GM Netherpongo |
We don't have time to conclude the last encounter properly, but for the record: Cleetus struck the duergar solidly and Conlaoch cut down the ghoul standing before the gemstone.
A Pathfinder adept approaches you as chaos consumes the room following Aram Zey's announcement. "There is little time, and none for a proper briefing. It seems that the invaders are attacking in two places. Would your group rather face the astral invaders, or the undead?"
Conlaoch McCullagh |
”Do we need anything special to fight on astral? Undead I can generally deal with, but I am up for either, as long as I can hit ‘em!”
GM Netherpongo |
Sounds like a vote for undead to me. Sort of. Make sure that you guys take a day's rest before this encounter. You were supposed to get one but got pre-empted by the end of the chapter.
You hear Aram Zey speak through the tapestry. "The undead are strongest in the tapestry's ancient ruins. Cut this problem off at its source."
After travelling through the tapestry, you find yourself back at the Muckmouth ziggurat.
We're not in initiative yet. Go ahead and move in.
Conlaoch McCullagh |
Conlaoch will ask someone to help him with his wand of clw to get back up to health. Should I roll again for ghoul fever?
GM Netherpongo |
Yes, roll for Ghoul Fever since we took a day rest. You can recover HD in hp at the same time though.
GM Netherpongo |
Conlaoch Ghoul Fever Constitution Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 3
Conlaoch Ghoul Fever Charisma Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 3
Conlaoch: you took 3 Constitution and 3 Charimsa damage from the first disease failure during the night while you were resting & feel terrible. Your second saving throw succeeded, but you are still diseased. If you want to do something about the ability damage or the disease before this encounter begins, just roll that in.
The low moaning of a lost soul reaches your ears before you see the undead. Strands of the tapestry itself pull upward from the ground on the rise above you before knitting together to form the body of your foe.
Before you can act, horror grips your hearts. Everyone needs to roll a Will save. The save has paralysis, fear & mind-affecting attributes. If you make the saving throw, you can try to identify your enemy. If you fail the saving throw, you cannot act on your next turn (paralyzation).

GM, what’s the DC for this effect?
GM Netherpongo |
Good point: I didn't say. To preserve the possibility of rerolls & such, let's keep it that way. Especially if you think you made the save, go ahead and take your actions and we'll back things up if you failed. I'll resolve the saving throws on the next enemy action.

After calling out to Irori for Divine assistance Cleetus locks eyes with the undead monstrosity, extends his arm, and gestures for it to approach."Yer 'bout ta get yer ass kicked in the name a Irori ya nasty undead bastard!"
Cleetus casts Divine Favor, enters Dragon Style, and designates the mummy as his target for Smite Evil.
Li Po Wen |
Conloach: I would have been happy to use your healing wand on you. Additionally I've got a casting of lesser retoration prepped I'd have used before this fight for your con damage.

Now, will save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Kn Vs Undead: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
"--yes, Cletus is right, a mummy! Strike quickly, friends!" he cries out with even more nervousness than usual in his tone.
Actions are going to be contingent here on whether Yoon made the save or not. If not, she's paralyzed, I assume. If it's possible for Li Po Wen to notice the paralysis, he would use his turn to draw a scroll of remove fear and cast it on Yoon. I believe I also still have a scroll of remove paralysis, which I would have used earlier in the first ghoul fight, but (I think) the fight wound up concluding before my turn came around again, and would not have been needed. Does a remove fear in its own right end the paralysis, or would I not know that IC?
If Yoon is NOT paralyzed, I'll instead cast a fresh barkskin, from my wand of it, on Cleetus.
GM Netherpongo |
Yoon did fail, and it is a fear effect that causes paralysis, so I'd think that either remove spell could work. Shopping is available, but don't use knowledge of what has since transpired: the tapestry ripping and a new undead fighting expedition, or the mummy specifically.
Li Po Wen |
(GM: Understood. The only thing I would have bought would have been a wand of bless (using prestige), and possibly replaced my original scroll of remove paralysis if it were ruled to have been used in that first encounter.)
GM Netherpongo |
Yoon freezes in place, missing her chance to attack, although Li Po Wen is able to relieve her fear with magic from his scroll supply. Make sure you choose & expend a relevant scroll.
I started trying to take Conlaoch's turn, but it's hard to justify it. A mummy and especially the rot is too high a threat to have a GM rush him in knowing that the mummy would likely just clobber him back. I'll wait for a while more, but if Conlaoch hasn't responded in about four hours from now, can someone else take his turn? We do have to keep moving.
Conlaoch McCullagh |
Just catching up. It looks like Conlaoch CON is back to full, as HP, but CHA is at 7, so you all are probably starting to avoid him!

