Liberty's Edge

A bit of an odd question, but I'm curious as to whom the major employees of the company are (in part to find their work elsewhere, particularly among the creatives). Where would I find that info?

Liberty's Edge

Fundamental facets of history are in fact false. Major villains in various global events were framed, in other cases certain events were covered up, others still fabricated out of whole cloth.

I have ideas on how to uncover these truths. Original documents, 'impossible' relics, testimony from preserved figures, etc...

However, I'm pretty stumped on how this might work mechanically. As I see it the History skill would only provide 'facts' related to history as written, not history as happened.

Liberty's Edge

Having an odd idea for a theme involving Doppelgangers with a slight twist to their normal MO based on this meme.

Libertarian plot

So while yes they're looking for power and wealth it's as a means to the end of more overall freedom (and the acceptance of them as a race).

Liberty's Edge

That's the main question, but, it brings with it a host of other questions.

If Doppelgangers have naughty bits are they fixed, or mutable as the rest of their forms are?

Do they spawn with each other, by themselves, need a partner of another race?

Gestation times? Odds of multiple births?

Many questions, and the Bestiary only gives that they do have young, but, neglects to point out the means.

Liberty's Edge

This is a first draft of what I hope to be a good campaign seed. Comments and criticisms are welcome. Good alternate names strongly requested! I suck at naming.

Thurston Howell (late middle aged human male) is a noble (no higher than duke or baron) charting a ship to meet an unknown aggressive force encroaching on his waters on an unclaimed island near his holdings. He hopes to make peace and increase his influence at court by handling the matter peaceably and without aid.

Lovey (early middle aged human female, though appears younger) is Howell's wife, and heiress to a trading company of major influence in the area. Though the foreign aggressors are little known she surmises that they would have goods worthy of trade, and

Skipper (adult dwarf male) and Gilligan (adult orc male) are trusted seamen in Howell's employ.
Skipper being the old salt of the two mans the helm, a life he's grown accustomed to since his clan was driven to the sea by giants that claimed his ancestral home. Becomes terribly irritable if deprived of grog for long.
Gilligan was adopted by the Skipper at a young age after being found among the debris of a wrecked ship. Despite unwavering loyalty to the Skipper Gilligan's usefulness suffers when required to do most physical tasks (has haunted curse, without any obvious benefits that oracles would have).

Mary-Anne (adult halfling female) is an indentured servant, but, happily going about her business, saving up to someday buy out her contract and obtain a small plot of land to farm and bring the rest of her family to the mainland.

Ginger (adult sorcerer, likely female) is a dancer of the exotic sort, always shrouded in some form of illusion. A low level magic user she beguiles men as she sways her hips. Howell plans to use this to catch the enemy forces unawares should he be fortunate enough to enter negotiations with one of their leaders face to face.

Naturally there's going to be a storm and the Minnow will be lost...
Unlike the TV show I plan for them to escape at some point (not by capping gilligan) and returning to see what mayhem ensued during their absence.

Liberty's Edge

I should not be in charge of naming anything.

That being said I've been thinking about the phrase 'poor craftsmen blame their tools'. The idea is mainly to allow characters to receive items of great power early on without becoming becoming ridiculously powerful. To that end I've come up with an idea that I believe works out nicely allowing someone to accept a powerful item (a named weapon for example) without being defined by it, or overpowering the opposition.

For weapons and armor this would be a simple numeric progression I forget the name of, but can be seen in a pool rack. Best to show it with a simple table.

Lv Bonus
1 +1/-
3 +2/+1
6 +3/+2
10 +4/+3
15 +5/+4
21 +6/+5

So assuming a young adventurer were to be given a fantastic weapon (for sake of argument call it a +5 flaming burst corrosive burst greatsword (the Dragon's Two Burns). At first level David the not yet mighty is handed the Dragon's Twin Burns from his grandfather King James, at this point he can unlock only the basic enchantment of +1. A few years later as David's sent to speak with Saul about not being a prick he gains his third level mastering more of the Dragon's Twin Burns power using it as a +1 Flaming Burst greatsword.

What do you guys think?

Merciful as many of you know converts normal damage to non-lethal damage, adding a d6 in the process.

