Alas, such is a Special, sometimes.

Li Po Wen gasps at the sight of the radiant phoenix... and at Aram Zey's sacrifice.

"....he always seemed so unpleasant..." he murmurs to nobody in particular. The owl on his shoulder hoots once, possibly in agreement.

I'm using a combo of CLW wand and lifelink (more efficient to heal damage on one person than several blah blah) but for tracking, it's really wise if people keep their stat lines updated or make notes in their posts because if we trust to my ability to read through every single post and note every damage taken, I'm inevitably going to miss some. I try, but life is a thing...

As the phoenix and the warriors engage again, Yoon's injuries begin to heal and Li Po hisses as he feels them in turn.

5 healing to Yoon, 5 damage to LPW

"Owww," the samsaran moans unhappily, and winces as he watches Cletus getting slammed. "You're two far away!"

Five foot step, fortune hex on Yoon, reroll a d20 and take the better

Sovereign Court

Samsaran Shaman 3 | AC15-T11-F14 | HP 23/23+7 temp | F+2 R+2 W+7 | Per +6, LLV

Li edges carefully away from the hovering red-hot phoenix, wincingly watching Yoon...

Std to enable lifelink between Yoon and myself. It'll take its first effect next turn.

...and that fractional blue glow settles over Yeen, causing Li Po to let out a dismayed squeak. "Oh gods here we go again," he moans, and draws a wand of healing.

I would also vote against trying to take on hard mode when we're not really a good party for ranged striking and the phoenix definitely doesn't need to descend to hit us... that said, I do have a scroll of magic weapon, Torku. You, however, are our highest Dex character... and you have a phoenix in your face... Yoon is also good dexterity. I assume this is an acceptable level of meta-talk and strategy coordination, given we could do this face to face at a table, and tell each other things like boons, if we were in fact all present together.

"WHAT CAN WE DO AGAINST SUCH A THING?" Li Po all-but-wails, digging into his pack in a frantic flurry of trying to hunt some sort of salvation. As is usual, it is the little owl who shows more courage, pecking at his hand and tugging it towards the crossbow.

"IT'S JUST A CROSSBOW, YANGUANG, IT WILL NOT BE EFFECTIVE AGAINST [bigger]THAT!"[/b] the flustered samsaran shouts. All the same, his hand closes on a scroll, and he pulls it out, looking alarmed.

"This--? This? Really, my past selves think that-- this-- Oh imperial dragon above! Very well!"

He turns to the girl who's been dealing such devastation with her fire thus far. "You-- you must be good at aiming, to burn things as you have! Yes? Yes, I hope so! I must hope so! Here!"

Drawing scroll, then standard action to cast magic weapon on Yoon's crossbow

GM:
I apologize for not posting over the day period indicated. I was on the road to visit a sick friend in another state, and my lodging was supposed to have Wifi that turned out to be down when I arrived-- the expectation of working wifi is why I also didn't post explaining I might be slow. Not an excuse, as I should have anyway, but I understand the frustration in a special when you're trying to herd a table in a tight time crunch. If you'd prefer the healing was not in play, then I'd have spent the channel during a prep round, and I'd do the resist fire in the second prep round. Your call, as you'd be within your rights.

Sovereign Court

Samsaran Shaman 3 | AC15-T11-F14 | HP 23/23+7 temp | F+2 R+2 W+7 | Per +6, LLV

As I understand it, we get to do 'a few rounds' recovery from the fight, and then also two rounds of prep for the specific incoming threat? If so:

Last channel of the day to heal the party: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 6) = 7 Personal HP now 12
CLW self: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9 Personal HP now 21
CLW self: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 Personal HP now full, no temp HP remaining

With his usual bravery on display, Li Po frantically heals after the undead fall, kicking furiously with one slippered foot at the ghoul that had nearly killed him. But when the roar of a phoenix's flame is heard, he looks up with a slack jaw and a new misery on his face.

"...no..."

Swallowing, he stares transfixed at the enormous phoenix, a long moment. Then, he jerks himself into movement, reaching into his pouch for a scroll.

Prep round 1: use scroll of resist energy (fire) on himself)
Prep round 2: Bless from wand on party

Fort 1, disease: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Fort 2, paral.: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Fort 3, paral.: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

Following actions contingent on if I'm paralyzed, obviously.... if I'm paralyzed, I do nothing! :P This is a total of 23 damage so far, potentially putting me at 0 hp. I say potentially because I usually try to run with the false life buff up; in this case I had it going the previous day, but forgot to restate I was casting it again after the night's rest. So the 7 temp HP that were listed in my status line are actually from yesterday and it would be expired by now. If you'd allow a retconned "you did in fact cast false life at the start of the day" then I'd be up the value of whatever those false life temps would have been; but you're of course not obligated to since I'm the one who forgot my own buff. If graciously allowing:

False life: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

So, I'm either at 5, or 0, depending. I I'm at 5, I'll channel to harm; if I'm at 0, I'll channel to heal.

