may fade."

She turns back to gaze at the horizon, beyond the edge of the breach. "I could spend years learning the engine's rhythms, to know its moods and changes. And... there is one, still, who might remember the old trade-skills. But the journey is far."

The several Raens in the hallway stand still for a moment. Before long, a second larger set comes slowly out of the fog to stand near its fellows. All take in the sight of tyrant and dragon, united in death more completely than they were in life.

Rising once more into the air, all fourteen Varisians float over to the waiting elementals. She thanks them for their service, each in their native tongue, and bids them go.

A few seconds later, there are but nine wizards, and Whistle Pig and Ushyle return to view. Raen stands at the edge of the breach and watches as the Tyrant's lesser horrors make their escape. Raen will attempt to identify each as they go; please let me know if you want Knowledge rolls. "Our task is done, yes," she says heavily. "As is Renfal's." She leaves unsaid her conviction that the castle is not yet emptied of dangers, and glances only once towards the stairs in the southeast. She leaves unsaid too, for now, Renfal's final message.

She turns back to the carnage, and to her companions. A small, tired smile rests on her face. "I am overjoyed to see each of you still living, at the end."

"No." Raen's stern chorus of voices cuts through the chaotic scramble she unleashed, piercing like a knife of chilling ice, commanding an end. "No more. Her projection touches the flagstone at its many feet. A ripple in the stone follows the wave that Doxon sent only seconds ago, moving towards the orb.

And suddenly a hole in the stone opens before the rolling orb, swallowing it whole, and then closing ominously shut.

Stone Shape of my own, with the intent of burying the Orb within the Gallery's flagstone floor, as deep as I am able. I have 25 cubic feet to work with, so I figure I can bury it at least 5' deep once accounting for the small trace to the orb, the orb's diameter, the stone needed for the opening, and the stone needed for the closing.

Placement dependent on its path. As for the boar-spear element, up to the GM on whether/how it works, but here is my pitch. Similar to other single-use spells such as disintegrate, I suggest an attack roll of +27 (CL+Int+GoodHope+Haste). For damage, I suggest "charge reflection" rather than the ordinary "double damage" for a braced weapon (mostly because coming up with a suitable set of dice is hard). So whatever damage the ypotryll would do on a charge, it instead does on itself if the spear hits. I would also suggest that a successful hit automatically destroys the spear (but not the wall itself).

Looking through the eyes of her nearer double, Raen readies a spell for the moment the ypotryll gets moving.

READIED ACTION:

As the ypotrll charges, Raen conjures via Wall of Stone a spiked stone wall directly in the beast's path, not far from its target--taking advantage of its gathered momentum. A wall, nearly a foot thick, now stands athwart the ypotryll's path, and from it protrudes a sharpened stake of stone, not unlike a boar spear. Probably nuts, but I am trying for a 20'w x 15'h stone wall put in the way, with a spike on the front that acts as a polearm effectively braced against a charge.

Wall would have Hardness 8 and 180 hp, with the spike obviously easier to destroy. Break DC for the wall is 44.

Both copies of Raen end a spell with a fiery flourish. A huge column of flame erupts in the southeastern tower, taking on a roughly humanoid shape. Raen commands both the new arrival and the nearby auran guard to assault the ascending monstrosity. Will deal with elementals in my next post.

Meanwhile, one version of Raen races to the northwest, taking up a position just behind Hamilton. The Varisian points an accusing finger at Nalbia. "Rage has lost you your mind."

The sound of crystal shattering echoes softly in a momentary quiet. Feeblemind on Nalbia. Will DC 24, but she takes a -4 penalty on the roll.

At the other end of the hall, the second instance of Raen flits closer to Vael, and splits into nine interlocking copies. Quickened Mirror Image (max 8 images): 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
