The Exchange

Yes, that would have been hilarious if she had nat 20ed her stealth check just now. Thanks for understanding...and will miss this wonderful game.

If you need an in game reason for her vanishing, perhaps the Cult of the Snake captured her clandestinely.

The Exchange

Guys terribly sorry but I really need a break from the boards, I'm going to step away for a few months and clear my head.

The Exchange

Looks maybe too bright for stealth, but will if possible. Reminder Nov can do it in only light obscurement with Skulker.

Hide: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

Novyn crept forward along the wall, keeping her eyes peeled for danger.

Also, do we see the mimic corpse?

The Exchange

Thanks, was just using fluffy wording. Only wanted to get out of the crowded area.

The Exchange

The cursed rogue dashed back up the stairs faster than flame.

The Exchange

Ari, I noticed but DM said no one took it so went with that.

DM, I don't want to throw the oil, I want to pour it on the 5 ft square at the bottom of the stairs in an effort to get the thing the fudge out of there. My assumption is that it will not enjoy standing in the middle of a fire and might move. I didn't think I could make it all the way and pour and light in one turn, so I tried to move halfway there during my turn. Can I move the rest of the way and do it now? Maybe you should just tell me how I can accomplish that, or if I can't.

Oil Flask:

Oil usually comes in a clay flask that holds 1 pint. As an action, you can splash the oil in this flask onto a creature within 5 feet of you or throw it up to 20 feet, shattering it on impact. Make a ranged attack against a target creature or object, treating the oil as an improvised weapon. On a hit, the target is covered in oil. If the target takes any fire damage before the oil dries (after 1 minute), the target takes an additional 5 fire damage from the burning oil. You can also pour a flask of oil on the ground to cover a 5-foot-square area, provided that the surface is level. If lit, the oil burns for 2 rounds and deals 5 fire damage to any creature that enters the area or ends its turn in the area. A creature can take this damage only once per turn.

That bolded effect was what I was thinking might help here.
If it doesn't move, she has 4 more flasks and maybe we can just kill it that way.

The Exchange

Novyn works her way closer to the door, grabbing a torch from the wall.

Can only get about half way there I think. Will pour oil and light next round.

The Exchange

"Yeah. I can light my arrows on fire. But at this angle the only thing I can hit is you."

This stairway situation sucks for pretty much all of us, we need to do some battlefield control here, imo. Yeah, one person can stand there and solo melee it. But I was thinking maybe it would move out of its hidey camp spot if we lit the ground on fire beneath it. Or perhaps someone could take the Shove action and push it through into the adjoining chamber.

The Exchange

As Lysander doubted her plan she could only shake her head "If you'd instead like to wrestle its acidic pseudopods be my guest." waiting for some action to be taken in the cramped halls. The angle of the stairs made ranged support impossible.

If the door remained where it was only melee perhaps taking coordinated turns or fire over time would do, in the thief's calculations. So much she mumbled under her breath there at the top of the landing.

Mateo and I could Disengage/Melee attack every round if its too stupid to Ready an attack. But I think its too cramped now, and now also Kaia's stuck. Id still vote trying the fire if she can get out.
It shouldn't burn the solid white marble temple, right? :)

The Exchange

"Animated object? Hmph. Burn it out. Yes, let's see how 'animated' it becomes while writhing in flames!" the rogue suggests, passing up the party conga line a pint of oil to pour on the door.

I nearly had the mental picture right, only detail I missed was the sharp turn to the left of the door at the end of the stairs.

The Exchange

SB wrote:
Also, what is the +14 to damage from?

That's Sharpshooter I bet, -5 to attack roll for +10 damage. Kaia's normal mods would be +8 atk (dex, archery style, prof) with a +4 dmg (dex).

The Exchange

If I can still make it behind everyone, sure I'll Disengage/Dash instead of double Dash.

The Exchange

Novyn ducked suddenly at the door's snapping response and carried the momentum into a tremendous backflip carrying her to safety with a hasty retreat.

Moving all the way back through everyone to the rear with 90 ft of movement if that's enough. Double Dash with Cunning Action. Busting out the gastraphetes as she goes.

The Exchange

Novyn flashes the sign for trap to Mateo and approaches cautiously. She takes out a slender wire from her hair and inserts it around the door jamb probing for hidden triggers...

The cursed thief crept forward, her soft leather sandals making no sound at all as she crossed over the marble of the temple...

The Exchange

After short rest, staying with party.

The Exchange

Thieves' tools: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Thieves' tools, inspiration: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23

Sorry for terse post, got some house projects today...

