Alright, aside from spending a lot of gold and a sizable number of questions, Loreli is largely completed (Aside from 5th level feat and maybe a trait) On the Character of Loreli I've been doing some reading through the thread and character backstories, and Loreli is looking like something of a mirror of Ilysaria. Noble born, society rejected them, both decided to take a life of an adventurer rather than the life they were destined for. But in terms of hopes, they seem quite opposite: Loreli loved the idea of living the society life, while Lys hated it. Might be an interesting dynamic. While I feel like I have enough background to provide insight into her as a character, I always find characters find themselves in other characters. Continuing to mechanics, she is probably the most vulnerable member of the party, at the moment. With relatively low saves across the board (+7 and +6) and some pretty poor AC (16 vs the 19 and 20 of my peers), I feel like she is best kept away from the frontlines. With Spell DCs of 20, however, she can provide effective debuffs against multiple enemies effectively, and with her Infusions, can serve as a competent buffer. Continuing to the more mechanics minded questions: While certainly neither RAW or RAI, would having the Merchant Family trait allow an extra <1050 gp to spend on fluff-related items (A wagon house, a manservant, and outfits) be acceptable? Nothing magical, and nothing that could be readily abused (A bedroom, a Chamber Pot, and an office). I presume the statement of no pre-game crafting applies to Alchemical items in addition to magical items, or would such a permission be allowed, especially for an Alchemist. I presume that you cannot use False Focus to emulate Alchemical Regents? I see way, way earlier into the thread you allowed Spheres of Might. Under martial traditions, a player can trade away their starting proficiencies for a martial tradition. I expect this is largely for more martial characters than an Investigator, and expects them to swap their proficiencies too. However, Investigator's proficiency with the Hand Crossbow qualifies them for this trade. This would mean (Presuming I take the Daring Scholar tradition) that I gain limited access to the Sphere system (About 3 talents). This would mean I would gain access to some limited at-will abilities in my case, plus some minor utility. Would that be acceptable? It'll greatly increase her in-combat utility if she runs out of spells, which may or may not be to her liking. A discovery of Loreli's character DM Ragnarok wrote:
Surprisingly enough for me, the backstory ended up giving her a melee weapon. It's not something I planned for her to get (She was supposed to be a spellcaster in full, and view bloodshed as a terrifying prospect), but it happened. Her spells and alchemical equipment were supposed to be her arms, but it appears she might get some use out of it after all. Speaking of which, I presume the Studied Combat's bonus damage only applies to Melee attacks, despite not explicitly stating so?
DM Ragnarok wrote:
I presume there is nothing I can do to persuade you? After all, Loreli is not a fighter, she's a talker- Studied Strike does not fit with her as a character, while everything else in the Investigator class does. If there was an option to swap it out for something without swapping Poison Lore, I would take it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, it does not exist. I'm only looking at the changes to studied Combat, as otherwise, it would be a wasted class feature- Her family didn't train her to fight, and she has largely sworn off striking blows to further sidestep the stereotypes of her race. While that would be OK, it would not be ideal.Also, dice rolls: 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 1, 6) + 6 = 18 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 5, 3) + 6 = 16 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 5, 4) + 6 = 18 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 4, 3) + 6 = 17 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 2, 4) + 6 = 14 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 5, 5) + 6 = 18 Results in an array of 17, 14, 15, 14, 12, and 16
Whelp, I already have a character nearly completely done, minus a feat, some recalculations, and running some things past you- This is Loreli 'Lo Munte bastard daughter of a noblewoman. Mechanically, she's a Wizard//Investigator, not focused on entering into the frontlines, but on supporting her party and buffing from the backlines. I might give her some tanglefoot bags or similar alchemical equipment, so that she is not solely limited by her magic, but she is largely a spellcaster. Her spells are largely buffs, but I'll add some debuffing spells to her spell list, and bolster her list's BFC. A question for the DM: The Cryptic Scholar and Empiricist archetype do not stack, but I do not like Studied Combat for this character. May I drop Intuitive Monster Lore from the Cryptid Scholar Archetype?

Did a lot of number-crunching, and yeah, I got my skills in order after fixing the +14/+15 issue. As for levels, I know that it's right, because I did everything at level 4 before I mislabeled the level as 5. Level 5's just the more common level for a Wizard. Also, just realized that I have a +2 bonus on Disable Device checks from Trapfinding, which I removed the points from to put to Intimidate and Disguise (Which kinda makes more sense for a lady who knows makeup). I suppose the +2+1d6 to perception will be helpful to setting up Grial as the one to kill the traps, as the alternatives aren't great. Fluff-wise, it just makes more sense than having her have all the ranks in Disable Device, when chances are she was never particularly mechanics minded. She had spent the last two days in this place, and she had purchased some fashionable accessories from the area, some Draconic Perfume, and some Crystal Sweet Concoctions. I'm working under the assumption while I prepare my alchemical equipment.