Gasping as claws and teeth tear repeatedly into him, the blue-skinned man looks wide-eyed and near panic. "No-- not-- yet-- I am not ready to start over again...!"

Healing OR Ghoul damage to everyone within 30, depending on GM ruling, DC 13 will resist: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 5) = 9

(HP either at 5 or 9, depending. Probably 9. :P I'll kill my link to Cletus as an immediate.)

The faint blue glow that has subtly shimmered between Cletus and Li Po Wen disappears.

Fort vs disease: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Fort vs Paralysis: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21 ....nice. and unexpected

Li Po Wen finds himself face to face with a ghoul, to his EXTREME displeasure. And terror. He screams, flailing wildly at the monster with his hands before remembering he can maybe do something about this.

"KILL IT! KILL IT! 殺死它! 殺死它!"

Tien:
...he's saying 'kill it' in Tien.

Standard to Channel Positive to harm, Will save DC 13 to resist

殺死它!!!: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 4) = 5

The owl looks vaguely embarrassed for its master's sake.

Conloach: I would have been happy to use your healing wand on you. Additionally I've got a casting of lesser retoration prepped I'd have used before this fight for your con damage.

Lesser restoration for Con's Con: 1d4 ⇒ 4

(If anyone else needed healing, let me know. GM, during the 'night's rest' is there any provision for shopping?)

Now, will save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Kn Vs Undead: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16

"--yes, Cletus is right, a mummy! Strike quickly, friends!" he cries out with even more nervousness than usual in his tone.

Actions are going to be contingent here on whether Yoon made the save or not. If not, she's paralyzed, I assume. If it's possible for Li Po Wen to notice the paralysis, he would use his turn to draw a scroll of remove fear and cast it on Yoon. I believe I also still have a scroll of remove paralysis, which I would have used earlier in the first ghoul fight, but (I think) the fight wound up concluding before my turn came around again, and would not have been needed. Does a remove fear in its own right end the paralysis, or would I not know that IC?

If Yoon is NOT paralyzed, I'll instead cast a fresh barkskin, from my wand of it, on Cleetus.

Hmmmm, my bad of miscounting on the burst, yeah. Thanks for the template. Too bad. If you'll permit a retcon of that action, I'll advance 30' and grant Fortune to Torku. Torku, you can roll twice on one roll within the next round and take the better result.

If it'd be too much hassle to retcon, I'll just hit the ghoul with the burst

Samsaran Shaman 3 | AC15-T11-F14 | HP 23/23+7 temp | F+2 R+2 W+7 | Per +6, LLV

Is it fair to assume that I already ID'd ghouls earlier and therefore know that green's a ghoul? If not, here's a religion check:

religion vs undead: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28 ...well, if I didn't already know, I sure do now

"Another of those accursed ghouls!" Li Po groans in dread. "And..."

Kn Local for duergar?: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25

(Just in case they're something other than normal duergar, I won't post my OOC knowledge on duergar here; if it would be a different skill than Local, Li Po's skill values are in his statblock. But he will share what he learns, prioritizing special attcks.)

"It is very clear you are not supposed to be here!" Li Po yells at the ghoul and the duergar. "Or even working together! The living and the abominable undead! Unnatural! Unlawful! Imperial and natural law are VERY clear on the matter!"

As he upbraids the enemies with a mixture of fear and outrage, a burst of Tien characters, shaped out of light, washes over the nearer duergar, the ghoul, and (if it matters) the black gemstone and the slumped figures around it.

Burst of Radiance, Reflex DC 16: 3d4 ⇒ (3, 4, 4) = 11

Evil creatures take the damage regardless of their save; the save is to determine whether or not they are blinded or simply dazzled (on a save). If it matters for the gemstone, the spell has the "light" and "good" descriptors.

Duration of blinded/dazzled, in rounds: 1d4 ⇒ 4

Is there any skill that might be relevant to understand the gemstone's purpose or nature?