Good thing I waited. Nothing I did would've been that impressive.
As the rest of the group prepares for the ensuing battle, Conlaoch invokes holy power on his blade and runs forward to strikes the undead monstrosity. The shining light burns deeply into its undead flesh. The mummy did resist some damage on that hit.
Seemingly angered by Conlaoch's strike, the mummy swings its fish, striking Conlaoch across the jaw. The mummy hit AC 24 for 23 damage. Make a Fortitude save vs Mummy Rot.
Initiative is simple for this fight. Everyone can act. No one is paralyzed.
Cleetus |
Cleetus lets out a roar and leaps into the air striking at the Mummy.

"More fire!" Yoon cries as she launches a volley at the mummy.
Cleetus, Conlaoch and Yoon combine their attacks, and with all three of their efforts they manage to return the mummy to its slumber once more. As it falls, it dissipates into threads that seem to merge back into the Tapestry, leaving behind an ugly red scar.
Take a few rounds to recover, but I'm moving the party further in for the next encounter due to time constraints.
As you continue hunting for undead, you find undead that are hunting for you! Like the mummy, these ghouls seem to rise up from the very threads of the tapestry itself.
Initiative is Easy
Conlaoch
Cleetus
Li Po Wen
Torku
Yoon
Red Ghouls
Blue Ghouls
Seizing the initiative, the ghouls swarm around the party and attack you! Two ghouls each attack Conlaoch and one attacks Torku, biting at them savagely, but none manage to land a blow past their armor. The fourth ghoul attacks the party from behind and sinks its jaws into Li Po Wen. Li Po Wen is hit at with a 19 vs flat-footed AC for 6 damage. He needs to make a Fortitude save vs disease and paralyzation, in that order or your declared order.
Everyone can act!
Edit: Moved all dice rolls into the GM spoiler for this one. I messed up and put the ghoul attacks above Yoon's attack and the Initiative pile and it changed all the rolls. Rather than going back to retcon the whole round, I'm sticking with the original results I got. Sorry about that.

”Well, that mummy left behind something,” Torku remarks as he pockets the strange red string. ”We’ll have to figure out what it does later - we have company.” This last bit is delivered drolly as the tiefling presents an arm with a ghoul gnawing ineffectively on the chain armor before trying to jam his rapier into its eye sockets.

Cleetus enters Dragon Style and uses acrobatics to flip out of the reach of the ghoul currently threatening him. I am assuming Divine Favor has expired but we haven't moved that far so if it is still active my attack and damage results will be 1 higher.

I changed some ghoul colors so we can more readily identify them.
Torku is unable to position his rapier well enough to stick the ghoul properly and ends up rapping it on the head to no effect. Cleetus lands a solid blow against the blue ghoul while Yoon launches a blast of fire at the red ghoul, catching it on fire.
Yoon's panicked channel singes all of the ghouls with a holy light. Most of the ghouls seem to shrug it off taking only minor damage, but the blue ghoul attacking him succumbs to its wounds and slumps to the ground, its animating energy depleted. As it does, it seems to dissipate like the mummy into threads that merge with the tapestry to leave an ugly scar behind.
Conlaoch strikes at the green ghoul but fails to bring his large sword into play properly.
Maddened with hunger, the ghouls continue attacking the Pathfinders. The green ghoul moves in to flank Conlaoch but focuses its fury on the man shouting in Tien with the hurtful light, biting and clawing him. Li Po Wen is hit with the bite AC 21 for 7 damage and one of the claws AC 23 (confirm 19 for 5 damage with 5 crit damage). Total I think is 17 damage, one disease fort save and two paralyzation fort saves. Hopefully your good luck streak on the Fort saves continues.
The red-hued ghoul takes advantage of its position against Conlaoch and rakes its claws across one of the warrior's legs. AC 22 for 3 damage and a for save vs paralyzation.
Sensing the scary fire, the yellow-hued ghoul gives up on gnawing Torku's arm and attacks Yoon. Its claws fail to reach the child, but it bites her! I think Yoon is hit at AC 19 for 4 damage, with a disease fort save and a paralyzation fort save.
Initiative is easy! Everyone can go! Our table did just get an Aid Token. You can also consider what to do with it (you might want to see how saving throws and Li Po Wen's damage goes before you decide).

