Since they are sworn to the Ruby Prince, do they remove themselves from the society since they are forbidden to switch factions, do they automatically join the Scarab Sages as that is the evolution of their faction, or does the radical shift in the nature of their service allow them to choose a new faction? I am vastly interested in this as well. Since effectively, they aren't leaving Osirion, rather Osirion left them. makes sense to me to allow in this unique circumstance a full release from the binds of their faction. but you could also say that Amenopheus is somehow able to retain control over their will and keep them in his service rather than the Ruby Prince himself. I'm in this camp as well. I'm a little curious how the Risen (and their boon) will be handled - or, if the coordinators and such will take time to address it. I'm hoping they do, but, I think that they'll address each faction's change in mechanics.
But, the thing of it is that I can't think of another faction boon that is so inherently tied to serving the Pharoah as the Risen are. By definition, we're absolutely sworn to the defense of the Pharoah, his family, and the Nation. I was always just a little uncomfortable with taking orders from Amenopheus, but now that he's been officially outcast, I don't know how the Pharoah would take it if I was still working for him. ...
I'm at 11.2 and only need one more game (technically two, for half-credit) to retire into the Eyes of Ten, and module play ... but, it's more about the idea of what happens to my character; it's an RP thing.
I guess this is the first time that I've been glad I've only gotten to play twice in the last year, since I really don't want to retire him. I guess I'll find out in a month, long before I play another game.

A heavily built man with a stoic, stone-like countenance and wrapped in greyish-brown traditional Osiriani robes approaches and sits silently, gesturing his seneschal forward. The somewhat thin servant steps forward, and speaks softly and politely, but his voice carries clearly across the room.
"Master Amenopheus, Qa'Pelos the Risen brings you his greetings and lauds you for your long and storied service tot he throne and our nation.
While Master Qa'Pelos is pleased to hear of the great possibilities that lay before us in recovering more of the lost histories of Ancient Osirion, he is concerned about loyalties.
The Risen are known to serve our nation and his eminence Pharaoh Khemet III, the Ruby Prince. But, given recent events, and the banishment of your most honored personage from the Pharaoh's court, Master Qa'Pelos is concerned that there is a conflict of interest in serving the throne, the nation, the Old Gods, and the Sapphire Sage.
Can you, or anyone else, give us assurance or relief in knowledge that if any amongst the Risen stand alongside the Pathfinder Society and the Jeweled Sages that they shall not also suffer the same unfortunate banishment that has befallen you?"
The Seneschal retreats to his master's side, and Qa'Pelos the Risen sits stoically in near silence, with very little effecting his stone-like visage. He quietly murmurs, "Verily." and maintains his composure.

But, I've wanted a remake of the class for *ages* now! :)
I just ordered my hardcopy!! OMG, OMG, OMG!! I can't WAIT for it to get here!
Rob ... you're absolutely right! I didn't realize until just a bit ago that there was the other book!!
I've been away for a few months, and heard about the new art that Liz just posted just a while ago (via the FB Group "Pathfinder Art".
It looks like *this* Egyptophile is gonna have a good few months with the Setting book, Player's Companion, and the AP!! By Ra, this is gonna be a GOOD Christmas!
I can't WAIT to see this. Especially since the cover art has been released! It looks FANTASTIC!!
...
Since it's been said that much of the material from "Land of the Pharaohs" will be updated, I'm gonna start a ritual chant for the next couple of months:
"Come on, Living Monolith update! Come on, Living Monolith update!"
I can't WAIT to see this and People of the Sands!