As some of you may also know when you drop a character with non-lethal the remaining damage is converted to lethal damage.

So my question is: Could my boomer (min 30 damage on a hit) accidentally kill someone while Merciful is active?

Liberty's Edge

I mean really... Lens of Detection just went to the eyes slot, which makes it the *only* item in the game that both takes up a slot and requires a free hand to use.

Even in the description it's a 6 inch lens in a handled loop, obviously you're not wearing this on your face all day! Unless I plan to look super stupid at PFS next week...

Liberty's Edge

I'm a fan of ye olde school kobolds with the waggily tails, and (as a Suikoden fan) their having different 'breeds' of kobold similar to human ethnic divides.

Is there anything in the AP that will make this difficult or impossible without say more than an hour's work rewriting box text and such?

Liberty's Edge

I'm looking to build the fastest character possible in Pathfinder (possibly for use in PFS).

The obvious route is Monk with Fleet taken at each feat, and perhaps spending ki to boost that on an as needed basis, but that's kinda boring.

As the title of the post indicates I'm looking for a speed of no less than 88mph, or (roughly, forgot the exact speed needed for 88mph) 90' base speed.

If you can make it within PFS specs that'd be great, but I'm curious to see how fast a character can be under a normal pre epic game with base races, and also what can be done with all Paizo material included.

Actually, I'd like to extend this challenge to all forms of movement (aside from teleport), swim, burrow, climb (and easiest of them all) fly speeds included!

Once some data is in I might be interested in seeing how a Golarian world race might be held, through some of the more iconic locations and environments of the world.

Liberty's Edge

Is anyone actually working on this thing, or has it been left to rot on the vine?

Better yet, is there a (free) character generator for Pathfinder that isn't java (a language I have nothing good to say about) based?

Failing either, is anyone else trying to write LST files for PCGen? I'm considering it as more products come out, but would be happy if some others joined in with me.

Liberty's Edge

Planning a Halfling built around being *very* Halfling (taking a few of the racial feats) and based around the Childlike feat.

Must haves are Childlike, and Lucky Halfling. Everything else is up for grabs, though at the moment I'm thinking some flavor of Sorcerer might be a good idea.

So, forum, help me kick this concept up a notch, all the way up to one and a Halfling!

Liberty's Edge

It seems so to me at any rate.

With a minimum DC of 20, not able to take 10 (and taking 20 is a no go when activating as well) in addition to the potential for needing multiple checks.

For instance, if you were to attempt to use a magic item that was restricted to say LG Dwarf Paladins and you were a CN Gnome Bard you'd need to make 4 UMD checks of which if any one were to be below 20 you'd have to start all over again.

Even a 10th level Rogue that took skill mastery and had a UMD of 15 (full ranks plus good Cha) would not be able to reliably cast from 4th level scrolls, or any spell with a casting stat higher than he possessed.

Liberty's Edge

I'm designing a monk character and wanted to know if Ryu was still a valid character concept in pathfinder as it was at the end of 3.5.

Preferably I'd want to use only material that was PFS legal, but that's not a hard stop. Any of the core races (and most of the bestiary races) are fine, but I have a preferance for humans.

For anyone not familiar with the character I'm referring to this is a sample of his special abilities.

Liberty's Edge

I'd seen someone with a build for this, but after skimming the cleric entry didn't see anything that allowed for this. Did I miss something?

Liberty's Edge

I could've sworn I saw a 'Goblins of Golarion' announced somewhere but I can't find any mention of it on the site.

Also, while I'm bothering someone, I heard someone on the boards talk about Paizo's DRM on PDF products. Is this true? The free products I've downloaded had a simple watermark without the hassles of cumbersome DRM. Needless to say watermark is my preference by far.

Liberty's Edge

Looked at the Duelist weapon enhancement and noticed it provides a +4 enhancement bonus to init.

Naturally with a +11 (trying for 18+) Init. I thought this would be a prime get, but then remembered my belt of Dex +2 adds an enhancement bonus to me Dex, which in turn adds to my init.

So, does the enhancement bonus to dex translate into an enhancement bonus to init. as well?

Liberty's Edge

According to the description this item allows a person to active it's immobility by stepping on it, and it's immobility ends whenever it's no longer being touched by at least one foot.