The Exchange

Novyn had been slowly walking around the battlefield extracting a few lucky quarrels that escaped a splintering end. She was digesting the unfolding plot and felt suckered, narrowing her eyes at Proteus ::That's always their way isn't it...'help us first, nevermind what was agreed'...::

Of course the loveless rogue couldn't openly condone either of them, if the Oracle wasn't here then it couldn't be helped...still, she was beginning to wonder if the party had saved Proteus' life only for the man to send them to their deaths. She started to feel like Proteus owed her, and was sizing up the priest and his acolytes for any valuables on their person to settle the perceived debt...

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

If (and only if) one of them has something worth stealing, she will help that one clear the bodies and wait until her and that one are alone together (perhaps dragging a body outside together). Then will try to palm it.

Sleight: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

The Exchange

Novyn tries to sneak in to get a clear shot on the remaining annoyance (will accept cover if necessary but not risking hitting party this time)...

Xbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Xbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25 If Hide was success and can stealth to shot
Dmg+Snk: 1d8 + 3 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 3 + (3) = 7

The Exchange

1 person marked this as a favorite.

That's fine man, no worries. Was expecting cover bonus to apply. I guess I just meant if you want to have Hitting Cover be a possibility in the future to let me know, which you just did.

Its just awkward for rules to spring up mid-turn for me, but I totally get decisions gotta come on the fly sometimes.

The Exchange

Ah. Well I was unaware of a houserule for hitting intervening objects with ranged attacks. Theres a Hitting Cover optional variant in the DMG but it sounds like you are using something different. Will take the 50/50 chance, no risk no reward after all.

The Exchange

Attack Braeca: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Attack Braeca, adv: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Dmg: 1d8 + 3 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 3 + (3) = 10

Novyn turned the corner and in that split second sighted Braeca down with her gastraphetes...

I hope I am not misunderstanding and that B is badguy XD

...before turning the corner again to reload.

Bonus Hide: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

The Exchange

Is the red K next to me the tied up soldier? If not, and its an active enemy will change my actions to Disengage and bonus hide within the next of columns.

The Exchange

Sorry thought doors were sturdy brass for some reason

Init: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Novyn followed up Kaia's shot without any conscious thought, just pure intinctual reaction...then ducked for cover behind the large stone table setting another quarrel...though she remained mindful about further threats from outside, she hoped Mateo and not another spearman would be the next through the door as she struggled with the awkward gastraphetes on the floor.

Xbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Dmg: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Bonus Hide: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23

The Exchange

List has ever only worked a few years ago for me.

I'm ok using the Zone rules.

The Exchange

Stepping out of the mists, Novyn quickly darted to behind the cover of the columns. She nodded at Aristeides and produced a thin brass rectangle of metal from her hair, and a thick but flexible copper wire from under a cloth wristlet. If there was a way she could get this door open from the outside, she would find it...

dex Thieves' Tools: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

...so she told herself.

The Exchange

Quote:
having the ability... every round to get 80' of movement, and an attack seems overpowered to me... You can move a heavily armored creature 40' instead of their normal 20 or 25. You can move a normally immobile creature. You can move a creature with lower movement speed.

Yet those are all things a normal horse can do!

And the normal horses have 60 ft speed, for 120 ft a round with the rider attacking. Centaur only has 40.

What limits Mountable's power I think is that the rider isn't considered mounted and therefore cant benefit from the Mounted Combatant feat or any other normal/typical mount tactics stuff.

But yeah, the 3pp ability might need some tinkering. Just beware of unintentionally modifying everyday action economy I guess was what I was trying to argue...5e is pretty solid in that regard, imho.

The Exchange

Not trying to pester, but also consider...what if Coro was just a normal mount with 40 spd? Lysander could've mounted with half his movement, then the mount would Dash and move 80 ft worth of speed, then Lysander could dismount for the other half of his movement and still have an Action. (I mean Mountable really just gets rid of the mount/dismount requirement)

With your ruling in mind, you are saying a rider would be required to take his Action during the ride. Just want to clarify, since that isn't a 3rd party thing...that's just a normal mount thing that could happen in any 5e game and could come up again (and I hate rules surprises).

I'll stfu now, sorry.

The Exchange

If you are going that route...I mean, even the humble Shove ability available to all characters from core can force 5 ft. So since it 'took time' to get pushed that 5 ft the shoved person would lose that 5 ft from its movement speed? Since you can't suspend time and get that back, right? You moved 5 ft, therefore consuming the time resource. Is that what you mean? (edit: even though it shoved you closer to your 'meeting' you still lost movement?)