Qa'Pelos nods stoicly in approval and appreciation of the men who approach Amenopheus offering their findings and possible leads to a cure. He gestures simply with a bare, stony hand, indicating something to his seneschal.
The polite, if somewhat bookish, man again appraoches some of the people in the faction house, and converses with them, asking questions and offering answers codially.
"Many thanks are to be given, gentlemen. It is my Master's Most fervent prayer that the Ruby Prince shall soon recover from this grave affliction. He wishes to ... why, yes, my master is in fact Qa'Pelos the Risen, one of the pharaoh's personal Risen Guard ... he wishes to inquire whether there are any known relations between any of these leads? He is quite concerned that our esteemed Sapphire Sage is playing this rather dire situation inordinately close to the vest, so to speak."
Qa'Pelos nods quitely, as his stony gaze sweeps those in the room, as if he were both looking for something and seeing deep into the ether, percieving things beyond mortal sight.
Just want to add a "thanks" for the posts, guys ... is it just me, or do we really not know a whole lot about what's going on with the faction plot, other than the mission goals that we've gotten in scenarios?
Qa'Pelos walks in quietly, preceded by a servant, and takes a seat with a stony, inexpressive face. The seneschal politely approaches those present, asking after the health of the Ruby Prince.
"My master has just returned from visiting his merchant interests ... yes, thank you, his carpet weavers do well for him ... and he has heard little of the condition of the Ruby Prince after his tragic affliction. Pray tell, have you word of the search that has gone out for a cure?"
I haven't gotten to play much in the way of Season 4, and I am curious (before my first game after a few months) what's been going on with our goals and such. I've heard that we're not doing well in the running, and since there's so few posts here in Faction Talk, I'm concerned. Thanks for any info!!! :D
Okay ... You know what? Can we stop the bashing already?
All this talk of how it is "wasted", "useless", or that there's "better place" or ways to put a skill point to use is downright rude. If you don't like it that way and want to play toward mechanical benefit, that's great fun, and you're welcome to it.
I, for one, enjoy building a believable character that has a life outside the Pathfinder Society that involves things he's learned which reflect his interests as an individual. There's nothing wrong with that. I am maxed out as a Silk and Carpet Weaver ... I have a shop, a caravan, and a mercantile ship, all paid for with Prestige.
I like my story. And there's nothing "wasted" about it.
Qa'Pelos watches the orcish man, with stony eyes. Though clearly stoic in demeanor, he seems contemplative. As the stranger discorporates, his eyes widen, but he gives away little else away in regards to his thoughts or feelings on the matter. His face seems placid, but it also seems that this may be because his skin is clearly is somewhat stony and thick, giving him a visage similar to that of a carved statue.
He sits resolutely at his table, while a man - seemingly his servant - fetches his drinks and food for him. Another sits nearby working with what look like ledgers from a business and discusses them with Qa'Pelos. All are adorned in traditional Osirion garb.
In a thickly accented baritone that is level and even, he occasionally simply says, "Indeed" when replying to the seneschal. He appears to notice the weapon being discussed, and nods politely to the man bearing it.
Qa'Pelos enters the door of the Lodge room, after it is open by his seneschal, and strides forth purposefully, but with a serene, steady demeanor. He looks about the room with a stoic, stony face, and asseses those who have begun to assemble. He carries the Pharoah's Crook of Order and wears traditional Osirion clothes and the accutrements of one of the Risen Guard. He nods his head slightly, almost making a bowing gesture to those in the room, and sits, his bald, oiled pate glistening in the afternoon light.
He seems satisfied at the small gathering, and in a deep baritone, he says simply ...
"Indeed."
The thick, broad-shouldered Osiriani merchant looks about, seemingly with curiosity, as if other notables and faction leaders are about. Finally, he covers his bald pate and is escorted out by his seneschal and porters.