Which leads me to the conclusion that a character could simply 'jump' through the air, much like a person on a pogo stick only the 'ground' effectively follows them.

So, what creative uses do you have for this unique item?

Liberty's Edge 2/5

Why are the mounts available for society play so severely limited?

As a side note, why isn't the Bonus Beastiary allowed? I'm so frustrated I can't play a Halfling Cav riding an Axebeak everywhere!

Liberty's Edge

Now, I'm just thinking out loud, but, since Int items come with their skills predetermined, couldn't someone stock up on ioun stones with all the skills a person might need? Assuming a limit of one floating stone, then additional wayfinders could house the stones, and the headband for additional skills (and potentially higher Int bonus).

Oh sure you don't get more than a +2 to Int, but imagine, any skill only 8k away?

Am I on to something here, or just nuts?

Liberty's Edge

Currently playing a Rogue that keeps getting shoved into the front lines, and unsurprisingly I'm getting beaten like Whitney Houston.

Given that odds are I'm going to remain on the front lines, what should I be doing to bump up my defensive abilities?

I *was* a delving Rogue (perception and DD way up), so any sacrifice of offensive abilities would be acceptable.

Liberty's Edge

Or I will, if someone can't poke holes in my idea.

I've got a, currently, empty haversack, and it can hold 80lbs of gnomish (or halfling) might without my taking any penalties. Now this is a very silly idea, but I can't help thinking it would be *very* effective if I happened to have a midget battery/bazooka in my backpack.

If I happen to find myself the tallest in the room, I'll keep 2 potions of reduce person and become a mobile weapon's platform.

For example, say I'm bored and decide to haul several allies, giving them each a potion of reduce person to allow them to fit into my pockets (2 small become tiny and fit my side pockets, and a medium could be made small to fit the main pocket) allowing for example any combination of healing, mundane shooting, and magic blasting. I'd still be at a light load, and depending on build moving between 40-50' a round.

So fire away, why doesn't this work?

Liberty's Edge 2/5

What happened with the new OrgPlay guide?!

The orc book isn't in there anywhere! What gives? I wanted to be the Orc 'zerker giving rage to all my friends.

Liberty's Edge

I've been out of the loop for awhile, so I still don't know...

What (if any) book were the additional effects of ioun stones placed into wayfinders listed?

Liberty's Edge

Man, seriously?!

Color me impressed, this guy had some serious material hunting *and* crafting to do on this piece. All this work done in what, a month's notice maybe?

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

Given the astounding success of my last question I fully understand people not wanting to join this thread. But this question is made in sincerity, so if you believe you know the answer and are uncomfortable stating it in thread please message me directly.

In combat who controls...
1) an animal companion
2) a familiar
3) a cohort
4) a slave
5) a hireling
6) a prisoner

Out of combat who controls...
1) an animal companion
2) a familiar
3) a cohort
4) a slave
5) a hireling
6) a prisoner

Assuming all of these were obtained as per RAW, or barring a RAW means of acquisition within the letter of the local/national laws.

3 people marked this as FAQ candidate. Staff response: no reply required.

This came up when I didn't have my book with me, and when I went to borrow one was told this came up in the forums... So here I am.

In a trap laden place (which my character was specifically *told* there would be traps), I stated I wanted to start taking 20 on perception checks to find traps. I was told that I couldn't, because failure carried negative effects.

The logic seems to be that I can't take 220 because it assumes you 'roll' a 1, 2, 3... and so on till you get to 20, presumably failing several times along the way. In the case of looking for traps failure equates to concluding that there are *no* traps and the character continues on, thereby triggering the trap.

This sounds like horseapples to me, and a cursory search in this forum didn't support this logic, so what say you? Is there RAW or RAI support for this argument?

BTW I'll have similar questions for a couple other things soon.

Liberty's Edge

Aside from the alpha excel tool I can't find any pathfinder tools for chargen. Is there actually a desert of tools here? Any suggestions would greatly help.

Thanks in advance!

Liberty's Edge 2/5

Hey I've got group of PFS players for at least 100 miles, how do I go about organizing a PFS con?

Liberty's Edge 2/5

I haven't seen any threads for the new mods. What's going on here?