For healing, I can also lifelink everyone out of combat until they are at max or less than 5 down, and then just heal myself. The wand of infernal is appreciated though, I wish it were on the shaman list as a spell. You'd think it would be given it's on the spell list of both parent classes *Eyeroll* We have enough wounded I'm going to throw one last channel:

2d6 ⇒ (3, 5) = 8

By my math that puts the party at the following:
Cletus: full
Li Po Wen at 19/23
Torku: 23/24
Yoon: 40/44
Conloach: 36/41

Since Conloach is down an exact 5, can lifelink him (if he's willing), get him to full, and then I have -9 to heal which Torku can heal on me with an infernal charge. Assuming everyone is fine with those logistics, then only Torku and Yoon still have damage (1 hp damage for Torku, 4 hp damage for Yoon).

RP to narrate all that^^:

Li Po Wen looks relieved when the battle ends, and notes that his bodyguards fellow agents look a little beaten up. "One moment, one moment-- let's see, where did I put it-- ah, yes, here we are, requisition order 32-C, On the Petitioning of the Spirit World for the Mitigation of Wounds--"

He seems to be reading from an invisible scroll; in an instant, a wash of healing flows over the group. (The channel)

Li seems ready to travel on, until Yanguang hoots and flies over to Conloach, circling his head and looking back at Li Po Wen, who groans. "Oh NO come on I already--"

A fresh bruise appears on the blue man's face, while Conloach heals fully. Li Po huffs, and turns to Torku. "--You said something of a more efficient form of healing?!"

***

"I at least feel less turmoil in my guts," Li Po hazards as they approach their next trial. "One must look on... the little bright spots..."

Is it indeed an hour between locations? I missed that-- if so, Barkskin is quite expired on those who had it up. I also need to remember to cast false life, and will do so now:

Guidance on Conloach

Li edges around the battlefield until he can nervously waggle a small piece of jade in the direction of the mighty Conloach.

Cletus, heal 5, I take 5. By my math that is 15 healing to Cletus this fight, and he was down exactly 15 (had -2 hp damage when the fight started, was hit for 13 in first round). He should be full up, and I have taken 15.

Li holds onto his curing wand VERY tightly, looking rather a sickly shade of blue, but trying to make sure the danger passes before he starts using it.

Li Po Wen lets out a squeak when the monsters switch to someone other than the burly looking warriors. "Oh dear, no, stay back--"

He then hisses in pain as he takes on some of Cleetus's bruising. "WHAT! DID! I! TELL! YOU!"

Cleetus, heal 5, I take 5.

"I hope you manage to get LUCKY and hit that ugly thing!"] he tacks on at Cleetus in tones of mingled worry and sarcasm.

Perception to find handholds, attempting my own: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 6 - 2 = 17
Perception to find handholds, Yanguang the owl: 1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 11 - 2 = 12 If you'll allow the owl to make a roll

Li Po Wen scans the mountain's face with some trepidation, pointing out a few, while Yanguang wings aloft and lazily sails upward, making a mockery of those creatures who don't have nice wings.

Craft, untrained, attempting an aid: 1d20 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 1 - 2 = 13

"I ... have not been trained in manual labor," the samsaran snifs. All the same he manages to suss out some basic supports.

Acrobatics, attempting an aid: 1d20 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 1 - 2 = 9

It's clear that he has also not been trained in leaping and cavorting about.

Kn Local, on my own: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 8 - 2 = 14

He tries to engage with the ratfolk, but doesn't make much progress.

Wisdom check for Pattern, on my own: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 4 - 2 = 11

And finally, he tries to see a pattern, but the lingering sickness from the earlier ward seems to tripping him up.

"I wonder... there are various ways to communicate without speaking... Why, Yanguang communicated fear and trouble earlier to me, for instance... let me see."

The blue man rests a hand lightly on the ward, and does his best to communicate empathically with the bird-- envisioning strong sensations of disgust, aversion, annoyance, and antipathy. Yanguang hoots uncertainly before flying a short distance away, seemingly dispirited. With some effort, Li Po Wen tries to reverse a mental course-- focusing on feelings of love, happiness, and contentment-- and Yanguang wings his way back, making soft, happy hoots in turn.

I have no possible idea what skill check you'd want for that, if this is even remotely something we can attempt. Feel free to roll something for Li Po based on his skills or stats, GM.

"I cannot even think what a false face might mean, other than that I know the serpentfolk are masters of disguise..."

Sighing, Li Po attempts to fashion a crude mask out of some leaves around the base of the ziggurat.

Unfortunately I have no disguise spells and no message spells, which is where my mind was going. Someone with a high charisma could just attempt a straight up disguise skill check, or maybe a bluff? Just tracking healing for Cletus and myself:
By my count, Cletus took 17 damage that fight; the life link will ultimately heal 15 of it, giving me 15 damage in turn and leaving Cletus down -2 HP. I will keep the wand roll I rolled above for my first one if that's okay, though I forgot it would have had a +1 to it, so that's 9 from my first charge, and... 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 for my second charge, leaving me full, and Cletus at -2, and 2 charges used, in out of combat healing.

