Why are the mounts available for society play so severely limited?

As a side note, why isn't the Bonus Beastiary allowed? I'm so frustrated I can't play a Halfling Cav riding an Axebeak everywhere!

It's the nature of organized play and something organizers need to make clear when someone is playing a mount class.

1) mounts dont go into buildings. If a mod is in a building (and that building is not a livery or stable) then your mount will not be there.

2) mounts do not go in caves. While certain exceptions could be made, there is little room to manuever or 'use' the mount as anything other than a pack animal IF you could get it in at all.

In a wilderness mod, a mount could be extremely useful, but basically this just comes down to common sense. Most of your stereotypical Adventurer things are not conducive to mounts. *shrug*

Hold the phone. Cavalier mounts are "as Druid animal companions". The mount could enter any building or cave it can fit into (using Handle Animal). Granted riding it inside the could be difficult or restricted or impossible, but it could be directed to travel or fight as needed. That being said, I do think mounts are often restricted in their usefulness. Even in my home campaign, mounts rarely get used to maximum potential.

This is why small sized Cavaliers will be the norm in PFS, just due to size limitations.

Agreed, just using some generalities. The same can be said for mods where you head off on a boat. A mount won't be the most useful there. While some people may bring them on the quick hopover to other nations, mods that take place entirely on boats (I've seen a few, tho not in PFS yet) will make a mount nearly useless as well.... unless you trick the baddies to coming down to the cargo space where your mount is most likely kept.

"Wait, before we draw weapons and cross blades, I would really like to show you something in the cargo hold..."

I strongly discourage anyone from playing a cavalier or other mounted character in PFS, although I admit that small sized characters on medium sized mounts have less trouble.

The default PFS scenario is "go into this place and get this thing." What follows is a mini-dungeon crawl for the next 3.5 hours (although the "dungeon" might be a manor house, or a ship, or a marketplace, or even a pair of smaller locations). These mini-dungeons often involve stairs or ladders to access, as they are intentionally remote and exotic, rather than ADA compliant. In short, they are not designed for any users other than humanoid-shaped ones, so many of these adventures involve leaving one of your class features--and several of your more powerful feats--at home.

I recommend you just avoid cavaliers in PFS play. The fact that the mounts you can choose are very limited is just another reason to further avoid this class in PFS play.
