I'm taking us out of combat for a moment.

@GM: NPC's do NOT get a say in this. If someone jumps through trying to take the decision for us, thats on them. We'll light a candle for them and use them as a classroom example on why you don't Leeroy pointlessly.

The room slowly fills more of the surviving party guests. None looks too eager to dive through the strange magical barrier, though everyone can see the anger in Lord Varn's eyes.

Sandralane helps Serena to her feet. Serena has the time to recover all of her dropped gear.

Longtooth disappears from sight, while Lord Varn engages in some fancy blade work to help his companion Matheus.

aid another (Matheus's AC): 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (18) + 21 = 39

Lord Varn lunges in, his curved dueling blade slashing out before him at the entangled undead.

mithril aldori sword v (vital strike, power attack): 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (2) + 17 = 19damage: 2d8 + 20 ⇒ (1, 6) + 20 = 27

But the blow bounces off some unseen barrier protecting Szam.

Varn nods grimly.

"I judge we have enough strength present to take whatever it is that awaits us on the topmost floor. Many more and we would only be in each other's way, and present to great a target for sorcery." interjects the Swordlord. "For all we know the others might be being held directly above us."

"Has anyone seen the Ser Richard, Lord Mayor Sellenius, or Lord Orlovsky?"

"And the rest of the men?" adds Varn. His answer comes from Matheus's downcast countenance. "I see.... And the others? The Lord Mayor? Lord Orlovsky?"

"Air. At last." says a groggy Lord Varn from the floor. "I had thought never to see my home and child again."

And Lord Varn!

dice:
1d20 + 16 ⇒ (17) + 16 = 33 damage: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15 damage: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18 damage: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

Shock takes hold of the collected company (i.e. I am delaying your character if you haven't taken your action yet).

Lord Varn spins like a sword dervish hitting the zombie thing once to no noticeable effect.

dice:
1d20 ⇒ 16
1d20 ⇒ 1

Lord Varn disappears in the explosion, The flash of his blade that last you see of him until he appears again once the smoke and flame has passed, now somehow standing on the far side of the undead wizard a stunned look on his scorched face.

"I-it went right through him."

Oh well, that name is too mangled for Alia to recognize it. Only Fergus could speak up there, I suppose. Guess we'll talk with Kyonin later.

Alia does not laugh, either, instead commenting:"Worrysome, though - either an imposter is already here, or someone tried to get in by impersonating someone else. We can only hope it was for food and company, rather than some less-savory objectives."

Lord Varn seems to consider what he's hearing before standing and announcing "I should be off too. This politicking can't be over soon enough for my liking."

Late in the afternoon a group of riders arrive at the gates led by Lord Maegar Varn...