Li Po Wen is embarrassingly relieved when the fight is over, though he does wag a finger in Cletus's face. "What did I tell you about being reckless with your body! You might show a little-- a little consideration, sir!"

With a huff, the Tien man surveys the others. "Is anyone hurt? If you have your own wands of healing then I am willing to use them upon you-- the more of you are healthy, the saf-- the better we all do."

I will activate any wands of CLW that people need activated for their own healing. If you don't have a wand and need healing let me know. Roll your own heals and mark off your charges appropriately!

Wen has somewhat recovered his composure by the time they reach the doors, his owl nuzzling reassuringly at his cheek, not that he seems to appreciate this very much by the way he tries to pull his head away.

"I don't know this language..."

(I assume Torku will be able and willing to translate it for us)

"....and I have not yet studied the histories of these people," he admits with great chagrin, studying his feet. Ah, to be lacking in the learned arts-- how can he even call himself a scribe?

Start of my turn: Cletus, heal 5. I take 5 damage.

If Conloach is paralyzed:

Yelping in pain thanks to his less-than-voluntary connection to Cletus, Li Po focuses on the important fact that if any of the warriors fall, he's next. This causes him to read aloud quickly from the scroll in his hand; a nimbus of light flickers from the parchment, to... the owl. With a soft hoot, the glowing owl takes off from Li Po Wen's shoulder and moves to land on Conloach's-- and his body is freed from its unnatural stiffness. Remove paralysis, delivered via familiar, then swift action to pop wrist sheath with CLW wand, no move action. If this scenario happens, Yanguang is in Conloach's square, but I have not yet moved the token.

If Conloach is NOT paralyzed:

"I think you all have this in hand," Li Po Wen says faintly, feeling more injuries appear on his person. "Just-- going to heal--"

Swift action to draw wand of CLW, std to cast on self for 1d8 ⇒ 8 healing

My apologies, I thought I'd posted but I might have been hallucinating it.

Li Po looks upset when one of the big, burly men whose job it is to shield him from danger and misery (at least, as he sees it), gets a chunk taken out of him-- the more so since it is in short order a chunk taken out of Li Po as well.

Cletus, heal 5; 5 damage to myself. GM, is the creature causing the energy drain damage a separate creature than the ghouls? Kn religion if so:

Kn Religion vs undead: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 6 + 1 = 18 Will share aloud anything I learn as a result of that

Li Po edges very, very gingerly closer to the battle, careful to keep the strong men between him and the enemy. He squeezes his eyes shut, breathing shallowly, muttering in Tien under his breath as he lifts his hands up.

Tien:
"Unlawful! Not allowed by the emperor! Divine and material edicts against those scorning the laws of life and death! In violation of the Golden Law of Yu Shueng, the Scroll of the Jade Dragon-- paragraphs four, points three and five-- and also in violation of the Crimson Codex of The Natural Order!"

Whatever he is muttering to himself, the ghostly image of a number of calligraphic brushes seems to appear, barely visible, around him, and then these nearly-invisible brushes seem to strike graceful X-s over the two undead.

Protection from evil on Conloach, +2 deflection to his AC, +2 resistance to his saves

I was curious so I went digging. It looks like previous versions of the Guide had some ambiguous language about under what circumstances one could use pre-gens, as discussed in great, excruciating detail here, but that thread is 4 years old. The current guide seems to contain no restrictions on it whatsoever other than declaring the character who will be receiving the credit ultimately, etc. Seems you're fine, Gayel.

I thought one had to use a character in tier if one had one and could only elect to use a pregen if one has no character in tier? I could be wrong, the guide seems to update more often than I can keep up.

On a separate note, my own bad: I forgot I can't actually use the mage armor scroll with my shaman spell list, so Yanguang is only AC 17, not 21, and the scroll is unspent. If anyone CAN activate a scroll of mage armor in our group, let me know, but I don't think so with our current party comp. (A shame, it'd be more useful on Cleetus than my bird anyway.)

Selecting a potion (well oil) of bless weapon as my freebie, along with the CSW. 1 Charge of Barkskin on Cletus, Cletus is lifelinked. 1 scroll of mage armor on my familiar, Yanguang. Mini is on the map.

Li Po Wen seems immediately nervous as they enter less civilized territory, and can be heard muttering in Tien to himself as he walks-- for those who speak the language, it's basically a litany of, Don't worry, the others are professionals, this won't be anything like the temple, even though that was ALSO in the tapestry, just don't go into any kitchens, it's fine, the others can protect you...

