"Quick, friend, put the dog statue in its place so its spirit can listen rest easy!"

Kahru looks down at his clawed hands, then closes his eyes, reverting to his human form. He picks up a piece to examine it, nearly drops it, and sets it gingerly back down. "I think I'll just look and leave the fiddly bits to you."

Kahru smiles and shakes Cousin's hand. "I'm glad to see you again as well, Cousin. Present circumstances aside, I have been well, though this one" he ruffles the feathers around Nokka's neck, drawing a playful nip, "has definitely kept me busy lately with her growth spurt. Do you remember Oiur?" he says, pointing to his friend. "They're the one that bested me in Kasa Ajo at the Klaanin Pelejä last year. We've been on several missions together, since, and I have great faith in their ability to present our case today. Please, you should meet my other companions as well. This is Quinn, a steady mind and perceptive eye, and this is The Artist Formerly Known As Cudak Tanagak, singer of songs to soothe the soul. Frankly, if it weren't for the involvement of our quah, I'd wonder what I'm doing on this mission. The rest of them seem better suited to the task."

"Indeed. I assume you've made travel arrangements for us?"

Kahru closes his eyes at the description of Lumketul's carnage, a pained look on his face which is verging on anger. He takes a deep breath, holds it for a moment, then lets it out slowly before answering The Artist Formerly Known As Cudak Tanagak's question. "She is an emissary from my quah to Nirmathas, and is likely the only reason we have this opportunity at all. She probably has a better understanding of the Society than any Shoanti not currently in this room, and if she is on our side then we may have a chance. All of the quahs hold her in high regard, and I would bet that is the only reason some of them even agreed to meet with us." He pauses for a few moments, then suddenly slams his fist on the table. "Pirun kaikki! We'd been making such good progress at forging bonds between the Society and our people, too. That kirottu ryöstelyhirvi may have ruined everything!"

"Greetings, Quinn! You, ah, don't have any food in those pockets, do you? She can be rather relentless, I'm afraid."

"I don't want to hear it, you just ate." He turns back to the room. "As I was saying before, my name is Kahru Kuun, of the Shriikirri-Quah. This ravenous goof is Nokka, my companion."

"Nokka! Heel!" The large Shoanti man hurries after the creature, grabbing ahold of a large harness around her shoulders and yanking her back to his side. "Apologies, friend. She hasn't quite grasped the fact that all food is not her food. You'd think by the way she acts I'd never fed her, particularly after her recent growth spurt."

A large man leans in the doorway, listening to The Artist Formerly Known as Cudak Tunagak speak. He is tall and muscular, bearing heavy armor and a large spiked hammer over his back. His bald head bears an intricate tattoo in the form of a hawk. Ah, so it is to be that sort of party today, huh? Well, if we are to visit the Quahs, perhaps a storyteller will be of use.

"Hello, friend. My name is--"

"Fine with me" Kahru says, his features beginning to change as he unslings the dark metal earth breaker from his back.

"Oiur! Is it time for the Klaanin Pelejä again already? Ha! It's good to see you!" Turning to the rest of the party, he adds "You'll see soon enough, Oiur's music makes the blood flow!"

Kahru opens his pack and takes a quick inventory. "Hm, I think I'm all set."

"Haha, hi Eugressia! It's good to see you again. And you, Oiur. As you can see, Nokka's gotten a little bigger since that trip into the First World we took. No surprise, either--she just eats and eats, whatever she can get her beak on."

He takes a filthy wrapper from the beast's mouth, and throws it away. "Sorry. Her definition of food is...well, let's just say we don't always see eye to eye." He takes a seat and motions the owlbear to lay down by his feet. "Some tea would be lovely, thank you. My name is Kahru; this is Nokka." He takes a look around the courtyard, taking in the city. "I have not been to this city before. Is this sort of gathering common?"

A large Shoanti man in a breastplate, an odd hammer strapped to his back, follows the Tian woman toward the open seats. "Thank you, some tea would be--Nokka! Put that down, where did you even get that?"

However you'd like to run it is fine. I make players roll separately, then delay their animal if they go first, so that they can't shenanigan Initiative bonus for their PC into free bonuses for their combat-monster companion.