Well fortune be with me! Loreli will actually see the light of the caravan! I look forward to seeing how we can improve each other by cooperating. Build Info:
While fluff-wise, I'm flavoring it as her purchasing a prefab spellbook for really high cost, but in reality I'll mostly just be using the Arcane Magical Writing rules (1.5 * Spell Level ^ 2).
In terms of build, 'Lo is somewhere between a Bard and a Cleric, with something resembling a Bardic Performance that grants a +1 bonus on AC and saving throws vs 1 type of creature's attacks, along with an Alchemist's infusions, to allow my companions to use any character-specific buffs.
Currently, I plan on adding Full Pouch to help make Alchemical Weapons and such a viable option for *At least* the next few levels. As such, this is probably the most alterable area in terms of build. Her skills are Diplomacy, Bluff, and Sense Motive for social situations (She has Intimidate, but she lacks the Charisma to use it. Honestly should lower it), Linguistics, Spellcraft, and UMD. While she is trained in every knowledge skill, it's no more than 1 points in most non-background skills. Still means a +9+1d6 bonus, but it's not as great as it could be, I suppose. Some minor issue is that she uses her +2 Cha mod instead of her +5 on non-specified diplomacy checks (AKA, wagonwork) and any non-lying. What that means depends on how you read the trait, but I think it means that it excludes Gather Information and Feign, but applies to pretty much everything else. Some other issues is that she cannot fight for s~+$, with defensive scores that are behind the curve. TL;DR- She's a Wizard//Alchemist that dresses like a bard. Anyone want any specific buffs but Enlarge Person, and who can make sure that 'Lo won't be thrown into a pit of lava?
I'm going to be in a car for the next 18 hours, so I won't be able to post, but this is 'Lo's page. Bastard daughter of a noblewoman, adopted into the family. Her adopted father has died, so her mother has to re-marry. Realizing having a bastard half-orc daughter would make it not viable, they both decided to send her off on a grand adventure, as she had been trained in Wizardry and alchemy, and had already garnered something of a name for herself among Magnimars' noble elite for sussing out mysteries. I'll add more to her page, and finish up purchases once I'm somewhere not driving, but as the deadline's tomorrow, I figure having the crunch out in the open is probably a good idea.

Gah, background isn't done to the ammount I'd like, but the outline stuff is done at least. Background:
Imagine, if you will- A kingdom in a distant land, mountains of ice and stones drilled into by isolated dwarves, who embraced darkness wholey. From that darkness, you hear an echo from below, and a Dwarf enters out into the day.
That Dwarf made a kingdom, large and spanning, a kingdom made not of steel, but gold and trade. Gaining materials from the southern regions, with the best ship making across the globe, capable of traveling the rough journey with the highest degrees of success. He birthed a daughter, about forty years ago, concieved on his lovers forge- And so, he birthed his daughter. She was raised like many dwarves in the kingdom- A hint of martial training, some combat, but though she was stout of frame, she wasn’t particuarly strong, but her love seemed to be on the forge, where she spent her days hammering out tools and magic, sowing together outfits- Her love for creation seemed boundless. Her father set something up, between her and the princess of a not to distant kingdom he’d recently been eying to establish trade relations with- So he, and his daughter, began to write. Now, the daughter wasn’t the wisest dwarf, and was relatively foolish, but fell deeply in love with the women, though she did disagree with the queen's financial policy. They talked about royalty, design, outfits, and just generally chatted with each other about one anothers life. But, slowly, the dwarf began to be swayed, and pulled- And she found that, behind the girls fragile frame was a mind as stunning as the stars. And the dwarven princess realized that she loved her as much as any forge (Though not sure if she loved her back). So she wrote a letter that night, to discover the following morning that she had been kidnapped. She took to a Wizard, who whisked her away to the island, in search of the woman she fell in love with.
Appearance and Personality: To be honest, despite everything about her, she’s kinda rough, but ultimately good natured woman- A little less than five foot tall, with brown eyes and curly hair- The clothing she wears on her back seem mostly mundane- No special frills on her cloak, a fairly mundane pair of glasses resting on her nose, a small silver chain around her throat, and a small, plain wooden cane with a bell engraved on it, plus a small bag at her belt. Her entire attire is actually rather plain, seemingly mundane clothing.
For the most part, the women is rather plain, even in conversation- She usually doesn’t say much until one talks about magic or the creation of stuff- Where she goes in and explains her love for the stuff. In General, she's rather reserved, not being one for conversation outside of where she was taught- Talk to her about financing and establishing an effective market monopoly, she can talk for hours. Talk about diplomacy, she'll probably stumble. Talk about Thievery, she'll be silent as the day after a snowfall. Talk about Spying, she might provide some ideas as to how to gain access to it- Talk about divination, she'll stumble occasionally, but will say one or two things. All in all, she's quiet, reserved, but when you get into an area she's versed in, she's the best companion one can have.
Alright, name down (Most difficult part- Means Know Unknown in Romanian.) And, the character idea is a woman who's sin is greed- but not of a monetary type. She claws, always, for no information, more, more, more. She claws, always to know more. Enough, that she clawed divine power with ease. Functionally, she'll be a Cleric 1/Diviner 2/Mystic Theurge 2.
As such, I've found two spells that fit her excedingly well- She's not exactly the most stable.
AKA, she's crazy, and she's obsessively loves knowledge, and hoards it like a dragon holds gold, and defends it just as hard. Out of combat, her primary role will be knowledge monkey, between combat, her primary role will be buff monkey (So those without spells don't have to wait a day for their buffs), and in-combat, battlefield control to make others shine. (I don't like stabbing people.) Fighting is far more entertaining. |