There are a ton of things that change/grant movement above the usual, some pretty similar to Mountable that work on friendly even. Check out glamour bard's mantle of inspiration, battlemaster's maneuvering attack...for them the 'extra time' comes from the reaction all characters get as part of a round.

The Exchange

And come to think of it, we didn't even roll initiative so whos to say if Ly or Coro acted first? XD

The Exchange

Honestly that's confusing to me for a number of reasons. First, there's no such thing as 'full-round actions', this is 5e not 3.5/PF. ;P

Second, everybody acts on their own initiative always. Even the Delay action doesn't work like 3.5/PF where you could change your initiative count. In 5e you simply prepare a single reaction to use on a different count but your init stays the same.

You are of course free to alter anything however you wish, but I think if you are going that route and saying Lysander is acting on Coro's turn you should at least allow a Reaction worth of activity from Lysander.

Third, my interpretation of the Centaur ability is that it is Forced Movement. This is from the fact that it does not provoke OA, like any Forced Movement. Therefore it doesn't use Lysander's speed at all. So he should have his move speed. Mountable Centaur ability specifically says he isn't considered mounted, meaning he doesn't need to spend movement dismounting.

Also, Coro moved 80 ft of speed in 6 seconds. I don't understand how if he moved 40 ft of speed in the same time (slower), that would afford Lysander more actions in front of the temple.

Anyways, just my thoughts, not a big deal and DM is always right. These 3rd party rules are probably better nailed down sooner than later.

The Exchange

Oh my gosh, Ari!

The Exchange

Novyn took her cue from Mateo, following up on his target with a quarrel of her own...

Xbow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 One roll, assuming previous hide success.
Dmg: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

...then faded back into the mists as she set another bolt quickly.

Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

The Exchange

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

The cursed thief tried to focus in on the figures but the sulfurous gas stung her eyes. Novyn had trained herself to be hyper sensitive to her surroundings -- a necessity within proximity of the Cult of the Snake. But this foreign atmosphere was defeating her training. Not to mention the damn centaur wouldnt put his tail down...a further distraction.

Dex Save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Dex Save, advantage: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

Assuming you meant Save instead of Check, like last time. If not, -2 to both rolls.

::Too close...:: she chastised herself, getting more and more irritated. Deciding it was time to prepare for the encounter she drewing her black oiled gastraphetes. Motioning the party ahead one last time towards Mateo's rendevous the rogue disappeared into the mists...

Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

The Exchange

"I told you. The mists concealed the figures but they are there...we don't know friend or foe...gods obviously we did not engage --- that is the point of this ambush: to be ready in case it is the latter. The bare, apparent threat is as I said the volcanic tubes lying underfoot...there is no pattern to their blasting retort! Don't try and get cute! You have to be ready at any moment..."

Taking the Dodge action as you walk could help since it gives advantage on Dex saves.

The Exchange

Ah, right. Its for teammates! Super cool. All you have to do is bonus Hide and enemies cant get any OA on anyone.

The Exchange

I'm a huge sucker for the thief subclass...play it a lot. Not optimal in any way shape or form, but it ticks the boxes I need to be happy.

I've actually had a 2nd rogue in the party before on these message boards, which is what made me think of it. We only used it once together for the short game it was...but hope to get some mileage out of it here, I've always thought it was pretty rad and like reading about its real world analogues.

And the Odyssean package is way cool, the only thing I don't understand is the Notorious Trickster ability. The part that says "Creatures who are aware of your presence but cannot see you become too distracted to perform OA until they can see you again."

...

You can't make OA on something you can't see anyways. I don't get it. The later part is totally awesome with the disadvantage to concentration checks...but that bit about OA makes no sense to me. Then again Im a moron so probably missing something.

The Exchange

Novyn slinked back to the party, informing them of the tactical situation. "...and vents of hot steam from the earth, like boiling cauldrons ready tip their lids any moment. Mateo awaits in ambush for our return, we draw them out then pincer them..." she sketches the basic layout of the temple in the sand "...here."

The Exchange

Novyn used the hand gestures and signs of the older street brotherhoods, some of which had been adopted by more modern military scouts...her hands flickered:

Thieves' Cant:
::Wait concealed by the south columns. Lead party here?:: indicating a more open position. If the group of unknowns would attack the larger group there, the two hidden rogues would have an advantageous position to strike from.

The Exchange

If the mist is even lightly obscuring, I can attempt stealth with the Skulker feat. So she might be able to stealth some places Mateo can't.

Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Stealth, Inspiration: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

Dex save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

Novyn became the crawling, insidious disease she carried...sloughing down the ravine like the alkaline waters belched forth from the Underworld.

The Exchange

Its actually pretty common to have resistances depending on it. I would say keep it if you were using spear already, will likely be a long time until we have magic weapons. Half damage without it kind of stinks. On the other hand its probably not that big of deal...with the armor upgrade to studded for me I really dont have much need for coin for a while personally.

The Exchange

Did someone claim the silver spear? That would add 100 gp to its base cost. Don't care if someone keeps it at all, just saying.

The Exchange

Awesome thanks.

Alright, so 40.5 base cost. Arrow knocks it down to 15.5. Can trade in current Leather armor for half base price I assume to lower to 10.5...which I can pay with leftover coin from character creation.

Will update on profile and note on sheet.

edit: also we had 24.7 gp and if splitting even its 4.12 gp each. Did all items get claimed? We could sell whatever wasn't for coin.

The Exchange

Novyn hated clutter. As much as she loved wealth, she wasn't a hoarder.
She had developed a habit of minimalism when traveling during her exile, or at least thought there was value in the appearance of so. She hid most of her wealth inside a fired clay cup that appeared worthless. The golden arrow struck at her sensibilities...it burned a hole in her pocket screaming to exchanged for more practical goods before it was stolen. Gods forbid any Cult of the Snake would learn she possessed such a thing.

Quote:
Any special preparations before approaching the temple?

Was wondering about studded leather being available for purchase.

She nodded at Mateo's suggestion, adding "I don't like surprises...unless I'm on the knowing side."

The Exchange

Is studded leather armor available as part of the basic supplies? I could use the arrow and my share of the coin to afford it.

Aristeides wrote:
Now the dreaded time: choosing which philosophy school to follow...

Hey man, you didn't ask so feel free to ignore, but I play wizards quite a bit (really the only other class I can stand besides rogue...I'm lame like that). I would personally go Cynicism without hesitation...nothing matters like quantity of spells in spellbook, and getting the school discount universally is awesome. The little forage bonus at the end is a f++&ing sweet cherry on top.

Now for pure RP there might be some more interesting options, but just saying that's easily the most attractive from a crunch standpoint, imo. A wizard without spells in their spellbook (above the level granted ones) is just a sorcerer without any cool abilities.

2 hp: 2d8 ⇒ (8, 6) = 14 (8)

3. Sorry, if I havent been guilty of this yet surely I will be moving forward.

4. No complaints here, very fun game.

The Exchange

On the way back, Novyn spent a great deal of time silently flipping the gold arrow around in her nimble fingers, inspecting its quality more closely...

Int Investigation: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

Want to try and appraise its value.

The Exchange

Sacrifice:
Coronus: Chiron
Novyn: Chiron Kyrah
Kaia: no vote
Mateo: Kyrah
Lysander: Kyrah
Aristeides: Vallus

As the wood begins to be stacked, and the tension over which god to choose rises, Novyn catches a glance from Kyrah and something inside her tickles making her say "I change my vote to Kyrah." thinking ::Maybe she'll give me another of those golden arrows...::

Besides, something about the way the centaur's private bits were left openly flopping about unsettled her.

The Exchange

Friendship had never meant anything to the Estorian thief. But with friends like the Cult of the Snake, and a titan's curse to be often betrayed and never know love...who could blame her? After all what sour shell was friendship left with in the absence of love? Something transactional surely -- a repeat customer of mutual benefit.

And Novyn saw value in these customers:

Kyrah, with a song that whispered promises from the Oracle. One who carried about golden arrows as if they were foxtails casually plucked from the river side.

Coronus, who wielded a power that seemed to defy the titans and known gods alike. A power she could use by simple association.

Lysander and Mateo, planet and moon forever revolving in the orbits of war. Their eternal dance a distraction that might serve well her shadow arts.

Kaia, who arced the τόξον's sting against the beast, but held another always in reserve for a special foe. Novyn's street tactics could grow even more exploitative by careful study of this weapon master.

Aristeides, binder of lost powers. Whose education spoke of boundless wealth in his family...wealth a friend might siphon.

Yes, never love, but she would take from each of them just as a friend would. The kind of friend she knew. The only kind of friend the titans would allow her to ever know.

"I will sign." she was almost surprised to hear herself say. "Give me that quill..." she held the cut tip close to her eye to see the golden flakes flicker in the light. With a smirk, she scribed out her name.