Bah if I have to I'll post one or two I've run with spoilery goodness!

Liberty's Edge

I'm thinking about starting a new Pathfinder game with a small group of friends. I don't have the time to fully flesh out the area, so I'm looking for a product (preferably Paizo) with which to give me details of the area.

I've got an idea for a campaign during war time, in a metropolitan city with a school (college level) of some sort. Players will be given down time, and able to take and/or teach classes.

So what setting book has someplace similar to this?

Liberty's Edge 2/5

At my gameday more than once a player has said "X needs to be fired from PFS" and there's an almost universal hatred of my favorite Grandbastard Torch. In fact at the start of one mod (#12 Stay) the only explanation I've had that made any sense was "He was fired, from a ballista... into the city wall."

As the title says, who needs to be fired? Who needs their firing from a ballista? Does their firing deserve to be into the city wall?

Liberty's Edge 2/5

I've had a couple Chelaxian players ask this to me, and I'm curious now too.

Are the Chelaxians really evil? After looking at three faction missions you've got freeing slaves, blowing up a building, and killing someone (and making it hurt), of those the Chelaxian mission is freeing slaves... What?!?!

Does it get any better for those wanting to play the bad guy?

Liberty's Edge 2/5

Currently I'm running a gameday at a local game store.

In about 45 days there is a con making it's first run (replacing long running one that died last year), and I'd like to make sure PFS has a strong presence there.

Naturally I'm looking to drop as many mods that weekend as possible, shying from murderous ones (#3, #10 looking at you), and finding the creative spark within the rest.

I'm also looking to pull some homestyle Pathfinder into the mix, or possibly an adventure path (a short one considering timeframe) to give another perspective to the whole system.

Right now I'm specifically looking to for level 1 pregens (I'm culling the statblocks of the iconics from my material), possibly other level pregens (for adventure paths), and any support I can get from Paizo and the community.

Everyone, help me evangelize the faith and put more materials in our arsenals!

Liberty's Edge 2/5

It appears that there are two events for A Gathering Of Players (the Gameday I run in AZ). The second event listed is completely blank and I don't see a way to remove it.

The event is located here: http://paizo.com/pathfinderSociety/events/v5748mkg09u51

Mr. Frost if you would be so kind as to remove it, or tell me how to get it removed I would be pleased as punch.

Liberty's Edge 2/5

A few of the 'rulings' I've found on the MB so far, hopefully you've found some as well and can add to this list.

Season 0 FAQ

  • Lesser Restoration costs 60 gp.
  • Battle animals are limited to 1, this includes animal companions and paladin special mounts.
  • No purchasing slaves for anything other than freedom.
  • 3.5 errata is official if referencing core rules.
  • Train animals per PHB, list training under items bought, have GM initial.
  • Hirelings from DMG pg 105 are available for hire.
  • Table contains a minimum of 4 players, and a maximum 6 players.

Liberty's Edge 2/5

Something just hit me yesterday while prepping for the game that shall not be named.

While I dislike the system, the mods are quite a bit easier on the printer since they're extremely clean with few illustrations to process, all at the end with the handouts.

Don't get me wrong, I love the layouts (minus the handout issue), but it does add to the time needed to print these mods out. Which means less time (and INK!) to put towards print and prep of other mods.

I'd happily export it to open office or the like and reprint, but the formatting takes a dump which means editing it to pieces in order to print it cleanly.

I would be greatly pleased if you would offer these mods in a printer friendly version as well, as a new option for the convenience of your fans.

Liberty's Edge 2/5

A few things I've heard requests for purchase and didn't have answers for.

So how much is:

  • A slave (for a Chelaxian, naturally)
  • A familiar
  • A diseased rat (I hope this is a joke)
  • A skilled professional (scholars, artisans, and entertainers mostly)
  • A singing messenger (for the barbarians' faction missions)
  • A cohort (this has come up more than once in 4 man tables).

Liberty's Edge 2/5

I may've asked this before, but don't recall an answer.

The mods I've run so far (1-3) have quite a bit more gold than the cap with perhaps 1 exception. What, if anything, can be done with this gold?

For instance, could the PCs purchase additional supplies (or replace expended supplies, pay bribes, etc...) for the purpose of the scenario with this additional gold?