I've been eyeing this thread for awhile, wondering if I should post or not. Since I just had my first game in 11 months yesterday, and Qa'Pelos is not longer on hiatus, I decided I would come up with a backstory about his absence from adventuring, what he's been doing that whole time, and a way to re-introduce him to adventuring! Turns out, he became a merchant, and put to good use those ranks in Craft(Weaver) that he's been amassing since Season 0!!
The door gently opens, with a tinkling of the bell above the doorframe. A tall, solidly built Garundi man wearing an Osirion cloth headdress enters, the door being held by a slightly older gentleman who bears all the trappings of a merchant's seneschal. The large man is dressed in thick, grey robes adorned with leather braids, tassles and shining medalions and bears a strange jeweled setting upon his brow. He steps toward the bakery racks, eyeing the pastries within.
The seneschal approaches the proprietor and says, "Pleasant day, goodman Baker. I am the proxy of Qa'Pelos of Sothis, mercer of silks and fine cloths, and famed agent of the Pathfinder Society. He is preparing to host a very large party, introducing certain select members of the trading councils of The Coins to his busniss ventures. He is to serve four courses, each in a different location about the city. Aperitif and apetizers will be served while touring his caravan, which even now sets up pavillions outside the city. Chilled wines and small sandwiches are to be served on the deck of his mercantile vessel. Lunch is to be served on the veranda of his Artisan's shop which is putting out awnings for the occasion, and dessert and liqueurs will be served following the meal in a well-appointed hall at the Osiorion Embassy here in the city.
We have checked around, and you are the most highly recommended Confectioneer within 50 miles of the city. You are hereby requested to attend the event, but also, to have your cooks prepare and cater the most auspicious affair."
The quiet man looking at pastries turns his head tranquilly, nods respectifully once, and blinking his eyes languidly simply says, "Verily."
So, lots and lots of PP spent on vanities, because I didn't think that I would be playing him again! So, now he's got quite the setup!

Though this is difficult to mimic in game terms, you can have the character prepare for just about anything. Have the best and most diverse equipment and alchemy available. Carry a few one-shot magic items that are highly situational. Make stashes of money and magic at various locations around the world. Remember to help people and go back to them when you need a return favor. All of this will foster the aura of wisdom, preparedness and experience that an immortal should learn over time.
Wow ... *this* is great stuff!
I hadn't ever thought of this kind of thing when I wrote this thread! It just so happens that Qa'pelos is a merchant that owns a shop, a caravan and a trading ship. He could certainly have all kinds of things in caches all over the place. Those one-shot items, and specific use items could be easily placed. And then there's the contacts in other cities. They're expensive, but, I could easily buy them with Prestige Points - there's a vanity for just that.
Thanks for the tips and ideas on the character, Obirandiath!

Another spell-like ability I would like to discuss the mechanics of for PFS in regards to the Living Monolith PRC is Tombsight. Quote: Tombsight (Su): A living monolith of 4th level can perceive the balance of life and death within those they see, as if using deathwatch and detect undead simultaneously. This power can be used at will and lasts as long as the living monolith concentrates. Using this ability is not an evil action. The text of the ability says "those they see", and refers to two spells. Those spells in turn refer to "creatures" as the objects which can me seen. The spells allow Qa'pelos to see general states of those surrounding him. (Living, Dead, neither Living nor Dead, Undead, injured, healthy, etc.)
My question is how this would appear to him. While I understand that creatures are called out for mechanics reasons, I am curious what the ability would "look like". That is, could he see an aura of sorts of the living grass and trees? Would he see everything in a sort of colour-shifted weird reality (like when Bilbo or Frodo put on the One Ring in LotR)? Would the air itself be coloured with the living tings that are in it? How would he percieve things made of wood? Perhaps they are seen as "dead" since they were once living? How would this affect illusions - certainly he would know that they weren't real creatures because they wouldn't register as living, I should think.
Are there other unique aspects of this ability of which I'm not thinking? How could this be used legally in PFS OP in unique ways to do cool stuff with it?
Mark Moreland wrote: ... if you get this ability and then retire, you're likely to live for a long, long time unless someone poisons the food you need to eat. But as an adventurer, being immortal is only as good as your ability not to die. Ha-hah! That's great, Mark, thanks. That's very, very clear. Especially calling out the specific things like dehydration and suffocation. I certainly hope that I don't end up with anyone that would want to poison Qa'pelos, but, I can imagine a person becoming somewhat overly caustious (if not downright paranoid) about the few things that could kill him! It certainly will make for great RP!