Following actions contingent on if I'm paralyzed, obviously.... if I'm paralyzed, I do nothing! :P This is a total of 23 damage so far, potentially putting me at 0 hp. I say potentially because I usually try to run with the false life buff up; in this case I had it going the previous day, but forgot to restate I was casting it again after the night's rest. So the 7 temp HP that were listed in my status line are actually from yesterday and it would be expired by now. If you'd allow a retconned "you did in fact cast false life at the start of the day" then I'd be up the value of whatever those false life temps would have been; but you're of course not obligated to since I'm the one who forgot my own buff. If graciously allowing:
False life: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
So, I'm either at 5, or 0, depending. I I'm at 5, I'll channel to harm; if I'm at 0, I'll channel to heal.
Gasping as claws and teeth tear repeatedly into him, the blue-skinned man looks wide-eyed and near panic. "No-- not-- yet-- I am not ready to start over again...!"
Healing OR Ghoul damage to everyone within 30, depending on GM ruling, DC 13 will resist: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 5) = 9
(HP either at 5 or 9, depending. Probably 9. :P I'll kill my link to Cletus as an immediate.)
The faint blue glow that has subtly shimmered between Cletus and Li Po Wen disappears.
GM Netherpongo |
I'll need to double check the save DC before I comment on that. Having your temp HP with the new roll up is perfectly fine. We started the day in an odd way. So channel to harm I guess.

Torku's rapier stabs the yellow-hued ghoul just as Li Po Wen channels holy power. The yellow ghoul seems to resist the divine energy at first, but then crumples under the assault, its animating force expended. The red-hued ghoul fares less well and succumbs to a combination of divine power and fire. The green ghoul resists Li Po Wen's attack, but Conlaoch slices the undead creature in half.
Combat is over! The astral invaders have been driven off, so only undead remain to fight. Go ahead and recover for a few rounds.
GM Dennis |
**OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT** (2 of 2)
Suddenly, it becomes clear that the astral invaders’ retreat is merely a ploy. More invaders pour through the rifts to reinforce their companions. Their reckless assault tears the holes wider, and the entire demiplane begins to shift and fold. Locations fade and vanish, reappearing miles away, now separated by a wide expanse of barren, rocky wasteland. The invaders continue to pour through, and the tapestry’s exhausted repair mechanisms cease to function altogether. The triumphant attackers converge on the Pathfinders scattered across the wasteland.
Then, the sky turns red.
A primal screech pierces the tapestry, and a colossal ruby-flamed phoenix appears in the sky, its wings nearly blocking the sun. It swoops across the sky at tremendous speed, its tattered feathers leaving a trail of smoke. With another screech, it flaps its massive wings, and countless fiery feathers shoot towards the invaders. As the feathers strike, they explode, incinerating much of the invading force. Then the phoenix turns its attention to the other outsiders—the mass of Pathfinders—and beats its wings once more. A barrage of feathers strikes the wasteland, and from each resulting inferno emerges a bird of pure ruby-red flames.
Aram Zey’s voice echoes. “Can you hear me, Pathfinders? The tapestry is in its death throes! You are cut off—I cannot help you escape. Destroy the phoenixes—perhaps their magic can repair the tapestry!”
Table GMs, the Tapestry’s Last Defense condition on page 29 is in effect.
GM Netherpongo |
All around, flaming feathers barrage the tapestry. The scattered demiplane natives are unharmed by the inferno, as is the landscape itself. Screeches echo across the ruby-tinted landscape, and the tattered birds of ruby fire close in.
You have two rounds to prepare.
Cleetus |
"Them birds seem mighty tough. Hey Conlaoch, how'd ya like ta be even bigger an tougher?"
Since we have two rounds to prepare Cleetus will cast Enlarge Person on Conlaoch, if he's willing, or himself if not.
Torku |
Sighing heavily, the tiefling draws his rapier and focuses on the blade once more. Legacy of Ages Forgotten, I have need of both the strength of your steel and the skill of those who once wielded you. Holding the weapon before him, he waits for the phoenix to arrive with determined eyes. "I doubt we want to be trapped in a disintegrating demiplane, so let's try not to die," he comments dryly.

CLW self: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9 Personal HP now 21
CLW self: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 Personal HP now full, no temp HP remaining
With his usual bravery on display, Li Po frantically heals after the undead fall, kicking furiously with one slippered foot at the ghoul that had nearly killed him. But when the roar of a phoenix's flame is heard, he looks up with a slack jaw and a new misery on his face.
"...no..."
Swallowing, he stares transfixed at the enormous phoenix, a long moment. Then, he jerks himself into movement, reaching into his pouch for a scroll.