He does pause to read a scroll over his familiar, voice shaking only slightly, and hesitantly touches a stick that looks like it was literally just broken off a tree to Cletus's brawny shoulder. "Sorry, I have the notes for this-- somewhere-- oh here we go..."

A flickering blue glow jumps from Wen to Cletus, and the blue-skinned man looks alarmed, then chagrined. "Oh no, not again. I hate this part!" He rubs at the bridge of his nose then says, "--apparently when you get hurt now I'M going to feel it. Please don't be overly reckless with your body! I don't like pain!"

The owl hoots softly. It takes off from Li Po's shoulder and flies forward, glowing faintly...

Sending Yanguang forward as a flier to see if it spots anything. Yanguang will stay 20' up, and has a perception score of +11, low light vision, AC currently 21. It can only relay empathic impressions back to Li Po, but at GM discretion this may be enough to notice moving figures. Your call. If attacked or hurt Yanguang will immediately try and return. If this attempted scouting will slow us down too much or be a headache for you, GM, please feel free to say so and I won't use the tactic, I am aware this is a special with all the time cramp that entails.

Have fun, frontliners.. I'm right behind you...

Will roll a quick Diplomacy if it still matters, if not, ignore:

Knowledge of the Weave: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11 Crappy roll anyway

Li Po Wen tries to discuss the situation with some other scholars, but everyone is too busy to talk...

He listens soberly when Aram Zey speaks of undead, and lightly touches the cracked amethyst stone hovering around his head as if to reassure himself it's still there. Then, he looks to the rest of his team.

"We should be prepared for anything, it seems. Who intends to be in the front of battle? I will cast something on you."

(Any frontliners, there is a charge of barkskin available to you from a wand Li Po has, duration 30 minutes. Let me know if you're claiming a charge. I'm also willing to put frontliners in a life link. Speak up if you want to be in it.)

Li Po Wen looks, in a word, appalled. Most especially at the claims of 'too dumb to quit' and the roaring toasts that follow.

As for the question of if he is given to the martial disciplines, the blue-tinted man is first wide-eyed, and then shakes his head no, fervently.

"I-- warrior-- no," he sputters after a few seconds. "I-- I am a clerk!"

At this instant a small barn owl sails through the door being opened by a carouser, flits easily over the room, and lands on his shoulder. The Tien man exhales, pinching the bridge of his nose with one hand, and absently patting the owl with the other.

"That is to say: My name is Li Po Wen. I previously served the mighty Dragon Throne of Imperial Lung Wa, as a scribe and a clerk," he says, somewhat morosely. "It was a duty I performed with honor and scrupulous attention to detail."

Kn history DC 10:
Lung Wa ceased to exist about the same time as the Death of Aroden. Y'know, 104 years ago, give or take

"And now I am.... with... all... of you." He forces a smile of attempted cameraderie. It looks a bit ghastly. "My... my fellow agents." Helplessly forced smile.

"I-- have some small gifts of healing, even though I am much better with documents, really... I keep petitioning for a transfer into the Chronicling department..."

The blue man's voice trails off lost under the raucous noise of the tavern in full swing. He watches Kitoro's puppets with a gloomy look, especially as they stagger around drunk. "I do hope that's not predictive of our fates, going forth."

A man of obvious Tien ancestry-- as well as something else, judging by the blue tint to his skin-- enters the tavern with obvious hesitation and distaste, using his hands to lift the hem of his long, black silken garment slightly so it doesn't touch the floorboards of the tavern and any puddles of spilled ale. He gingerly picks his way through the boisterous crowd, and when he sees a man garbed in a similarly-eastern style his face briefly lights up. He hurries through the crowd to the drinker's table...

"哦!文明國家的其他人! --"

Tien:
"Oh, someone from a civilized land! --"

The newcomer's face falls as he takes in more than just clothes and registers instead the pale skin and coppery hair. With definite awkwardness, the blue-skinned man bows slightly and says in accented-but-fluent Common:

"--my apologies, honored sir, I thought you might be from my homeland by your dress. I see the mistake is mine."

By his own build-- slight and skinny, with hunched shoulders-- and his dress-- a scholar's robe in Tien style that reaches all the way to his feet-- the blue-skinned man is no warrior at all, unlike Conloach. He stands there, wringing his hands, looking around him unhappily after his perfunctory apology.

"--have you happened to see an-- owl?"

OOC: Wen does not have a goatee, and does not look remotely as cool or handsome or debonair as his avatar, but there was something of a lack of suitable avatars.