" ... I have no rival, no man can be my equal! Take me to the future of your world! Born to be Kings ... Princes of the Universe ... "
<ahem> Alright, sorry about the 20-year-old theme song.
The question that I want to put to to the PFS members is about the Living Monolith class. The reason that I am asking here rather than in rules is that I don't want homebrew answers, I want an answer specific to the organization in which I play. I don't want suposition, I am looking for a quorum in the version of the game I actually play.
So ... in the Living Monolith PRC, from Osiorion, Land of the Pharoahs, p.22, the Monolith gains a 10th level ability that makes him immortal. Yes. You read that right. They are immortal. As in: they do not die. They become living statues that are entirely ageless. My question is what that realistically means in game terms. There's a provision that the Monolith can be killed, but, it's just a generally vague thing. The text reads as follows: Pathfinder Companion: Osirion, Land of the Pharoahs wrote: Master Ka Stone (Su): At 10th level, a living monolith must undergo a final Ka stone ritual, replacing his current stone with one worth at least 10,000 gp. Upon completing this ritual, the living monolith becomes immortal. He ceases aging (though any aging effects already accrued remain in place) and becomes immune to energy drain and death effects, though he can still be killed by other means. So ... how does this affect my character (Qa'pelos) when he gains the level (which should hopefully not be inthe not-too-distant future). how does immortality work? (Ask a Highleander, right?) Obviously, combat can kill him. How about starvation? Does he still eat and drink normally? How about sleep? Can he use his statue spell-like ability to rest? Or does he still require normal sleep? ... is it the same as being mortal, only without the aging that goes along with it?
I'm sure this may seem obvious to some, but, I often write short stories for my characters, and I am trying to get into the fluff so that I can really write the character well, and use that to RP at the table. Depending on the response to the thread, I may expand it to discuss the rules applications of other class abilities.
Oh, and thanks for the help and fun suggestions!

Really, I wish that since it can be used to make trip attacks with, I wish it had a +2 to trip attacks, like most (many?) other trip-weapons do.

Yep, so, grandfathered in ... I hdan't thought about that the Ultimate Combat will be setting-nuetral, and so, I would have to agree that it's not likely it's not likely to appear there.
So, I play an Osirion fighter/Living Monolith. ... and he carries a great big sword. Two-handed Osirion Khopesh, to be precise.
As I understand it, with the printing of the new Setting book for Golarion, the older one is going away - because it was written under 3.5 rules, as I understand it. In 3.5 the khopesh was a standard weapon in the PHB. And the Osirion Khopesh was in the Osirion chronicles book.
At any rate, the "regular" Khopesh (read as: one-handed) is reprinted in the Adventurer's Armory, I think, but, there's no Osirion Khopesh in the new books. Now, I know that my PFS character's weapon is grandfathered in ... but, I am wondering if I am just missing the weapon in a book I don't have, or if, perhaps, it's coming out in some other book soon?
Let's all indulge ourselves, and little a engage in a fun round of baseless speculation, shall we?! <impish wink>

'Tis an unfortunate course of events, to be certain, that my fellow brothers of Osirion did not avail themselves of this opportunity to bring another honoured family member into the fold. I deeply regret having been away from this congregation the mere span of half a fortnight.
Nevertheless, it is not surprising to see the greedy Qadirans, or the schemeing Chelaxians leap on what they likely percieve as a tasty morsel with which to toy.
Had I been able, I would have told tales of heroism and of long forgotten ancestors from times of greater glory. ... of duty, honour and loyalty. ... of the righteous cause of protecting one's ancestors and family, seeing that all that is theirs is given them, and devoting one's life to ensuring that none may bring harm to those you serve.
'Tis tragedy, I assure you, that you have chosen to consort with devils. You violate the traditions that men hold sacred. I am not talented in the art of prophecy, but, I firmly believe that you shall rue the day you made this choice. Maybe not today, and maybe not tomorrow. But soon, and for the rest of your life ... for you have given your soul to the devils. Not traded it, mind you: given it freely.
[That was kind of fun, actually. Posting "In-character" what Qa'Pelos might have actually thought of it. Thanks for the OP. Good Times.]
San-Chez wrote: I look at it more of a flavor thing being a dwarf. His love of stone surpasses all other passions that he seeks to become living imortal stone