Out of curiosity: I usually ask players with animals to roll separate initiative for them, but many GMs prefer otherwise. How would you like to handle it?

1. Are there any special rules, boons, or corner cases I should know about with your character?
Kahru is a coldborn skinwalker (via a GM boon). His war beast is an owlbear named Nokka (via a scenario chronicle boon), which is based on the grizzly bear frame from Ultimate Wilderness. A few notes on Nokka:

Kahru will want to be in the front, with his companion Nokka (I'll introduce them when I get their profiles set up).

I'll get Kahru's profile updated today or tomorrow and get my info posted.

"'Truest hue and highest hope', huh?" Kahru says, staring into Nokka's eyes as he affectionately scratches her neck. "Surely those can be found in the eyes of a noble beast." He gently turns the owlbear's head toward Azure, squishing her cheeks into a goofy face until she wriggles away. Nokka stands on her hind legs, wrapping her forepaws around Kahru's hand and playfully biting him. He laughs, then continues "I can think of nothing more noble or true than my companion here. How about a picture of her?"

"Weird. Are frogs usually like this?"

He looks at the owlbear and coldborn. Kahru? Do you and Nokka not smell those dirty druid feet? Wager with us against Jamila!

"Hm. This does seem like just the sort of weird thing they would do. Fine, I'll take your bet Jamila. 50gp against your scroll."

Oiur and Kahru louiter while the others talk.

"Oh hahd ooh eht ah ame ahlbear, erniwihs?," the skald says around a mouthful of street food. They bend down to offer Nokka a sausage morsel.

"When my clan cleared the little buggers out of a cave in some nearby hills, there was this egg, sitting in a pile of filthy rags. Who knows what they had planned for it, or even how they got the thing. Anyway, when I picked it up it started to move and crack, and what do you know but here's a baby owlbear in my hands! I mean, I wasn't going to just leave her there, so she came back with me to camp, and she's been with me ever since." As Kahru tells his story, he leans down and scratches Nokka behind the ears, causing her to lean into him, almost knocking the big man over. "Easy there, girl."

Now if only they would make the logo work, so it looks less clunky in our taglines....

"Druids, rift, whatever it is, it doesn't seem to be happening in town. Let's hit the road." Kahru shifts back into human form and hoists his earthbreaker.

I'm ready.

"Well," Kahru says, swallowing the last bite of questionable sausage, "those druids weren't exactly subtle, last time. Why don't we just head toward this weird summer zone and beat them up again? If they're behind this, they shouldn't be too hard to find."

"What got you to leave the Plateau, anyways, owlbear in tow? We're a long way from home."

"Well, after the Pathfinders investigated that kielletty tower beneath the sky fire for us, the elders decided that they may make worthy allies, and sent me as an envoy of sorts, to learn from the Society and strengthen our bond." Spoilers for a scenario you may or may not have played if I go into any more details.

"I don't know what's gotten into you, Nokka, but leave it! You're not starving. I fed you already this morning, and you'll get your dinner at dinner time. No owlbears in the larder!"

Hearing interest in learning Kasa Ajo, Kahru has to laugh. "I'm afraid it would not be wise to have such competitions on a ship, unless you fancy a trip to the river bottom. It involves setting two large posts into the ground, then competing to see who can drive them in the fastest using their maasulku, what you call an earth breaker. Last year at the Klaanin Pelejä....hm, you might translate that as Clan Games....Oiur over there bested me in the finals."

Under Nokka's weight the gangplank groans

Just to be clear, Nokka is currently a small-sized owlbear.

"I don't think...so...wait. You're the one from the Klaanin Pelejä last year, who beat me at Kasa Ajo!"

Kahru just played Tide of Twilight.

"Hello. I am Kahru, envoy of the Shriikirri-Quah, the Clan of the Hawk in your tongue. This is Nokka."

"Ok, Nokka, let's practice. Stay!"

"Good girl." He tosses her a scrap of meat. She catches it deftly, then turns her back to him and quickly devours it, lest someone try to take it from her.

Knowledge (nature): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

A tall Shoanti man walks the deck, spending most of his time up near the front of the ship, feeling the wind on his face. "The ocean breeze is pleasant. Calming. I feel at peace with the salty spray on my face. It takes me to the cliffs of my homeland."