That really kind of makes sense ... I hadnt thought of it in the sense that it's about stone ... Qa'Pelos looks at it from an aspect of protecting and venerating the ancient dead. He's to become an immortal statue standing guard over his ancestors.
But the aspect of stone cannot be ignored. It is undoubtedly likely that - in a world with dwarves - that they would likely be drawn to this class. Obviously, dwarves that are from Osirion are much more likely to follow the PrC.
:) ... in point of fact, the more I think about it, I kind of liek the idea of pseudo-Egyptian dwarves. They would be part of the society from which they hail, so why not have them defend their ancestors the same way an Osiriani human would. :)

Qa'Pelos looks about the square, watching all the people pass with interest, surveying each with a critical eye. Many are the people of this strange city, foreign in every way. His dark Garundi eyes take the measure of each man he sees pass, calculating each by his gait, his demeanor, his stature ... and he looks for the details that he knows only few would recognize. The grey cast that denotes skin that is infused with the power of ancient stone and the far away stare of a man that is able to see the life force of every creature around him. In the distance, he spies the heavy form of a dwarf lumbering through the wet streets, and he sees a glimmer from his brow. "Could it be a diadem he wore?" Qa'Pelos wonders to himself as he tries to catch another glimpse of the stocky man. With a solid resolve, he sets out with determination to find the passing Dwarf.
<beams a big ol' grin>
You know, it's interesting to me that there've been two dwarves mentioned. That never even crossed my mind when I was making Qa'Pelos. A very interesting choice, to be certain. I think that I kind of like it. :) Especially since their Stability bonuses stack between race and PrC. Qa'Pelos is a Combat Manuever junkie, and the idea of a +8 to avoid trips and Bull Rushes is pretty massive.
So ... thus far we have:
Ricky Bobby or Nok'To'Kah
Ruffles - (Elliot Garrou)
Rapa - Dwarf Fighter/Ranger/Living Monolith (James Risner)
Grog Stronghammer - Dwarf Osirion Ftr5/LivMono5 (San-Chez)
Qa'Pelos listens to lore long into the evening as the doughty man steadfastly passes the legends and beliefs of the monoliths along to him. Unwaveringly into the night, as the rain quietly mists in the air, the two of them take a journey by the light of campfire, into the past. Just out of sight, the spirits of their ancestors watched them, and approved.

I'm interested in a little bit of RP information.
There's a lot of Prestige Classes out there, nowadays, and I am curious about ones being played by Osirion players. Specifically, I play a Fighter who is taking levels in the Living Monolith Prestige class. What I am trying to do is fill in some of the history and roleplaying notes that aren't able to be played in the PFS scenarios, because there's not a whole lot of RP that can always be added in organized play.
The Living Monolith has a prerequisite (that is hand-waved in PFS) that requires a ceremony that must be attended by another Living Monolith (or a sphinx). I think that it would be rather cool to find out if there are other Living Monoliths in the PFS, and perhaps be able to add them into the stories that I write for my PC.
So, all of you Osirion faction players sound off! Let's see what the most popular Prestige Classes are for our faction, especially if there's Living Monoliths. Don' be afraid to "snitch" on a fellow player ... if you know someone who's playing a Living Monolith in the PFS, shout it out loud! ... and if you are really pleased with the Prestige class you play, feel free to note that as well!

All I want to know is when I get to meet someone at a table or in a mod that has the language "Sphinx" so that I can use the darned language that I had to have for my prestige class.

It was indeed a marvelous Con ... great fun was had by all. I played every single slot, and was impressed with the dedication of the DMs to make certain that all of the slots were made, even though there was some (normal) confusion. The 4e D&D folks were even helpful with access to a printer so that the final Chronicles could be printed. I thought the autographed books were phenomenal, when my friend Harkelian showed them to me. Like several others, I too, didn't ever make it outside of the gaming room (and spent over 13 hours there on Saturday)!
Thanks to all, and we hope that next year's ComicPalooza will be even greater!
Absolutely ... once your players are used to it, the responsibility lies completely in their hands.
As a veteran player of groups that are fairly consistent, I would also like to point out that sometimes the DM needs a reminder. While we would all like to believe that we have perfect memories, and that our DM always knows what's going on, sometimes they will forget the precise details of five different faction goals, of which there are occasionally two per faction.
So ... sometimes, it's even a good idea for the PCs to give the DM a reminder: "BTW, when [my PC] does [such-and-such], he takes time to do it [in this specific way]." Making a point of the action is usually enough to jog the DM's memory so that he takes note of you completing your faction goals. So it's fair to mention to your players to do that if needed.
On the topic of Faction Missions being thwarted by other players, I would offer this from the Paizo One Page Flyer (downloadable from the paizo site) advertising the PFRPG:

... and what's better than a response from Eric Mona! And Josh Frost has answered three posts for me now on various threads!!
Thank you, one and all, for helping me find the opportunity to do some really wonderful RPing.

While I realize that the above quote does say "a diety", I would also suggest that the reference is to not having a "generic cleric" as is provided for by D&D rules, and it refers to a "abstract" cleric". I don't particularly think that pantheonic worship detracts from the intent of this statement, and that it doesn't detract from the playablility of a cleric that follows a true pantheon of racial dieties, since this statement is clearly aimed at clerics of no diety at all.
The easiest solution to this is to worship the entire pantheon, but to choose a single deity that most closely resembles the main focus of the cleric in question. And insofar as the OP question, I am not aware of anywhere within Pathfinder rules that states or suggests that a player is not allowed to change deities. There might be some Atonement that is required when doing so, and obviously, this kind of change isn't encouraged on a regular basis. But to improve the character I should think that it is more than acceptable to retcon a little bit of the character's story to more closely match the original intent and/or concept of the player.
Just my two coppers worth.
I'm a player, looking for a little help for my GM. I am very fond of Osirion, and am playing an Osirion fighter that I plan on making into a Living Monolith (the prestige class). Two of the prerequisites are RP requirements that are essentially hand-waved for PS play, but I would like to have them in my character's history nonetheless.
What I am looking for is the name of a mod to give to my GM, so that I might meet either a) another Living Monolith, or b) a sphinx, or c) the mod is set in Osirion. Does anyone know of a mod that has one of these in it? (No spoilers here, please.) I would just like to be able to say that my character did things the "old fashioned way" and learned the language of the Sphinx from an "authentic" source.
Thanks for the help in defining my character in the setting. :)
I read earlier in this FAQ thread that the RP requirements for classes such as Living Monolith are just sort of hand-waved. While I do agree with earlier posts that it would be cool to have mod-items on the chronicle to allow access, I also see why that is a near impossibility.
My question is also about the Living Monolith. It lists Speak Language: Sphinx as a prerequisite. I understand that this should now be listed as Linguistics, but I can't find any language list that has Sphinx on it. How does one learn the language? Is it just a mechanical thing that I put it on my character sheet and it happens? Should I have to find "access" to a Sphinx? Are there "requirements" for learning any languages at all? Do I have to get Knowledge: Local first, or have a Mod set in that region?
Maybe, if I had an IRL Comprehend Languages spell, I'd already know! ;-)
I have been a member of CLAG for awhile now, and we are indeed running Pathfinder games lately. In fact, we have one this coming Saturday (Jan 23rd, 2010) at San Jacinto College.
